About this apartment rental

Our comfortable and clean apartment is located in the small town of Canico, just 10km east of Funchal & about 10km from the airport making this apartment ideally situated on the island. The apartment is within easy access to the motorway giving you the ideal base to explore the beautiful island of Madeira.

The lounge/dining room is very spacious & has a small balcony with views of the ocean and the coastal resort of Canico de Baixo a further 2km away. In the lounge area there is satellite TV , free WiFi, radio player, dining table (extendable). The master bedroom has a TV, DVD player, double bed, bedside tables, fitted wardrobes, dressing table along with an ensuite bathroom with shower unit, sink and toilet.

The second bedroom has twin beds, bedside table and fitted wardrobes. The apartment has 2 bathrooms, one ensuite with the double room and the other is fitted with a bath/shower, bidet, sink and toilet. The apartment also provides a travel cot in case guests require one for their baby. The kitchen is spacious, with a new washing machine, fridge/freezer, microwave, hob/oven, extractor fan, coffee machine, kettle, toaster, dining table and cutlery.

Golf Information: Golfers will find two superb golf courses within easy reach, 15 minutes by car - the 18-hole championship Palheiro golf course and the 27-hole Santa da Serra golf course [also known as Campo de Golfe part of the PGA European Tour] is 13km away and has spectacular views. A 3rd course is under construction 45 mins drive to the west at Prazeres and a 4th is planned at São Vicente.

Hiking & Walking : With its wide open spaces and extensive coastline Madeira is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts year-round, and there are countless activities that can be enjoyed either individually or as part of a group. Canico is an excellent location from where one can hike and walk the islands amazing levada irrigation system spanning 2,500 kilometres, which meander round the mountains.

Funchal - The Capital City: Funchal is not only the capital, but also the heart of Madeira and home to many of the islanders. This makes it a busy, chic, cosmopolitan and fun city, full of shops, bars, cafes and a great variety of restaurants and entertainment. The natural magnet for visitors is the extensive seafront, Avenida do Mar. At one end is the marina and harbour, the departure point for boat trips around the island. Inland is the historic centre, a series of graceful streets lined with shops, museums and gardens.

Please note we rely on a friend who lives in Canico to hand over the keys and shows you around our apartment upon your arrival. For that reason the latest arrival time in Madeira is 22:00 (10:00pm) in the evening. Arrivals after this time cannot be arranged and you would have to source alternative accommodation for the first night until the following morning when our friend could then hand over the keys.

The apartment is well located for those who explore locally and across the whole island. Handily, the flat comes with an underground parking spot, although I would recommend using a smaller sized car if possible - as the parking and driving in and out of the garage can be quite tight & difficult to manoeuvre. We were using a Hyundai Ioniq rental which is quite a large car and contributed to the challenge. The apartment itself is very spacious and we found it to have all that you would need for a 2 week trip. Just keep in mind that as described in the listing, it's a budget apartment and therefore to expect compromises with regards to the quality & modernness of some of the amenities. We found that everything we needed was acceptable. The host (Roger) is very communicative and helpful in setting expectations to have a smooth check in & out process. This is really useful, given that as stated in the listing, the host is unable to be present himself and relies on local friends. Thanks Roger & friends. We enjoyed our stay and would strongly recommend considering this great value apartment, especially if like us, you'd prefer to spend more of your money on experiencing the island and all that it has to offer.

Apartment was exactly what we needed. Great location - perfect base to get anywhere, just a few minutes drive and you are on the rápido. It was very clean, spacious and had great facilities including washing machine ideal when having kids in tow.

Thanks for the nice stay. Communication upfront has been perfect. Check in was good and easy. Everything needed is available in the appartement for a good stay. Canico is lovely and the bakery nearby has very good food and coffee. Thanks again to the host and his partner on site, all very well done.

We really enjoyed our stay-loved the village and felt it was very Portuguese and non-touristy but had good facilities (supermarkets, bars, restaurants etc) we did a lot of walking and although the weather was mixed we enjoyed it very much and would happily return.

