The Upstairs unit of Lawia'a Sea Lodge was very comfortable for our party of 5 adults in residence + 6 visitors on occasion for evenings at the ocean's edge and a few dinners. It was, a Magical time for all.
Special Thanks! to Jessa for taking care of us during our stay and a hearty Aloha! to all of the locals who befriended us.

The view is to die for from the lanai. What a beautiful bay! We had perfect weather the entire week! All 6 of us, young adults from 18-22, and parents, loved our stay.
Everything you need from the kitchen is available, although they could upgrade a few items, like the blender is almost dead, the dishwasher door goes to the ground, and another large pan would be great. Maybe some decent knives! Loved having kayaks and SUPs available. Great property managers who are on the property and work very hard to keep the card looking amazing. They are friendly and helpful! Rainbow, one of the neighbors, swims everyday with the spinner dolphins. She was great to chat with, and is an artist. If you meet her, ask to see her paintings. We bought 5!!! But unfortunately the dolphins alluded us, and we only saw them once.
The house is old, and needs some tender loving care, like the sliding doors, maybe new carpet, and cleaning or painting the doors. New sheets and bedding would be awesome. The newer upgraded bathroom is a plus!! Maybe do the 2nd bathroom also.
Unlike the other islands, we did not get many mosquito bites. There were few ants as well. 😄 Roosters, of course, were our alarm clocks. Loved our daily visits from the dogs on the property! Overall, we were very pleased with our stay and plan to return, as location is everything. Met Dave, one of the owners, and he was pleasant as can be! We are now back home, relaxed from our wonderful vacation, and look forward to our next visit.

My family just recently spent a week's vacation at the both the upstairs and downstairs at Lawai'a Sea Lodge. We had a total of 9 people between the two units, including three teenagers, with 6 of us upstairs and 3 of us downstairs. Lots of room in both units
Both kitchens had plenty of room to do all our cooking. The upstairs patio is where we spent most of our time. The patio has a great view of Kealakekua Bay including being able to see the local spinner dolphins daily in the Bay and the humpback whales that traveled past the Bay in the distance. Bring your binoculars for better viewing of both.
The best part of the units were the many tandem and single kayaks and sup boards with paddles and life jackets that were available for our group to use any time of day. You can snorkel directly from the "back yard" of Lawai'a Sea Lodge as long as the ocean is not too high.
We kayaked and snorkeled every day we were there. Manini Beach is only about a 5-minute walk away for beginner snorkelers.
The units were relatively quiet and the wave noise helps drown out any street noise. Since the house is on a one-way street, there was a only a little bit of traffic. But parking in front of he units can be tight at times.
The beds were all comfortable and the showers were fine with lots of towels for everyone. Overall, will definitely want to come back sometime soon to Lawai'a Sea Lodge.

Loved all the snorkeling. Even saw 2 octopuses and dolphins. So wonderful to be able to take out kayaks and SUPs whenever. The house was charming and the porch had an amazing view of the beautiful serene bay. Kitchen was well equipped and there were plenty of dishes! Jessa, on-site property care-taker, was a hoot and was so helpful and informative.

Perfectly situated on the bay with EZ access to the water if the waves are right. Multiple kayaks and plenty of accessoriies available on the property including life jackets, beach chairs, umbrellas, masks, snorkels. Beautiful views and breakfast/dinner setting on the lanai. The 6 of us worked perfectly with the rental. The downstairs unit shares the outside areas and we had up to 10 people there including kids which detracted alittle from the serenity but all in all very worth and would highly recommend.

This is a wonderful location. The views can’t be beat. Very nice having kayaks available. On site host is very nice. Be aware, it’s isolated, 15 minutes down the hill from closest restaurants or groceries. There are three different units on this property, upstairs, downstairs, and cottage next door. No hot tub on site even though listing still says it has one.

The location is stunning. You could not ask for a more perfect setting. Jessa, the on site property manager, was beyond gracious and truly made us feel like we were at home and part of the family. Our only regret was that we did not spend our entire Hawaiian vacation here. Every island and rental house after Big Island was a disapointment. We would return in a heartbeat.

If you want to get away from the bussle of Kona, awake to the sounds of the ocean mixed with birdsongs, see incredible sunsets while sipping your favorite drink, snorkel without crowds, or kayak out into a magical bay, this is the spot. It may not be as sunny but it is therefore much more lush and you really can't beat the laid back vibes.

Our family had a wonderful stay at the Lawai'a Sea Lodge! We made some excursions around the island, but home was our favorite. A beautiful home right on the water with kayaks and world-class snorkeling on a preserved bay, with a great host, sleeping with open windows to the sound of waves on the rocks. We hope to return. God bless you!

