What a great location and the owner thought of everything! Great experience!

BHI is one of our favorite places, and “Shoes Off” was a great place to enjoy it from! This house has amazing views from almost every room in the house and its great porches. It’s an easy walk across the street to the beach, close to the BHI Club, and a few minutes to the market. Overall, a great place for our family to ring in the New Year!

So, hiccups happen and there’s not a single one of us who can say we’re perfect. And when I communicated our hiccups with Shoes Off’s property manager, they went to work and didn’t stop until everything was flipped rightside up again. In fact, they managed everything so well I absolutely can say BHI Services just raised the bar wayyy up there, and they did so with ease. That said, this was about my 15th year visiting the island, and there will be many, many more to come. Shoes Off stands out all on its own. The house is lovely and filled to the brim with all the things that make their home your home, inside & out. The views from this house are extraordinary, and this is one of my main goals when looking for my rental each year. And the well-thought out upper level deck space — open, covered, and screened — gives so many comfortable and thoroughly enjoyable options with sturdy Adirondack chairs & footrests and tables to rest your book on while you nap (because thats gonna happen). Oh, and the hammock... fuhget about it! Pure Heaven. Our week brought us plenty of rain, and except for the one or two sideways deluges, sitting outside under the covered decks watching the rain and listening to the ocean and treefrogs made it that much more magical. Yep, we’ll be back. 💗.

We had 6 adults, 2 kids and 1 infant staying here. Everyone had plenty of room and the beach was right across the street. Very comfortable, great showers and lots of towels were appreciated. We got a BHI club membership and it was 3 minutes away. Already talking about next year!

A great trip to Bald Head Island. I was worried about getting there with all our stuff but it went off without a hitch. Book your trams in advance! Easy for a family of 6. The property was perfect. Just the right mix of modern and nice but with a laid back “shoes off” coastal vibe. Accommodations were great. The rooms and the living area and the kitchen were all excellent. I would give this property my highest recommendation.

This was our second trip to BHI and we were so excited to share it with our families for the first time. Check in was at 4pm. We arrived to the house around 1:30pm to leave our luggage under the house and start exploring like it said we could. The cleaning company was at the house and said it was “disgusting.” We left our things and used the golf carts to explore and grab lunch (which we greatly appreciated). When we returned at 4:15pm, there were approximately 6 people from the cleaning company still cleaning and requested 15 more minutes. We didn’t get in the house until after 4:30pm and then didn’t have any toilet paper which said would be provided so someone from the company had to bring it back. The entire stay you smelled dog urine in the house (particularly the upstairs rug and single chair foot stool). The listing said no pets so we were surprised and frustrated to know a dog had been there. There was dog hair everywhere on the floors and bedroom futon. Dog poop was also everywhere surrounding the yard of the house. It didn’t feel clean for us let alone our baby and toddler. Food had exploded in the microwave and left there, smelling horrible, which we had to clean ourselves. The upstairs bathroom shower door was broken so we couldn’t use that shower during the stay. Otherwise the house was located in a great spot (across the street from beach access) and literally had the most amazing view of the sunset. I hate this was our families’ first experience. We want to come back but will be looking for another home, unfortunately.

This property is top notch. The views, the location, the decks, the bikes, and all the other wonderful amenities make for a fantastic vacation. Will absolutely stay here again.

Great Stay

Spent a wonderful week at Steve's beautiful home. Love the views, beach access, and location on island the most. House was very accommodating, as was Steve's attentiveness to our enjoyment. Look forward to future visits to Shoes Off!

This is a classic beach house with five star views all day long. We had 4 adults and 6 children on our vacation and we fit great. The beds are comfy, we had access to both clubs, every single one of us had a bike. Everything we would have ever needed we had. ❤️❤️ Love it!

Loved our stay here...great location, awesome view, nice comfortable layout, well stocked kitchen, 2 golf carts, lots of bikes, super responsive owner interactions, definitely hope to come again soon!! Thank you!

After a 15 year absence from Bald Head Island, we decided to return with our teenage children and had a wonderful experience at this home. We fell in love with the island and the home, filling it with laughter and memories. Plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms, bikes were great and the golf cart worked perfectly getting us around the island. The owner was responsive and very accommodating. Highly recommended.

We have travelled to BHI for years, renting on various parts of the island. This home is in a fantastic location with direct views of the ocean and sunsets over the water. Very close to the BHI club. Steve goes out of his way to make the stay comfortable and provides everything (much more than most rentals) needed for fun inside and outside of the house, including Apple TV, two golf carts, cooking supplies, bikes, umbrellas, beach cart, and chairs. Also, rental comes with temporary memberships to both clubs. Perfect home for two families.

3 stars The home is across the street from the beach. However, it is NOT 38 steps from the beach. It is maybe 38 steps from the end of the drive way to the very beginning of the beach access path. Wifi in the house is awful except in the main living room. It definitely did not reach the beach. And while its nice to say things like "unplug, don't worry about internet", this is 2017 and you need the internet, even on vacation. As for the condition of the house, it was okay, but a bit run down. The exterior paint was in need of repair and the interior paint could use some work too (we actually heard a couple drive by in their golf cart and comment on how the house needed to be painted). There were areas of water damage on the ceiling and mildew in lots of spots. Lots doors stuck or didn't close properly, windows would open but not close. I literally had to repair the screen on one door because, frankly it was embarrassing to watch it flap in the breeze. The furniture was just okay in most every room, however, the beds in the masters were actually not bad, except for the dirty sheets (which I blame on the cleaners, not the owner). Basically, you can tell that this is a rental. It does not feel like the kind of house that someone lovingly takes care of. Also note that the golf carts are not that great, they work fine and it's nice not to have to rent one, but you'll be driving around in the equivalent of 90s Ford Escorts. One of the keys literally crumbled when we tried to start one cart (the owner did not respond to our request for help on this, luckily we found a spare key that worked). If it rains, there is not enough plastic to cover the 6 person cart and there was no plastic for the 4 person cart, so you'll get wet if you need to leave the house. The visitors that we had on a daily basis in the form of cockroaches, were a nice touch. Hope we didn't unwittingly rip any of them away from their family by accidentally taking them home in our bags.

Great location for beach and pool access. Steve has equipped the house well. There are bikes, boogie boards, beach chairs etc. Ample porch space, hammock plus screened in dining area for eating al fresco. The sunsets will blow your mind. Its perfect vacation rental for two families.

Shoes Off is an absolutely amazing home. It has everything you could possibly need for a perfect vacation. Not only are the views amazing, but the location on the island is great too. The owner, Steve, goes above and beyond to make sure you have everything you need and makes your stay important to him. All you need you do is bring your flip-flops and sunglasses! I cannot recommend this home enough!