This was the first time I had visited Madeira and I must say from beginning to end my experience was super good! We arrived in Madeira and drove to what we thought was the location of the apartment. We soon figured out that we were in the wrong place and so decided to call the owner of the apartment. An older guy picked up (Roger’s dad). He was the sweetest- he wasn’t expecting us in Madeira this month, he thought it was for next month. I was as confused as he was. why would he think that as I had booked for April (or so I thought). So I checked the booking whilst sat on the roadside-and my heart sank when I saw, I had for some reason, and without realising booked for the complete wrong month! What was I going to do at this point?! I was full on panicking. I then speak to Roger’s dad again who tells me he will get the keys for the apartment so that we can enjoy our stay. After some time had passed we received the keys to the apartment and were taken up and shown around. From beginning to the end customer service from both Roger and his dad was to the highest of standard. They were in all their right to refuse us to stay because the fault was ours but they did their best to ensure that we were well looked after by Tony and his wife who cooks amazing food By the way at the cafe under the apartment. Roger and his dad orchestrated our looking after even though they weren’t on the island. Their attention to detail is superior. The apartment is spacious, well looked after, clean and very well equipped. You couldn’t ask for anymore, it feels like being in your own home. We definitely would recommend this well situated apartment to everyone. There are shops within walking distance and you get underground parking for your car. Thank you so much Roger and your dad for allowing us to stay in your beautiful apartment.

The perfect stay on a beautiful island

I've most recently stayed in this wonderful flat in Caniço in December 2018 and it was great. It's perfectly situated in the central of Caniço, it's a 1 minute walk to the cafe or supermarket, 4 minute walk to a restaurant or the nearest shopping centre which has everything Funchal has. If you fancy going into Funchal the bus stop is just a 1 minute walk away from outside the building. I've stayed in this flat nine times now and I've enjoyed every single trip.

A clean a well equipped apartment, located in the non-touristy town of Canico. The apartment had everything we needed for a nice stay. We liked the lovely view from the balcony each morning. The location is handy for the motorway, to explore the beautiful island of Madeira. Within walking distance of supermarket, market square stalls, bakery and cash point. Had many visits for coffee and cake to the nice bakery near Quinta Splendida. Delicious fresh bread each morning too and all reasonably priced. Thank you Roger for allowing us to stay in your lovely apartment. We would recommend it to others.

Clean and tidy apartment near the centre of Caniço, with fairly large living room, two bedrooms, two bathrooms (one with bath) , a very complete kitchen and even a washing machine. There is also a parking space in the underground parking garage. We really can recommend this appartment, it's really cheap for what you get. There's an eatery next to the main entrance, with a very hospitable friendly English speaking couple. We ate there several times for a very fair price. There's also a (not so big) supermarket just around the corner. We had a marvelous time in Caniço. It's a fine location to start exploring Madeira. I lovely flat ,everything was nice and clean with a great view from the balcony .a lot of shops , supermarket and restaurant just around the corner. Is very close to the beach . Recommend to family or couples who wants to have a great holidays in madeira on the very wait and relax place.

We had amazing time in Madeira, and the town of Canico. The flat is in the lovely town center of Canico, with easy access to the main motorway of Madeira, and from there to the whole island. There are two supermarkets very close to the flat and decent places to eat and mix with the locals and the spirit of the island. The flat itself is clean, spacious and it comes with everything you will need to feel at home. We would like to thank all the people we met during our stay and especially the father of the owner who met and greeted us - Maurice - for showing us around and making us feel special. OBRIGADO.....hopefully, we shall meet again......all the best!!!

Enjoyed are stay in Canico for a week. Apartment had every thing we needed for our stay. Apartment located in a very nice lacation. Close to restaurants, markets, and city square. The restaurant 'A Central' within two minutes walk is very was very good. We did not have a car while we were there and did not use the bus system. We could walk to all the places we wanted to. Shopping mall was just a short walk and had a couple of good restaurants and bakeries in it. The restaurant on the first floor called the Bon Bon cafe was very good for a quick meal or snack. The owners were very helpful in getting information on the town and island. We are retired and just like to get out of our cold snowy winters. This is a great location for snow birds to stay.

