A propos de ce maisonrental
Mampoo Hill-- a Beachfront House 20 Yards from the Ocean with optional Jeep

Clean, beautiful view, private and very relaxing. Not far from Cruz bay. Easy to find.

This beautiful home exceeded our expectations. Awesome open concept home with a private, air conditioned bedroom on both sides of the common areas. Beautiful views and only a few steps from the shore. Clean, well stocked and maintained. 5 stars! Local support staff was awesome and available to address any issues. Highly recommended.

Mampoo Hill will go down as one of—if not THE—most extraordinary vacation properties we’ve ever experienced. The house is fun and well maintained, but words don’t do the scene, view, privacy, and lusciousness of the property justice. All the caveats shared by other reviewers are accurate—there are an abundance of no see ems, island life is unpredictable (power outages were a thing during our stay), etc—and this isn’t a “luxury” property in terms of sheer creature comforts, so go in with your eyes open. But we loved it and would definitely stay again! The owner and caretakers are fab, the jeep was great, and we are feeling very lucky to have spent 9 days in this special place.

When we travel, we prefer to find places more "away" from the crowds and high-rises. This VRBO at Mampoo Place delivers. The sounds of the ocean, the views all day (and even sometimes at night!) The seashells, iguanas, hermit crabs, and marine life were all fantastic. I was nervous about the iguanas "visiting" but they stayed in their tree and were delightful entertainment.
We stayed as a last family vacation with all of our 4 children still "in the nest" and my mama heart stuffed a million memories in with so many smiles!
The mosquitoes are nothing to mess with here! They were violent little suckers (and I was born and raised in MN lakes country where they get to be the size of small birds!) Moral of the story; USE THE JUNGLE JUICE.
We also had issues with sugar ants, but with an open-air concept like Mampoo Hill, it would be silly to complain, I just think a warning is due that if you don't want to share your snacks with critters of all sizes, shapes, and forms, then you should keep all opened foods in airtight containers, the fridge, or freezer and do your dishes promptly after eating. Taking out the trash daily is doubly recommended for the same reasons (we never left garbage to find out, but I wholeheartedly believe ANYTHING left out could bring in uninvited guests!)
The people, the history, the water, and EVERYTHING about this island is magical. I have NEVER had my stress melt away like our two weeks here and I pray we can make it back again.

Our stay was amazing. When you walk in it’s open and has many chairs and sitting areas to check out the beach. Beach was beautiful, it is a rocky one so I recommend bringing good shoes in your bags. They provided us with everything included snorkeling gear. The bugs are definitely present, but they were kind enough to provide us with a great bug repellent, make sure to lather up. The iguanas were great company and fun to watch. Everything was so easy to get to, I definitely recommend you renting their jeep, it made the trip so much more convenient and much less pricey than renting at the airport. Everyone I talked to was responsive very quickly and accommodating. The people in general all around were just so kind.

This house was amazing. Anyone looking for a true island experience---this is it. If we were to return to St. John, it would be based on the availability of Mampoo hill. Craig was so nice and helpful. Meeting us at the ferry is a definite plus. Loved it.
4.9
The house, which is old St. John in all the best ways, is also completely updated with comfy living room furniture, the best beds and a kitchen that literally has everything you need and then some. We love the outdoor shower and the hot tub. This is our fourth stay at Mampoo Hill and the welcome home we fet from everyone is truly a joy. Kaspers Jeep is the best deal on the island and gets us everywhere we want to go. So many people mention the mosquitos, which are admittedly annoying around sunset. But, judicious use of repellent works for us. Besides, its the tropics and bugs are part of the ecosystem. Thank you, Candy and Bill, for naking your home available so that, when we come home to STJ, we're really at home!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Mampoo Hill. The outdoor living space was perfect. Everything was exactly as described. The photos do not do it justice. The house was well-stocked, communication was great. The only thing to mention is that there aren't curtains on the bedroom windows, so it gets bright very early. By 6:30ish we were up because of the sunlight. So if you like to sleep in or take naps, then bring a sleep mask. But in saying that, we'd come back in a heartbeat!

