What a magical experience to stay on the grounds of Newstead Abbey! Gorgeous property all to yourself after hours, with loads of birds and natural beauty. The cottage is clean and comfortable, very quiet and relaxing. You will need a car. I hope to stay here again!

The property was situated in beautiful grounds, but the actual property was far from what was advertised. There were a few issues and the major one was the leaking toilet and the shower where you could not really take a shower for longer than 10 seconds. It would go scorching hot and then cold within a few seconds. We also arrived on time but the people who were supposed to get the property ready were not made aware of us coming. We had to wait for over 45 minutes to get into the property and even then, it wasn't ready. We left the property cleaner than we found it.
On a positive note, the grounds the property was on were really lovely. The staff that worked at the Abbey were really nice as well. We were given so many different directions on how to get to the property, it was really confusing. One staff member told us to go down a road that took us into other people's properties and another staff member told us we couldn't drive down to the actual cottage and had to walk and carry our cases to the property.
That wasn't correct, obviously, and we were glad we didn't listen to that advice.
It was a bit of a let-down with the cleanliness and the hot water issue. If this was fixed, the property would be amazing. The price we paid for what we got was a bit too much. I would really look around for other properties and go and visit the grounds separately without having to stay there.

It was a real privilege to be able to stay in the grounds of Newstead Abbey. Access to the gardens and house was quick and easy and all of the on site staff were super friendly. We had a relaxed and enjoyable time. Enough literature for adults to read and board games for children.
The negatives: no response from the house manager until we contacted VRBO directly. House was cold when we arrived after a very wet drive - it doesn’t take much to ensure a warm cottage for arrivals. We had to adjust the boiler temperature and the radiators ourselves to get warm. Don’t bother to bath - the boiler is unreliable and the water runs hot very briefly, and more often it is cold. We had luke warm showers each day.
The kitchen, although well-stocked, has no space to prepare food - it needs a console table to do so. The flat roof to the scullery leaked in the rain.
The man double bed was very hard, but the bed linen was super.
On a personal note, I do think that NCC have missed a trick here. The decor is modern and fairly cheap. Although the gardener would not have lived salubriously, there is so much reasonably priced period furniture about, that furniture could well be acquired to suit the correct period of the cottage.
No wi- fi or mobile signal, which was useful if you wanted to read, but no use if you wanted to share the fabulous photos on social media!

The location is amazing; beautiful slightly wild gardens, shimmering lakes, abundant wildlife, quiet corners, lush vegetation and majestic ancient trees. The cottage is delightful; warm, welcoming, immaculately clean, comfortably furnished and sympathetically refurbished. The enclosed courtyard afforded a sheltered spot to enjoy coffee and company.

Gardener's Cottage is a very special and a truly unique place. Set in the grounds of a former Abbey, which is steeped in history. When the grounds close at 5 o'clock, you are left alone on the estate with the rabbits, squirrels, swans and peacocks. Be prepared to never want to leave the grounds, unless it is just so that you can enjoy driving back in. There is no wi-fi, but we got decent mobile signal within 20 yards of the front door. I feel lucky to have had the chance to stay there. We are planning when we can go back.

Our little break was everything we could have wished for, and more. The setting was stunning with a 'wow' around every turn through the gardens and woodland. We left with the feeling that we must return. Thank you for this opportunity to comment as we didn't find a guest book. Each and every member of staff we encountered was so friendly and helpful.

Thank you.

Wonderful experience
We stayed for three peaceful nights in the beautiful Gardener's cottage. Coming from the U.S., it was so relaxing to hear the sheep at night and stroll in the breathtaking gardens. My two teenage daughters bought duck food from the gift shop and we sat by the pond and fed some baby swans along with Mom and Dad! We walked side-by-side with the most beautiful peacocks I've ever seen and even caught a glimpse of a Mother and baby! Our stay at Newstead will be a treasure for our family and my only regret would be that we didn't stay longer!

Beautiful and Unique Stay
Staying at the Gardeners Cottage has been one of my favorite traveling experiences. The Cottage is beautiful and well-stocked, and it's amazing to wake up on the grounds of Newstead Abbey every morning. Hosts were extremely accomodating and very good at communicating information on how to get to the cottage. I will definitely stay here again!