A very well equipped apartment with secure parking and very convenient for restaurants and shops. Within two minutes of the VR motorway yet in a quiet village location. The decription of the property is accurate and comprehensive. The owners father meet guests at the airport and demonstrate all the facilities of the apartment and parking arrangements. With the nearness of the VR motorway it was possible to be almost anywhere on the island within a reasonable time. The restaurant 'A Central' within two minutes walk is very highly recommended.

Appartement agréable et grand pour 4 personnes. Bien placé sur l'île par rapport aux randonnées que nous voulions faire. A proximité des commerces dans Caniço. Maurice est venu nous accueillir à l'aéroport et nous a donné toutes les explications nécessaires. A cette époque il ne faisait pas très chaud dans l'appartement, mais possibilité d'utiliser les 2 radiateurs électriques d'appoint. Donc rien à redire, c'était parfait pour nous !

Highly recommended. The appartment is nice and spacious (for 4 people), was clean and fresh at our arrival. It has hardwood floor in the living room and bedrooms, and tiles elsewhere. Fully furnished kitchen, fitted with every ustensil you might think of. Mr De Nobrega's father was extremely obliging, came to the airport to meet us, provided us with some tips about Caniço's conveniences, stood by for any assistance about the appartment. Like many others before us, we loved the (little) balcony for relaxing times in the morning or evening, with a view on the sea and the Desertas Islands. Don't dream of an unobstructed view wide open to the sea, though. The view is actually what you see on one of the pictures on the site (the one showing a street, red car, and building in at a distance). The village had everything we could have wanted (bakery, supermarket, restaurants, ...) within easy walking distance. However, the free wifi access on the village plazza didn't work for us, we had to find other providers (for a fee). A note of caution, having an underground parking spot is very good, but the access, especially from/to level -2 is extremely narrow and windy. The smaller your car, the better! We would definitely go back to the same place should we visit Madera again. We haven't used the bus system during this stay. If you have a car, the appartment is close to an entrance to the highway, which will get you anywhere on the island. We loved the fesh tuna from the local supermarket, and had a lot of it.

Great place to escape a British winter!

This apartment is a real home from home - extremely well-equipped, spacious, clean and easy to maintain. We stayed 8 weeks from mid-January to early March and really enjoyed life in Canico. For 2 months the temperature ranged between 18 and 22 and the occasional rain showers were generally fleeting. Residents in the apartment block were very friendly and the town has a good range of shops, restaurants, etc. We recommend La Terrasse in particular for well-presented, good value fish dishes. The regular bus service from the end of the road is great for trips to Funchal to do the tourist trail. We can also recommend the Pride of Madeira minibus tours to see the rest of this beautiful island. The office is just around the corner from the apartment and the pick-up is from outside the door. Car-hire is expensive and Madeira's roads not for the faint-hearted but we got around easily by bus, sometimes hopping from one to another in Funchal. It's an easy walk down the old road and a sign-posted path to the seafront in Canico de Baixo but, unless you're hoping to improve your fitness, you'll probably want to get a bus or taxi rather than face the steep climb back to Canico. Gluttons for punishment, we made life-time friends with the owner of a bar halfway back up the path. It has a huge terrace with great views of the Ilhas Desertas. The apartment balcony has the same wonderful sea and island views. It is quite small but south-facing and a real suntrap. We also took a short bus ride from the town to Assomada church where you can pick up the levada trail. The local people guided our way and the views of the valley up there are stunning. We left our walking guidebook in the apartment so enjoy! Thanks to Roger and his father who offered us this apartment at a great rate for a long stay. (Some friends of ours paid more for a fortnight's B & B than we paid for 2 months of spacious luxury!) Whether you're looking for just a week or two or can enjoy a leisurely winter stay in your retirement, you really can't go wrong in this great apartment in Madeira.

