Light bulb switches, washing machine cycles didn't always start or finish.

What a find! This cottage felt like home the first moment we walked in. The proximity to the beach, shops and sites was unbelievable. My brother, son and I plus several of his friends found this property perfect. On a part of the beach that was a bit out of the way gave us the peace and serenity to take advantage of the waves and walking. Loved cooking fish from the local market Billy’s and having a traditional boil at home. Loved everything about Molasses Reef- one week of work and one week for vacation. Already have reservations in for 2022! It is a piece of Heaven.

The location to the beach cannot be beat and the back deck is a perfect place to relax and watch the ocean. We enjoyed OBX - wild horses in Corolla, Duck Donuts, lighthouse visit, fishing, and delicious seafood. The kitchen is well furnished but home needs some upgrades - the bathroom shower was VERY small and the bedrooms were not especially clean or comfortable.

Very close to the beach, nicer than the pictures show. It has been updated with televisions and it was overall a lot bigger than the pictures showed. It was very comfortable and relaxing. Thank you!

Reviewer Comments: When we arrived, we learned that there was not one garbage receptacle to be found in the kitchen. I called Carolina Shores and the person who answered (a female whose name I cannot remember) was less than enthused to help and sounded like I was bothering her (even sighing at one point). She told me she would contact the cleaning company and get back to me, which she did. However, she told me that they would drop it off outside on the deck that day which never happened. I did not bother to call back. We used our own garbage bags hung on the kitchen chair all week.
The house needs to be deep cleaned. I realize that we were there the second to last week in August; however, I do not feel that means that anyone renting a property should have to be subject to less than pristine cleanliness. That's not to say that the house was dirty. It was not. The bathrooms were clean as was the kitchen. It just needed to be deep cleaned.
There were ants living in cracks of the stove. I didn't bother to call Carolina Shores after the reception I received during my first phone call.
However, I have to say that the people I dealt with before we got into the house were very polite and helpful, both on the phone and during check-in.
The house itself met our expectations and we enjoyed a great week on the beach. It is an older cottage and the owners have done a great job using every available square inch with hooks and sideboards. The owners might want to consider updating the bathrooms and kitchen, particularly the floors.

We loved being right on the beach. The back porch was the best. We loved being able to eat outside, sit in the hammock, enjoy our coffee!
But the property is older and could've been cleaner. There was a child's bathing suit bottoms left behind in a bedroom-ick. And an encounter with a roach. I am sure it is difficult battling these bugs but did it make the house feel "clean" - No. Also, when I swept at the end of the week, I found candy from prior guests. So - not the cleanest. Can you call it an outside shower when it is totally exposed out in the open? Not really. How about a few wastebaskets for the bathrooms? Little things go a long way.

We loved the close proximity to the beach as well as to some of our favorite restaurants. Enjoyed the beautiful sunrise every morning. Such a great view from the property. We also saw dolphins almost daily. The property is adorable. Loved the artwork.

We have stayed here 2 yrs in a row & would probably stay again. Unfortunately, the cleanliness upon arrival leaves a lot to be desired. Aside from a quick vacuum & wipe down of the kitchen & bathrooms, it's dirty. Never been dusted so there are clumps of dust on the top of doors, windowsills, baseboards. Not great if you have asthma. The dishes are never clean, the coffee maker has never been cleaned and has mold in the water well. We usually have to come in & clean ourselves before we can use anything. The front door lock always seems to have problems (the deadbolt wouldn't even lock during our stay). These are easy to address things that never seem to be addressed (gave a similar review last year). Also, a super frustrating thing that should be corrected is the drop off of linens for the NEXT week's rental. They drop this heavy bin right in front of the front door 3 days before our trip is over. We are expected to move it somewhere or we can't even get out of the house. Super annoying and unnecessary. They should have a designated spot to put it that doesn't inconvenience those of us still in the house. So all in all, a great house but the management company could address these issues easily but never seem to read our reviews??

We always opt for oceanfront and we prefer the classic single-family beach boxes. Most have a "well-worn" character with lots of wood paneling and dated furniture. Not so with Molasses Reef! the living space and kitchen are painted bright white with colorful, quirky art everywhere. A huge flatscreen, great wifi and nice, comfy furniture made our indoor time very enjoyable. Beds are smallish but comfy and the two bathrooms were clean. What more can you want? The real appeal is the "right on the beach" location on a quiet stretch of Kitty Hawk about a 30-minute beach walk north of Avalon Pier. We loved the covered back deck to get out of the sun complete with lots of seating and a hammock. The quiet side deck was a nice bonus. This place is perfect for a family group of 4-6 people. We'd be happy to book here again.

They were impossible to use. There is no cabinet space for your own food so we ended up using the table as storage. This kept up from having family meals there. The good news is the kids loved eating at the counter anyway! Parking is terrible and there's no grill. Not much they can do about the parking since space is limited but a small charcoal grill would be very nice! A larger kitchen trash can is also needed. They have a very small one that doesn't work for a group of 6.

My husband has some mobility issues and it was difficult to find a cottage on the beach that didn't have a thousand steps. Additionally, the porch was low enough that while sitting you still have a magnificent view of the sand and surf which was great for monitoring children's play. The built in picnic table and hammock were great features as well. Inside was clean and met our needs. The WiFi and cable brought a small simple cottage into modern day. The bedrooms were average size, but the top bunk did not have a safety rail and therefore we did not use it. It is hard to get ON the beach on a budget... Molasses Reef made it possible!

The back deck was a God sent, after a long day on the beach the late afternoon on the swing was the perfect end to a day. No rain so we had no chance to shop, just enjoyed the nice beach with only a few steps back to the house. It is a must stay for this one, and we plan to be back. It was hard to close that door when it was time to leave.
