My husband and I were used to going to San Antonio in our younger years, before we knew each other. On this trip, We took each other around, but our favorite thing to do was just relax at this amazing house/land. I did not want to leave. Great for our dog, too!

There are several cottage homes on this ranch property, and they are very charming and historic. The house was very spacious with 3 bedrooms and a bathroom, with plenty of common areas. It had all the amenities we needed including a fenced in backyard for the dogs and washer dryer in a nearby shed. The horses were super friendly and came to greet us at the fence each day when we went to say hello. This is such a wonderful property and great for family reunions in the big house and maybe even booking the other two cottages. The only area for improvement is that the well water is pretty hard / mineral-heavy, so the dishwasher struggled to get the dishes sparkling clean and our skin was pretty dry too. All in all it was a wonderful stay and we'd visit again if the chance presents itself.

This a hidden gem. It’s not far from the loop in San Antonio but secluded among old live oaks and a families historic home. Loved reading the family history and viewing the pictures of the past.

We stayed in the county cottage for 3 nights. It was very relaxing. My kids and I loved the horses. They came right up to you when you called them. There are two other smaller cottages on the property but privacy was good. The place was so well stocked, way better than other VRBO’s we’ve stayed at. The cottage itself was very old but neat and a cool experience. It was clean but it’s country living and there were some cobwebs hanging around. The only disappointment is that I didn’t see a concierge pony that was listed in the property. Nice to stay outside of San Antonio. Great stay!

Our family had an amazing stay at the cottage! We were a bit surprised to have painters there all week but they were awesome men who were so respectful! We ended up totally enjoying their company! Linda was an awesome hostess & left little "gifts" when we were gone! The week was wonderful & we will definitely be staying there every time we come to San Antonio!! We also had fabulous neighbors while we were there! Highly recommend Menger Cottages!

We've stayed in the Carriage House and now the "Cottage". The term "Cottage" is misnomer, because really is a full house. Very enjoyable; we just relax and hang out in the yard. Old Helotes is just down the street, with great ice cream place. Is conveniently close to San Antonio, midway to some hot spots my son enjoys. Is also pet friendly, so our dog gets to come too. Great spot!

Fit our needs perfectly. Very rustic on the outside with modern amenities inside.
The bed in master BR was a little uncomfortable for my wife but, we didn't try the others and got thru the 5 nights just fine. Fenced in area for the dog was fantastic. He loved going out to look for the horses. The cleaning could have been a little better and the grill needs to be replaced but, overall we would definitely stay there again. Very quiet, safe and relaxing location!

Ranch cottage and grounds
2 sons, a grandson, my husband and I stayed two nights at the cottage and enjoyed it very much. It was so nice to be in the country . We are from Minnesota and were visiting our son who lives in Dallas, so rented a car and made the drive to San Antonio. The horses and chickens were fun to watch and we enjoyed the porches with the rocking chairs and swing. We would have liked to stay longer but the boys needed to be back for work and college. We did drive into San Antonio to see the Alamo and Riverwalk, but it was spring break and St. Patricks weekend and very crowded! We went to El Chapperalle for dinner on Friday evening and that was great. We fixed 2 meals at the cottage and found the kitchen to be fully stocked with all that we needed. We would definitely recommend this vacation retreat to everyone!

Definitely recommend.
This is an old farm/ranch house with significant charm. There's a silent history that seems ever present. The porch and fire pit are the highlights. The bathroom situation is the only reason I don't give it 5 stars. It wouldn't be a problem if you are only one couple. But if there is more than one it becomes a little tedious in the mornings trying to get everyone ready. But if your patient and willing to live with that limitation, you should otherwise enjoy your time here!

Rustic, historical, and beautiful.
The home is absolutely beautiful, and has lots of character. The view from the front porch is awesome. Beautiful winding trees and view of the hill country. We met up with the horses and chickens which my son absolutely loved that. The owner is very very nice and even shared fresh eggs from the chickens. The inside of the home was very nice and comfortable. The beds were great as well. I have no complaints about the property. It's far enough to not hear the sounds of the city, but close enough to enjoy the attractions San Antonio has to offer by a short drive. I would definitely check this place out if you're coming to the San Antonio area.

