A comfortable and cost effective option. However what really made my stay was the friendly and helpful staff especially Paula and Jackie.

We used to take our children here years ago on riverside trips and were really pleased by our four night stay. Nice clean room with very big bed, relaxing pub, good food and a quiet location with plenty of free parking space. Staff are nice and helpful. We'll be back.

Staff were great. Room was nice and clean. A decent pint and freshly cooked breakfast. Good value for money.

The room was comfortable. I ate in the restaurant, which was pleasant but my food was very late. When I chased, they had. An explanation - there was no coleslaw. I didn't want any anyway and would have appreciated the opportunity to let them know before my stomach thought my throat had been cut...!
I was disturbed very early because of a burst pipe. It didn't affect me or my room, luckily.
I think it's a nice hotel l and well placed for m my business trips. I will visit again and give them another shot. The staff were pleasant and tried to be helpful.
3.0
Massive carpark at the front and back.
Check in at the side of the bar
The room was up a flight of stairs and you need a code to get into the corridor.
The room was a good size as was the bathroom.
Quite drab and worn looking decor, lots of repair jobs, no headboard but just marked walls as seen in photos!
The bed was ok
Wifi is good
The shower was ok
Evening meal was limited menu due to a burst water pipe in the restaurant!
Went for the chicken and mushroom pie
Very overcooked pie with rather tough pastry.
Good size portion
Not bad value.
Breakfast is not included but can be added if wanted.
Location right opposite a river with some nice walks.
Not much else close by though.
Would stay again if there was nothing else close by.

Superb Hotel, great service snd wonderful food service

I have stayed at two Marston Inns before and this one was different! The rooms are very old, well decorated but had not been properly cleaned. There were large cobwebs on my ceiling that had obviously been there for a long time. The staff are very friendly and seem to be rather obsessed about reviews. The food was rather overcooked and dry and the service, especially at breakfast was very slow. The location is superb.

I stayed at The Unicorn with my 6 year old daughter for 2 midweek nights in August. The staff were amazing, especially Jackie and Hannah. The evening meal was great value and the continental breakfast was delicious!
The bed was the most comfortable I think I've ever slept on.
The building itself does need a little tidying up. The seals on the shower were a little grubby and some of the paintwork and carpets in the rooms were looking tired. The bar and food areas were lovely though.
We had no problems getting our electric car charged and the little climbing frame in the beer garden round the back kept my little one entertained for ages.

Great stay, very clean room with a lovely view.

Lovely bar and hotel by the beautiful river Trent.
5.0
We were pleased with our stay. We only stayed for a night. The food was nice, the bar/restaurant was busy but we still got our food reasonably fast. The view was beautiful. Shame we had no time to walk around. It was easy to find and there was plenty of parking.

Firstly, the beds were incredibly comfortable and I had the best nights sleep! Unfortunately the hotel itself is in need of some repair and maintenance so it looks very tired and dated. The place was very busy but only had 3 staff which meant a long wait for drinks and food. The area in which the hotel is situated was beautiful and the canal stunning.

Nice stay at the Unicorn. Food was tasty.
The bathroom wasnt the cleanest- hairs in the bath!
The staff were very welcoming and friendly.
The place could do with a revamp- starting to look tired.

Have stayed in The Unicorn many times in the past and have been very satisfied however this particular room lacked in a few small things.
One side of the double bed did not have any surface to place personal items such as watch, phone and wallet or cash etc. Because of the exceptional large bed there was not enough room for a bedside cabinet on that side but maybe a small shelf would be handy.
Also one side of the bed had a light switch but it didn’t appear to do anything, I would have expected it to switch off the main light (the only light in the room) instead of having to use the main wall switch on the other side of the room and stumble back to the bed in the dark.
That same side of the bed had a just one single socket but it was not a standard 13amp socket but a round pin one which was unusable leaving the room a little short on useable wall sockets.
Just these small negatives, if sorted, would improve the stay immensely. Having said that we will gladly be back again to enjoy the fabulous riverside location and friendly staff.

As at 18 May 2024 this hotel has a 4 star rating and an 8 guest score on Expedia. Because of that rating I paid a very high tariff for the quality of accommodation actually provided. This hotel has 2 star accommodation. My room didn't even have a bedside lamp.
Somehow the star system has been gamed here.

