We had a small family “reunion” - family visiting a sibling who lives in Kailua. This was the PERFECT beach place for going back & forth to the beach! The hot tub was a bonus amenity which we used lots! Thanks for the welcoming chocolates & water, too! We LOVED our time here & want to return!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this house. It was great to have the beach just a walk away. We only stayed a week but it felt that we had been there for a lot longer. Hiring a car is a must as it is a long walk to the shops and restaurants. Although old, the owner has been busy putting in ceiling fans and improving the overall interior. It still needs more work done but this did not detract at all from us enjoying our stay. The beach is beautiful with soft white sand and fairly quiet.

Enjoyed every moment of our stay here! Because it was so perfect, we didn’t bother venturing to other beaches we’ve enjoyed over the years (having lived in Kailua prior and visiting multiple times). Only gave 4 stars for ‘cleanliness’ due to natural wear of a beachfront/plantation-style home. There was nothing overtly ‘unclean’ about this home. Guests must recognize this is truly an original beachfront home - not an over-the-top multimillion dollar place. The fans provided were sufficient with the constant trade winds blowing throughout the day/night. Misty was readily available and I wouldn’t have hesitated to ask for another fan if we needed one. Certainly give yourself 24 hours to acclimate to the temperature before the request.
This is an original plantation-style home set in a beautifully perfect location. It met and exceeded our expectations. We loved it.
Our hope is that this home is preserved for years to come. We hope to return in the future!

Relaxing Couples Getaway
For a week, we lived like the locals in the incredible community of Kailua. The beach is expansive and beautiful and was never crowded. The cottage is true Hawaiian plantation style and very comfy. If you are looking for luxury and Hawaiian glitz, this is not the trip for you. But if you want to enjoy a secluded, chill-out, and truly Hawaiian holiday, in a tidy, historical home with white sands and turquoise water steps outside your yard, this is your spot. Many thanks to our host, Misty, who was always promptly responsive.

Can't beat it!
Out the gate I will make it known....this property does NOT have AC. It is in the listing so we knew that going in but just to put it out there for people. Besides that this place is absolutely amazing...i go to Hawaii ever 6 months for work and this place is my favorite i have stayed. It is right on the beach, has a hot tub, has that real deal Hawaii charm to it, misty the manager is great and responsive, it is on the best part of the island (in my opinion), has a AMAZING and big yard you can walk around barefoot on. Just really cant say enough good things about this property. This house is what going to Hawaii is all about. Hope to stay there again in 6 months

Beautiful Location perfectly situated on Kailua Beach!
When we first arrived the manager made arrangements for an early check in and this was much appreciated. We walked the grounds and the view of the ocean was even better than the pictures. We did notice immediately since we were in the low 90s with low wind that there was no A/C in the cottage. I didn't recall that being mentioned in the listing. It just made it a challenge to adjust to initially, but they did have 5 portable fans in the home to help cool things off while sleeping. Being in the tropics- bugs happen and roaches are among them -there was definitely a presence of them each night -we notified the property manager and they had pest control address it immediately. Unfortunately on this island I think it's a losing battle without using strong chemicals that would most likely be dangerous to humans and the environment. We would not recommend that - So we just tried to keep open containers and things we ate in the fridge to not encourage their return. Our yard seemed a little on the crispy side compared to the yard next door -not sure why since the sprinklers were going each morning. I did notice the neighbors ran theirs again in the middle of the day so maybe that helped keep it green. The Grill may need to be replaced soon since the handle was about to come loose, but again we managed. This was the extent of the negative for this property. The positives were far better and out weighing the negative for my family of 5- The 50 yard walk to sand on the beach was a great location. The beach is a fantastic place and busy but never too crowded from sun up to sun down. The Cottage was quaint and had most everything we needed - the luxuries like a working stereo or an A/C we could do without anyway. We never used the TV itself (because we are on a beach) It did have a hot tub which was surprisingly used toward the evening when the breeze would occasionally kick up. The cottage came with some beach toys and chairs as well as cooler that was helpful on several outings. The town has several grocery stores within 5 min of the cottage. Likewise Surfboard and other water sports are literally 2 minutes down the street. Management was great to communicate with and very helpful throughout the stay. Anything we communicated was responded to within a proper time. We enjoyed this property and would recommend this to others as well knowing both the positive and negative characteristics of the property. Thanks for such a great stay!

