HISTORY
George Finlay (1799-1875) the famous Scottish historian was the grandson of the founder of the trading company ‘James Finlay & Co ‘.
In 1823, he sailed to Greece to fight in its War of Independence from the Ottomans, serving initially on board the ‘Karteria’ (‘Perseverance’) the first steam warship used in war with Captain Frank Hastings. In his involvement with the Greek struggle he worked closely with, and became a friend of, Lord Byron in the last months of the poet’s life.
In early 1825 Finlay first set up house on Aegina, the first capital of the Greek estate, buying a landed farm estate which he named ‘The Red Castle’ (KOKKINO KASTRO), establishing his permanent roots in Greece, developing a field of barley for his horse and stocking his garden with pear and olive trees.
For the remainder of the conflict, Finlay, dedicated himself to easing the plight of the refugees on Aegina.
Finlay never wavered in his desire to serve the Greek people by pressing for financial stability and a government adapted to their needs and historical background.
Finlay wrote many books about the history of the Greek people from the Roman times up to his time among which the most known is the history of the Greek revolution of independence from the Turkish yoke in 1821, also he was the official Athens correspondent of the Times newspaper from 1864 to 1874.
The Red Castle was subsequently purchased by Alexandros Mavrocordatos the most eminent political personality in the War of Independence.
Alexandros Mavrocordatos participated in almost all the constitutional assemblies that took place during the War of Independence (1821-1827) and contributed to the syntax of the first constitution of the new Greek State, later on as Prime Minister in the reigning of King Otto he worked very hard to promote democracy against the monarchy regime of the time.
Alexandros Mavrocordatos spent the last 5 years of his life in the Red Castle in Aegina where he died in 1865.
After his death Red Castle passed to other famous families of Greece (families of Soutsou and Baltatsi and Melas)

Beautiful property with spacious accommodation, great amenities, and a fantastic host. Guests enjoyed the comfortable cottages, amazing swimming pool, and lovely location.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Kokkino Kastro. The properties are both unique and quirky and, if a little dated, are all fully equipped and comfortable with very efficient air conditioning! The estate is well situated on the edge of Aegina Town with glorious views, privacy and easy access to shops and restaurants. We made full use of the massive pool and tennis court and table tennis when it eventually cooled down.
Andreas and his staff, particularly Manos, were very accommodating and couldn’t have been more helpful.
I very much recommend the property for those who want good facilities, space, privacy yet within walking distance of a lively town with numerous good eating places, supermarkets etc and links to both the main land and other nearby islands. Steve

Have to start with Andreas the owner! Amazing guy, made us feel so welcome and met us at the port to show us the way to the house.
Place is stunning, pool is huge and clean, plenty of sunbeds. Chilled water is refilled pretty much daily, each unit is amazing and has aircon. A 15 min or so stroll to the harbour if you want to eat out! There were 14 of us and each couple family had their own space/place which was great. Aegina is a great island, mainly locals so prices are good.
Andreas recommended a day boat trip with Croatia, amazing day on the boat - various stops to swim/snorkel and lunch in a nice harbour. All in all an amazing week - thank you Andreas!!!

Amazing character property with huge pool and lovely outdoor space.
The owner Andreas met us at the ferry terminal and helped transport luggage and show us where the property was.
Location was brilliant as it was only a 20 minute walk into main town with loads of lovely restaurants and shops.

This was the verdict of our family, 17 of us ranging in age from 12 to 80. It's a beautiful site with its fig and pistachio trees, and views across the island to the sea. Andreas is the perfect host and couldn't do enough to make our stay memorable. Everything we needed was available. The cottages were extremely comfortable, and the swimming pool was amazing. Thank you Andreas.

We spent a great week at Kokkino Kastro.
The whole complex has a lot of charm, enough space and everything important to spend a great vacation with family or friends.
Andreas is a great host and always there when you need him.
We also got great tips from him for excursions and restaurants.
We were 9 people and felt very comfortable in every way at Kokkino Kastro.
The large kitchen area with covered terrace and barbecue area in the middle of the complex was always the focal point for all of us.
Anytime again is our feedback and big thanks to Andreas and his staff.

Splendid Stay at Kokkino Kastro
We stayed at the Kokkino Kastro Estate the last week in September. We were a group of 16 friends and used all rooms and facilities at the estate. The place is really beautiful with all the pistaccio and olive trees. We had an absolutely amazing week with still very warm weather. We enjoyed spending a lot of time at the estate, played table tennis, basketball and tennis, and enjoyed the huge pool and the beautiful views from the windmill tower. We also explored the island by bicycle and car, and we did a sailing trip on one of the days. Andreas helped us with any requests and was a very kind and generous host. We can definitely recommend the place!!

My Fabulous Birthday holiday on Aegina
We loved our stay. There were 16 of us staying on the estate celebrating my 70th birthday and the place was fabulous. Lovely accommodation and fantastic location. We wandered over the estate picking and eating figs, grapes, limes and pistachios and olives prepared by Andreas the owner. Andreas was more than helpful, picking us up from the ferry and ensuring everything was perfect. We invited him to my party and he was a delightful guest and very pleased by the invitation. Such a lovely man and extraordinarily kind. We cannot recommend his estate or him highly enough. We had our birthday lunch for 19 catered by Nontas and it was superb. If you are looking for an amazing place to take family or friends for a holiday a week at Kokkino Kastro on Aegina is a must. The added bonus is it is easy fast and inexpensive to get there from Athens. All 16 of us had the best time and were sad to leave... oh and the shopping in Aegina town was great too ❤️👍💋

Wonderful place with Seaview
A fantastic place in an ancient environment. High level of privacy and a great property manager (owner). Andreas was always available and helped us by correcting any shortcomings of equipment or non working items at the property.
Especially outdoor kitchen, barbecue area and the pool area added value to our stay.
Kokkino Kastro is very popular which shows and reveals signs on the property. Another refurbishment is getting closer in order to keep the property in shape and style.

