Breakfast was excellent. Pool very clean. Restaurant offered a varied Yucatecan and International menu. We were delighted with our local choice. Wine was generously poured. But it was the little things that count. Like identification of plants on the property. Embroidered cushions. Available umbrella. Mini-fridge. Extra blankets for cold nights. Original oil painting by the owner. Superb staff. A nod to the Mayan culture. Information booklet in our Mayan-inspired hut on area sights. An added plus: while there the Neem tree was in full blossom. The fragrance from that tree easily transported us to another level.

Great location to visit Uxmal. Staff was very attentive and friendly. Breakfast was very nice and it is a charming nature preserve-style setting with thatched roof huts for rooms.

I did not receive the email from the owner asking that I pay for the room in cash, so that was a small issue when I went to leave and tried to pay with a credit card. Also, be aware that this is a very “rustic” Style of accommodation. Our room had really quite a lot of small bugs and a few spiders, and there was a lizard running around in the rafters. I did not have the best nights sleep because I don’t handle that sort of thing real well. The hotel grounds are kept quite clean, I just think it’s the style of that thatched roof hut that allows for these creatures to get in.

Staff was great. Loved the pool, meals, and landscaping around the property.

Road noise and noise from the nearby ball fields made it less peaceful than I anticipated.

While lovely to look at, the palapa style rooms, particularly the only partial wall between bedroom and bathroom (wall doesn't go up to the ceiling) were not entirely to my taste

Every detail was spot on. Our family of 4 stayed in the family cabana and enjoyed a serene afternoon by the pool, exploring the considerable native plantings that create a dry jungle oasis. The staff was so thoughtful, and with excellent food for purchase on site plus a huge breakfast included in the price, this was a highlight of our brief stay in the Yucatan.

What wasn't to like? I only wish I had been able to stay longer. Valerie is a lovely lady and has created a beautiful place to relax and unwind. Each bungalow is tastefully decorated and the gardens are full of beautiful plants. I loved strolling the path in the morning. The staff was so friendly. Breakfast was amazing! I also had dinner and ordered a sack lunch for my day of visiting nearby ruins. The "box lunch" was well worth it with a nice sandwich, salad, water, fruit, chips and peanuts. Valerie makes everyone feel like family and greets them by name. Highly recommended!!!!

We stayed two nights in one of the wooden casitas that are located in the midst of a rainforest/botanical garden setting. We felt immersed in the sounds of nature, which was a quite unique experience. We brought a mosquito net for the bed which was not absolutely necessary but advisable. Breakfast was simple but tasty and is served in another beautiful setting created by the lovely host Valerie. The restaurant was equally great.

Water supply is a bit limited but this is expected in an off-the-grid location like this one.

I love this quiet property and hope I get to stay again. it’s in a perfect spot to explore Uxmal and surrounding areas.

The pool was a welcome facility after a long day of driving and visiting temples. Very quiet with birds singing and nicely surrounded by indigenous trees and plants. Our stay did not pre-include dinner but we had a very nicely prepared dinner of local dishes.

The property and gardens are beautiful and very well maintained. The garden plants have labels so that you know what they are. Having a pool on site was a must as it gets really hot and it was refreshing to use every day and is a very pretty setting. Also having a bar and restaurant on site is very nice and helpful. This is an excellent location for exploring ruins and cenotes. The owner is very helpful and knowledgeable. There is a very informative info book in the rooms that will help guide you around as well. The rooms have a mini-fridge to stock up on water and other items. Breakfast was included each morning and was a very nice touch and was larger than a lot of included breakfasts you get at hotels. The breakfast patio is beautiful.

