We recently stayed at this charming house as we came to hike Mt. Whitney. This is about as close as you can stay to the Portal without being in the campground, and the nearby Alabama Hills were a delightful surprise.
If you're looking to be pampered in a sterile environment, this is not your place. If you're looking for a comfortable, restful place, with elements of history and local flair, now you're talking. We stayed during the heat of summer, and the swamp cooler kept the main areas cool, but if you want the bedrooms cool, you have to keep the doors open; there are a couple day beds in the living room, and my wife chose wisely to sleep on one of those. By the owners' admission, there are also a few small ants that make their way inside (many more outside); I'm guessing it's a losing battle, and they're not big on blasting them with a nonstop stream of chemicals. They were a minor annoyance, but not the end of the world.
All in all, if I was going back to Lone Pine, I'd 100% stay there again. It's what VRBO was initially meant to be: a home away from home. For us, it was a place of respite bookending a grueling hike to the Mt. Whitney summit.

We really enjoyed the home and especially our hosts during our stay. They were so very nice and accommodating. We were so thrilled when they came out to welcome us back “home” from our hiking adventure to the summit of Mt. Whitney. Sarah and Jaime were truly great, helped us be prepared with tips, and provided such a positive and stress free environment to rest and spend a beautiful time with friends. We loved the views from the windows and the peaceful backyard. This is a great choice for exploring Lone Pine, Mt. Whitney, the Alabama Hills, or anything in the area. We hope to be back again!

My friend and I wanted a comfortable basecamp for our Whitney adventures. This was IT! I enjoyed the quirks of the house, and the vintage decor. Everything we could have wanted was available to us. My bed was also very comfortable. We took walks at sunset amongst the Alabama Hills, drove up to Horseshoe Meadow to explore and acclimate, then set off to summit.
How glad were we to come back to a shower, and the comforts of a home. I think we are over our dirty camping days!
Everything worked for us! it was hot, and the cooler was just right. We also used the bbq without issues. I appreciated that Jamie and Sarah encouraged composting. Highly would recommend to friends, and would rent again myself.

We stayed at this property as a jumping-off point for a visit to Death Valley National Park, and for that purpose, it was wonderful! The kitchen was an especial highlight, with a dated but well-maintained range that worked great and the best pots, pans, and cutlery I've ever had in a rental. The house itself was a little dark in the evenings, but there was plenty of natural light---and gorgeous views!---through the windows during the daytime. Communications with the host were prompt and courteous, and the neighborhood was exceptionally quiet.
The only thing that I wish I'd known before our stay: apparently the local fire station sets off a siren when there's something going on in the middle of the night. The second night we were there, a siren that sounded like an old air raid siren went off briefly at 3am then at 3:15am. After checking to make sure there was no emergency affecting us, we were able to get back to sleep, but if we'd known about this before, we could have skipped the search around the house and the check online for any emergency alerts.
I'm still giving this property 5 stars, though, because I would definitely stay here again.

This is not your typical rental, but a home with personal amenities. The hosts were fantastic and provided thorough instructions on how to check in and out. The property is located with a view of mt Whitney and Alabama hills. We loved our stay here.

Of all the places I’ve stayed in my life, for me this is number one by far. I’m 77 and have traveled to many places and many counties. This is by far the best. The yard and garden are real special. The home is so very homey. I can’t say enough.

Fantastic home right by the portal to Mt Whitney. Terrific hosts who were very good at communicating their expectations. The home is wonderfully decorated. We will be back. :)

If you are planning on staying anywhere near here, this is the place plain and simple. location, location, location. My only wish would be to have known of this place 10 years ago

Great place, extremely proximal to many near by climbs and hikes. The small neighborhood felt extremely safe and offered extraordinary views of the surrounding terrain. I highly recommend staying at this property if you need more than a couple days to obtain your trip’s agenda. Very nice to have all the amenities of home on this particular trip.
The house was mostly original and had many unique features, offering a lot of charm and a bit of history. We’ll be back for sure.