A peaceful oasis.
I fully enjoyed my stay at this quiet and peaceful beachfront property. I loved the shabby chic surf style of the house, a little dated in parts, but charming just the same. Mostly I love how relaxing I felt while staying there. Opening the windows would let in the right amount of breeze. And when I went to the yard, I was a short distance from the beach. The property manager was very kind and accommodating. I truly felt like I was on vacation away from the rest of the world and would stay again in a heartbeat.

Great location and home in Kailua
This VRBO rental was perfect for us. It was clean, near the beach, and perfect size for our family of five. We relaxed in the hot tub, enjoyed beach time with family and the trade winds to cool down the home in the afternoon made it perfect place for us to stay. The owner was great to work with and extended great Aloha to our family too. We would highly recommend this home as a VRBO to be near the beach and near the downtown of Kailua too.

Rundown, dirty and HOT
Rundown: The pictures for this property must have been taken years ago because this house doesn’t look anything like them. It’s completely run down, the couch is broken and leans to one side. The furniture is dirty (like don’t want to sit on it dirty) and old.
Dirty: We couldn’t check in early because the cleaners were there but......the cabinets knobs were so gross and sticky with dirt that I wrapped them with papertowels and they stuck there the entire stay. The counter tops had not been scrubbed for I don’t know how long and every dish and utensil was crusty with food. And after finding a DEAD gecko BETWEEN the sheets, I lost all my patience, went to the store and purchased cleaning supplies. I cleaned for two hours so that I could enjoy the rest of my vacation without being in complete disgust.
But the heat - No AC so nothing we could do about that. It was stifling and the screens don’t fit the house properly so the mosquitos got in and ate me alive at night. I literally have 30+ bites.
Location: The best I could find on VRBO for sure.
Misty: very responsive, accomodating
Internet: never got it to work
I wish I could upload pictures of the dirt and disrepair. I even have one of the dead gecko. Just awful. Makes my stomach sick when I think about how much we paid to stay here.
Note to VRBO - At the top of the review form, it asks if I enjoyed my stay, ‘I loved it’ is selected and can’t be changed to the other option of ‘Not really’. SMH

Such a cute Hawaiian house on the beach with a gorgeous backyard!
This Hawaiian home is so adorable! It’s not fancy so if that’s what you are looking for, you won’t like it, but the backyard is amazing as this home is on the beach. I didn’t want to write anything negative about this place because it’s awesome, but it was soooo hot when we were there and the home has no air conditioning. Most places our friends stayed at also did not have air so I guess that’s a thing, but prepare yourself. We were there in August and it was so hot. The bedroom that faces the ocean gets a great breeze, but the other rooms are so hot! We had fans, but they were no match for the heat. Regardless, we all loved it. We stayed here with three couples and had such an awesome time. I would love to stay here again, but would love to see maybe some mini air conditioners In at least those two bedrooms or i guess the whole house. We used the bbq and the spa and both worked great. We did see a coach roach that ran into the house, but we expected that in the islands and made sure to throw out garbage and have all food closed and we didn’t have a problem. I only told you about the air because I didn’t even think about whether a place would have air or not. Needless to say, we loved the house. I could have stayed here forever. The town of Kailua is very quiet and it’s a tranquil place not like Honolulu at all.

