We had a wonderful stay at Shugafoot. Right on the beach is a huge priority for us, and this cottage does not disappoint. Our doggies loved the fenced in deck.

Each year our family rents a house in different location along the Outer Banks. This year we chose Kitty Hawk. We loved the beach front property and convenient walk to the beach. The deck view was fabulous. Our favorite part is that the place was pet friendly and equipped with a doggie gate on the deck. Thank you for an enjoyable stay.

Steps from the beach. You will see dolphins in the morning, ghost crabs at night. The beach is uncrowded, and waves are perfect for wave boarding. Reco: Holly Ridge golf practice facility, Shipwrecks lunch and dinner (crab cake sandwich and wings), Stack em High breakfast, and Lost Treasure Mini Golf. FYI: garbage is Tues, Thurs, and Sat mornings at 3am.

The surf and the breeze. It was great. Spent most of our time on the deck watching the waves come in. We never even took our beach chairs over the dune. Didn’t need to we were so close on the deck. Nice kitchen. Nice quiet neighborhood.

Quiet and private area. Close to several restaurants and grocery stores. Loved the deck. Kitchen was very nice and well equipped. Little rough around the edges but nice place to spend the week.

I am not a picky person when it comes to vacation homes, as long as it is clean. The only complaints that I have are that when we arrived & entered the house there were a gazillion flies inside. I imagine the cleaning crew must have had the doors open while they were cleaning. The couches & throw pillows could use a good cleaning. I just covered the sofas with fitted sheets because I knew our furbabies would be on them. Glad I did because they were pretty dirty. The floors were not cleaned under the furniture & beds. Lots of dust & pet hair. The parking area is barely enough room for 3 vehicles to park. The outside water did not work to wash off sand before going in the house. We made everything work but had to go buy fly swatters & fly killer & move vehicles every time one of us wanted to go somewhere. There is no parking under the house like the website says. It is boarded up & full of sand. Overall our stay was good but I think the host agent should go out & check the cleanliness of the property & what is and is not working anymore.

Our two sons daughter in law and 2 year old grandson and three dogs stayed a week and could not be more happy. The views are the BEST, place is beautiful. Full kitchen, plenty of rooms and bathrooms the deck is plenty big and can be locked with gate to keep baby and dogs from escaping. Dolphins and whales and sunsets did not disappoint. Close to nightlife and restaurants and yet far enough you wouldn't know they were there. Fast responses for small questions from Mark. Highly recommend and hope to stay again.

My family and I came to the OBX for my youngest sons 1st birthday. Having 3 kids ages 4 and under plus a dog we wanted to be near the beach so we could easily go back and forth for naps, food, and other needs. This home was perfect for that. We spent many evening in the deck watching boats and the sunset. The kids had a blast and we were about to go to the beach everyday we were there. We are definatrly planning a trip back. Any one looking to rent this property we only had 2 small issues. There were some overgrown shrubs in the neighbors yard so it was near impossible to see if traffic was coming while backing out of the driveway. Also be super careful on the steps outside. I never did find the reason but I fell down them twice from the same spot.

I require my beach rentals to be right on the beach and to take dogs. This one did both so that explains the 4-star rating. The deck and deck chairs were quite nice and the view of the Atlantic was superb. Breezes are very comfortable and, obviously, the walk to the beach couldn't be shorter or much easier. The house itself has issues. The kitchen has badly warped flooring that won't inconvenience you, but it is sloppy. The bedrooms are spare. The main bathroom toilet is located in such a narrow space that I'm many larger people would struggle to use it. Fortunately, that was not a problem for my mother, who stayed with us, but, as I wrote, larger people would have a real problem. Apart from the warped flooring, the kitchen is quite nice and relatively modern. There was a lot of sand on the couch in the living area when we arrived and that all had to be cleaned out. The interior of the house is far from luxurious; how much that matters to you is up to you. We have been to the Outer Banks many times and this was the fartherst north we have ever stayed. I thought Kitty Hawk was quite nice and convenient and have no complaints about that. This house is best for people who want to be outside as much as possible, which describes me, my son, and my mother. We spent almost every waking moment, apart from food preparation, on the deck or the beach. If you're looking for a vacation propery right on the beach, that takes dogs, and has a nice deck and views of the ocean, this house will suit you. If you prefer to spend more time indoors and want a more pampered environment inside the house, you may not be satisfied with this property. I wish you luck.

