A Beautiful Log Cabin In The Woods, On Pontoosuc Lake, Yet Near Everything

John has created an idyllic, lakeside retreat. The cabin has such a cozy, comfy feel and the family memorabilia makes it even more so. He really thinks of everything with some welcoming touches that create an inviting environment from the moment you step inside. This cabin truly has everything you could need or want to enjoy a peaceful, serene stay. I even found my most favorite childhood read, "The Secret Garden" nestled upon the bookshelves! We enjoyed canoeing, grilling and a nice pondside barbecue and fire. The only thing that could have been better, from the guys' point of view would have been the secret to catching the elusive carp in the lake. Thank you, John for sharing your piece of paradise with us...we can't wait to return!

What a tranquil, relaxing getaway on a beautiful lake surrounded by nature! Enjoy the hand-crafted canoe, evenings by the fire pit, and lots of hiking in the area.

This is a well loved family property and evidence of their enjoyment of it surrounds you. The location is lovely and we spent mornings and afternoons sitting by the water or kayaking and exploring the wetlands. If you love nature then this is the spot for you. We saw bald eagles, osprey, kingfishers, a least bittern, herons and a common egret.

This space is very special. It offers everything you might need to refuel. Two in our party just sat and looked at the water and wildlife the entire time. Two of us took advantage of the close hiking trail and kayaks. A bald eagle landed on an islet about 50 feet out in the water and just hung there for an hour. After about 20 minutes, I whispered “this is the best thing that has ever happened to us” and everyone just nodded.
I want to put future visitors minds at ease about previous comments on the space. John has switched which room is the bedroom and which is the sitting room- so the bathroom is now off the tv/sitting room. No awkward walking past someone sleeping for nighttime ablutions. And he has figured out a very effective cooling system that involves a window AC unit and a series of fans. There was no issue at all with the cabin being hot- even in the loft where two of us slept.
We booked ourselves for a week in 2025 for our next girls trip!

Visited with my family of 5 for a last minute vacation. The cabin was charming, clean, and well stocked and John is a fantastic and welcoming host. We loved kayaking on the lake and enjoying coffee on the porch. Absolutely recommend!

We have been coming here nearly every year for 7 years and are always happy every time. It’s just great in every way-l the good reviews and photos are true. It’s the perfect combination of nature and a cosy house. We’ve gushed before the peace and the nature before so this time I want to salute the continued improvement and attention to detail. John is the perfect host and his place is a labor of love to make it slightly better for his guests every year. Everything works and there are many areas to sit, each different and delightful. See you next year john!

This cabin and property is beautiful, clean, fully stocked, and very well maintained. We stayed there during a hot July week but the cabin was always cool and comfortable. The bedroom is air conditioned and the fans circulated the air, maintaining a pleasant temperature. The host was always available to answer any questions or concerns. We would gladly stay here again and recommend it to others.

We love coming to America House each summer to unplug and reconnect with nature. Watching humming birds and chipmunks going busily about their day out the massive windows as we lazily sip our morning coffee in the front room and then wandering down to lake to sit some more in the big Adirondack chairs and watch the dragon flies or take the canoe out to visit the great blue heron…these are some of the joys of this very special place John is the perfect host—always attentive without ever becoming obtrusive. He thinks of everything!

John was helpful and kind. I would definitely rent his cabin again. It's clean and comfortable. The grounds are beautiful with several seating areas and a grill by the water. Kayaking was perfect, the adjacent lake is clean and great for swimming. And, of course, The Berkshires are a wonderful playground for cultural activities, hiking and biking.

We wanted a short getaway where we could relax in an active way! We fished, kayaked, hiked and mini-golfed and still had plenty of time for board games and reading. Thank you John for sharing your little slice of heaven with us!

We had lovely stay between Christmas and New Years. The cabin was decorated for the holidays, including personalized Christmas stockings for my three children filled with gifts. My kids are already asking when they can go back! The cabin is set back off the road leaving it very quiet, peaceful and secluded. John was very accommodating and the cabin is equipped with everything you could need for an enjoyable stay!

We enjoyed our stay and found the home to be very welcoming with lots of amenities. The home was clean and the kitchen was well stocked to meet our cooking needs. We enjoyed sitting by the fireplace on the cold and rainy days. We would have used more of the outside amenities if the weather was better. We would definitely go back there.

My family and I had an amazing time for a nice weekend getaway at John’s cabin. The cabin was beautiful and very welcoming. There was everything you would need to have a comfortable stay. The lake side amenities made they stay even better. Spent the two days down by and on the water making family memories.

Although we planned to stay here to hike the AT and paddle, we ended up also biking on the local rail trail. The place was perfectly located. The nearby restaurants were great (Zucchini's & Proprietors). It was so relaxing by the water! The wild life was great, especially the bobcat. The kitchen was fully stocked and lots of extras. Great place to stay!

We love visiting America House each summer. It's a beautiful and peaceful spot to reconnect with quiet and family and nature. We see beaver dams (and beavers) when we kayak in the lake, great blue herons, birds of all kinds and even some baby bunny rabbits at the head of the trail up to the house. We also love to grill and watch movies by the lake. It's an idyllic spot and has something for all of us to enjoy with our varied interests. John is wonderful and helpful and hospitable. This place is really one of our favorite places on the planet...which I probably shouldn't tell you because once the secret is out we'll never be able to get a booking for next year!

