This beautiful historic guesthouse was magical. It was like stepping into a time warp to a bygone era.
The simple but comfortable cottage had its own little courtyard for our small Westie dog. Peace and quiet abounded as the estate is set high on a hill away from any road traffic noise.
A short drive to many of the beautiful highland towns, meant that shopping and restaurants were within easy access.

Very spacious apartments and a serene location with lovely views
The property and gardens are quite rundown. The gardens could be wonderful with a bit of tlc.

Great location
There were no spare blankets and it was very cold in the room at night
Needs a lot of maintenance work.
OH&S
1 enamel coming of bath if not noticed would definitely cut you.
2 front porch rotting at front door
3 leaking dripping shower that would not turn off over night quire annoying

keeping old heritage style
As the place represented old age, the clean level was a bit bad

Amazing site, old estate, unique stay! Beds were very comfortable and lovely continental breakfast.
A more thorough clean would make it better as it’s old and it tends to get dusty easily.

Just the cold weather, but it was expected. Bring extra blanket.

Beautiful views. Huge rooms
Bathroom was very cold. Definitely needs more heating

The location was very good and the grounds pleasant and scenic.
Our room was large and cold. The heating was insufficient as were the window coverings. The property is sold as being a historic estate and it obviously is. However we thought having to wash the breakfast dishes in a plastic tub on the dining table with water drawn from the bathroom taps and then heated in the kitchen electric kettle was a bit to rustic for us.

Great location and beautiful grounds.
The driveway is quite long and quite rough

Great location just off the main road, very quiet but still close enough to most attractions.
It was very thoughtful to provide a portfolio with the estate history, local aboriginal history, and some points of interest/nearby dining options.
Also, the fridge was stocked with some nice essentials. Tea, coffee, milk, juice, jams, butter, bread, and cereals.
First off, the accommodation is 140 years old, we understand that, and it is part of the appeal of staying at the estate.
However, little comforts go a long way. Basic utilities like the kettle and microwave were plugged in with extension leads that were just coiled on the floor. We had to swap the leads around when we wanted to use the kettle to avoid it dropping from its perch above the microwave. Quite a clumsy setup.
Similar again to the toaster in the cupboard, there's a lead there but no power to it, and no idea where it ran to, so we ended up using it on the ground.
The front door wouldn't latch closed while we were inside, and it kept swinging open. Anytime we walked in or out we had to hold it closed and use the key to lock the deadbolt so it would remain shut.
To find our way around in the dark on the first night, we left the bathroom light on because of how dark the property is (which we love). However, we woke to find the bathroom invaded by millipedes that had covered the walls and floor. Although harmless, it wasn't very comforting to wake up to.

Our home away from home. Stayed many times with our dogs and love it every time!

This is quite a special location filled with history and carefully preserved. Very fascinating. Great location and well appreciated for the type of stay we needed.
It could use additional supplies such as dishwashing facilities and some extra throws/blankets. This would help to feel a bit more cozy and self sufficient. Would love to have learnt more about each building and how it was used throughout its heritage as well.

Private, magnificent grounds full of history.. Once the holiday home to Governers .
Nothing I could see I didn’t like.. I read some negative comments.. I find if you are visiting a rustic homestead, you have to accept things will be rustic and antique… that’s the charm! some don’t get it!

Magnificent grounds and the ancient tree lined driveway to the Estate was enchanting. Seeing the various large scale sculptures among the grounds as a sculpture park was unique. The sense of history at Hillview was palpable. Our cottage, the old Chapel, was spacious, charming and the best and pillows extra comfortable. Damien, the host, was welcoming and tremendously knowledgeable about the history of the Estate and we enjoyed his tour of the original Governor's Home.
A better equipped kitchen with a sink would have been nice but given the historical nature of the accommodation, understandable. There were provisions in the form of a wash tub to clean our dishes. We did not receive our breakfast hamper of milk, juice and muffins but had bought our own food so if was OK.

location & scenery. cute cabins. good food & drinks provided.
bathroom didn’t have drain & shower head went over bath leaving the bathroom flooded. Cold on feet.

Damien is a wonderful host and very helpful. We loved the location and the beautiful grounds. The beds are comfortable and the shower is very good.
we didn’t realise that the bathroom is only able to be accessed via the second bedroom which is an issue unless occupied by a family. There is no daily housekeeping so we had to make our beds and do our own washing up. this was difficult because there is no sink or water in the kitchen area so the wash tub has to be filled from the shower! Some of the doors don’t close properly and there are no bedside lights in the second bedroom. Given some of the quirkiness of the property, $200+ per cottage is not very good value for money. Nevertheless we managed over the three days of our stay.

spectacular location surrounded by beautiful landscapes and old trees. The sculpture garden was a bit tired but a great bonus. Stunning sunset. The slightly shabby buildings were full of historic character and seemed to be full of stories of visitors from the past. Comfortable cottage, dog friendly.
TV difficult to work and had a poor picture. Hot water ran out before the wonderful old bath in the bedroom was full enough .

Beautiful situation with cute cottages. Damien was very helpful and obliging.

Great continental breakfast served in 'country style' which was lovely. Good choice of options for spreads. Damien was excellent in providing enough food for a family of 5 after we contacted him and very accomodating. Excellent host.
The location and scenery were brilliant. Gorgeous views in every direction. We really appreciated the peace and quiet and considerate guests. Bedding was comfortable, warm and clean.
We loved the 'period style' furniture and set up. Even though everything was genuinely old, was not 'germy or yuck', very comfortable and quaint.
The bathroom had an odour either from septic tank or musty, damp floorboards near the shower. This may need to be rectified as the smell did travel thru the bedroom.
Unfortunately, despite booking and paying for 5, we got a trundle for the tall teenager and only 4 chairs, cups, plates, etc. We made-do, but when paying for 4 adults and 1 child(whose age was stated) you do expect provisions for all. Damien brought a 5th serve of cereal, which was appreciated.

Stunning old location with so much beauty and charm. Great heating in the cottage. Really easy to find. Great communication with owner. Breakfast is extremely basic but good portions. The grounds are absolutely stunning and maintained really well.
Cleaning was really poor, toiletries and dirty towel left in the shower from previous guests which makes me question if the bathroom was cleaned at all. Floor and rugs were not cleaned prior to our stay. The cottages need updating ASAP, chipped paint everywhere, old stained furniture, stained bathtub etc.

It is a rustic cottage, but the heater worked well and the bed was comforatable and warm. We booked the family room as I needed a stove to heat our dinner, it was perfect for our needs. A great stopover on the way from Melbourne to Gold Coast with our dog.

A wonderful bit of history in our little cottage built in 1882 - part of the complex built as a retreat for the early NSW governors (Vice Regal) as a summer retreat. With living and separate bedroom area it included simple furnishings that were a lovely eclectic mix suited perfectly to the wonderful old cottage. There is nothing fancy but everything you need! Freezing outside, but we were lovely and warm inside with gas heater. Interesting and large grounds to wander around - the sculptures aren't particularly to my taste but I'm no art expert! The Sutton Forest pub provided a great dinner and breakfast supplies were left in the cottage for us; and Berrima is also nearby to explore for great cafe's and history!
I found out about the history of the place through Facebook - it would have been lovely to have some more info provided in the cottage.
