We recently stayed over the long weekend. Our family group included multigenerational members from college age to two year old. The house has a perfect set-up for small children (lots of toys and books) The game room is a perfect set up for large family gathering and game nights. Everything was labeled in the kitchen and had many different appliances for ease of cooking.
The host, Rita, was thoughtful in providing welcome goodies and was very quick to respond to any question we had. The only aspect that proved to be difficult was the “walk” down to the water. Once we realized you could drive a car down the side road, it made it more convenient. The kayaks and tubes were a big hit, unfortunately you could not rent a boat at that location. It is a beautiful home and we had a wonderful weekend.

Wow! I'm not sure where to begin. This property is stunning and the house is immaculate. The owner has thought of everything! The pictures do not do the house or the view justice in the slightest. We had a blast down by the water during the day floating, paddling, and playing volleyball. Would stay here again without hesitation!

This house was perfect!! We had 3 families including 6 kids and we all had a great time here. It is a trek down to the lake, very steep road, but you can drive people and stuff down and back if needed. The floating dock was a favorite for the kids and we all enjoyed the kayaks and SUP’s. The fire pit was fun for a night and the views were outstanding. The hosts have this house very well stocked with many things, which is great since it is a bit of a treck down a gravel road to get to any stores. I would definitely stay here again and for as many nights as possible, just loved it!

Our family of 14 stayed here for 4 nights. The house was even better than advertised! Rita the homeowner was outstanding at hosting and communicating. We had plenty of beds, bathrooms, living area, things to do, etc. Water was hot and the AC cold. Beautiful front porch and back decks. Two fire pits with firewood provided. The large home overlooks a lakefront lot with a boat dock, beach volleyball, kayaking, swimming, etc. While you can walk to the lakefront lot, we usually drove 2 cars down so my parents, yard games, coolers, etc. had a ride. We would definitely come back!

Description of property is accurate. Our family of 16. 10 kids ages 4-17. I say this because our week was a total rain out for 5 days! Yet, everyone found space and activities throughout the house to still have fun and relaxation. This location is remote and private. That can be good and bad depending on your prep. No restaurants in the area or grocery stores nearby. Kitchen is indeed fully equipped, and gas grill is excellent. Refrigeration and freezer space is plentiful. We cooked all meals indoors and out. Bring alcoholic beverages for your length of stay. While there we had a few questions for the owners, and they were responded immediately to our needs. In total after discussing our stay at our last dinner, all age groups gave the week the big thumbs up! PS: Highly recommend a 4-wheel drive vehicle (or 2!) Steep drop from cabin to lake.

My family and I spent this past week at this vaca home. House was gorgeous. Property was stunningly beautiful. Only issue we noticed, the pictures online don’t show how far the dock and lake are from the house. Luckily you can drive your to and from the dock which make it easy for us. There is not
much to do in the area. So if your looking for a true getaway from the craziness of life this is def the place to go.

Beautiful lake view
Our stay at Sarah’s house was a memorable one. The house is large enough for our families with extra beds which we never got to use and we are 13 people total. We really enjoyed the views, kayaking on the lake, making s’mores in the open open fire pit( they provide stuff to make s’mores) and our kids playing pool, foosball and hockey which are all in the basement where most of the kids are sleeping. The kitchen is fully stocked and well organized, which I really love.
One thing that could have been improved would be installing more lights in the main room, it was a little too dark for us. But over all, it was a great and awesome stay. We really enjoyed it. Highly recommend!

Well Appointed Cabin with Stunning Views

Peaceful surroundings, gracious host, outstanding accommodations.
Had a wonderful vacation with children and grandchildren (one even born during our stay!) House sits atop a bluff, so exercise was gained in the trek down to the boathouse and back. My 4WD vehicle came in very handy transporting those who where daunted by the climb back to the house (like the expectant mother). The property was in impeccable condition. The area experienced a 26-hour power outage due to a wind storm on our 2nd day, but the whole-generator kicked in and never stopped for the entire duration of the event. The host has really thought of everything.

