Indigo House
Welcome to Indigo House, a beautifully appointed home on the hill above Governors Harbour, Eleuthera. Indigo has spectacular harbor and sea views, and is within walking distance of shops, restaurants and the pink sands of world famous French Leave Beach.
Indigo has a large private swimming pool, three outdoor dining areas, and a harbor-view terrace, a perfect location to watch the sun set over the Caribbean. The main upper level of Indigo House features spectacular harbour views from all major rooms. It contains a large foyer and an open-plan living and dining room elegantly furnished from Restoration Hardware. The spacious living room has ample lounge seating, and an office area furnished with a vintage desk. The dining room features a 15-foot table with seating for up to 18. The kitchen is fully equipped with modern appliances (all new!), including a five-burner gas range, and provides counter seating for three.
The master bedroom, also on the upper level of the house, has a king bed and beautiful harbour views. A second king bedroom on the upper level overlooks the pool and gardens. Each has a full bathroom with a walk-in shower.
The lower level has a second spacious living room that opens onto a covered terrace leading down to the lush tropical gardens. There is a full kitchen downstairs for guests' convenience. The downstairs level has two bedrooms, one king (plus a single day bed) and one queen, each with a full bathroom. There is also a sofa bed in the downstairs living room. With the day bed and the sofa bed, Indigo can sleep up to 10 guests.
A tropical garden surrounds charming Indigo House. Amenities include air conditioning throughout, ceiling fans in every room, washer and dryer, STARLINK super-fast high speed internet, TV, iPod dock, a landline telephone, gas grill, water filtration system, and a bicycle.
The town of Governors Harbour, a two-minute walk down the hill, has a charming collection of 19th century homes and churches overlooking its historic harbor. Buy fresh fish and lobster every afternoon from fisherman at the town dock, or visit the recently restored Haynes Library, which dates from 1897, for the weekly coffee hour for foreign residents and tourists. Governors Harbour has grocery stores, restaurants, liquor stores, two banks with ATMs, a bakery, gift shops, a dive shop, and a medical clinic. Friday Night Fish Fry in Governors Harbour, a street/beach party that brings together all the tourists and locals with food, drink, and dancing in the street, is not to be missed.
Walking down the hill in the other direction takes you to French Leave Beach, the finest beach on the island and one of the great beaches of the hemisphere. By foot, it’s less than ten minutes to French Leave, a mile-long crescent of pink sand that is usually deserted. Most visitors to Eleuthera rent a car during their stay, because the island is rural and spread out, and a car is the only practical way to get around. By car, Indigo House is just a minute from French Leave Beach.
Eleuthera is famous for its 100 miles of spectacular, deserted beaches. The island, home to just 8000 residents, is completely safe any time of the day or night. Enjoy the rare experience of picking up hitch-hikers and leaving your keys in the car wherever you go. The snorkeling, diving, and fishing on the island are world class. Boating, surfing, and other water sports are also popular. You can rent power boats, sailboats, sea kayaks, bikes. You can have a charter captain take you out for excursions of various types, including fishing. There is excellent sightseeing as well. Eleuthera has vast caves, cliffs, a bottomless ocean hole, many unique beaches, historic churches and 19th century homes, and small villages to explore.

A Week at Indigo
For our first trip to Eleuthera, we decided on Indigo House to be in Governor's Harbor (five of us, 3 children in their 20s). Walked to Da Perk, Buccaneer, 1648, Bacchus (the bread!) This house does not disappoint. Very private even though it is in town. Plenty of room to spread out. The kitchen is so well equipped, cooking was fun! The outdoor spaces were the best. We ate our meals overlooking the harbor. The kids used the A/C at night downstairs, but we didn't need it on the main level. Lots of coolers, variety of beach chairs, even some snorkel equipment. Since we visited in Feb. the pool was cool, but we quickly got used to it (same temp at ocean). Elizabeth was very responsive and helped with details and directions. As for the beaches, French Leave was the best, so this house is ideally located! Yes, the roosters and chickens are pretty noisy, but way better than roads, construction, planes, etc. that we experience in the US. The silence of Eleuthera was a pleasant surprise.

Could not have been better!!
Our stay at Indigo House was fantastic. We chose this rental as a last-minute replacement for one that I had gone sideways and we’re so lucky that it had just come available after some recent renovations and updates. The location in Governors Harbour is ideal with gorgeous views, walkability to plenty and what felt like complete privacy. Some days we tried to agree on whether we felt like we’re were staying near the coast of Italy, Costa Rica or the Bahamas. The roosters crowing were a perfect addition to the experience and although we heard them often, they were welcomed and far better than any noises we would hear at home. The house caretaker, Elizabeth, is a gem and so helpful with the house tour and orientation of the home. We understand that sometimes in rental properties things don’t work. We had an issue with the grill one night and Elizabeth and the owners had a solution almost immediately the next day. That was impressive. The gas oven was a bit tricky just because some of the knobs were not labeled and there was some troubleshooting but we got it figured out. We came home one evening to a hot lasagna Elizabeth baked for our family as a surprise after a day of touring southern Eleuthera. We were able to walk to the Friday Fish Fry and had a blast and great local Bahamian fare. Indigo House fit our group of 2 adults and 4 teens nicely with plenty of room to spare. The outdoor shower and pool were so great at the end of a long hot beach day at French Leave or Twin Coves beaches or after a day of touring other parts of Eleuthera. We were lucky enough to meet the Owner and enjoyed that connection as well. We hope to make it back and will definitely stay at Indigo House upon our return.