Upon arrival, we were met by our host, Jesse, she was so awesome & Informative. The views were so unreal we didn't want to leave the property, the crashing waves, we kayaked & snorkeled right out our back door & saw tons of fish & spinner dolphins. Our on property neighbors were great. We had a BBQ & invited Jesse & her family to join us & they even cooked & cleaned up for us, cannot ask for much more than that. I would highly recommend this place & we will defiantly come back! Debbie & Jeff-SLC, Utah

Fantastic stay.
House was built in 1935 and has kept that charm, but with updates which feel like you are vacationing in the 1970s (in a very positive way). No A/C, but it was cool enough at night that I needed a blanket. The kitchen has everything you need, including tons of spices from earlier guests. Don’t shop until you check out what is there. Shop at the KTA Superstore at the top of the hill in Kainaliu. They have everything you need and great poke as well.
Do not go anywhere else to go snorkeling, kayaking, to watch the sunset or go swimming; you won’t find anything better than in the backyard. The snorkeling is mind-blowing right at the mouth of the lagoon, don’t even waste the effort going another 100 yards.
The host, Jessie is super nice and accommodating. Be aware they the kayaks and access to the water is used by several units aside from the three on site (not a problem).
In summary we could not have enjoyed staying anywhere else more.

Well, we had breakfast with ocean view (25m to the sea), sun downer drinks and slept like babies…
The kitchen is well stocked, everything was clean, nice bathroom and shower…
We just loved it and would always come back!

What a great experience to spend a week at captain cook! The property manager, Jessa, is a true gem who made our stay a Hawaiian experience that none of us will soon forget!

We LOVED OUR stay here! The house is a little quirky, but very charming - we really felt like locals. We enjoyed the kayaks and snorkeling in the beautiful bay, which was fantastic! Waking up to spinner dolphins playing in the bay was an added bonus. Jenna and her daughter were so kind and friendly and brought us candles and helped us prepare for the freak storm that came through. Enjoyed the hot tub as well. The best part is the location - so beautiful and interesting history. We would love to come back and stay longer. Mahalo to our gracious hosts!

We loved every minute here. Jenna was super friendly, helpful and informative. Of the 3 places we stayed on the Big Island, this is definitely our favorite and we will be returning!

The upper cottage unit was amazing. We didn’t want to leave the beautiful views and instant access to the most amazing bay on the island. We kayaked with the dolphins, swam with the dolphins and kayaked over to the Captain Cook monument to snorkel this pristine cove. Our advice is to give up your morning of sleeping in to get out on the bay early. The winds are calmer and you can get out there before all the tour boats that start arriving between 9:30-10am. The on-site manager was a wealth of knowledge and made sure our stay was perfect. They provide everything you need to enjoy the ocean. For those of you who like me search reviews for mention of the bed quality I will say that the king and one queen were too firm for my bad back. We found the queen bed in the smallest back bedroom (that also had a twin bed in it) to be the most comfortable. We stayed in March and most nights we either had windows partly opened or just closed with ceiling fans on. In the afternoon/evening there was always a strong breeze thru the house coming off the ocean. So I am not sure how it is in Jun-Aug but we were just fine without A/C. We would definitely come back again to stay here!!

Best access to Kealakekua Bay. All the amenities to enjoy the water and the marine life. We swam with with turtles, dolphins, and whales. The dolphins every day!
Relaxed on the deck and enjoyed spectacular sunsets and the gentle ocean breezes all evening long.
It could not have been better, we were so satisfied with everything.

Great property with plenty of room for our group of 17. Enjoyed seeing spinner dolphins, whales and colorful fish. Children ranging in age from 2-13 were able to play in the water, snorkel, and hunt for shells. Would stay here again.

We had the pleasure of renting this property for 4 nights and I am very happy that we did. I had previously visited the Big Island but stayed on the other side so I knew we wanted to explore this side of the island on this visit. The location and amenities were perfect and beyond convenient. In all our trip included 5 adults, with only one couple. There was ample space, and we only rented the top portion of the house. The layout is a little different but still easy to access all of the spaces. The kitchen has everything that you need supply wise, and we spent our first day completing some food prep and just enjoying the property. The views are spectacular morning, noon and night!!!The property is conveniently located for all types of activity and if you rent this house you already will be staying at one of the best kayak and snorkeling spots on the island.

We really loved this place! The property manager and owner were both helpful, friendly, and ver accommodating . The kitchen had everything we needed as did the bedrooms and bathrooms. We were a family of 7 adults with an infant and the upstairs unit was just perfect. They even provided a pack n play! For the price, I’d suggest some updates to the beds and bedding, but other than that it was a lovely home. Be aware that you do share the property with two other units as well as with neighbors on both sides accessing the property to use the kayaks, boat launch, and tide pool. They neighbors weren’t supposed to linger, but they did. We’ll be back to enjoy this beautiful bay, home and area!