The best place my family has ever rented!
My family and I spent a wonderful week at Avonlea Cottage and had a marvelous experience. Sarah was an excellent host and her home is the best we’ve ever rented (and we’ve been renting summer vacation homes for at least 10 years)! The Avonlea has breath-taking view of the Claytor Lake, extremely clean and has EVERYTHING you will ever need. I read all the reviews before choosing a summer place and completely agree with all the compliments on the house itself and of Sarah! We are already planning on returning next year! Very impressed with cleanliness, and how many extras were included, paper products, snacks, soaps and boating equipment especially. Would recommend explaining more about how steep the hill to the lake is and possibly adding railings, especially from house to the road at least. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay

Wonderful Family Reunion!
Easily supported 15 people. House was wonderfully equipped with everything we needed. View of the lake was fabulous, although the hike down to the lake was too much for the 87-year old matriarch. The children had a blast swimming, fishing, and making (and eating) s'mores! The adults enjoyed visiting in comfortable rockers on the various decks. Kudos to Sarah!

The perfect wedding and honeymoon
Where do I even start? My husband and I keep describing our time at the Avonlea as "perfect", but that doesn't even begin to cover it! Due to Covid and wanting to have a small, intimate wedding, I reached out to Sarah about the possibility of getting married at the Avonlea. She responded within a day that they'd be delighted to be our venue and gave me a detailed breakdown of the costs involved for what we wanted. After COVID restrictions got even tighter and we were concerned about traveling for our honeymoon, we decided to extend our stay and have our honeymoon at the Avonlea as well, and we could not have made a better decision! The property was absolutely beyond spotless inside and immaculately manicured outside. Sarah was friendly, sweet, and responsive through our whole planning process and stay, and helped make sure all our stress melted away as soon as we arrived. They even left us some wonderful goodies and gifts upon our arrival! We had the most beautiful wedding and relaxing honeymoon at the Avonlea, and could not have been happier with our stay.

Avonlea Cottage has everything you could need, want and imagine! The cottage is appointed beyond our expectations. Beds, furniture, everything extremely comfortable. Fabulous!
A group of family and friends stayed here over a long weekend to celebrate our daughter's graduation from Radford University. The place is wonderful and absolutely perfect for what we needed. It has all the comforts of home with extra touches that make it so, so special. The drive in is a bit remote, but once you're at the property, there's no need to leave! Sarah was very helpful and patient with our stay as we had to adjust it multiple times due to rescheduling of graduation because of Covid. She was easy to work with a kept in touch with us to make sure we didn't have any issues during our stay.
I cannot express enough what a great time we had and how special the house and property are. We hope to return sometime in the future to enjoy it for a full week of fun!

We visited Avonlea Cottage with our family and some family friends and our group had a great time. This is one of the cleanest houses we’ve ever rented, and we’ve rented many! The house is also extremely well stocked with amenities, including pantry items, kitchen gadgets, cleaning products and other supplies. The owners have obviously put a lot of thought into how to make guests feel at home. If you’re considering a visit to this area, you would be hard pressed to find a better rental property. The Avonlea Cottage was an absolutely perfect venue to spend our Thanksgiving holiday!
There were 18 of us (ranging in ages from 8 to 82) and the cottage was plenty spacious for our large group! Sarah, the owner couldn’t have been more accommodating and responsive with questions, etc. The home offered not only all the amenities you could think of but plenty of fun options to keep the kids busy! The home is located in such a gorgeous setting with the beautiful lake view. We spent most evenings hanging out at the incredible fire pit and just enjoyed soaking up time with family and friends. Would love to go back and absolutely recommend this location to anyone!

Wonderful retreat
We had a fantastic stay at Avonlea Cottage. My boyfriend and I went for his birthday weekend to get away and relax. The cottage is warm, inviting and all the little details (snack baskets etc,) go a long way to making you feel at home. We loved how private and peaceful the location was. Sarah was very responsive throughout. We had such fun roasting marshmallows by the fire pit, playing pool, air hockey and all the other fun games downstairs. We got really lucky with the weather and took a kayak out on the lake during our stay. I would highly recommend this property.
