Walking distance to restaurants, nice backyard setting for a glass of wine, and felt so welcoming overall with sweet touches like fresh flowers and fruit.

We got to meet the owners, and they were super kind people! The rooms we stayed in were very comfortable and clean. The house was very interesting and fun to explore - it's not every day that we can stay in a 125 year old house!! We had a great time, and would definitely stay here again!

This is a true B&B. We had a homemade big breakfast every morning and our hosts were very friendly. It was easily walkable to the downtown area. I highly recommend staying here.

Nice curb appeal and front porch. Room was very spacious. Lighting is poor, need to have more lamps or stronger bulbs. Bathroom lighting was really bad! Bathroom floors are very noisey and the sink didn't drain properly. Since we were visiting vineyards, it would have been nice to have a few wine glasses in our room. We ended up helping ourselves to the dining room curio cabinet which felt uncomfortable but we were thirsty! Host was very hospitable and the food was very good. Mike recommended several places for us to visit and gave us history on the area.

Was a wonderful place to stay. Recommend it. Only negative is that bed in West sweet is too close to wall. Room should be rearrange to allow access to bed from both sides of bed.

We stayed in this 125 year old house, and everything was great! Maggie is a great cook, and we enjoyed a hot breakfast each morning, with homemade waffles the second day! Only one block from Main Street. The bed was very comfy, and we basically had the whole house to ourselves. We would definitely stay here again!

My wife and I enjoyed our Ten year Anniversary. Home owner welcomed us by having us stay in the bigger room. Breakfast was amazing. Walking distance to the stores. I highly recommend this place.

Our hosts were very polite and gracious. Nice folks. Breakfast was OK. That being said, there is a lot wrong with this B&B: 1. Landscaping needs work. Street-side bushes were overgrown to the extent you could not exit your vehicle from that side. 2. West Wing Suite: - Who puts a bathroom light switch over a hot tub? Is that even to code? - Two lamps in the master bath didn't provide enough useful light to use the mirror. - WiFi keeps dropping and you have to go halfway downstairs before your device will find the router. Upstairs needs a repeater. - Not sure what was wrong with the electrical, but my iPhone would not charge in the master bedroom with a known good iPhone cord and adapter. I had to charge it in my car. - There should be a printed cable channel guide in the room. Without it, you literally channel surf to figure out what's on each channel. - There is a floor cover board going into the master bedroom. This needs to have NEGATIVE EDGES. Tripped twice going between rooms. - Master bedroom needs reconfiguration to put the bed in the CENTER of the room, not against the far side wall. At night, I had to crawl in and out of bed at the foot and over a storage chest used for linens. And the ceiling pitch drops lower over that side, so I couldn't stand fully up without banging my head on the ceiling. - The room should be checked daily for replenishing sugar, coffee and replacing used dishes. Sugar in room bowl had lumps, meaning whoever last stayed there dipped a wet spoon into the sugar. We took our dishes from the first night down, but none were replaced. - The room has a refrigerator. How hard would it be to keep single-use creamer pods there? Room needs extensive cleaning (mold around shower, dirt stuck to ceiling where air vent blows). If not for the genuine hospitality afforded us by our hosts, I would have given this B&B a "1" rating.

Charming home on a quiet street, but a very short walk to Main Street. The West Suite was perfect for us, and very nicely furnished. Very nice hosts without being intrusive. The breakfast each morning was delicious! We would happily stay here again.

Charming old house.
We found the apartment to be charming, in a semi-period way. We were disappointed to find that the pastries left out for us were well past their prime. We discarded them all. Some of the fruit was starting to go bad. However, the Keurig coffee maker did work well. The whirlpool tub was the star of the show. The thing we liked least was the odd placement of the bed, due to it being placed with one side next to a wall, it makes it hard for the person on that side to get up to use the bathroom without disturbing the other. The bed was fairly comfortable however. Please advise Mr. Gillespie that we have misplaced a set of keys, on the ring is a Fiat key/fob/remote, and a small red fabric bag which contains a CPR mask. We have searched our bags to no avail....please ask him to give them to you if found. Thank you! As with previous visits to Fredericksburg, the services of Gastehaus Schmidt were top notch, no complaints. Sincerely, Daniel and Jeannette M.

