Exploring via camper van is one of the best ways to see all the sites and avoid excessive driving (and costs) between your lodging and next adventure. If you’ve rented a camper van on the mainland before, you should know it’s a little different on the Big Island. It’s technically illegal to sleep in a vehicle in public spaces. I have put together a map of spots on the island where you could park overnight, both private drives, secret spots, and campgrounds that you will need to obtain a permit beforehand. I have had no issues by being thoughtful and mindful of where I park overnight.