We really enjoyed our two week stay in the apartment. Everything was clean and tidy and just as described .The owner very kindly met us at the airport to take us to the apartment, about a 15 minutes drive. A good bonus was the secure underground parking and a lift up to the apartment, which was in a pleasant, quiet area of town. A very convenient base for moving around the island. We have just spent two happy weeks in Roger's apartment which is conveniently situated in the lovely town, Canico. We have holidayed in this town many, many times and will, hopefully return again soon when we would have no hesitation in reserving this spacious, airy and well equipped apartment. We enjoyed our cup of tea sitting on the balcony in the morning sunshine and a glass of wine in the early evening and were lucky that it was warm enough to sit outside again after dinner. There are several very nice restaurants within easy walking distance, our favourite is A Lareira situated in the square where we enjoy a jug of wine outside watching Canico life, often there is a fesitval with traditional dancing and singing.The food here is excellent. If you don't want to hire a car to see the island there are tours, usually in small friendly groups with a well informed guide. The bus stop is close by with frequent buses to Funchal or down to Baxio, the sea front, where we also enjoy a drink and/or meal (excellent fish soup here) either at the restaurant far end of the promenade or at the pool side restaurant of the Four Seasons hotel. We would recommend you take a walk around the spectacular gardens of the hotel Splendida in Canico and experience the theme nights in the restaurant, we particularly enjoyed the Thai meal.

A wonderful Madeira apartment

This apartment is very accurately described in the owner's information. We felt that it represented excellent value. We found it to be impeccably clean on arrival. The kitchen was very well equipped with a large fridge/freezer and full sized hob with oven. The furnishings and accommodation were ample for four. Everything was tastefully presented - it had the feel of a home rather than a holiday let. We experienced very little noise coming from adjacent apartments or from the road. The village of Canico is very well served with supermarkets, smaller shops and restaurants. We enjoyed sitting in the square every evening, soaking up the atmosphere of this charming community. The fact that free wifi was available in the square was an unexpected bonus. The secure assigned parking was appreciated. We hired a car so we could explore the island more easily. The proximity of the VR1 main south coast road meant that it didn't take long to reach the west of the island. I would wholeheartedly recommend this property to anyone visiting Madeira. The contact with the owner before our stay was very helpful. If you want a relaxing stay in a very comfortable apartment, you would be well-advised to choose this one.

Me and my husband stayed in Mr & Mrs De Nobrega's apartment in October 2010. I must say we had a wonderful time in Madeira and the apartment was ideal for our requirements. Located about 10km from the airport, it was easy to find and we met Mr De Nobrega Snr at a Cafe underneath the apartment block. He gave us the keys to the apartment and showed us around. He was very helpful and told us some nice places to eat and drink in Canico. There is a lovely patisserie (very cheap) located just at the end of the street which was great as every morning we would wake up and buy the local pastries (Pastel da Nata) and have a fresh espresso...yum yum! There is also a small supermarket (Sa) at the end of the street so no need to use a car to buy your food. Canico is a lovely little village/town with a beautiful market square.There are plenty of nice restaurants and cafes for you to go to if you do not fancy cooking. There is also a great outdoor bar near the post office which you must go to. We went when karaoke was on although we didn’t sing it was very funny listening to everyone else have a go. Getting to Funchal is very simple if you do not have a car. There is a bus stop again located at the end of the street. It is very cheap (less than 2 euros) and takes you straight into Funchal…ideal for a day out. We hired a car and we really appreciated the underground car park that is provided for the apartment. Overall we would highly recommend Madeira and the apartment. We would have no hesitation in staying again. Thank you!"

From the moment that the apartment was booked to the time to the end the apartment holder was very friendly to me and my family. When i arrived at the apartment i was impressed with everything and the description of it was exactly how it was. The property was very clean, there was a hoover but i hardly had to use it, the owner showed me around the place and showed me on how to use the cooker and things like that. I would recommend this apartment to everyone really because it can be used by everyone with or without kids, old or young it's great. The surrounding area is great too with a small walk turning left and left again to a restuarant which i enjoyed alot, there's a big supermarket to do your shopping and cafes to relax. I would really like to stay at the apartment again.

Ideal location for exploring

We had a great time in Madeira, and the apartment was the ideal base for exploring the island. It's large, very comfortable and clean, and so close to the supermarket and cafes. The beds were very comfy, and the kitchen had everything we needed. Looking on the map before we went, I thought it would be a bit far from the north and west of the island for easy exploring, but with the new network of roads and tunnels, it couldn't have been easier to reach beaches, small villages in the north or the central mountains. The town itself is lovely, with some good restaurants and bars (and one club), and the beach is only a couple of km down the hill. Unlike nearby Santa Cruz, there isn't the constant stream of planes overhead, and it's well out of Funchal so nice and quiet. And despite my fears, driving in Madeira was fine, and certainly a lot easier than Spain. Highly recommended!

