About this house rental
Summary:
La Paloma Triste: Classic adobe vacation home. Minutes from Terlingua and Big Bend National Park.
The Space:
Step back in time at this vintage Terlingua adobe. La Paloma Triste is an ideal escape from the madness of modern life. This is the quintessential Terlingua vacation home.
La Paloma Triste (The Sad Dove) is a classic adobe home near Willow Spring and just minutes from Terlingua with excellent views of the Chisos Mountains and Willow Mountain. Built in the 80’s, with antique doors, windows, fixtures, and furnishings reclaimed from much older homes in Mexico and the Southwest, this cozy home blends modern conveniences with genuine rustic charm. Whether relaxing by the wood burning stove or enjoying the views from the porch swing, you’ll feel as if you stepped back in time to the pioneer days of the Wild West.
There is plenty of room to relax with two bedrooms, a full kitchen, a large living room, one and a half bathrooms, a spacious porch and covered parking, not to mention forty private acres of pristine desert habitat. The main bedroom features a queen sized four poster bed, antique armoire, antique dresser and a private bath with a shower. The second bedroom has two walls full of windows with breathtaking views of the Chisos Mountains and nearby Bee Mountain. The living room has an antique wood burning stove (wood provided), rustic built-in shelves filled with artifacts and other items of local interests, and comfortable seating. The fully stocked kitchen has a new gas stove, antique sink, rustic shelving, and a classic pine and cedar table that was built by the owners. The large back porch has a porch swing for two with amazing views of the Chisos Mountains and Bee Mountain. The carport protects your vehicle from the west Texas sun and our infrequent storms.
Of course, the main attractions are outside. Take time to enjoy the solitude of the Chihuahuan desert and Willow Spring. The area around the house is landscaped with native plants, interesting rocks, and rusty pioneer artifacts that were collected over many years by the original owner. You will also want to visit Big Bend National Park, the Rio Grande River, Big Bend Ranch State Park, Terlingua Ghost Town, and our various restaurants and shops. If you don’t have time on this trip, you’re welcome to return again and again.
The views of the night sky are beyond simple description. The Big Bend region has the darkest nights (lowest light pollution) of anywhere in the continental US.
As the song says, “the stars at night are big and bright deep in the heart of Texas”. They’re even bigger and brighter here in the Bend. When the moon is out, you’ll be amazed at how bright and clear it shines. When the moon is not out, you’ll be stunned by the countless stars and the light and dark bands of the Milky Way. In the hour or two after sunset and before sunrise, you can often see the International Space Station and other satellites racing across the night sky. Shooting stars are visible throughout the year, especially during the Perseid and Geminid meteor showers.
Check out “VisitBigBend.com” for suggestions of things to do and see during your stay. Explore the parks, raft the river, go horseback riding, take scenic drives, go mountain biking, visit the ghost town, eat out, enjoy the local nightlife including live music at several small venues, watch the wildlife, or just relax on the porch with your favorite book. Return home exhausted and inspired from endless adventures or well-rested and refreshed from escaping the rush of modern life. The choices are all yours. Regardless of your plans, La Paloma Triste (The Sad Dove) is an ideal home away from home for your visit the Big Bend.

The owners are delightful, and the house is on open desert near Big Bend, offering quietude and beautiful views. The house is old and quaint, and as such could use some TLC touches to make it a bit more comfortable.

This house was perfect for our family trip to see both the national and the state park. The property has a beautiful 360 view of the desert with ocotillos, birds, and mountains everywhere. Willow mountain right next to it is a lovely sight.

The Adobe house was just as listed and really cool. Authentic and just perfect. The stars out there are amazing. We will be back next year.

We loved everything about this house. We cannot wait to come back!

This house was perfect to come back to after a long day of hiking! Beds were comfortable. We did not use any kitchen stuff so we are unable to comment on the kitchenware but over all a great place to stay!

The property was perfect. Clean, well stocked, quiet, close to Big Bend. We loved everything about it and would stay again.

The home is just as described on the website. Beds are very comfortable and the back porch is nice. It is close to a couple of properties but still very private. Kitchen is well stocked with cooking utensils. Home is very roomy, lots of space to spread out.
We had a maintenance issue, I reached out to Janet at 6:45am by email and she responded almost immediately!
June/July warning: this is no fault of the property owners but I would heed a warning of a June/July stay due to the extreme heat. Although the home stays comfortable with the 3 window units the kitchen stays in the low 80’s and the water temperature stays almost too hot to shower with. Again this is no fault of the home/owners its just part of the environment.
I WOULD absolutely stay here again any of the other 10 months of the year!