Location, Location, Location
This cute beach side cottage is in a perfect location. Nice backyard that stretches right out to Kailua Beach. Watching the morning sunrises was a treat! The cottage itself was fine but could use some updating - suggest removing carpet from the bedrooms and replacing all with linoleum or something else comparable and using a throw rug here and there. Typical tropical pests (occasional cockroach and some termites) showed up, but overall, it was manageable. Misty was easily accessible in case we had any questions and she was very accommodating and helpful. Would rate this on average a 3.5 star property with a 5 star location for sure (so a 4 star overall average rating)

Great place!
We live here in Hawaii and wanted a great place to meet up with some friends from Idaho. This house was perfect! 3 private bedrooms, all with queen beds. Very clean. Except for the sound of the waves, very quiet. Private, no one bothers you, yet management is very accessible if needed. Misty is great and very accommodating. Ocean and beach are steps from the lanai. Would rent again and recommend to friends. Really can't think of anything negative at all. It was a great weekend!!

We had a wonderful time! This is our 6th time staying at this cute cottage.
A few improvements were made, which was great! It's always so peaceful there
and is the perfect location,,, just a few steps to the beach.

Great location!
The location of the house is great, on one of the most beautiful beaches! The beds were comfortable and even though we didn't cook in the house, it was nice having a kitchen to make lunches and breakfast.

not enjoyable
We did not enjoy our stay and in fact, changed our flights and went home 3 days early. There was no AC, which we knew, but the fans hardly worked or made a loud/annoying sound so therefore we were hot. We did not feel safe enough to leave our children's windows open at night due to the beach path inches from the house with many frequented strangers walking by at all hours. Add to that the homeless man in the backyard bushes tripping on drugs (I get that it's on the beach and unavoidable), but all led to the fact that the windows don't lock and we didn't want to leave them open at night anyway with kids. This home was unsafe in our opinion and should get the windows replaced with locks.
There were dozens of dead and alive cockroaches inside the house. When we arrived, we disposed of about 6 dead cockroaches and moved on realizing we were in the tropics, but as the days progressed, it got disgusting. One huge cockroach flew at my face when I opened the kitchen cabinet. On our 2nd day there (we only stayed 2.5 days although had booked it for 6 nights), one of the bedrooms smelled like a dead animal. Probably a rat as there are rat traps all around the inside and outside of the house. If you have a toddler, it is not safe with the traps. There were tons of ants in the bathrooms, showers, kitchen at all times. The pots and pans are horrible and not even worth it trying to cook anything. The knives were also horrible and I struggled to even cut a mango. Again, not worth it to try to use the kitchen beyond the refrigerator and dishes.
Although we regret booking this home and did not have a good experience, the location is fantastic and the beach was beautiful. There needs to be many safety updates as well as fan and kitchen supply updates. Not worth it to book a trip to Hawaii and then want to go home early :(

Leave busy Honolulu behind and travel to lush and low key East Oahu for your island vacation. My wife and I along with our son and daughter-in-law just completed a wonderful two week stay at the plantation cottage on Kailua Beach. If you are looking for a luxurious vacation home, this is not the place for you. Instead, if you want to experience old Hawaiian charm, stay in the plantation cottage. It could use major updating and had some maintenance issues, but it was clean and comfortable. Because of its condition, I cannot give it a full five star rating. Misty welcomed us with a wonderful basket of Hawaiian treats and was always responsive to our concerns.
Just walk down the lawn to one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Almost every morning we enjoyed a sunrise walk up the beach to Kalapawai Market for coffee. After exploring the area, we swam in front of the cottage and then relaxed in the hot tub. Don't miss snorkeling at Hanauma Bay. If you arrive between 6-7 AM, there is no parking and entry fee, and you avoid the crowds. We enjoyed stopping at Byodo-In Temple followed by a hike up to Hamama Falls. Another special day was spent taking an outrigger excursion to the Mokuluas (Kailuaoceanadventures.com or alohacanoeadventures.com). The Chief's Luau is also a fun experience. The food is nothing special, but the show is spectacular. There are so many spectacular places to experience, but you will always look forward to returning to your peaceful cottage.
You will definitely enjoy vacationing at this property. It's location, location, location!! Along with being right on the beach, you are close to town for shopping and dining. Although Uahi Island Grill, Buzz's, Grylt, El Mariachi (in Kanaeohe), and Cinnamon's were some of our favorite restaurants, our best dining experiences were the meals prepared at the cottage and enjoyed on the back deck.
We hope to return soon to paradise.

