Sunrise Ridge is a custom built, modern vacation rental. Built in 2017 by a couple that loves the Big Bend and wanted the perfect vacation home for themselves and to share with others.
Wonderful home, built in 2017, nestled into a gentle valley bordering the Christmas Mountains. Get away from everything with incredible, always-changing views in all directions, while still enjoying many modern amenities and easy access to Terlingua Ranch Headquarters, the surrounding towns, and Big Bend National Park.
Sunrise Ridge is designed to be open and welcoming, maximizing comfort and offering multiple outdoor spaces that connect you with the magic of the Chihuahuan Desert. An enormous covered porch with stunning views of the Corazones Peaks often offers a breeze even in the warmest months, inviting you to relax in a rocking chair or nap in the double hammock. French doors lead to a cozy screened porch in back with lovely views into the Christmas Mountains. Inside, high ceilings, Saltillo tile floors and exposed wooden beams in the spacious living room provide an attractive space to sit and socialize or simply relax and read when you're not out exploring the area. Central air-conditioning and ceiling fans keep you cool in summer and warm in winter.
Across an amazing granite-topped island, the modern kitchen has stainless steel appliances, including dishwasher. It is fully stocked with all the equipment you need, whether putting together snacks for a hike or cooking dinner for everyone. An outdoor gas grill is also available for use.
Two bedrooms occupy the back of the house, each with access to an outdoor porch. One contains a queen bed and the other has two twin beds, all with Tuft and Needle custom foam mattresses. Like the living room, each bedroom has its own individually controlled central A/C and ceiling fan to keep things comfortable. A Jack-and-Jill bathroom offers privacy for each bedroom's residents, with a large Saltillo tile shower in the middle.
A half mile away from the closest neighbor, Sunrise Ridge offers sublime quiet and solitude. From the moment, the sun comes up over the eastern ridge of the valley, which has a pristine view of the Chisos Mountains and Big Bend National Park, the desert valley comes alive with wildlife and color, and there's enough space for hours of hiking to enjoy it all. As evening approaches, enjoy magnificent displays of shifting color and light as the sun sets on the other side of the valley, making way for a night so bright with stars that the Milky Way literally lights up the desert.
From Sunrise Ridge, you are well-positioned for day trips across the West Texas area. To the North, you can drive to Fort Davis and the McDonald Observatory, Marfa and the Chinati Art Foundation, or Alpine and Sul Ross University's Museum of the Big Bend. Drive south and you'll find Terlingua Ghost Town, the south entrance to Big Bend National Park (about 50 minutes away), and the Big Bend Ranch State Park. Closer to home, about two miles from the house, is Terlingua Ranch Headquarters, where you can grab some grub and maybe some live music at the Bad Rabbit Cafe, before retreating back to the valley and the quiet of your desert home.
Being isolated doesn't mean being out of touch, though, and Sunrise Ridge has high-speed satellite internet and phone service to keep you plugged in, should you need it when you're not taking in all the other marvels that the Chihuahuan Desert and West Texas have to offer. We welcome you to share in the wonders of this unique and restorative place.
The Neighborhood:
TERLINGUA RANCH: Located between Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park and including much of the town of Terlingua, Terlingua Ranch is a private subdivision of over 190,000 acres, divided into 9,500 tracts owned by about 5,000 individuals and crisscrossed by 1,100 miles of dirt and rock roads. Tracts range from five acres to several hundred acres. It is some of the most rugged and scenic land in Texas.
Back in the 1960’s, the Ghost Town and much of what later became “Terlingua Ranch” was owned by racing legend and car designer extraordinaire, Carol Shelby and some of his friends. The decided to promote the area by holding a chili cook-off in the then abandoned Ghost Town. That little stunt of a cook-off grew into CASI (Chili Appreciation Society International) which now hosts nearly 500 chili cook-offs around the nation and internationally, all leading up the championship cook-off every year in Terlingua. Shelby and friends later subdivided the Ranch and started selling it off to hunters and rugged naturalists. Over the decades, the area was reborn and an eclectic community of nature lovers, artists, musicians, adventurers, and folks just wanting to escape from “civilization” has grown and started to resettle this rough country.
People have come and gone. New buildings have risen while others have fallen, Dreams have been realized and others crushed. Through it all, the land remains. The harsh desert and vast openness encourages positive development and slowly swallows up and recovers from past abuses. The old cinnabar mine sites and ranching outposts persist as relics and ghost towns, some redeveloped, some carefully preserved, and others dissolving back into the desert. Abandoned dreams eventually become points of interests for those of us that stumble upon them decades later. Terlingua Ranch is a bizarre mix of old and new, good and bad, growth and decline, all completely unregulated. Modern homes with high values and stunning designs stand beside dilapidated do-it-yourself mistakes and abandoned ruins of the 1800’s and early 1900’s.
The landscape is even more varied than the people and the structures. Rugged mountains, deep canyons, wild arroyos, dry and wet creeks, peaceful valleys, breathtaking badlands, moonscape like mud flats, the remains of ancient volcanoes, and fossilized ancient seabeds. All of it nurturing a vast array of plant life and wildlife. Around every corner and over every hill lies new and unexpected surprises.
The Ranch is now home to a few hundred hardy souls. It is also dotted with a diverse array of vacation rental lodging options and campsites. Like the diverse land, they range in quality, style, value, and price. A few are amazing dream destinations. Some are good places to sleep. Others are the stuff of nightmares. (We don’t manage any in the nightmare category.)