Good sized room and the bed was huge. The rooms are above the bar area which was fine as its wasn't too noisy. The car parking is easy as there is loads of space. I used this location as it was a short drive to the Water Sports Centre in Nottingham. the kitchens close about 8:30 ish so if you are late back for food I can recommend the Indian about 100mtrs down the road.
All in all a nice location for a few days away

Rooms very tired and in need of refurbishment.
House keeping was poor.

We've stayed before - same problem as last time. It was cold and the heating was only put on after some persistence from us. The staff here do not have control of the heating so it is hard for them to respond to a reasonable request for warmth
5.0
Very, very warm welcome from the staff. Just what I needed after a long drive. Good reasonable prices for good beer and excellent evening meal. Breakfast was the icing on the cake.
I will be back!

Amazing place to stay staff very friendly and helpfull food amazing best night sleep ever would deffo come back

Location was good. Room was fairly basic, but clean. Bed was comfortable and the shower was good. The toilet seat was broken. There was loud entertainment downstairs, which was very noisy until gone 11pm - not a problem for us, but might be for others!
Main issue was the timed heating, which did not come on until 6.15pm. Checkin was from 4pm, the bedroom was seriously cold and the temperature outside was several degrees below zero. The staff were unable nor apparently motivated to deal with this problem.

Easy and convenient for us. By the river with a good walk available at the side of the water

On arrival the first thing that strikes you is the building. With it being Christmas it was lit up and looked inviting. Inside we were not disappointed. Warm welcome at reception. Rooms located in corridors which are accessed via security doors. Excellent room with massive bed. Bed comfy and therefore great sleep quality. Room well furnished and spotlessly clean. Bathroom was fresh and looked to have been recently retiled. Shower cubicle was new but was on the small side. The food in the restaurant was very good as was the Marstons Pedigree. All the staff were helpful and polite. Will definitely be back.

First room had limited TV channels. The staff did all they could to fix but eventually I was moved to another room.
2.0
The restaurant and bar were closed due to a leak in the bar. The room had a leak coming from the ceiling down the wall. The carpet was wet from the leak. One of the bathroom towels had lots of dirty marks on. Would not stay here again.
8.0
Staff were very friendly and helpful. Plenty of parking to both front and rear. Amazing views of the river from some of the rooms. Lovely walk along the river nearby.
Rooms are clean and tidy. Some of the fixtures and fittings could do with being replaced but everything worked.

Nice clean and friendly would stay there again
4.0
No disabled access or facilities apart from smelly dirty bar area toilets.
3.0
Nice location, decent pub, friendly staff, however standard of accommodation a little tired & need of updating. Price point a little high.
4.0
The property has probably seen better days. It’s an impressive edifice, but is in need of updating inside, particularly in the hotel areas. The bedroom was shopworn and the tv had no remote. The bathroom was dirty, and the tub/shower was a menace, with a very slippery bottom and no shower mat or handholds.
2.0
Bedrooms with no headroom, Pillows as hard as bricks. Breakfast said finishing at 10.30am go to breakfast at 10.05 and all gone, They did cook breakfast for us, but charged us full continental breakfast, when we didn't get one.
4.0
We waited too long for check-in, although the woman who did the job was very friendly. Our room was large and our bed comfortable, but everything could have been quite a bit cleaner. Most disappointing was the kitchen. Two of the four items we wanted were unavailable in the evening, and in the morning we were informed that breakfast would not include eggs, since apparently they had "gone missing". The lighting didn't work in the stairwell to the accommodation area, which made use of the mechanical security keypad which unlocks the bedrooms corridor a challenge indeed, and the stairs themselves difficult for my 88 year old mother to navigate. The dining area suffers from enormous damp problems on at least one wall, and all of the public spaces are in somewhat desperate need of refurbishment. All in all, I would have liked this hotel - which in practice is a pub with rooms - to be very much better for the price.

Lovely spot. Parking. Clean & comfy

Generally good. Clean and well organised. Apart from the dirty mug.

Some aspects of this place are great and some are poor - condition of the bathroom in bedroom poor but public areas mainly well decorated. “Hob and coffee machine broken” so breakfast limited and only instant coffee