Upon arrival, we could see why everyone mentioned hiking the dune to the beach. It definitely became easier by weeks end. The house was the perfect size for us. The renovations are beautiful. The full deck facing the ocean is it's own little paradise. The weather cooperated, and we didn't have any rain. Fishing by weeks end was definitely better. All in all we had a marvelous time. Thank you Mark for everything. It was awesome.

Location is right on the beach and can’t be beat. We really enjoyed the views from the porch and saw pods of dolphins several times during our stay. Our dog enjoyed the porch as well and the gate to keep it closed was key. The beach location itself was not crowded, and because we were so close it was easy to go down for a walk or just a quick dip in the ocean if we wanted to. The beds were soft, mattresses a little too soft for anyone with a bad back. Kitchen had the items we needed (though oddly only one wine glass). Besides sheets and bath & beach towels, we were glad we brought bath mats, kitchen towels, and toilet paper. We had to buy trash bags, paper towels, and dish soap which I wish I knew we needed so we could have brought it with us instead. In the laundry room later in our stay we did discover some boogie boards, a few beach toys and an umbrella which could come in handy. Overall it was an easy place to stay, host was very communicative, and the kids and dog loved it.

Amazing week in Kitty Hawk! The views from the deck were absolutely amazing. Our dogs (and children) could not get enough of the breeze and view of the ocean. We really appreciated the gate on the deck! The location is perfect, and the beach was quiet, beautiful, and so incredibly close! We also enjoyed the dolphins several times! Like others have mentioned below, the house could use a deep cleaning (fans, fixtures, blinds, windows/doors, under/behind furniture, trash can lid, etc…). It would ask be helpful to have a small vacuum/sweeper. It’s a lovely layout and worked great for our family, but the back slider handle is broken, kitchen utensils and pots are grimy/greasy, drying rack is rusty, shower curtain is moldy, and the laundry area is terrifying (and inconvenient).

We enjoyed our time in the outer banks and the home’s location was incredible. However, we were disappointed with a few things. The home appears to need a good spring cleaning. In addition, we found cockroaches throughout the time we stayed during the week. The manager of the property was responsive and offered remedy’s but which were not helpful and we had to deal with this issue thought out our stay. Specifically, having an exterminator show up to spray for them but this was not acceptable as we have small children and a dog we did not want exposed to any chemicals. Additionally, there were not basic supplies provided such as a roll of toilet paper or a roll of paper towels. We have stayed in numerous VRBO sites and this was a first on all accounts.

Perfect location. The front of the house had a sliding door & 2 windows facing the ocean; therefore; we were seeing the ocean all day!! The front porch was great - one evening we watched about 20 dolphins swim by. It was close to shopping & restaurants. Perfect vacation!!

The house was comfortable and equipped with plenty of amenities. The deck was the best part, with awesome views of the beach, easy access to beach, and plenty of patio chairs. Kitchen, beds, living room, wifi, tv etc were all fine. A/C was new and worked great too. Plenty of books and games also stocked in the house. The only exception and reason for poor cleanliness was the presence of ROACHES. if I could give zero stars for cleanliness I would. Big ones, small ones, in kitchen, living room and bedroom. It took us several days of pesticide and traps to make the house acceptable. We even considered going to a hotel to sleep and just use the house for the day, but opted to fight the bugs and not let them ruin our stay. I sprayed each day, morning, afternoon, and evening which seemed to work. We started to see dead ones appear, then none at all but we were always on the lookout for them. We kept our luggage zipped tight and were careful to keep all food items in fridge and seal the trash or take it out each day. It made for an uncomfortable week even though the location, and amenities were all very nice. Windows could use cleaning and there were torn screens and a bath window stuck open which we duck taped to keep out flies. But with a professional exterminator, and some simple repairs this house would be perfect for a nice beach vacation.

We had a great time directly on the beach! House was very comfy and had everything we needed. Our dog was just happy to be the deck looking out.