Our family of 6 loved the home! It is very secluded and peaceful. There are great views of the mountains on all sides of the home. I would strongly encourage a four wheel drive vehicle to access the home. The high speed internet was fantastic to have to let the family unwind after a busy day of hiking.

The house layout works great for couples. We brought our dogs too. Lots of space and the front porch view is amazing. It's waaaay out there and a very rocky slow drive to get to the house. Lotsa privacy and perfect for mountain bike riders. We ran out of the water provided but there is more in the store room. Internet and receiving texts are sketchy but it is about disconnecting. We had a great time. The Terlingua Lodge is close by and they have a restaurant. It was a great stay and Janet and Daryl with Big Bend Vacation Rentals are very responsive. We have stayed in another str they manage.

The house was nice. It was as pictured. It could use some updating and repainting. But overall was nicer than the other VRBOs of that size that I found. The stars are absolutely amazing out there. The driveway is no joke, long and bumpy, but was no problem in our Honda Pilot. The drive to the house from Terlingua was longer than expected. Close to 45 minutes.
2.5 / 5.0
Overall the house is great. I would suggest a row of hooks in the bathroom for towels, night clothes, daub kits. One little towel bar is not enough. Also a row of hooks near the entrance for coats, backpacks, etc. The window in the kitchen needs a handle. The window over the TV won’t stay open. When you turn the unit in the bedroom on cool, water runs down the wall.

Property is well described in VRBO listing.
Amazing customer service from rental manager Daryl. Unexpected 2-3inches of snow came on our checkout day and Daryl called to open the house up for a free night to accommodate from a safety perspective.
Beyond customer service I would recommend this property! We felt sorry for the suckers who stayed in tents by the side on the road while we drove to our beautiful, secluded, well maintained VRBO!

We arrive very late at night. The house is so desolate and remote there was no light to be seen anywhere. The house its about 20 miles from the town of terlingua which makes it inconvenient to go into town. The driveway to the house is horrible! It is very rocky and dangerous. As I mentioned, it was very very dark and there were no lights. No one had bothered to turn on the outside light so that we could see something and at least find the house. As a result, I felt and hit the back of my head We decided since I needed medical attention we would stay in town to be close to a medical facility and A more suitable place to stay. The house is lovely and has all the amenities except television which would be very handy. I will be more thorough with my search next time. This cannot happen again. The property owner is very nice and easy to work with. However, she has not offered any compensation for my accident.

Sun rise Turlingua
Out of the way and very secluded. Took 40 minutes to get to Tx 118 for our daily ride to Terlingua or
Big Bend National Park. Sat outside and marveled at the clear ski full of stars. We had a wonderful trip and the house
Met our needs.

30 miles from nowhere
Literally. Surprised to be so far away from town and could've used directions on how to leave the home and get back on main road and to BBNP... i.e., like thorough instructions TO the home. The kitchen was large and accommodating. Need at least one electrical plug on kitchen island. No TV or radio :(
Sand piled up on door mat, needs to be blown off to do its job... we were jumping over the mat as it was tracking into the house. Lots of spider webs inside the home. Floors were dirty in bathroom. Extremely low water pressure in shower. Wheel on grill was broken upon arrival but we made it work. This home is WAY out there and extremely quiet. Beautiful mountains surround the home.

Great House with beautiful scenery!
We really enjoyed our stay. The house is perfect and well provided for to meet all our needs. Once you get to the house it's a great place, however the road to get there is a bit bumpy and long. We were thankful that we rented a car and didn't take our personal vehicles down that road.