The apartment is wonderful & very clean & tidy- it has everything you need for your holiday & very well equipt. The supermarket is less than 5 mins away & the underground parking helps a great deal. There is an excellent restaurant within 5 mins walk as well as a snack bar, Pizza & Tapas restaurant in the new Cani Golden Shopping centre by the apartment, which is also within 5 mins walk. Busses run very regularly & are quite cheap & on time. You do need a hire car to see all the Island. Mr De Nobrega snr is on hand should you need any help & is very friendly. The balcony is great for just sitting & watching the world go by with a glass or two of the local wine at the end of the day. It was the perfect location near to Funchal but away from all the noise & traffic of the city, everywhere is so easy to get to. If you go during festival time there is a band in the square during the day & evening & they had a pop group there as well on the Saturday - & its all within 5 mins walk. Beware they let of very loud rockets during the festival throughout the day & evening. We loved the chimes from the church in the square, it starts at 8am & chimes every 15 mins until 8pm every day. Internet access is available at the main Canico Shopping mall - about 10 mins away, but only from 7pm in the evening during the week & they only have 2 terminals. However there is WiFi access for your own laptop at CaniGolden if you take it with you. Meals were reasonably priced in Canico, but more expensive in Funchal, make for Guiseppi restaurant near the fort the food is fantastic, its located just off the seafront, east of the cable car station. Try & make a trip to Ponta Du Pargo & eat at the Casa du Cha, they have wonderful food & the view from the restaurant is breathtaking. We loved the Monte Palace Gardens & could have stayed all day, the Tobogan at Monte is expensive 25 Euros for 2 people, but does go a long way. However you do need to take a taxi back to the cable car station as its a very long walk up several steep hills or even longer into Funchal. The Taxi costs 15 Euros & is well worth it. We loved the Monte Cable car its very gentle & costs 23 Euros each for the combined Cable car & gardens ticket (thats a return fare). Driving is very easy but the hills are very steep, everyone is so friendly, even those who don't speak English. Lots & lots of gift shops everywhere. We had a wonderful & relaxing holiday.

Stayed here in March. Beautiful apartment, absolutely spotless, well equipped and excellent location. We would recomend car hire. Area was lovely and quiet. Great supermarket in walking distance with lovely fresh bread and rolls first thing in the morning. Would certainly recommend this apartment and will definitely be returning in the future

Excellent appartment location, in a small town located 2 miles in-land, half-way between Airport & Funchal. Easy to get to main motorway and other main roads around the island. We were a party of 2 x couples and found this accomodation ideal for our needs (2 x bedrooms + 2 x bathrooms). We had a hire car so appreciated the reserved underground parking down below the appartment. The appartment is located a short walk away from a well-equipped supermaket which we used on a daily basis for fresh bread/rolls, cooked food, etc. Overall we very much liked Madeira as a holiday location and this accommodation provided us with excellent value for money and we felt it better not to be staying in Funchal because of parking, traffic, and the quick access to all the main roads. Good places to visit are Machico (only sandy beach for easy swimming we found) and the scenic walk (5 miles) around the headland beyond Canical at the eastern end of the island. Also the drive along the old northern coast road from Sao Vincente to Porto Moniz is worth the effort (40 mins drive away from Canico).

The appartment is excellently laid out, well equipped and clean. It's in a very convenient position with a very well stocked supermarket and bus stop for Funchal about 100 metres away. If you have a hire car and wish to walk the famous levadas there's parking below the appartment. A short drive to Camacha and Aqua Mamsas will put you onto some beautiful level walks where you can see the rural life and locals tending their terraced gardens. As Canico is a small village we would reccommend booking a hire car. Current price is around 20 euros a day. Make sure you visit the nearby gardens of Quinta Splendida, the harbours at Machico and Santa Cruz. The Sunday market at Santa De Serra is quite an experience. Jim & Pat, Sussex.