A gem of a find
A unique opportunity for our family of three to stay in a remote cottage in the grounds of an Abbey . The cottage was beautiful, bigger than it looked in the pictures. It was very clean and had everything we needed for a two nights stay over New Year. It was nice to walk around the grounds at our leisure and to tour the Abbey for free. A few visitors to the Abbey/ grounds did walk close to the cottage front door but not close enough to look in, they were respectful and didn't intrude on our space.
All the staff we met were really nice and helpful.
A little hard to find in the dark on arrival although clear directions were provided but we couldn't get service on our phone to read them! Wifi in the actual cottage was better upstairs but it wasn't a problem not being glued to our phones.
We would love to return.

Away with grandkids
Delightful. Lovely cottage, well furnished, adequately warm, in middle of grounds with access after hours to garden much appreciated by children of 9 and 7 years (especially the Japanese Garden). Excellent tour of house included in package with expert guide who dealt wonderfully well with the children. Kitchen small but very usable. Good laundry room. Comfortable beds. Highly recommeded for a family of four.

Great half term break
A great location for a short break. The cottage has everything you need, the staff where lovely, the play park for the kids was an added bonus. The peahens that live near the cottage were great for the kids. As long as you don’t need mobile connection this place is brilliant. Loved it.

Absolutely unique opportunity to enjoy a nations monument as if it was your own!
We had a relaxing break and enjoyed exploring the Abbey grounds at our leisure. Also got a guided tour of the house included. Only drawback no wifi and poor mobile server coverage however not a big sacrifice considering our enjoyment of the location. We will be back!

Waking up in the morning to birdsong among the great trees and gardens was a peaceful and refreshing experience. Early morning walks and breakfast in the walled courtyard were wonderful. The property is comfortable and well equipped. Our only reservation was the poor telephone reception.

Lovely stay with young family at Newstead
Stayed here for 4 nights with our young family and loved it. We was literally locked in every night with all the grounds and parkland to ourselves and the wildlife! Loved it and great location with a pub just outside the grounds so perfect!! Sherwood Forest is on the doorstep and towns such as Mansfield (10 mins away) for supplies isn’t far away. We visited the peak district for a day trip too that was only 40 mins away.
The staff at Newstead were fantastic and helpful. We was allowed to visit the main house for free and was made to feel welcomed. The parkland was amazing. We Loved it and will return.

We loved the Gardener's Cottage. We stayed with our two children (7 & 9) and mother in law, who was happy on the sofa-bed. The cottage is tastefully decorated and much more spacious than it looks in the photos. It's an idyllic location, tucked away from the world with only peafowl and wood pigeons for neighbours. Great walks and fascinating history. We enjoyed our tour of the Abbey, and the staff were very welcoming. We even joined the outdoor cinema two nights in a row. We will be back!

Loved having a few days in the gardeners cottage, it was quiet, well equipped and just idyllic! The kids loved wandering around once the gates were closed and being able to play on the park 50 yards away! It was so peaceful and quiet! It really is a special stay! It was weird not having internet and the phone signal struggled a little, but I actually quiet like being forced to switch off and enjoy the amazing surroundings without distraction. Would love to stay here again.

Peaceful break
A comfortable cottage set in beautiful surroundings. Clean and well equipped. A perfect place for a relaxing break. It didn’t have WiFi but in some respects that was good. NewStead abbey is a beautiful setting with gorgeous gardens to enjoy. Great watching the wildlife and we enjoyed sitting in the sunny back courtyard for breakfast.

Fantastic Cottage
We had a wonderful time at the cottage, the grounds were fantastic and the abbey was fascinating to look around. The only thing to be aware of is that in order to get to and from the cottage whilst the abbey is closed is via a gate with a key code, moving a bollard, and then a gate with a padlock. It wasn’t a problem for us but might be for some people. Also there had been heavy rain before we arrived and the drive way to park at the back of the property was very water logged.

Gardner’s Cottage at Newstead Abbey
Absolutely beautiful place. Having grounds of the Abbey available was great. We stayed for a short break and enjoyed the environment so much, we didn’t leave site at all during our stay. We had three generations in our group, and we all loved it. Young children enjoyed the stay without getting bored at all
