I spent a wonderful weekend at Recanto da Mata. I am a birdwatcher, and the area around Sao Francisco de Paula is one of the best in southern Brazil. It is a beautiful area with great birds. The hotel is set in a lovely patch of forest, where the owner, Roberto, has set out some trails. There are other nice areas to watch and see wildlife within walking distance of the hotel, plus others a bit further afield. Roberto is very friendly and helpful, and also happens to be an expert on the birds of the area. He leads very reasonably priced guided birding trips in the area, and his company and expertise were much appreciated. He speaks little English and I speak little Portuguese, but we were able to communicate well and I enjoyed his company. I am already making plans for a second trip soon. I see this being a place I will visit regularly.

I liked everything. Roberto looks after his guests, and I felt that he would have been ready to sort out any problems if they had occurred.
