Terlingua Sky is a modern solar powered home with rustic flare and amazing mountain views, located on a hilltop near the Terlingua Ghost Town. With two bedrooms, two full baths, an open plan living room, dining room, and kitchen, plus great porches, you’ll have plenty of room to relax and enjoy the tranquility of the Big Bend. The amazing views of the Chisos Mountains are simply breathtaking.
Named for our amazingly clear skies, Terlingua Sky, is perfectly situated for enjoying awe inspiring views at any time of day or night. Sunrises are unparalleled thanks to unobstructed views of the sun rising over the Chisos Mountains to the east. Daytime views include endless horizons of scenic mountains in the US and Mexico. Sunset views will find you looking more to the east than the west, as the reddening rays of the sun light up the mountains with dynamic displays of color and light. Nighttime views of the starry skies or bright moon are inspirational. The stars at night truly are big and bright deep in the heart of Big Bend country.
While you’ll be tempted to spend all your time outside, you’ll definitely find the inside to be inviting, comfortable, and visually appealing. The home is solidly built with heavy gauge steel structural supports and an all metal roof. The exterior has a classic stucco finish and the interior is beautiful wood and tile. All the furnishings were selected for comfort and style. The master bedroom has a king-sized bed and the second bedroom has a queen. Both have private bathrooms with stylish tile showers. The living, dining, and kitchen area is open and spacious. Perfect for enjoying time together with your family or friends. Of course, privacy is also important. That’s why the interior walls are all insulated for sound dampening.
The home is brilliantly designed for both comfort and eco-efficiency. The professionally designed solar power system provides ample power for all the modern comforts, including a highly efficient air-conditioning system. Extensive shading, insulation, and high-quality windows ensures that the home requires minimal use of the air-conditioning or heating systems. Take advantage of our cool summer nights and warm winter days by opening the windows and enjoying fresh desert air. The shaded porches allow you to enjoy the outdoor views and breezes without being overwhelmed by the desert sun. They also shade the house and help provide comfort inside. For rare occasions when the solar array and large battery bank does not provide enough power, the home is equipped with an auto-start back-up generator. Regardless of power consumption, you will never run out of electricity.
Water is rare and precious in the desert. Water at Terlingua Sky comes from the sky. An extensive rain catchment system collects rainwater and stores it for future use. We request that guests conserve water as much as is comfortable. Our first concern is for your comfort. The rainwater is filtered and treated for household use. However, it is not officially tested and approved as potable. We provide bottled water for drinking, making coffee, cooking, and any other human consumption.
Most of our guests are coming out here to explore Big Bend National Park, the Rio Grande River, Big Bend Ranch State Park, and the Terlingua Ghost Town. Terlingua Sky is perfectly located for easy access to all these local attractions, but just far enough off the beaten path to enjoy privacy and solitude. After all you probably didn’t drive hundreds of miles into the middle of nowhere just to be crowded by noisy or nosy neighbors.
As our guests, you will be able to pursue all sorts of wild adventure or history of the parks and river, the lively social scene with art, dining, and live entertainment in the Ghost Town and other local venues, explore the nearby ruins from the heyday of Terlingua Cinnabar mining, or simply relax and unwind. However you decide to spend your time under the Terlingua sky, you’ll be able to leave here as exhausted or refreshed as you want. Don’t worry if you don’t get to do it all in one visit. You’re welcome to return time and time again.

This is a great home to stay at . It has everything you need. The views are awesome . I had a question and emailed the owners and they responded very quickly. This is a great home for a family to stay at.I recommend staying here very highly.

Great place to stay! Very well maintained, secluded and clean cabin and property. Check in and out was easy. Had a question and property manager responded quickly. We loved it so much we stayed an extra night. The beds were comfortable. The kitchen well stocked with everything imaginable. Plenty of towels, bed linens pillows and blankets.The sunrise and sunsets were gorgeous. You are literally surrounded by mountains. You are close to restaurants and there is one small store. Big Bend National Park is only about 10 minutes away.
The road to the cabin is rough but if you drive slowly it's not too bad. We have a Kia Cadenza. Don't know how hard it would have been if it was raining for days.
Looking forward to a return visit.

