Booked just an hour or two before arrival but the room was clean and tidy. It's also very quite, bed was very comfortable so- everything for good night sleep. Breakfast was really nice and the staff very polite. Free parking is a big plus. Check in was quick and easy.

We have stayed at the Schmactenburg several times; this is our favorite hotel in Essen. Our dear friend lives in Essen and the hotel is literally 90 seconds from our friend's flat! The staff is amazing--Hielike (sp?) and the rest of the staff are both friendly and helpful. We have eaten at the restaurant twice and each time the food has been amazing!!! Our compliments to the chefs each time! The hotel has an old time feel and comfort with updated rooms and amenities! Can't imagine staying anywhere else in Essen!!!

The restaurant was excellent food was lovely. The staff were very helpful they even translated the menu for us. The room was very comfortable.

The breakfast was disappointing considering how good the meals were in the restaurant.

I think the management of the hotel should put a little touch on the reception.. Also the standby light of the TV in the bedroom is too bright after you put all the light in the room off (too disturbing)

A very nice hotel with personal touch. The people were very friendly and caring. I will come back if I have the chance. The room was clean and had a very good bed.

The location was ok, but I was in traffic jam quite often in the morning. I was heading to Messe Essen for an exhibition and traffic jam was not ideal.
