About this house rental

Sitting on 25 acres with 2,500 feet of private shoreline on a point surrounded by water in northern Minnesota's leading vacation destination, this Arts & Crafts lakefront estate home built by the descendants of Frank Lloyd Wright is truly magnificent. Abutting the Crow Wing State Forest, this stunning property on Lake Ossawinnamakee provides a high degree of privacy on one of the nation's cleanest lakes. The main lodge, modeled after the style of renowned architects Greene & Greene, was built in 2003 and won that year’s national award for Best New Residence, as well as being featured in a number of publications. The history of the property dates back to 1917, when the original cottage was constructed for use as a family retreat. It is now used as a guesthouse and can be rented additionally.

The property is rich in both Native American history and sublime natural beauty. Located on the shores of Muskie Bay, the estate is situated on a lake that is seven miles long and considered one of the best bass fishing lakes in the state. It is within a short drive from the country's largest Native American reservations. Reflective of this region’s history, the site was the center of the 1799 war between the Ojibwa and Dakota tribes, and the home is appropriately decorated with many pieces of Native American artifacts from both traditions.

There is also a sauna and two docks. The property is located in close proximity to many activities in the area, including world-class golf courses, water sports, fishing and hunting. Available for additional rates are a concierge, cook, massage therapist, and yoga instructor, all of whom are committed to making your holiday relaxing, effortless and fun. We also rent out the Pontoon for 350$ a day plus gas. Canoes are free to use.

The hosts don’t hover and trust you with their over 100-year family history and a cabin that is crafted to fit into the woods and the surrounding waters without being obtrusive. It has everything: A kitchen to create gourmet meals (well, this time we did have to donate some measuring cups!), cozy bedrooms, and a stocked safe fire pit just to name a few. Really, I am at a loss to write a review suitable to this rental, but a poem, "Up North" by Suzanne Kindler sums up this property:. "It’s the place people go to escape, A place made of cabins, pine trees and lakes But no matter how far you drive, There’s no sign to say “you’ve arrived” So just follow your heart till you find… Your special place that brings peace of mind As you breathe in the air and unwind… Your cares are all left behind It’s no mystery where the northwoods start When you arrive Up North you’ll know In your heart."

The 4 bedroom "arts & craft" cottage is a rare and unique lodging. We also enjoyed the 2 bedroom "caretaker's cabin which had the same "charm" as the main cottage. The kitchen is fully stocked with spices, condiments and oils which is a great amenity. Everything was working - the spa, steam shower, wifi, smart tv's, pontoon, fishing poles and the canoes. Abbey, our host, responded immediately to any requests we had and plus a pleasure to get to know. Abbey also arranged a home chef (Chef Kara) to cook a family meal, four courses for 11. It was one of our highlights.

We booked this property to celebrate the upcoming wedding for one of my best friends. We had a group of 6 guys and this property allowed for comfortable sleeping for all with plenty of space to spread out. Amazing kitchen with more amenities then you can use in four days, outdoor grill, mutiple fire places, and views of the lake from nearly 360 degrees. Close to golf, Crosslake entertainment, and various other tourist areas in the Brainerd Lakes area. Highly satisfied and would recommend to anyone looking for an option for a medium to large size group!!!

My favorite moment from our recent stay was sitting on a paddleboard in the middle of the bay, watching my kids play in the vast open space between the main house and the original cabin. This property was built for relaxation. And creating memories. Our party included a six-year-old, an eight-year-old, a ten-year-old, four forty-somethings and a pair of octogenarians. Every single person found a place to relax or play. If the kids weren't kayaking, they were fishing off the dock. If they weren't fishing, they were playing badminton in the grass. The adults lounged on the docks, in the hammock, by the multiple fire pits. I hesitate to call it a cabin, as it feels more like a lodge. The structure itself is marvelous. I'm searching my mind for a single room without an expansive water view. Nope, they all look out onto the lake. Whoever designed it was thoughtful, creating persistent and generous water views in a structure that feels modern in flow and yet warm in personality. The rooms are large, the closet space ample. The kitchen is designed for socializing. Don't get me started on the dining room. We ate there every evening while we talked and gazed out at the lake. The house features an impressive library and art collection, none of it hidden away, so we felt more like a good friend had given us the keys to their place, and we were sharing their space. We told the kids to look and, if they must touch, to do so lightly. I think they were charmed by the opportunity to experience the art and were thus extra careful. Kids. They surprise you. The caretaker, Lisa, was friendly and attentive, as was the owner, John. Both are very easy to talk to. I can't think of a single thing that we needed that was not on the premises, in ample supply. The fireplace is lovely, as is the sauna. We could have stayed another week. Time flew by. We'll be back.

Fabulous cabin and setting. The cabin is as described. We had a dinner party for 16 and the place easily handled the group and our friends raved about the setting and decor. Thanks John for a memorable time. Kevin R

Wonderful property
Our second stay at this beautiful location, and it did not disappoint. The property and home are beautiful and we all felt so relaxed. From fishing, to cooking on the grill, to just hanging out together, we could not have asked for a better visit. The bedrooms were very neat and clean The gourmet type kitchen lent itself to constant socializing and wonderful meal preparation! We cannot wait to come back, hopefully for a longer stay! Highly recommended!!

The property was exactly as advertised - beautiful and very comfortable. The house is really something with great spaces and tremendous history. Thanks to John as well as Stacy Blue at Lake State Concierge and Lisa Lindstrom. And a special thanks to PJ Severson who made a fantastic meal for a special day. We would (will) return any time.

Our family vacation “Christmas In July”
Our family vacation “Christmas In July”
My Christmas gift each year to my family is a vacation in July, to spend quality time together while having fun experiences to cherish. I chose this place mainly because of the verse on the fireplace mantle “To everything there is a season”. It is a beautiful, well maintained property, with plenty of room for our family of 10. We enjoyed a fishing excursion and a private chef to prepare our fish and meal. The rest of our time there was spent on the property enjoying the pontoon boat, canoeing, water skiing, tubing (which we purchased while there) and swimming. We brought steaks, etc, to cook in the grill, enjoying a sit down meal together at the large dining table for 10. Each night we sat around the campfire, enjoying s’mores, and quiet reflection. Our time had to be cut short because of my mothers failing health, but it was a gift of a lifetime to my family. I just feel blessed for the love we share and thankful for Gods guidance always.