The gated back deck was a delight for all (especially our 20-lb dog) and a prime dolphin-watching spot. It was a quiet location nestled in the dunes (not next to noisy bars/restaurants), while proximity to stores and restaurants was an added perk. Furniture was comfortable and the house had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Owner was very responsive. Would definitely stay here again.

Very smooth and easy process. A quiet stretch of beach, but lots of good food within a mile or so. Highly recommend.

It was a nice little house, and the view was fabulous. Access to the beach was difficult because of the way the house is situated on top of the dune. The only way to get to the beach was to climb up and over the dune; there was no walkway. The driveway was off a main road, which I imagine would be a nightmare to get in and out of during the busy season, but it was fine in March. The driveway was not lit, and the sand had drifted in so we had to climb over a mini-dune just to get to the stairs to access the house. Only the code was provided in email regarding check-in. We arrived after dark; had to call the owner because the key box was located at the bottom of the stairs, where we didn't think to look because the entrance was at the top, and it was dark! The owner did call right back, but was unresponsive to an email sent regarding the open utility room, where the laundry was located. Location was close to shops and restaurants by car, although even in the off season, it seemed unsafe for biking.

Shugafoot is literally right on the beach. It is awesome. There is a front porch that runs the width of the house and you could sit outside for hours watching the surf. Everything was very comfortable and cozy. We were there in February so of course we didn’t swim, but we did walk in the beach a lot and we certainly enjoyed that front porch. We had a wonderful stay!

Shugafoot's oceanfront views are spectacular. It is a quaint home that fits our needs perfectly for the holiday. The updates that were done in 2020 were very nice.

Sugafoot is a great house in an excellent location! really enjoyed the direct beach access and falling asleep listening to the surf each night. Older House has an authentic, vintage-OBX-charm feel for a relaxing stay with an upgraded kitchen making cooking easy. Would gladly return!

The home photographs well, but it is not nearly as nice as the pictures. First, dirty: the sofa is cloth a brown in spots, pilled, and dingy. The kitchen garbage can, all garbage cans, were sticky and COVERED in gunk. Bathroom with lots of hair and mildew in showers. Second: shoddy remodel that was cheaply done… many spots missing paint, the floor is soft in spots, can’t get the master closet open very far… the master toilet is SO cramped that a grown man has to stand sideways to pee… forget #2. Number 3: The beds are horrendous, so squeaky and uncomfortable…. When my husband moved in bed it nearly bounced me out Number 4: that drive way is a hazard to back out of as the dunes are so high on each side. Number 5: the laundry room is scary. Pros: the deck is amazing Never again for our family, we left 3 days early.

This was our first year vacationing in OBX and we had a blast! The house was clean, the beach was soooo close, and the views were spectacular. There's plenty of good dining within a mile but the area around the house is really quiet and peaceful.

The location is excellent, close to everything, and directly on the beach. A lot of the house has been remodel and the older parts are well kept. The kitchen is beautiful and has everything you need. The ocean front deck was by far my favorite part of this house. It is the whole length of the house and we loved that half of it was covered. We would definitely stay here again!!

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Shugafoot. Perfect location, perfect for four adults and two children. Highly recommended.

It’s hard to be closer to the surf than this cottage! So convenient when setting up chairs on the beach, or when dolphin watching from the covered deck. Really enjoyed our getaway! Though be very careful when backing out from the driveway, the view to the road is a bit limited.

Shugafoot was the perfect spring break getaway for our family, which included me and my husband, our two girls, and grandma. It is a relatively small home but the space was used very wisely, well-decorated, and well-appointed with what we needed in the kitchen. If I have to comment on one thing first- that view. There really are just no words for having a completely unobstructed view of the water, sunrises, sunsets, birds, sky, all of it. The very new deck runs the entire width of the house with some portions covered, some open, and ample seating. We really loved the dog gate which was extremely convenient. We really liked the clearly remodeled kitchen and decor. Some areas of the house haven’t been redone as much- but very much felt like a traditional OBX beach cottage and we loved it. If I got to have one wish list for that home, I would have loved to have a hot tub on the porch to watch the ocean- but- since you are steps from the water, we spent every waking moment walking on the beach.For Spring Break week- this was the most perfect house for us and I would book again in a heartbeat.