Perfect for us. Well stocked, comfortable, beds good.
Owner tells you, but only issue is ants. You need to be very careful leaving food out. Someone had an energy drink open after Whitney. In the morning reached to drink it and got ants. Just something to know.

The Hidden World
Driving up 395 in the desert is beautiful. Then turn left to go up Lubken Canyon Road and you feel like you are the Hana Road in South Maui. Climb a bit higher onto Tuttle Creek, and you are in the mountains. This is truly a unique area! The house itself is incredibly comfortable inside and out. The way Sarah decorated this place is so cool that I can't begin to describe how fun it was. You can have a contest to count the number of "hang out areas" on this property! The hosts are amazing and kind souls. We just love them for sharing this place with others and their kindness. Thanks so much for the hospitality! We'll be back to this hidden world again many times!

This home is a great base camp for exploring all the Lone Pine area has to offer which is a lot! The house itself is not far from the most wonderful canyon in the scenic Alabama Hills. The view of Lone Pine Peak & Mount Whitney from the front of the house is glorious. This home is perfect for a couple. Neighborhood is super quiet except for that strange siren someone else mentioned in a review but that seldom happens. Loved all the wildlife in the yard, especially being serenaded by doves & watching the quail families. Thank you for a terrific location to celebrate our anniversary! Jo & Mike

The uniqueness of the property’s decor and location made us fall in love with it. We could tell a lot of effort and history helped to create this home. It was the peaceful retreat our family needed. We’d love to return.
P.S. We very much appreciated the eco-friendliness (recycling and composting!!)

Our party was 4 adults and so the accommodations were spacious for us. The home was clean and the views east and west were lovely. The kitchen was well stocked with kitchen utensils. The neighborhood was quiet except for a puzzling local siren for one minute at 6:15 a.m. the first morning. We have no idea what that was! The backyard was a lovely place to relax in the evening after a day out exploring. We enjoyed watching the sun rise on the Sierras (and Mt Whitney) each morning early. There are beautiful lilacs blooming and we walked the property and found many new fruit trees planted. The only thing the four of us noted is that the living room furniture is actually twin beds. So there isn't the most comfortable seating for conversation. We highly recommend this location and the hosts were very communicative.

A very comfortable home - lots of counter and drawer space to put our stuff, well equipped kitchen, comfortable beds. Because of the comfy bed and quiet neighborhood, I slept well every night, which never happens when I travel. Although the house is older, everything works well and the decor is fun. Jaime was responsive to my questions. Thank you.
One minor suggestioin: It'd be great to have a cooking spoon in the kitchen. (It could be that I just didn't look hard enough when I was making soup one night.)

Our 2nd time here was as wonderful as the 1st. The house was cozy during a winter snowfall, which made the yard the perfect place to explore and play for the kids. Nothing beats looking out the window at Mt. Whitney while being warmed by the wood stove and enjoying the well-stocked and beautifully decorated home. Being walking distance to the Alabama Hills was ideal for staying local while still getting out & about in the spectacular landscape.

after a year of delay we were excited to finally visit the Owens Valley. smoke from the Sequoia fires obscured the Sierras on our first day but the smoke cleared on the second and for us from the east the view was awesome. the house is located well for exploring Death Valley, drives and hikes into the mountains, discovering the Alabama Hills. Lone Pine, for a small town, offers some interestng diversions and dining/drinking options. the house was designed well with interesting decore, layed out to offer privacy and common space at the same time. however if your party is larger than 4 someone is on the couch. the outside has great views front and back with plenty of comfortable spaces to enjoy .

We stayed 3 nights in the Lone Pine house and had a wonderful time. The house and property were very nice, from the many pear, apricot and even a couple of fig trees that gave us some fresh fruit. Sitting on the patio in all of the cool chairs was relaxing. Easy access to Alabama Hills and the surrounding area was so easy. Don't miss the taco truck in town for some good food. Nice meeting Jamie when he came over to set the trash out to the curb. Will be back.