Desert stay with all the comforts of home🌵
This is our second year at Sunrise Ridge and the stay did not disappoint. From the well-equipped, spotless kitchen to comfortable beds, spacious living room and stunning outdoor spaces both front and back, we had a truly relaxing experience. Daryl, the manager, was very responsive to a couple of issues, no propane and, horrors, no hair dryer, delivering both post haste, even bringing a brand new hair dryer in the box. Thank you, Daryl!
Sunrise Ridge was a welcome respite after going to the park which was extremely crowded and noisy. Desert solitude awaited our return and we did not want to leave after a week’s long visit. As Edward Abbey said, “What draws us into the desert is the search for something intimate in the remote.” Sunrise Ridge is all that and more.

Texans Enjoying Texas
We enjoyed the property and were not disappointed in the seclusion for which we had hoped. The directions to the property were needed, but were clear and spot on. The drive to the property was harder for those of us without 4 wheel drive vehicles but could be done. We were able to locate everything we needed at the home. We expected a long drive to Big Bend but considering our wish for a secluded place we were pleased that the drive was quicker than expected.

Blew my mind away!
I was looking forward to staying at this rental before we even got there. But the actual experience far exceeded our expectations. It is so peaceful and quiet. I could have sat on the front porch and enjoyed the view all day. The stars are incredible at night. We enjoyed the beautiful kitchen for the Thanksgiving holiday. We really appreciated that it was pet friendly. WiFi was fantastic! Definitely recommend a high clearance vehicle to drive to this house. The drive to get to the house may take a while but it makes for a really remote cabin that is so quiet and peaceful. It heals the sole. Will definitely stay here again.

Relaxation in Desert Paradise
This is our second time to stay at Sunrise Ridge and we enjoyed the solitude and quiet. The house is very comfortable and the windows bring in lots of natural light and beautiful vistas. The front porch provides escape from the sun while still providing a breathtaking view. The back porch is wonderful for outdoor dining. It's definitely worth the drive. We will be back!

REALLY worth the LONG, BUMPY, DUSTY ride from Big Bend
Well appointed, clean, comfortable house on a hill out in the desert at the base of a very remote, breathe-taking mountain.

Beware of Driveway
This is an absolute amazing property. The views are stunning! The only thing, make sure you have a vehicle with good ground clearance as the driveway is awful.

Beautiful property!!!
Amazing property to relax and kick back. The views around the property were gorgeous. Kitchen was huge and prefect to gather around as we cooked and socialized. Jack and Jill bathroom. Only down side was the last 2-3 mile drive in. Super rough and don’t try to do it in a car. I would definitely stay at this property again.

Great family time.
We loved the remote property. The views of the stars were stunning, we even saw shooting stars and javelinas eating cacti. We had some water issues but called the property manager and it was handled within hours. We played several games provided- Jenga, scrabble and ping pong. One thing to note is if you get sick the nearest hospital is pretty far. We weren't expecting to need to go but in case you do:). The home had everything you could need for morning coffee and had plenty of drinking water!

Comfortable, spacious, clean and a great location: highly recommend!
Spent a few days with the family before everyone is going back to school and college. It was the perfect place to put away the phones and spend time playing board games, talking, and star gazing. The house is spacious, modern, comfortable, and super clean. Yes, the road gets bumpy, but that just adds to the fun and adventure of getting out there in the desert.
Make sure to have dinner at the Bad Rabbit Cafe, hike the Santa Elena Canyon trail in Big Bend National Park (bring extra shoes and socks- it’s worth it!), and hit up the general in Terlingua Ghost Town.

Peaceful and Perfect location
This property was exactly as advertised. It's a perfect location for visiting Big Bend with restaurants, stores and gas within 30-40 minutes of the house. Perfect property for star gazing at night because of it's seclusion from other homes. We had a small problem with the shower but they were quick to address the issue. I highly recommend this property to anyone looking to get away from the business of everyday life.

The property is great. Clean, modern, spacious. All amenities.
Only negatives, for me, was distance from Big Bend and condition of the the last 3 miles of road leading to the house.

Great home, comfortable with amazing views from the porch.
We had a girls trip out to Big Bend and loved staying in this home. We enjoyed the home and as probably most have said - especially the front porch. Very spacious home, clean and comfortable. As also others have called out, the last few miles in are not paved road so be prepared. Also, Big Bend (to really explore the park and get to visitor centers) is 1.5 hour drive each way. But its well worth the drive to come back to this home and relax and enjoy. Thank you again!