We love Aigena
We have just returned from a two week stay at Kokkino Kastro and we had an absolutely fabulous time. Our party consisted of 16 people from the age of 11 -83. Even before we arrived Andreas was making us feel welcomed and excited about our holiday with his quick responses to our emails and questions. We were met at the port by Andreas and he transported my mom and myself to the villa where we were met with an amazing welcome. Andreas and his family had prepared an amazing lunch for us, which was very appreciated after a long day traveling. We were then given a tour of the villa and any instructions we needed. The first thing we all did was to jump into the amazing pool for a much needed cool off. Our stay varied from days relaxing in the villa to days out to the local beaches and a few boat trips. The beaches with crystal clear water were amazing and we enjoyed some snorkeling. Everyone we encountered was very friendly and helpful and I highly recommend Aigena as a holiday destination and Kokkino Kastro as the place to stay.

breathtakingly beautiful
We loved every moment of our stay at Kokkino Kastro. The Greek hospitality of Andreas and his wife Diane made us feel like home from the very first moment we met. The entire estate is beautifully maintained, with flowers and fruit trees in full bloom. As a mixed group of couples and singles, everyone had their private bed and bathrooms. At the same time, we enjoyed the many leisure facilities and had some lovely barbecues. We highly recommend a trip to Kokkino Kastro and the beautiful island of Aegina for anyone who loves the sun, the sea, great food and lovely people! Thank you for an unforgettable stay!

Heartwarming welcome
I have stayed in Kokkino Kastro for ten days with my children and grandchildren and their friends. I am 84 years old.
Because I can not see well, and walking is not easy for me either, Andreas came to pick me up in the harbour with his car. When we arrived at Kokkino Kastro, he gave the car keys to my son, so that he could drive me to a restaurant or to the beach, "Go show your father the beautiful island of Aegina'" , he joked "the car is yoursa more generous host is hardly to imagine.
My walking improved a lot by the way thanks to beautiful Fotini, who came every day to exercise with me in the swimming pool.
Although our group was quite big, (14 people) and I enjoyed every minute of talking laughing and having fun with my children, grand children and their friends, it was not hard at all for me to find a place to be on my own, as the terrace of my luxurious house was really peaceful surrounded by olive and
lemon trees, there were figs growing there too.
I enjoyed every minute of my stay in this beautiful place, and can not say enough thank you to Andreas and his wife Diana, my swimming instructor Fotini and my dear children for this fantastic holiday.

Everything you need!
When I arrived the first thing I noticed was the hospitality of the owner (Andreas). He told me that I could ask him everything that I wanted to know at every moment of the day or night and also invited us to eat some traditional home-made Greek food at his place.
The temperature at the moment was too hot for me so all I wanted was to cool down. Andreas guided us to our rooms explained globally how everything worked (also the air-conditioning :-)). It was amazing to see how big the area surfscholen was. Everything you need on a relaxing vacation (even lemon trees).
Would definitely come back to Kokkino Castro!

Truly a SUPERB place to be!
I stayed in many resorts all over the world, and right now Kokkino Kastro ends up in my favorite TOP 3! The location, the (Olympic!) pool, the comfort, the serenity, the beds, the kitchen, the wi-fi, all those things are served and brought to you in an upperclass style, everything with the warm and intellectual hospitality of Andreas and his wife Diana. Two perfect weeks that I and my 2 children will never forget! (T.Wesselo, Rotterdam, Holland)

I found the place for my wedding!
This place is amazing!
So spacious but so intimate.
So organic and earthy but so luxurious.
So welcoming but so free.
I have asked my girl and can not wait to have my wedding here!
The dance floor, the tables around the pool...a party it will be.... with all my closest friends waking up in the morning for the best sun rise ever from the windmill. I am truly grateful that i have found a place like this.

Great pool, gracious hosts and wonderful views
Kokkino Kastro is wonderful place to stay. The estate contains a number of different places to stay which was perfect for our group of two families. The main suites were luxurious with comfortable beds and kitchen facilities and the children loved their rooms in the tower.
There was also a large kitchen for us all to use near the pool which was really well equipped and led onto a lovely covered terrace. Great for easy meals, lazy times and playing cards.
The pool was magnificent - huge, warm and well supplied with loungers. The view across the pistachio and olive trees to the sea was lovely.
The family were very welcoming as were their two Alsations Rosa and Finlay. Despite being a little nervous of them at the beginning we all soon realised how friendly they were and my seven year old daughter cried when we had to leave them!
I would recommend this location to anyone who wants to visit a lovely island, close to Athens with plenty of places to visit.

Unforgettable Paradise!
Kokkino Kastro is in one word Paradise.
Best place ever for a group of friends (there are several houses on the property, so you can have your own privacy) to cach up and spend unforgettable times. Once you are here, you will not leave the place, it's magic.
A very large swimming pool, with possibility for private water aerobic and even yoga lessons, a wonderful kitchen and BBQ place, luxury, freedom and a heart warming host.
Would recommend highly!