The owner does a very good job of sending messages before your stay to level-set expectations - so none of these items was a surprise, but we did not expect them to the level of our experience because of other very good reviews. Also, the time of our visit was VERY hot which adds to these complications. The AC is not very strong, you are not able to leave your AC on if you are not at your room (ours was turned off, understandable to save energy) so your room cooks and then you have to try to cool it when you return from a hot day. The ceiling fan pushed the hot air around instead of helping the cool air reach the bed at night, we had to turn it off (the beds could be placed right under the AC, might help the cool air hit better). Once we turned off the fan, the bugs were able to get to us. There were a lot of bugs in our room - this is the jungle, so to be expected. A bug net was not available. In the end, it was too hot to get under the sheets to sleep but the bugs were biting if you were not covered up. We just didn't really sleep, unfortunately. If there was a bug net, there would not have been a problem - or if the rooms were able to cool down better, sheets would have helped. The bed we had was very hard, but my husband did not have an issue with it at all, so that is a personal preference. Having clear jungle expectations is important as a visitor (we have tent-camped in Palenque and in Tikal); the price to stay here had my expectations set a little higher.

Amazing place within a gorgious garden of tropical plants. Nice swimming pool and the staff and restaurant were the highlights. The owner Valerie makes sure you feel at home and is always up for a good chat and has loads of tips for archeological adventures and nice cenotes and hacienda's.

Some bugs and gekko's in your cabin but that is unavoidable in nature, the cabin itself is equiped to keep them out as much as possible.

Room was small for 4 persons! It was a 2-person hut with 2 double beds..... As it says on the email we received, as well as in the information leaflet in the room, that dinner is open until 8:30pm, we found the restaurant closed at 8pm. The owner blamed the receptionist not to have told that to us, which I find very unprofessional ("He should have told you"). Attitude of the owner was not very nice when I told her that it was her responsability to have the leaflets in order, and not the staff. She did not agree. Also the email we received from her in advance, was not very welcoming. It only gave us info about the tips you´d give to people, and that maybe the dinnertime was not very convenient but hey, we are in a small village...... ????

The Pickled Onion is located in the heart of Mayaland. It has a beautiful garden and very cool huts (literally - we didn’t need a fan or air conditioning at all). The food is absolutely delicious and Valerie is a wonderful host. We stayed only for 2 nights and regret not staying any longer - there’s so many things to do in the area!!!

We liked everything about our stay. Excellent reception and beautiful little Mayan cottage with a porch for sitting, set in a lovely garden. The pool and breakfast area had gorgeous bougainvillea and other tropical plants. Breakfast was generous and delicious, service was wonderful. Our room was dark at night, quiet, had a/c but we didn’t need it. The owner was attentive to guests’ needs and made nice recommendations for day trips. Top notch.

Breakfast was served on an outdoor terrace, it was excellent, and it was part of the base price.

This is one those place you wish you had stayed longer, we stayed one night. The little cabana style rooms were really great and comfortable. The sound of the wildlife was great to wake up to in the morning. We met Valarie, who was great to talk to and helpful. Hope you get your trip sorted out to the UK. The room had aircon but we didn't need as the rooms were very cool. We ate there and the food was great as was the cocktails Really enjoyed our short stay.

This place is an oasis. Book it, don't even hesitate. But better hurry because it seems like it is always full. The large grounds of this place are gorgeous, shady, lush and well maintained. Santa Elena is a small town with almost no options for restaurants, and honestly, the restaurant here was so good we didn't need to go searching anywhere else. The pool was fantastic, lots of chaise lounges to sit in, and even a hammock over the water. The thatched roof rooms are charming and nestled in shady spots each with its own little path. Rooms have small table and chairs outside, which are appreciated The rooms have hammocks in the them! It was nice that they refill water bottles because constantly buying drinking water from plastic bottles is not sustainable. The breakfast area is just perfectly placed in a separate area that is surrounded with birds, banana trees, greenery. Valerie, who owns the place, likes to visit with guests in the morning and is a wealth of information and fun history. If I could live here, I would!

We booked the larger family room. It is the one closest to the road. It was noisy and was in the sun and not quite as nice as the other rooms. Seems like it wasn't completely finished, the towel racks were not usable, no curtains even though there was a direct line of site from our hut to the office. One other thing bugged me. The refrigerator in our room didn't work. When I mentioned it to the owner, she was surprisingly unhelpful, which seemed strangely out of character for her, since she was so nice at all our other interactions.
