Converted Shepherds Cottage in Traditional Cork Forest, Near Evora

This was a unique experience for us -- staying on a cork farm. The setting was stunning - the views amazing and you will truly get an authentic Alentejo experience. Note that is it not close to Evora, so keep that in mind. That said, I don't know that we've ever met a kinder and more welcoming host. Not only did his welcome us to the property, but he gave us a tour of his cork farm and explained the harvesting process -- it was such a personal touch and so fascinating. We just loved it.
The owner went above and beyond, helping us make dinner reservations and when I became sick from a sunburn and too much ambition to "see everything," he helped us navigate the best way to get medical help. He honestly could not have been nicer. A true gentleman.
If you want to see the beauty of the Alentejo countryside and to learn about cork farming (rather than taking an expensive tour), I recommend this stop for a relaxing and informative stay.

We stayed for 2 nights this August and were very happy. The property is lovely and the kids enjoyed the infinite pool. Paul was extremely helpful and set us up with a reservation at an excellent restaurant in Redondo upon our late arrival. Beautiful spot and would return again when visiting the Alentejo.

Enchanting, unique place in Portugal's cork country
Stayed one night with our young girls in this marvelous place in the hills outside Evora and can't say enough good things about the stay. Our hosts were helpful and responsive at every turn, and the setting of this picturesque farm can't be captured in words. Dining on the terrace as the sun set over cork trees and we looked out over the valley was magical. And although we only were able to stay for one night, it was among the most memorable of the our two-week stay in Portugal. Will most certainly come back when next in the country.

We are a family of five and really enjoyed our stay here. The kids loved hiking around the property, swimming in the pool and checking out the surrounding towns. The host had great food recommendations at nearby towns!

A relaxing stay in a beautiful place
My wife and I had a lovely week staying at Til’s Cottage. It is very well appointed, with excellent facilities, WiFi, privacy and comfort. The kitchen is compact but well equipped. And we cooked there most nights
The estate is beautiful and the tour of the cork forest from José was fascinating and is well worth doing. Walking in the forest, accompanied by the dogs, was a treat. I saw many bird species and I imagine that in spring this would be even more impressive.
The pool was beautiful and felt private, even with other guests in the main house, and had plenty of loungers and sunshades.
Communication was excellent and the owner, Phillip, even called me to let me know that he wouldn’t be able to meet us in person, which was very courteous. The staff were all very friendly and it was a pleasure to talk to them.
Overall, this was a fantastic place to stay and I would not hesitate to recommend it to friends and family, and would love to return.

Great spot to enjoy the countryside
My girlfriend and I stayed here in mid-June for 3 nights. We loved the privacy and convenience offered at this cottage. When we were there the weather was baking hot (36 to 38C daily highs) and after wandering around visiting the sites in the area during the day, we welcomed the coolness of the cottage. The thick walls retained coolness in the cottage even in the extreme heat. The cottage is part of a functioning farm, that appeared to produce olives, cork, wine, and goats. The owner, Phillip, sold us a bottle of the wine they make at the farm and I thought it was excellent (bought 4 more bottles to take home). The cottage has everything in it you need. We ate breakfast in the cottage every morning, buying groceries at the supermarket in Redondo. We really enjoyed the quiet evenings out on the cottage patio. Without a doubt, this was my favourite spot out of the 5 places we stayed at during our vacation in Portugal. Very memorable!

Delicious pool, amazing view
What a delightful place to spend a few hot days of summer. What could be more relaxing than sipping wine from the vineyard while toasting the view at sunset from the patio? Thanks to José and Jasmina for the warm welcome and for making us feel at home.

Perfect stay on a picturesque farm
Staying at Philip's house was amazing. The views from the house were beautiful, the house was really comfortable, and Philip was awesome. He was really willing to accomodate for any of our needs. We took a jeep tour of the cork farm and drank wine from in vineyard out in the vineyard. THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING!

Great stay
We stayed for 4 days in the cottage and really enjoyed it. The cottage is fairly basic but fine. The cork farm is very nice and peaceful for walks. We also took the jeep tours and that was worth it. Remember to buy a bottle of their best vine. That is very good. The new pool 40 meters from the cottage was fantastic with a perfect view over the landscape and you could probably see for 30-40 km. They had 5 dogs and our children really loved them and they followed you when you went for a walk in the cork farm. Theire is only A/C in the main living room in the cottage and not in the 2 bed rooms, but even though it was hot outside the bedrooms were still cool. The people at the farm were very friendly. Very recommended if you want a quite place to stay with beautiful nature.

A piece of heaven
This is a place not to disappoint. It was such a pleasant and peaceful time and we enjoyed our daily drives around. Philip and Monica where awesome. We had an amazing view from the re-modelled shepherd's cottage . You do need to bring in some food from the local grocery store in Redondo or just enjoy a wonderful meal at one of the authentic local restaurants. So much to see but some of our best time was sitting on the picnic table over-looking the valley and having a nice bottle wine from the farm. A true gem. Remo and Claudia (Canada)

Beautiful part of tipycal Alentejo, very friendly. Definetly recommend staying at Herdade Maroteira.
When looking for a few days escape we came across Herdade da Maroteira, Sheperds Cottage in Redondo. Really what we were looking for and we have spent 4 amazing days in Redondo. Truly recommend staying at Herdade da Maroteira! The Cottage was lovely, fully equipped and in a very peaceful area with amazing views. We enjoyed sitting outside every evening with a nice glass of Alentejo wine, listening only to the sounds of nature.
Everyone was very welcoming, Philip and his family, Sr Chico and Sr Inverno (Mr Winter as my children called him). Sr Inverno was around to help with anything we needed and was extremely kind, friendly. We did the jeep tour around the property and this is a "must"! If you ever visit the Herdade you must take on the jeep tour!! Fantastic!! Amazing views, 2hr around the property. We learned so much about Cork & Wines! Thank you Mr Inverno, for being so enthusiastic and caring!!
This property located in Redondo, is close to some very attractive sites, places to visit like Monsaraz; Evora; Elvas... make sure you visit them.
Sheperds Cottage was a beautiful place, located inside a traditional cork forest. At night, we could only see the stars and listen to sounds from nature. The pool was located in the property but it was a good 800m walk, which in July and August with high temperatures, was a little bit distant from the cottage but still lovely. I have been told that next year a new pool will exist just in front of the cottage, so if you have children will be a plus. The area is not fumigated so you have to expect to see the natural insects that will populate around the forest, we even managed to see some scorpions (which we were told we may see them during August). We all had a wonderful time (including the children aged 12 and 10) and we truly recommend staying at Redondo, Herdade da Maroteira, Till's Cottage.

Slice of heaven
Great way to spend four days/nights in Portugal, at this working cork farm/vineyard with welcoming hosts and staff, three dogs to escort us and serve as pets-in-waiting, and relaxation all around. The estate is centrally located among the key hill towns in this part of the Alentejo -- Evora, Monsaraz, Estromez and Elvas. They make for great half-day visits. But don't sell short the pleasures of the estate itself. Sample the wines. Take a jeep tour of the vast acreage. Enjoy the swimming pool. Chat with Phillip, his family and the whole team. And take their advice on where to eat and what to drink.
It was a great experience for our whole family, especially the city-raised boys (14 and 10).