Once you Finally get to the house...it's great! So peaceful & serene w/ lg covered porch for enjoying the evening sunsets. We loved how the kitchen w/ very large island was completely open to living area. Plenty of room for 2-3 people helping in the kitchen & chatting w/our friends. Kitchen nicely stocked w/ good cookware, serving bowls & silverware. There were 6 of us & although we only had 1 shower between both BR...we had plenty of hot water for all 6 to shower after coming back "stinky" from hiking trails@ BigBend. Would recommend bringing a bag of crushed ice & a couple gal jugs of water for drinking & cooking. Would be nice to have an extra clothes rod/ bar installed in the area across from shower to hang towels on to dry OR put hook on back of BR doors. Also suggest you do not drive a low-clearance vehicle....the last 2 1/2 miles to the house is is very rough w/lots of dips!

Great house and beautiful views . House was very clean and kitchen was supplied with all necessities and more . We loved the screened in porch. Water pressure in kitchen was very low but no issues in the shower. We loved our stay beautiful home .

BEAUTIFUL location, surrounded by mountains
Location was great. In fact, we spent one day just exploring and hiking up the mountain behind the house, and probably could have done that another day up another mountain. The space was perfect for 4 adults and 2 dogs. One drawback is there's no fence to let the dogs out in so we had to watch them outside but they were good about not wandering off. Read other reviews about house being far from the highway so we were prepared for that and enjoyed the drive, no problem. Incredible front porch with lots of seating, gorgeous view of the stars on cloudless nights. Plenty of bottled water, linnens, dishes. Pans sucked and with very little water pressure to wash them, we ended up buying a pan in town of our own to use. Had plenty of all the other basic spices and cooking needs. Water takes a LONG time to get hot (like 10 min), but when it does, it's HOT and their shower room is oh so enjoyable. Turning on more than one faucet seemed to help reduce the heating up time.. We would all definitely stay here again!

Excellent house
This is a great property. The house is very comfortable and well appointed. It fit our family of four (and dog) very comfortably. The indoor spaces are comfortable and there is a great screened porch with dining for six, as well as a separate large porch. Plenty of dishes, the dishwasher worked great, and coffee and drinking water are provided. Couple of caveats...this house is remote. It's a long drive from the main road. The road on property is well maintained, but I was glad we had a 2WD SUV for the clearance. In exchange, you get a fabulous location and solitude. It's about an hour drive to the entrance of BBNP. Also, the water is rain water, so it's not potable. The water pressure isn't great, but you'll get by. I looked at a lot of properties before picking this one, and I'm so glad we stayed here. Despite the long drive, this place was very comfortable, the property managers were very helpful, and the house was luxurious relative to how rugged the surrounding area is. I also felt like COVID precautions were taken seriously, and this was a great place to social distance. I'd book this place again in a heartbeat.

Beautiful property for peace and solitude
We enjoyed our stay at Sunrise Ridge. Directions provided by the property manager were outstanding. For the most part, wifi worked well. No Verizon cell phone reception, but the property has a landline guests can use. Under normal conditions, driving the dirt road to the cabin would be quite easy (4WD for snow or mud). Due to record setting snowfall, we were snowed in for 24 hours and only got out using 4 low.

Quiet and peaceful
We stayed at the property for 3 nights and really enjoyed our time there (3 adults and 4 yo). The house is beautiful and very well maintained. The area is remote and very quiet, definitely could spend a week there easily, chilling in the hammock and reading books. There are several good books, games, puzzles in the house. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you may need to use for cooking. The property managers provide you with a very detailed directions you should use to get to the property, follow that and don't follow the GPS. The house is about 30 min drive from the highway, 15 of which is on unpaved but well maintained road. It's about 1 hr drive to the Big Bend National Park entrance and about 1.5 hrs from Alpine.

Solitude in the Desert
My husband and I have been coming out to the beautiful Big Bend country for twenty-five years now and found this property to be magical. We’ve stayed in the Chisos Basin for years but are now needing a bit more comfort, having our first experience out in Terlingua two years ago when we stayed at Crystal Valley right on Terlingua Ranch Road. Although a lovely property, complete with an outdoor claw foot tub, Sunrise Ridge far surpassed our expectations. Privacy and seclusion are to be had in this well-appointed, spotlessly clean, modern house with a stunning kitchen, large island, plenty of pots to cook with, utensils, basic spices, plastic wrap, paper towels, etc. Just plan ahead and bring the groceries with you. Beds are comfortable and linens are first rate with plenty of fluffy towels. The week we were there was quite frigid so the space heaters provided came in handy. Plenty of hiking to be had on the property and all the signed rocks on the enclosed back porch are a testament to many who have travelled here and thoroughly enjoyed their stay. The drive back was a little dicey with a snowstorm from Terlingua to Fort Stockton, but worth it to see snow in the desert, a memorable addition to our stay. Undoubtedly, we will return.