The property is amazing! The views are outstanding with sunrise and sunset plus the birds and iguana. We can’t wait to be back!

The property is right on a rocky/shell beach and excellent snorkeling is 200 yards away. The views are world class. The soothing sounds of the Caribbean are ever present. The home is an architectural wonder and blends into the beautiful Mampoo Hill. Depending on your mood, you could spend all your time at the house or drive 10 minutes to enjoy the great restaurants and bars in Cruz Bay. All of the wonderful sights and beaches on St. John are within 20-30 minutes. Great Place!!!

Mampoo Hill is a slice of heaven. Upon arriving and walking into the Carribean style open air home we immediately were mesmerized by the breathtaking ocean views. The air moved through the spaces with the breeze and sun radiated the two decks in the late afternoon. The living room and kitchen spaces are open air but each bedroom is private and comfortably appointed. We loved all the artwork by the owner displayed throughout.
We woke early each morning to the sounds of the waves caressing the stoney beach, enjoyed breakfast on the deck and finished each evening under the stars in the hot tub. There could not have been a more peaceful way to start and finish each day. We made sure to make it back for late afternoon sunsets with a glass of champs to finish off a beautiful beaching, hiking, paddle boarding and snorkeling excursion. We even spent a couple days doing nothing at all but relaxing in place, fishing from the rocks and exercising on the beach. It was just perfect.
We did need to be proactive and keep the bedroom door closed at all times to avoid any bugs from entering. We kept the ceiling fans circulating for constant air flow and minimize moving mosquitoes, it worked perfect.
The added value of the jeep rental from the owners was appreciated. The wash/dryer was a plus. The home was well stocked in the kitchen, with plenty of towels and linens.
A bonus for us was an in villa couples massage. The set up was perfect, with the sun setting and the breeze coming through the living room while the therapists worked in each of us!! To say the least, we enjoyed every aspect! We are looking to rebook for next year… already

This was the PERFECT place for our group of 2 couples. Well-designed for island time with two split bedrooms and an open air kitchen & common space. Amazing views of Little St. James & St. Thomas. Short drive to Cruz Bay. Well-stocked kitchen with great selection of cookware. Owners also provide plenty of equipment for beach activities!
Pro Tip #1: Pour a glass of your favorite beverage & enjoy a front row seat to the breathtaking sunset every evening.
Pro Tip #2: Keep your windows open to breathe in the ocean air as the breaking waves lull you to sleep.
Unexpected highlights: Iguanas & crabs are plentiful. So fun to watch!

We have a great week at Mampoo Hill. The house is incredible. We enjoyed being so close to the beach, loved the hot tub, and made very good use of Candace's Jeep (as an add-on the house rental). We couldn't have been happier.
In response to other reviews, we were there for a week from Christmas to New Years and didn't have any issues with mosquitos or other bugs. We were expecting them but never needed to break out the bug spray.
The caretakers were responsive to questions and easy to communicate with. The house was well-stocked and comfortable. And the setting on the beach is so peaceful and lovely. We'll be back!

A clean and well maintained property at a wonderful location was our base for an enjoyable experience in St John. We loved the beach and enjoyed snorkeling. The local manager met us at the ferry and guided us home and familiarized us with the property. He answered questions and gave us advice for the week. All equipment worked and we specially enjoyed the views and the spa. The local pets visited each day and added to our experience. The home was ecologically friendly and just right sized for our group of 5. Everything was close by and beaches a short drive away.
4.9
The property has gorgeous views and is truly breathtaking ! Be prepared to not want to leave the house and explore St John because literally the views cannot be beat! Clean, well stocked and easy to find and the owner and staff were top notch! Highly recommended for a one of a kind experience.