We really enjoyed this house! our party rented this house and a larger house next door in Feb 2014. We were 5 people in their 40s, 3 people in their 70s and 2 kids ages 9 and 11. Everyone had a great time. This cottage in particular was clean and adequate - not luxurious but that's not what we were after. The location on the beach was great - a short walk to Lanakai. Going into town you could walk or ride a your bike - it's about 2 miles. We usually drove though. The town is not touristy - great local restaurants, supermarkets, etc. The house had a nice assortment of beach toys for the kids - boogie boards, etc. There was a small hot tub next to the house that accommodated 4 or so adults. We would all get up around 7 with the sun and jump in the surf - waves are small and great for smaller kids that know how to swim. The lawn strectched about 150 feet from the house right to the sand. The house manager; Tonic, was great, very nice and responsive. We were in Lahaina a few months ago and much preferred our stay here. We will definitely be returning!

The house itself is wonderful and quaint. We loved hearing the ocean and being able to walk out the back door to the beach. Unfortunately, the next door neighbor had a loud barking dog that barked non stop from 8-10 am and then most of the day. We tried everything to resolve this issue and ended up spending most of our time trying to get some peace and quiet. Apparently this is new as the neighbor explained that he used to work from home so the dog was not alone. Now that he works 8-5 M-F the dog is alone all day and barks. I certainly hope someone figures out a solution or other renters who have planned and saved for months to be on a beach vacation are going to be just as disappointed as we were. So much for our 1 week off this year in Hawaii.
5.0
This small cottage is just what we had looked for. It is one of the older cottages in the area, but has that Hawaii charm of the past. It is very clean and well kept. Every thing you need for an extended stay. My wife and I with my daughter, son and his wife, and 4 year old grandson stayed here for 2 wonderful weeks. A 200 foot walk in your own back yard and you are on the beach. This beach is good for children. Take coffee to the beach and watch the sun rise each morning. Or walk up the beach and buy coffee and watch the sun come up. A 6 block walk will get you to downtown Kailua with good shops and good places to eat. Our host/manager was superb. She is a lovely person and will help you with anything you need.
As for theft (anywhere), be smart, put valuables out of sight, close up and lock up, all the guide books cover it, there is a safe there for your use.
I will keep this cottage and beach and host at the top of my list for a return vacation.
1.0
This was a great place to stay and I agree with all of the great stuff the other review stated, its on the beach, plenty of space, clean, etc.... but yesterday we did not realize how vunerable we were until thieves hit! The house IS NOT secure and we were not warned at all! the thieves broke into a bathroom window very easily and stole our valuable electronics.... I would not recommend staying here unless the owner installs better locks and or a security system! In addition, we feel the owner should at least warn the guests that this is a neighborhood that has been targeted recently and the police told us that there have been many break-ins! Stay here at your own risk or leave your valuables at home!!!

When we saw this beach house had no reviews we felt we had to write one. My husband and I stayed there with my older son and his friend two years ago for 2 weeks. We adored it! Not only did it have everything we felt we needed, but it was so comfy and welcoming. It is the ideal "beach house"! It is a short walk across their lawn out to the beach, or you can sit on your deck while looking out at the ocean. Our favorite was waking early to the sunrise, drinking our coffee on the beach, then taking our walk on the beach to the local coffee shop meeting fun, warm people. There are local eating establishments for all appetites, cocktail lounges, shopping, rentals for all recreational equipment close by. It is windy and a haven for kite surfers!!!. Bigger town events are just a short drive away to Honolulu, the famous surf spot named The Pipeline, The Polynesian Cultural Center, and hot snorkeling places. We loved the place and will return.
