[This review continues in the next section] Firstly let me say this poor review has nothing to do with the lovely Thai staff who were incredibly helpful, friendly and not at all at fault (the owner was actually away overseas at the time of our stay and had to be called multiple times to resolve various issues).
I’m not sure what the other rooms were like, but the “deluxe 2br villa” we stayed in was quite overpriced for what it was, and I would definitely not recommend staying here. The only good thing that can be said is it was spacious. It’s a shame the majority of that space was unusable due to no airconditioning making it around a sweltering and unbearable 40 degrees (104 Fahrenheit) throughout the day. Despite being listed as an airconditioned villa, the only aircon was a single, inadequate wall unit in the bedrooms at the back which was mounted in a hole cut through the shared wall, half sticking out in each room. Also, due to the lack of s-bends in the plumbing and the extreme heat, the bathroom reeked of sewage.
The photos on the booking.com website for the 2br deluxe villa are four years old and really need to be updated, as does the inclusions list. Differences include: there is only a half-sized fridge, no toaster and no microwave in the kitchen, only a gas cooktop, both burners with broken ignition requiring very dangerous manual ignition with a regular lighter resulting in singed fingers; the TV is not in the common area, it is ceiling mounted in one of the bedrooms and wouldn’t turn on displaying a constant ‘check signal’ error; rather than nice decorations on the shelving, a box of rat poison was featured alluding to the major mouse/rat problem in the villa—we could hear them scurrying around in the ceiling and there were droppings all over the kitchen; I’m not too sure what the listed ‘terrace’ would have been either. The photos also do not give an accurate depiction of the free breakfast, as it was not much more than you’d get at a hostel.
Some important things the photos don’t show are that two entire walls and the sliding front entrance door (which jammed constantly and didn’t close properly with a large gap at the top) in the main living, dining, and kitchen space were just fly screens, many with holes and gaps where mosquitoes, bugs and geckoes (the only creature I didn’t mind sharing my room with) came in and out as they pleased. We had to cover ourselves head to toe with insect repellant and were still eaten alive by mozzies even while sleeping. The fact that there are no glass windows and the curtains only cover half the screened walls, means there was zero privacy in sight, sound or smell. Despite promoting itself as a no smoking property, there were constantly people smoking just outside the room (even in the common area during breakfast) with the smell and smoke coming straight in through the screens. This was a major issue as one of us suffers from an autoimmune condition exacerbated by cigarette smoke and to stress how important this was, we had specifically asked for a non-smoking room in the special requests.
These are all things one might expect from a much cheaper, budget place to stay, of which there are a multitude in Thailand! Needless to say, we were almost relieved when we were forced to cut our stay short and return to Australia due to the virus despite having paid for 4 unused nights at this property. I sure hope both booking.com as well as Khao Lak Relax Resort amends their listing appropriately to avoid future guests having stays as unpleasant as ours was!