We loved our stay here. It was private but convenient. The view was beautiful and we loved hearing the waves on the pebble beach. We also really enjoyed the open concept and the deck areas. The whole experience with the owner and property managers was great and it was an easy process to check in and out. Everyone was very responsive and helpful. We also appreciated having the optional jeep rental. We really enjoyed our time here and would definitely stay at Mampoo Hill again!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Mampoo Hill. The outdoor living space is magical and it was perfect for our family vacation. Everything was exactly as described or better. The photos do not do it justice. The house was well-stocked, communication was great and we wanted for nothing. We'd come back in a heart-beat.

First of all, this house is located in a beautiful area and designed in a way that was so extraordinary. We waited over 6months to be able to stay in this home as the ratings were 5-star and reading all the wonderful comments. We enjoyed our stay and would like to return. However, I do believe in transparency to others who are looking for a place to stay in St. John, VI. I would like to share some things that may or may not affect others' decisions about staying here. Unfortunately, we had difficulty in contacting Jennifer and Craig Troisi before arriving to the home. Somehow, 2 emails that we sent to her regarding flight information was not received. Jennifer did apologize later after another email and phone text were sent. Upon arriving to the airport, Craig was called several times to notify him upon landing and time of arrival. He was not easily contacted for whatever reason. He, also apologized. I think the following information would be handy to know before-hand regarding the jeep rental. We would rent from Craig and Jennifer again, but know that their jeep is NOT located at the home. It is kept at a jeep rental/parking lot right outside the ferry landing at St. John's called "Slim Man's". We didn't realize this and it made for an extremely frustrating traveling day. Craig did meet us there and helped us home to get situated. He left without giving us information about the location of keys, but fortunately, the bug spraying man who let himself in the next morning, told us where they were located. If you are looking for high-end accommodations and appliances, this is not for you. The main reason behind the home's design is to experience the outdoor beauty and the indoor/outdoor house appeal is super cool! However, the outdoor weather and sea air does not allow for stainless appliances to be kept in mint condition. Therefore, most appliances (including coffee pot) were very outdated and could be replaced. The washer and dryer provided were a nice treat, but again, the washer made horrible noises and both were quite dated. Also, the smaller bedroom ceiling was full of cobwebs. Lastly, the listing says there is a beach/sandy entry to the right of the water. It's all rocks and full of sea urchins. After all of this, the good outweighed the negative. Most of these things listed are such minor things. We enjoyed our stay and highly recommend this beautiful home. We would love to be back.

Many Positives and a Few Significant Negatives
Positives: The ocean view from the house is stunning and the layout was perfect for our family of two adults and two teenage daughters. The support staff, Jennifer and Craig, could not have been more helpful including getting us from the ferry to the house-Jeep, showing us the way to the house while pointing out essential accommodations (grocery store, gas station, where to drop off our garbage on a daily basis), and responding to texts when we had a few questions. The bathrooms and storage areas are spacious. The hot tub was fun when we could use it (see below) and the location of the house was easily accessible to Cruz Bay, the wonderful beaches and the grocery stores. The house is nestled away in a beautiful spot and some of the wildlife (the iguanas and bananaquits) were a source of wonder and amusement.
Negatives: THE MOSQUITOS - the mosquitos were omnipresent in the morning and from 4 pm thru the evening and forced us inside despite high doses of the house-supplied deet. Two of the days, the mosquitoes were present most of the day. Two floor fans or screened-in area would have allowed us to enjoy the beautiful view from the deck, but instead we were stuck in our bedrooms for significant periods of time every day of our visit. A tall oscillating fan or a ceiling fan would make the hot tub more inviting. Craig warned us to keep any food covered up in the kitchen because a pearly-eyed thrasher took full advantage of the open-air layout of the house and would eat anything that was laying out. This proved to be quite an understatement. We stored every food item, but still fell victim to the incredibly audacious bird who would watch us eat from the railing and swoop down and take food from our plates or from dirty dishes in the sink if we left them unattended for even a moment. Even an unopened bag of almonds that we had taken out of the fridge for a few minutes was poked open. It was comic and annoying to be constantly shooing the bird away. Finally, the access point to swim in Devers Bay was further away than we expected and proved to be more than 100 yards away over a rocky shoreline.