We flew from east coast and was late when we arrived. Lights were on for us and manager came next morning to check on us and give us helpful tips. Was a group from office and we took whole property. Old residence but was lulled to sleep with the wind and waves through the windows and screens. Walked out and entrance to bay there for kayaking and snorkeling with equipment in shed. Hot tub felt good. Captain Cook monument was insight and able to kayak to it. There were paper products etc. waiting for us. Staff was amazed I found it and couldn’t have been happier. Owners had book in each area with directions to restaurants (with menus), tourist sites, etc. Snorkeling was excellent at their site.

Family of 10 stayed for 3 nights to enjoy Kona side of the Big Island. View of Kealakekua Bay is spectacular, great location to explore that side of the island. Lots of rooms with well-appointed kitchen, but very stuffy inside and downstairs unit is quite dark. Getting into the bay is difficult with small children. Kayaks are shared with other properties, so privacy can be limited. The property manager gave lots of instructions, but there were still plenty of many-legged “visitors” indoors despite the care taken.

Our rental was the downstairs option (actually, more of under-the-house that had been converted into an apartment). It was dark, had very low ceilings with exposed pipes and wires (all painted). Some of the beams running across parts of the ceiling were so low that my 6-foot son-in-law kept hitting his head. The floor was painted concrete on which were laid rugs held down with duct tape. There were two bedrooms with two bathrooms. However, the bathrooms were side-by-side with a shared wall so kind of pointless. The showers are approx 2ft by 2ft and maybe 6ft high. We were informed upon arriving there were rat problems and were showed where the rat traps (non-killing) were under the kitchen counters. During our stay, twice there was a strong odor of death, and both times after complaining, the staff found a dead rat in the closets. They immediately removed the dead rats and sprayed liberally with Lysol deodorizer (which also was unpleasant).
The area outside with access to the ocean is great. The property manager works very hard and did her best to help with our concerns. We did get to see the upstairs apartment, and the difference between the two rentals is like night and day. Upstairs is very nice.

The location was ideal to get away from the crowds. We were a large family of 18 and found this house accomodated us all. The owners/managers were exceptional from flower arrangements made especially for our arrival and their willingness to meet our needs

we had a marvelous adventure! snorkling and kayaking right outside our rental, (kayaks provided, no additiional charge) we drove down the road for a beach experience, which was beautiful and fun! dolphins and whales in the bay, doing their thing. really a great location for a wonderful vacation. the host was so helpful and fun! the house was great, had all the ammenities we needed, plenty of room! i will definately be back with my family! mahalo for such a perfect fun and relaxing retreat!

our February week was warm and sunny with some big swells and wind. big waves crashing on the black lava beyond the green lawn outside the screen door was wild and primeval, nature doing its thing. we kayaked when the sea was more mild, dolphin and whales breathing in Kealakekua Bay near the boats startled us. Nights are dark, the shear dark undeveloped north wall of the bay keeps it feeling primitive and wild. the lower unit of the Lawai'a Sea Lodge house worked well for us. the property is well maintained by nice people. YES we will return next year. Mahalo for a relaxing yet exciting experience.

Fantastic place to kayak, snorkel and swim in Kealakekua Bay. We stayed in the cute, low-key cottage - perfect for a couple - with an incredible view right on the water from the patio or kitchen. Private, rocky launch for kayaks is the best (and perhaps only) way for travelers to kayak the bay individually. Great snorkeling in front of and north of the launch (in addition to paddling across to "tourist central" at the monument.) Lovely and relaxing environment, great manager. Not to be missed!

We stayed for 6 days and it is the best place, we ever saw at the Kona coast of Big Island.
10.0 / 10.0
We originally planned to stay here a week and then somewhere else on the Big Island for our last two days, but we failed to find anyplace else we would rather be! The kayak launch is so handy as well as just being able to wake up and snorkel with dolphins and explore the captain cook monument reef. Also did some spear fishing on the opposite side of the bay. But the dolphins were the highlight, we were very fortunate to have the opportunity to swim with the dolphins for 8 of our 9 days here. What a way to start your day! The place was perfect for our family of four with two older boys. We stayed in the downstairs with two big bedrooms, two bathrooms and 5 beds to choose from, not to mention a nice kitchen and an amazing view outside our bedroom each morning when I open my eyes. We explore almost every corner of the Big Island from this spot. Would definite recommend the property to anyone staying on the island.
8.0 / 10.0
I stayed 8 days during July 2014 at the groundfloor level with my two sons. It was the type of stay that we were looking for: in front of the ocean at the Kealakekua bay (natural reserve), free kayaks and snorkeling, key location in dead end street. The property Manager was really nice and helpful. There was plenty of room for the three of us (2 bedrooms with a total of 9 beds). However, we are all tall and hit our head several times on the ceiling. Limited intimity, no airco, no dishwasher, basic furnitures. Our priority was not comfort and we were living outside most of the time anyway, hence we give this overall a good rate.
