Second time at this complex. This unit was vastly superior to the one we stayed at last year. Biggest difference was comfort of furniture and a much better equipped kitchen. Kitchen wasn’t gourmet but had an everything needed and in good quantity! Ample amount of towels too. I have stayed in probably 15-20 vacation rentals and it was the best kitchen furnishings I have experienced. The Kona Makai complex is extremely well manicured and cared for. It is quiet, clean and well furnished with pool/patio furniture and ample parking. Pool was clean and comfortable temp as was hot tub. View from the point west of the pool is soooo nice. Can’t say enough good things about this complex and I felt this particular unit was great value. Hope to return in the future. Knutson and Associates was property manager for this particular unit and they were great to work with!

Unit was clean and available on time. Check in was easy. Good location, close to everything, yet not in crowned area. Parking was easy. Would stay there again.

We were very happy with our accommodations. It worked well for our group of five. The sunsets from the deck were breathtaking. We had everything that we needed, and management was very helpful and easy to communicate with.

The overall facility was beautiful, in a great location, with access to coastal lava and an amazing blow hole. Outdoor grills were excellent. Hot tub and pool and landscaping were amazing. The apartment, itself, was a little old and janky. The dishwasher racks tended to fall out whenever we opened it because of a missing roller. And the fridge tended to not close fully, so we had to always double check and often reclose it to make sure it remained closed. The knives (as is almost always the case in every VRBO) were dull and not very useful. Several lights and electrical sockets were not functioning. There was cable, but only bare-bones stations available. Nevertheless, there were nice views from both lanais, and it was cozy, comfortable and sufficient for our needs. Plenty of extra towels and linens. Good washing machine. And the loft was super convenient for kids or teens. And the owner was super nice and friendly and helpful.

We are a family of four, with 2 middle grade kids that don't like to share a bed. This place fit the bill with two twin beds in the loft, and that was perfect for us. It is also conveniently located quite close to many of the Kona coast's tourist attractions, restaurants, etc. The pool is beautiful, and being right next to the ocean is really nice. Other reviewers have commented on the copious number of rules that this place seems to come with. It is laughable, really, (Do not make a splash when entering the pool?!?) and can certainly be off-putting. We didn't have any trouble, though, even with middle-grade kids who *did* use the pool. Overall, we had a great time and would certainly consider staying in this place again!

The unit was the perfect size for our large group. The check-in and check-out instructions were seamless and easy to follow. There are cooking supplies and utensils in the kitchen so you can cook while you're there. The location is great and secure, the pool was nice, and the property manager was responsive to questions.

Gorgeous grounds, lovely condo fit the 6 of us well. Proximity to Kona was perfect, lived way hung the sunsets right by the pool over the lava rocks. Just magical.

The ladder is very steep so not suitable for young children. We enjoyed eating breakfast and dinner on the lanai. You can see the ocean when standing and sitting in one spot. If they had a higher table, bar height, the view would be better. We watched the sunset every night from the hot tub and pool, sometimes having the whole pool to ourselves. This condo is more suited for older children as kids under 14 are not allowed in the hot tub and strict rules for playing and splashing in the pool. We enjoyed not having a lot of young children around, very quiet and peaceful. The condo is in a great location to drive either north or south. You do need to drive at least 20-40 minutes to get to the nice white sand beaches. We didn't mind though, we drove around the entire island. Kona is close and you could walk, but we always drove as it was too hot to walk along the road. There wasn't much for beach supplies, no chairs or proper cooler, but we made do with what we had. Kitchen was well stock with everything you need. Family also enjoyed playing ping pong and tennis. The property management company was great to deal with, very responsive. We would totally stay here again!

Sunsets from the waterfront were a trip highlight. The only downside was the negative tone at Kona Makai set by 15 signs at the pool starting with “No”, long lists of “No” including pickleball on the mostly empty tennis courts, and long term residents calling management for every perceived infraction, like a towel hung on the rail of the lanai.

Complex is a great location with water front pool and bbq and common area. Unit itself is older decor/carpeting. 3 AC units was a bonus, plus the fans made for comfortable conditions. Not many “extras” provided but we left a few token items for the beach and unit to get the next group started. Lovely view and two lanais made for wonderful time inside and out. The complex has strict rules about the pool they enforce, so keep an eye on your kids and make sure they can follow the rules (no jumping/diving in,no hot tub for kids). The lights on the bushes and trees during Christmas were a wonderful touch.

We enjoyed our stay at Kona-Makai. There were a couple of things missing at check in but the property manager was super quick to assist and make everything perfect for our stay. The loft space isn't ideal if you have younger kids as there is only a ladder up and it's really high (even as an adult I only went up once and chose to sleep on the full out sofa). Kitchen ans laundry facilities in room are great and we loved the lanai front and back to enjoy meals. We will be back for sure!

We love Kona Makai condos. Right on the ocean, close to town. This condo was great for what we needed. Only couple little complaints. The refrigerator ice maker didn't work. Ok, but provide some ice cube trays. Also blender didn't work; lots of lovely wine glasses, but no wine bottle opener; nice coffee maker, how about provide some filters; also some other basics like foil would be nice. Since we were there for 5 days, really didn't want to buy all those items

Very convenient location to Kona. We enjoyed the views and the pool. The condo was clean and the perfect amount of space. We would stay there again.

We largely enjoyed our stay at this property, and found most of what we needed (a corkscrew would’ve been helpful) already available in this relatively spacious and comfortable condo. A warning to anyone without teens: the loft is accessed by a very steep ladder (which our kids LOVED). Our sole complaint was cleanliness: the shower wall appeared to be growing a very dark mold in the tile seams, and the ceiling fan and high beams above the master bed were caked with dust bunnies, having apparently never been cleaned (making it disconcerting to sleep under). Otherwise the property itself was fairly ideal, parking was easy to find, and the residents were quiet and friendly.

Besides the ladder to get to the loft for the kids (other units we’ve stayed in have staircases to get to the loft) the room was perfect. There were chairs and an umbrella and snorkel gear (no fins) available for use as well. The ice machine didn’t work which was a bummer so we had to buy ice. But in the end not a big deal. We love Kona Makai and this unit was great!

Pros- great location, friendly tenants, beautiful grounds, lots of amenities, easy to communicate with the rental company Cons- none worth noting; we're in Hawaii right on the beach, how could it be bad?!

The condo was a nice Hawaiian home. Was not as clean as I would have liked but the price was great. Older gym but has what you need. Area is great and as long as you have all of the AC running all day and night you are good to stay cool.

We had a couple of issues during our stay, but the management team bent over backwards to make things right. The unit was very clean and the king size bed was delightful! Would definitely recommend this unit to everyone!