Best Stay in St. John
Mampoo Hill is a beautiful, open-air home located on scenic Dever’s Bay. Amazing views await at this gem tucked on the bay among vegetation and wildlife. We enjoyed the amenities of modern living with a true island experience. Jennifer and Craig were very helpful with our arrival/departure, dining recommendations and checking-in to see how our stay was going.

This is our 3rd time staying at Mampoo Hill and we now feel like we're coming home, especially with the welcome from Craig. This house is such a wonderful place, providing a welcome respite from the mass of tourists on the island. A slice of old St. John, Mampoo Hill is where we go when the beaches get too crowded. Thank you, Candy, Jennifer & Craig for every thing you do to make your house our home away from home on Devers Bay. See you next year!

I brought my 15 and 12 year old daughters for a girls-only trip and we all absolutely LOVED this house. The views are incredible, the sounds of the ocean, the breeze, everything - we could not have been happier. The "beach" (rocks, no sand) is easily accessible and we loved walking it and finding shells and tons of hermit crabs and other creatures. Bedrooms were nice sized and each had a bathroom, AC worked great, beds were very comfy. Kitchen was well appointed & they have beach chairs, beach towels and other beach items you can use when you go to the beach! The ability to rent her Jeep was amazing - no standing around waiting like all the other suckers when they get off the ferry. Just wonderful. we Loved it. DEFINITELY bring LOTS of bug spray. The mosquitos ate us alive (visited mid-April) but we didn't even care (too much). I can't wait to stay here again. Just perfect.

My husband and 23 year old son visited SJJ for a week in March. This was our last family vacay before our son gets married. This was our first trip to St John and Mampoo House and definitely hope it’s not our last. The house and views were amazing! Also, the owner and Jennifer and Craig were great to work with. They answered all of my MANY questions. Craig also made several suggestions on fishing suggestions for my husband and son! I would highly recommend Mampoo House on St John!! It’s our new Happy Place!!

I rate Mampoo Hill a B+
I’ve been going to St John for close to 20 years. I’ve stayed in all diff villas.
This was a very diff exp as it’s completely open in the living area. Beautiful, and crashing waves all day and even louder it felt at night. We loved the concept but we did not like the mosquitos as soon as the sun starts to sink at 4:30-5. We had to put high concentrated deet on.
The ceiling fans did help but a floor fan would have been great to keep them off our legs.
Not really able to go swimming at this bay from your beach but we did get to a sm place at the end to snorkel. Tricky!
If your not stable on your feet I would advise it.
Loved the incredible view from the decks!!
Mesmerizing!!!
The bedrooms were clean however one much bigger than the other! Not able to see from pictures. No biggy as we only sleep in them but if you want to get away from mosquitos you have to go into larger bedroom and hang out.
Craig our manager was not available for the 11 days we were there accept to show us the way after finally finding our jeep at the correct slims parking lot and after calling and leaving a message and a text he finally called at the airport. No information as to were to leave the owners rented jeep.
Ended up leaving it at a parking lot at 5:30 am as we had to catch the 6am ferry.
Not a big deal but the microwave died midway the vacation. Tried to tell Craig but no response. I know how St. John rolls and we did not expect a new one.
Over all the place was clean and had everything we needed.
Not sure if this will remain posted cause when we were looking at reviews of mampoo there wasn’t much said about mosquitos and that might have deterred us. Alas, we love St John and have a wonderful time as usual!!
Lastly, if you want to go out to eat make resi before you even go on Vaca!! Very crowded due to covid and not alot of help at restaurants.