Wonderful Holiday stay in the beautiful Hill Country!
This was our 2nd stay at the Big Cottage only this time we were here for a whole month! If you enjoy being in the country (Texas Hill Country that is), this is the perfect location for your next trip to South Texas! Located on about 8 acres, this large, 100+ year old home offers a very peaceful and quiet environment. While the home maintains much of it's early 1900's tradition our hosts, Linda and Joe have made many updates and improvements to the home and are very accessible and responsive to any need a guest may have. There are the 2 friendly horses, Starbuck and Jack to greet you every day (make sure to bring them a carrot) and the rocking chairs on the large front porch are great to just sit and watch nature! Even though this property is located in the beautiful Hill County, there are many restaurants and shopping attractions easily accessible and within 5 miles of the home. Make sure to visit El Chaparral for the best Mexican food and Bobby J's for a great homemade hamburger both located just 2 miles down the road! You can even get to the famous River-walk in downtown San Antonio in about 35 minutes! During our stay, we had a family get together just after Xmas and the large outside, lighted patio area offered a great place for all of us to enjoy the large fire pit and a warm December evening. Obviously we are partial but we highly recommend the Big Cottage to anyone wanting to get away for just a long weekend or a whole month. We are looking forward to booking our reservation for this coming year and cannot wait to return.

Country living at its best
We were fortunate to again be able to rent the Cottage House. It was a great experience with everything in order and wonderful condition. the location was quiet and peaceful and even saw a deer on the property Saturday morning. If you have had enough of hotels and motels and can enjoy a country setting, but only 5 miles from Loop 1604, and direct access to all of San Antonio; then this is the place for you. Nothing like relaxing with your own coffee and breakfast on the beautiful front porch before you head out on your adventures. Don't miss it and thanks for all your hospitality - and the fresh eggs from your chickens. Joe MacLean

Very relaxing!
We stayed at the Menger Cottages "Big Cottage" on Easter weekend 2016. It was very peaceful and we enjoyed everything about it. My adult children and I were able to really relax and enjoy the place. There was ample space for the 6 of us, we cooked out and sat by the fire pit. We enjoyed coffee in the mornings on the huge front porch and loved the big oaks. I am so glad that we ran into Linda and her husband while they were there feeding the horses and got to know the history of the place. We were going to a concert at Floores and it was very convenient to the location. Will go there again if the opportunity arises.

Great Hill Country Xmas
This was our 2nd visit to the Menger Cottages & 1st time stay in the Big Cottage. Our son & family lives about 8 miles away & this was the perfect accommodation to visit with them & still have our own privacy. This home is very cozy & has much history. During our 2-week stay, we had a Xmas reunion with our family. The outside patio area was perfect; it was 75 degrees & we had a fire going in the fire pit - plenty of room for 12 to 14 people to move around and enjoy visiting with each other. Our granddaughter made good friends with horses, Starbuck & Jack and they looked forward to their carrot snacks on her every visit! Home is conveniently located to get around San Antonio easily too. Thanks to Linda & Joe for their great hospitality & we look forward to staying here again next December!

Beautiful location for wedding celebration!
We've stayed at the Menger Cottages several time but this stay was particularly special. For the first time, we gathered with my brother's new in-laws to celebrate his NY/Japan nuptials. What a great space to gather close but still feel we had space to spare! With guests from several different cultures and out of town spots, it was nice to rent both and have everyone in on place. We were able to comfortably gather around the table to enjoy meals as a group. After breakfast, we could scatter for a minute as we prepared for our days - some enjoying coffee under the trees watching the puppy (ours) enjoy the horses (that live at the ranch) as they came to the fenced in yard to find out about their new "friends;" others enjoying the front porch and trees; while others enjoyed walking the property to see if any of the native wildlife would show. But the best part was being able to gather family, even larger than what was staying on the property, for a beautiful family party in the barn! With plenty of space to serve buffet style and seat about 30 guests, it was a great party spot. It was a lot of fun to see the little children enjoy the horses as they came up to join the party along the fence lines. We keep coming back because every time we find a new reason to love this place!