If you want an authentic West Texas adobe ranch house experience-this is the place. Enjoyed the front porch for morning coffee/bird watching & night star shows. The orientation of house faces south so a regular breeze felt on porch. Had a thunderstorm lightning show that was breathtaking. We went early June & vacation gods were kind w/cool nights & highs in low/mid 90’s. Has all the kitchen items you’d need. 2 Queen beds one soft, one firm - pick what u like. Hard pine floors/antiques dot the house & landscape - great conversation starters. Bring a lantern/flashlight if you’ve never experienced country dark. Suggest bringing water, great camera, and childhood dreams of riding the range and exploring.

We had a wonderful stay at this property to explore the parks, Terlingua, Marfa and Fort Davis. The house and property are beautiful. It's about a mile off the highway and very close to Terlingua and Big Bend National Park. The home is wonderfully secluded and quiet. All the amenities you need are present. The owner does request that no toilet paper be flushed in the toilets. There is a small trash can for you to use. The house is a mile down a dirt road. If there is no rain, you will be fine in a car. If it rains you will be grateful for 4 wheel drive.

After many decades on this earth, I can say, absolutely, that this 5 day trip to the Big Bend area - staying at The Sad Dove property - was one of the TOP 3 trips of my life. Seriously. The name of the game when visiting this area of the country is location, location, location. I cannot imagine a better location than this. The natural surroundings are awesome and bountiful, in every direction. In the early morning while the sun is still in the east, if you line up the grill and the yucca and then look off into the distant mountains, you will see the "opening" of the Santa Elana Canyon, on the Rio Grande. Then hop in the car and drive to see its magnificent grandeur up close. It just takes your breath away. The location is also great for buzzing into Terlingua for a great evening meal at The Starlight Theater Bar and Grill. Food is fantastic, people are friendly, and some nights they have live music. One of the nights we were there, they had a local group with acoustic instruments and really nice singing in harmony.
A main entrance to BB National Park is very close - about 20 miles or so from the house. Of course the park is magnificent. If you have time for only one thing in the park, go on the designated Scenic Drive. No words to describe, just do it. You won't be sorry. We found the house to be very comfortable and authentic, as an old adobe structure. Fits right in to the history and customs of the location.
We used the kitchen more often than we ate out, and it was absolutely fine for all our needs. Appreciated the ice cube trays in the freezer and used them daily. The beds were comfortable, and it was great having 1 1/2 bathrooms. The interior temp was easy to regulate between the air conditioners and ceiling fans. Although one bedroom ceiling fan did not work, the room was entirely comfortable with the ac in use. As is, this is the most perfect rental situation I have ever experienced. If I could make one change, I would put different chairs on the porch. The black ones are not very comfortable and the ones in the closet were both broken. BUT even this did not cause any serious problems, We figured out a temporary solution, and had a wonderful, spectacular time, and would return to The Sad Dove for any future trip to the area. Thanks to all who make this place possible and available. MMH

It really is a dream of a place but mattresses and window-ac-units should be replaced. Everything else is in excellent shape and couldn’t be better. Location is a true five stars.

Loved Sad Dove. Location and porch were awesome. Location to Big Bend is a huge plus. Would definitely stay here again and highly recommend. Could use a few improvements. Refrigerator needs to be replaced or defrosted, no toaster, update shower. Ceiiling fan in one bedroom did not work.

We had the best time staying here. The location was perfect. The views from every window where phenomenal. We were comfortable and the house had all we needed. The directions provided were very clear and helpful. I would jump at the chance to stay here again.

Upon entering the house was very clean. It was cold during our stay and we enjoyed the wood burning furnace with free firewood. Electric heaters did the job too. The grounds and house have a collection of interesting things which we enjoyed. The kitchen was more than adequate for our needs. Being a suburbanite, I was concerned about the gravel road into the location but it was easy to navigate. We really enjoyed the place. We have no complaints about our stay. We would wish for some tile in the bathroom/shower, a television for streaming (wi-fi was excellent), and a toilet that would flush the paper. Thanks for great memories! Highly recommend!

Desert hideaway
Simple, comfortable and homey. Located away from any neighbors, yet not far from services in the hamlet of Terlingua. Views of both The Window and Santa Elena Canyon from porch sitting area! A special treat for us bird lovers: we heard elf owls calling at night.

Quiet and near town but far enough away to get the full effect of the South Texas Night sky! Convenient location to the National and State parks.

Quiet peaceful desert house
located conveniently close to BBNP and Terlingua just one mile off the TX 118. Isolated from other homes in the area. Suggest bringing in pre-cooked food as the kitchen is a mix and match of pots/pans/dishes etc. Note also the bathroom rules of not being able to flush your paper in the toilet-if you are uncomfortable with that this in not the place for you.

Great, Secluded Location, Yet Close to Everything
This home was perfect for the Big Bend feeling! The night skies were gorgeous, with not many homes in sight. Town center was a short drive and Big Bend Parks were nearby. I would stay here again, if I'm in the area.