Worst B&B Experience in Our Lives
This booking was deceptive from the start. This property does not look like the pictures and locals can't remember the front of the house looking like it is shown in the very 1st picture of the listing. The interior pictures are taken using lenses that distort the perspective and size of all of the rooms. We always stay in a B&B when we travel. This is our first bad experience. Are you curious why there are only 2 reviews since 8/2019? Either the owners or property managers remove any which are unfavorable or guests just do not leave feedback because it is unfavorable. If this review is removed, I will make sure I post it on Google, Yelp, and post in the local newspaper The first night we were there, we had to put Mentholatum in our nostrils to be able to sleep because while we were out the owners fried salmon croquets or something that smelled equally as disgusting and must have burned the grease. The house reeked of this smell the 5 days we were there. Our towels smelled of sour laundry and we had to go to Wal-Mart and buy towels for bathing during our stay. There was no soap or shampoo in our room, but 4 small 1/4oz containers of Conditioner and 2 containers of lotion. I was looking forward to using the advertised Whirlpool tub. I ran my bath water before getting in. When I turned the jets on, there was this nasty scum that started spewing from the system and floating on the water. I showered this trip. With all going on in the world, we look forward to watching local broadcast news. Although they had Roku TVs, there is no local programming available. I understood that breakfast would be in our room. Captain Crunch and Raisin Bran Cereal cups and Little Debbie cakes is a sad excuse for innkeepers claiming to offer a Bed & Breakfast. Breakfast at a B&B is usually the highlight of a B&B experience. Quite a disappointment. This trip was a gift from my brother and his family so I did not feel I had the authority to complain. Not once in our 4 night and 5 day stay did the host/hostess ask us if we needed anything or if they could do anything for us. I have made many wonderful friends with hosts and hostesses over the years. Some we have become close enough with to travel together. Others we exchange Christmas Cards and have for years. There are still others we continue to stay at the same B&B and same room every year when we attend different events. It takes such little effort to make guests feel special when they are paying this much for lodging. In my opinion, this is a $65 - $85 a night stay. We paid over twice this. BEWARE!

Wonderful weekend
We spent the weekend here and had a wonderful time. The West suite was so nice with a separate sitting area. After a hot day browsing shops on Main Street we were hot and tired and the whirlpool was so relaxing. Our hosts treated us like family and the breakfasts were wonderful. I highly recommend the Gillespie house if you are wanting a getaway from your everyday life.

note from future self... do not stay here
Visitor parking is on the road in front of the house. If you're comfortable parking your high value asset on the street, no worries. If you're not, you may have reason to not stay here. The parking arrangement information was not disclosed in the description. Personally, I prefer not parking my vehicles on the street.
NO hot breakfast. My criteria when searching for a B&B were, in town, and hot breakfast served each morning. I like a hot breakfast while traveling. Nothing fancy. Eggs, bacon, coffee, maybe some fruit. So, I specifically searched for “hot breakfast served” as my 2nd major criteria, and only five placed showed up. When we arrived around on a Friday evening at 7 PM, the owner met us at the door. I had my mask on out of respect, he did not. We shook hands and exchanged pleasantries. I could smell cooked food coming from the kitchen. It prompted me to ask him if there were any special instructions for breakfast the next morning. He said “oh, breakfast is already in your room”. I said, “really, how does that work? You bring it up in the morning?”. He said “no, it's a cold breakfast. There is fruit, and cereals, and breakfast bars in your room and mild in the refrigerator”. I said “no hot breakfast from the kitchen, at the table?”. He looked at me kind of surprised I was challenging him, and I could tell he could see I was showing signs of surprised disappointment. He said “well no, because of the virus we're not serving breakfast”. I said “ok, well whatever you're cooking now sure smells good”. I was already starting to feel uneasy and we weren't there 2 minutes. And knowing he didn't seem to care about “the virus” with no mask on while shaking hands, and the kitchen obviously was in working order just rubbed me the wrong way. Now this was a topic of discussion when wifey and I got to the room. We quickly got over it, and just simply decided to eat breakfast out Saturday morning. No big deal. But…. it really did piss me off that it was NOT disclosed in the description that there was no hot breakfast… because of the virus. If it had been disclosed, I would have understood. No big deal.
Not clean per “hotel standards”. I don't have super high standards, but my wife does. She was not happy. She did not think the bathroom, toilet and shower were very clean. Found a single piece of fruit loop cereal on the rim of the toilet bowl when I lifted the seat. How does that get missed? It gets missed because someone didn't wipe down the rim of the toilet bowl. Also, she would not walk around the room barefoot. Fortunately, we tried to stay out of the room as much as possible. Also, found a large dead roach, legs up, near the mini fridge. Dead is better than live, I suppose. I quickly kicked it under the fridge before wifey saw it.
I feel like we were hustled on the room choice. They offer two suites. East Suite, and West Suite. The West Suite is larger, thus costs more per night. The website indicated the East Suite was unavailable for the dates I wanted. Well guess what? Upon arrival and through our stay, no one was in the East Suite. The door to the East Suite was open the entire time we were there. I was able to look around the inside of the East Suite to determine if something was wrong with it such that the owner wouldn't want anyone to stay in it. The AC was fine, the water was running, toilet was good, lights worked, etc. This is why I feel like we were hustled on the room choice.
The bedroom is not arranged well. There is a TV in the bedroom. However, the TV is precisely 90 degrees from the headboard of the bed, in the corner, to the left. Therefore, if you want to watch TV, you literally have to turn your head entirely to the left to see it. Or, you can prop your pillow up against the wall on the left side of the bed to watch TV. There is a small couch in the bedroom. It too is at a 90 degree viewing angle to the TV. Just a minor inconvenience, but I was irritated by this point and the TV thing just was another reason to be irritated at things that seemed to be obviously resolvable.
Bottom line. If I had read this review from my future self, I would have kept looking for another place to stay.
Bottom Bottom line. I am a grateful person and was happy to get away with my wife for the weekend to enjoy good food, live music, beautiful scenery, and a day hike at Enchanted Rock. This trip was never going to be about the B&B experience. So the above did not define our weekend. But it will be a running joke on me for a while because my wife left it to me to pick and book the place we'd be staying. Jokes on her I guess.