We just had a three night stay at this hidden gem. The house is absolutely adorable, well appointed, and welcoming. John the home owner, provided a plethora of information about the area. We travelled with our two boys (13 and 16) and a family friend, also 16. The property has plenty of indoor and outdoor space for everyone to find a relaxing place to settle in. None of us wanted to leave! We will certainly return, as soon as we possibly can! Thanks for this much needed vacation!!!

Excellent location with hiking/biking options as well as restaurants close by!
The outside space on a quiet section of lake was very nice! There was plenty of seating & hammocks, firepit and dining area. We spent most of our time there. The 3 kayaks and a canoe were fun too.
John Allen was responsive. The check in & out process was easy.
The house was clean and well stocked.
The only cons were: the only bathroom is IN the owner suite which required our friends to walk past our bed at night. And
no AC (in humid July sleeping was difficult, especiallyin the loft).

This house had everything we could need, and more, while on our Girl Scout adventure. It was clean, comfortable and FULLY equipped with games and movies, paddling/floating gear, outdoor cooking equipment and a great firepit for hanging out. Just up the road from the state park, just a paddle away from the main lake and within 45 minutes of ziplining, white water rafting and other adventures. Cozy like home. We had a wonderful time.

Great place for a family get-away. So relaxing but plenty to do. Really feels like a friend is letting us use their own home. We've stayed three times and will try to come back often.

We loved our stay! Great, cozy, well maintained, cabin with lots of privacy. Our kids loved sleeping in the loft and had a blast playing into the shallow water by the dock.

We had a great time staying here. John was very accommodating and made sure we had everything we needed. The house was clean, the property was private, and the scenery was beautiful. I accidentally left my laptop and bag behind and John graciously offered to send it back UPS and had it in the mail immediately.
We would definitely stay here again.

Lovely small cabin on a quiet portion of Lake Pontoonsuc. Our adult family spent time here and enjoyed the lake activities and fire pit. The cabin is set back from the road but in a residential area. We met John on a few occasions (re: garbage pickup and a little issue with the internet we were unaware of) and host was cordial and welcoming. The only recommendation I would suggest is to have curtains or shades in the top of the very large windows in bathroom. (The photo in listing shows shades in top bathroom windows. ) The one bath in master bedroom is a little drawback if not renting with family. Cabin is well stocked and cozy with a large wood stove and pellet stove. We would recommend this to others looking for fun on quiet portion of lake but still close to residential area and shopping/restaurants nearby.

Most times you rent a place looking for a home base for day trips etc. while that is certainly possible here this place is able to be a getaway in and of itself. With kayaks, canoes, outdoor screen to watch movies, outdoor tent, fire pit, lawn (and board) games, multiple hammocks and a wonderful hang out area near fire pit. It’s restful in and of itself.
Site is located in a more secluded area of lake too so you feel like you have your own space, and get to watch wonderful wildlife up close. Our group included by two sons (under 10), husband, my mother (who is senior and appreciated the accessibility of the master bedroom, first floor living space and bathroom). Recommendation would be to install a grab rail to help with getting into and out of the tub (for those who might need it). Was a little disappointed that the outdoor gazebo wasn’t screened in like it had mentioned in the listing. But overall wonderful listing would recommend and hope to go back. Also, should be aware no ac but ceiling fans, other fans and air circulation was decent most of the time.
One of the loft beds is a little close to the slanted ceiling when getting out of bed headspace wise but our two sons slept in that bed so was fine. Truly enjoyed our stay, would recommend to others and hope to come back! John and his wife were great hosts and loved all the personal touches in the home. (Boys said was the best place we have stayed in :) )

When you stay here, it’s like you rented two properties - a quaint log cabin with everything you need, and a beautiful outdoor space - also with everything you need! A pretty short path (with lighting) takes you from the house to the lakeside, where there is an outdoor kitchen, fire pit, gorgeous large tent with huge top-quality air mattresses and its own gas fire pit with adirondak chairs, and multiple seating/dining options. Even more, there is the movie screen and projector, and three hammocks.
The section of lake is quiet, and attracts so much wildlife! We saw blue heron, many ducks, turtles, fish jumping, bald eagles, and much more!
The host John clearly loves this place, and it is evident everywhere you look…humming bird feeders, sculptures, there is always something happy and interesting to discover. John was extremely helpful, as well. I highly recommend this hidden gem!

John has a great home and our family had a blast. The kids made good use of the kayaks, the fire pit for smores and the outdoor movie set up. The house is very close to an ice cream spot with a great field of playsets. We visited it more than once during our stay. Overall, this house is a great spot for a family getaway.

We had such a lovely time here as a family. The house is great, spotless and has absolutely everything you could possibly ever need. The kitchen is really well stocked with more than just essentials. The location is just amazing. We used the canoe and the kayaks to paddle to an island in the big lake to go swimming. Idyllic! And if you plan to do a bit of work or have teenagers, the wifi is super fast! John was so helpful - he answered all our queries quickly

Our stay was peaceful and beautiful. If you are trying to get away and unplug it is perfect right on the water. Service was spotty and TV didn't really work but the view and activities local were pleasant. Owner was very nice and respectful to our needs. Would come again.

Home away from home.
We were so pleased with the homey atmosphere of the cabin. Our family enjoyed all the amenities on the lake too! The privacy of the location of the cabin on the lake was perfect. We are grateful for John’s flexibility with our stay and accommodating to our needs. We would definitely recommend this place!