Great home close to Big Bend
Home is about a mile off highway but not too hard to find. Great location with great views, even when washing the dishes. Home is rustic as pictures show but beds are comfortable, back porch has a swinging bench which has great views, and very nice wood floors in all rooms but bathrooms. The night sky is so beautiful at this location, so many bright stars. Bathrooms are basic and fairly rustic but were clean and everything worked fine and had plenty of space to hang towels. Pictures don’t show the sturdy kitchen table which we used to play cards at night. We spent all our days in the park which is close by. We only made breakfast at the house and one dinner. Kitchen has the basic supplies for making meals. They have coffee and everything needed for coffee, paper towels, toilet paper, lots of drinking water (if you don’t want to drink the well water), shampoo, conditioner, and plenty of towels in the bathrooms. I greatly appreciated having coffee and the supplies. The location was my favorite part as close to town, food store, restaurants, park, and gas station but house far back away from other homes! Only drawback was no toaster and I didn’t see smoke detectors, maybe I missed them ? We had a great time and would stay again. Property manager responded fast when I texted a question about early check in and also emailed me right after we arrived which I appreciated. Thank you for sharing your home!

Big Bend Rescheduled 2021
The property was as described. Actually the location not that hard to find at all. The ability to cook and clean up and sleep in beds is essential for good hiking exploring trips. We did experience some concern for the kitchen faucet and drain. Water is a precious commodity and the faucet dripped alot. Thanks for letting us stay in your property. LTullos NC

Get away from it all
We were visiting Big Bend National Park and were pleased to find a house to ourselves, off the beaten path but close to the park. The covered patio was nice for enjoying sunsets and the night skies were beautiful. Two large bedrooms, a living room with wood stove, and a decent kitchen gave us plenty of room. The one mile drive on a dirt road isn’t difficult

Good place
Comfortable, close to everything, great star watching. There was a blip with check in but was quickly fixed.

Secluded, beautiful, and enchanting
Property is about a mile off the highway and has all necessary amenities. Night sly was BEAUTIFUL and I wish I could spend more time there. Would definitely recommend staying here. Only improvement I can think of is the gravel road - needs to be leveled as my Altima hit a few bumps every time I went to the house.

Adobe house
Overall the rental had all the amenities that were described on the web site. It was reasonable clean. It is a bit far from the main road.
Would be nice if the property have a second shower instead of a one full bath and one half bath.

Peaceful solitude in gorgeous surroundings
If you want peace and solitude and you enjoy drinking coffee on the porch in the morning, or happy hour in the evening in a beautiful setting, look no further. This place is a little slice of heaven on earth. The house is decorated with cool southwest artifacts, the beds are comfortable, the kitchen is well equipped so we fixed our dinners here, and there were no problems checking in or out. The managers will e-mail you to make sure all is well. We arrived in the daytime without a problem, but we came back after dark one night and got lost because we drove too far on Rt 118 - it's only a mile out of the town of Terlingua - very close to Big Bend National Park. We are two couples who stayed here and loved it - we will be back!

This property is situated perfectly for quick access to both the Big Bend National Park and Big Bend State Park. We enjoyed the rustic feel of the house and being “off the grid” while there. Take the property guidance seriously. My husband was delighted (he is into snakes) to find a rattlesnake outside while exploring the property. Our friends also found a Black Widow spider. Both to be expected in this part of the country but good to keep in mind if you have adventurous children with you who might want to go on a nature walk. We purchased groceries in Alpine, as recommended. There is a market and gas station in Terlingua if you need something in a pinch. Check out the Ghost town while you’re there for some good restaurant options! Overall, we really enjoyed our stay and hope to make it back to La Paloma Triste some day!

An oasis during the great texas blizzard of ‘21
While this week was stressful due to icy roads and power outages, La Paloma Triste was an oasis in the desert. The gas heat and stove were comforting while power across the state flickered on and off. The property manager was very communicative and we were surprised that we both had cell service at the house. The house and surrounding lands were so beautiful and the stars at night, incredible. Highly suggest!

Great location and spectacular views!
Very close to west entrance of the park. House is one mile off the highway, on a dirt road. Arrive before sun goes down, or else difficult to find. Great directions otherwise. House is clean and basic amenities are available, rustic but comfortable. Would be nice to have some additional chairs outside other than swing in the porch. Enjoyed the birds every morning, sunrise, sunsets and amazing night sky. Again, great location.

Great Location with Amazing Views
La Paloma Triste is an awesome location with fantastic desert views! The sunrises and sunsets are not to be missed. Also, a great location for stargazers. the night sky was amazing and the timing of our stay was perfect as there was a visible comet to the northwest. This is an older property, but that is fine with us and everything is in good repair. Everything you need is provided to accommodate your stay and it is a comfortable home. When needed, the property manager's were easily reached and very knowledgeable about the home and area. One bonus, we had cell phone coverage at this location, some areas do not. We typically bring a Sat Phone when coming to this region of the state. Our family of three couldn't be happier with this vacation! Thank you for sharing this property with us! Highly recommended!