i stayed with my girlfriend and baby daughter for 2 weeks from 26th september to 10th october (the weather was still very hot during that time of year). The apartment is ideally situated in the small town of canico. it is simple to get to Funchal by either bus or car and is a very good base to see the island for yourself. we were provided with an essentials guide to the apartment which was v handy and just gave some relevant info of local amenities and things in the apartment. we also met up with Mr De Nobrega to pick up the keys who also was very helpful himself so that was a nice touch. The apartment has everything you need, what with having a baby we couldn't go out much at night however we were able to cook some nice meals bought from the local supermarkets and there are a selection of fine restaurants are literally just round the corner so we could take our baby on occasion and still get back before her bed time to chill out in the apartment with some wine from the supermarket (two supermarkets nearby both with a large selection of very affordable, very nice wines). the private parking space was very handy and there is a lift to get you to different floors of the apartment (i think there are 5 floors in total and the apartment is on the 2nd floor). we did many driving trips during the day, and didn't find that having a baby hindered us in any way. the apartment was very clean on arrival and as i said it had everything we needed. it was also very quiet which again was great for a sleeping baby. we cooked some nice meals when we didnt go out and when baby was put to bed we could watch a few films with some dvds we had brought over (there is a DVD player in the apartment) so that was handy. the views from the balcony are stunning and it was also a very good place to just sit with a glass of wine and watch the world go slowly by. You can also get a view of the sunrise in the mornings if you happen to be an early riser (again with a baby we didnt have much choice in the matter) there are a lot of activities that you can do nearby such as diving, fishing and walking but madeira caters for all generations i would say (however it thankfully does not have the 18-30 culture anywhere). all in all we had a great holiday and i would like to go back again. whenever that may be i would have no hesitation in coming back to canico and staying at this apartment again. Thanks for providing a great place and a trouble free holiday.

The situation of the apartment was excellent, sitting on the balcony watching the world go by and being so close to town for the restaurants. Despite being in the town centre the apartment was quiet. Everything was in the apartment that was required and clean and tidy. Would certainly consider returning and recomending to friends.

Mr. De Nobrega's father was very helpful in showing us where the flat was. The car park was very convenientl downstaris and the flat was just right for us (myself, my husband, David and Alexander, our teenage son). We liked the kitchen and found it was very well equipped. There were very nice restaurants nearby and we found it easy to get to other parts of Madeira from the flat. We had a very enjoyable time in Madeira and will return one day.

In May 2008 my wife and I (we are from Holland) stayed in this apartment in Canico. The location is perfect. It's close to the airport (10 km -> but without the noise of airplanes!) and close to Funchal (also 10 km). It's at the south side of the island with a balcony on the south side. From the balcony you can see the deserted islands to the south of Madeira. It's also at an altitude of 200 meters above sealevel which is perfect. If you go higher up (above 600 meters) there would be a high chance of being in the clouds at your apartment (during a part of the day). The distance from the apartment to a good supermarket is about 100 meters! The apartment has a parkinggarage underneath which you can use for your rental car. The apartment has a fridge, but also a washing machine, an oven, a microwave, a toaster, a water heater. We found it very comfortable. One bathroom is with a shower and toilet, the other bathroom is with bath and toilet. The apartment is very good for people who like to hike on Madeira. From the apartment you can get easily to the starting point of the different trails. If you return to the apartment in the late afternoon you can walk to the supermarkt and buy the stuff you want to eat for your dinner. If you don't want to cook then you can go to the first floor of the supermarket where they have a cheap and good take-away. All kinds of food are on display. You pay by weight. Close to the apartment are several restaurants (100 to 600 meters). The prices are very reasonable. You can have a main course for about 7 -12 euro a person. If you decide to rent the apartment the owner will provide you with an detailled pamphlet about the apartment and how to use everything (parkinggarage, waste disposal, etc). My wife and I will return to this apartment on our next stay to the island. We now stayed for 10 days, but we hadn't enough time to do the most beautiful hikes (we hiked everyday for about 4 to 7 hours !). We recommend this apartment for active people (with a rental car) who want to use it as a base to go hiking and sightseeing on Madeira. We hope you enjoy Madeira and this apartment.