Charming home; great location
The West Suite was perfect for my grown daughter and I to enjoy Fredericksburg, so each of us could have our own sleeping space. Breakfast items included fresh berries which was a plus. It's an easy walk to Main Street from the house, another plus! One day we enjoyed our takeout lunch on a table on the home's back patio-- would love to visit again when everything is blooming!

Not for publication
We enjoyed our suite, the building, location, and breakfast and coffee. One advice is to fix the window closest to the bathroom by the queen bed. It was very windy Friday night, which made the window pane rattle all night, and disturbed my sleep. Seems like hopefully an easy fix!

Wonderful stay
We loved staying in this B&B. We enjoyed our conversations with the couple who owned the property. The location was great and the town was very interesting. The Gillespie House made our visit to Texas very enjoyable.

Comfortable bed
Fabulous location near Hondo’s and Crossroads. The area was very nice for morning walks. Bed and linens were great. Shower was leaking on the hardwood floor and the bathroom ceiling needed repairs. The blinds on the skylights also need some TLC. All in all it was a very comfortable space and we would return.

Was disappointed
Let me start with the positive. The location was GREAT! The hosts were very good too and extremely nice. I was extremely disappointed in the breakfast. It was literally just boxed cereal, milk, and like granola bars. We stayed two nights, so naturally we would assume they would refill after the first night, but they did not. Additionally, one of the nights we came home and there was dog poop on the carpet right next to our room. Some of the lighting in our room did not work and the shower did not look the cleanest. The photos make it look like the greenery is gorgeous, but there was sadly none.

Great Stay
Really enjoyed our stay. Location was close in town. Room and furnishings were nice. Were making due the best possible for breakfast in the age of COVID. Owners were great. Had one issue with hot water first morning and it was minor and resolved within minutes. Friendly and knowledgeable about town with lots of great tips. Top notch service all around.

The Great Gillespie
This little gem of a bed and breakfast was thoroughly enjoyed for its location, comfort, and yummy breakfast. The owners, Mike and Maggie, are laid-back owners who have thoughtfully provided the amenities necessary for a comfortable and quiet stay. We stayed in the west room with a king bed and oversized whirlpool tub, and loved the sun-filled room with skylights and quaint spaces. A mini frig/freezer and coffee maker were provided, along with TV and Wi-Fi. The rooms are up a fairly steep wooden staircase which has a handrail and wall for support. Antiques and beautiful art are displayed all around this lovely, history-filled home, and the porches and outdoor gardens provide spaces for rest, reading, and retreat. Would definitely return to The Gillespie House in the future! The Wildflower 5K, Herb Farm, and Hondo’s were easily within walking distance, and the car could be parked in front of the bed and breakfast and not used very often! Thanks to the Gillespies for a cozy stay.

Very good location, sweet couple that owns it, and the West suite was everything we wanted.
Close to Main Street but just far enough to be nice and quiet. The owners are very nice and are around enough to say hi and talk at breakfast. Room was clean and spacious.