The house exceeded our expectations. The beds were very comfortable with higher quality sheets than many VRBO provide. The split system had no trouble keeping us comfy cool when the temps were in the mid-90's and tended to not be needed at night. Everything was clean. Everything we needed was there, from toiletries to laundry pods to drinking water. The grill was clean and ready to use.
The directions to the house were spot on, and as long as we took it really slow, the roads did not cause any problems for our rent-a-wreck Corolla. We would not have been confident about traveling with that car on those roads after dark, but luckily there was never a reason to. Star gazing and TV kept us at the house after a day of hiking at Big Bend anyway! It took us roughly an hour to get from the house to visitor centers at Panther Junction, Chisos Basin and Castelon, and another 15 minutes further to Rio Grande VC. The park is huge.
But the best part was the spectacular view of the Chisos from the front outdoor seating area. Each morning, I'd settle into one of the patio chairs with a pot of coffee and watch the sunrise paint the sky and mountains in an everchanging display of color and light. Truly magical.

Our party had four adults. We spent the majority of our time in surrounding Big Bend/Lajaitas region. Mesmerized by the beautiful skylines changing color from hour to hour throughout the day. The evening hours at the property, that sits on top of the hill, afforded us blazing sunsets and glorious sunrise’s. The property is close enough to Terlingua to eat at local restaurants and be back in a matter of minutes. We especially enjoyed the “Star Light” restaurant. We shopped at the local store as we waited for our table. We explored the old Terlingua cemetery, drove from Boquillas to Santa Elena and numerous spots in between. We especially liked the newly opened fossil exibit south of Panther Junction on the Marathon highway. The beds were comfortable, extra blankets and pillows were available, plenty of towels, toiletries, paper products and bottled water. The entire house is off grid with solar panels, rain water reclamation tanks and a propane generator for backup on property. Smart TV, Wi-Fi worked great too… surprisingly we had several ’bars’ of ATT cell coverage. As former mid eighties students of SRSU, we were taken aback to witness the growth of this area since then. TWO different gas station in THE NATIONAL PARK! Our truck loved the dirt road adventures in and out of the park. Traveling the dirt road to the house, to locate road signage requires everyone’s attention & eyes to see/read & negociate 1 hairpin turn. Fun Terlingua living…Big Bend Gods country!!

We stayed here in March 2023 during Spring Break to visit Big Bend NP. The location enabled us to sleep well and still get to the park early enough to hike Emory Peak and for extensive visits on other days.
When we got the check in information we learned that the tap water is not potable because it's recycled rain water. Plenty of bottled water was supplied by the host so that was not an issue. The hosts' explanation of the system was educational and inspiring. I would've liked to know about the water before committing to the place, but over all everything worked out fine.

This place is very secluded and we enjoyed viewing the sunrise and night sky from the home (and not having to drive a distance to get away from light pollution). Good location to get to Big Bend and also local restaurants. The road to get to the home is challenging but okay if you take it slow in a non-low clearance vehicle. Water limits require some adjustment but house provided what we needed. We enjoyed our stay and are glad we made the long trip out to the Big Bend area. Thanks for sharing the home with us.

This was a very nice home, plenty roomy for 4. Beautiful views. Only downside is road to property is rocky but we had an suv and just had to go slow. Owner gave us details about roads and directions so we were aware of rocky roads.Also drive into Big Bend National Park is a distance probably 45 min, however we knew this coming here.There isn’t lodging much closer to park.
Ghost town Terlingua is nice place to go visit, shop a little and eat out. Loved High Sierra restaurant. Only about 10-15 minute drive into town from property.

Love so enjoyed our stay in Terlingua Sky. Perfect name. I only gave 4 stars for accuracy of discrription because they don't list all the amenities. There's a covered patio all around the house so you stay in the sun or avoid the wind. There are charcoal grill and a fire pit. Great private location.

This place is better than described. I’ve never seen a “rental” so nicely decorated. The kitchen is fully stocked, beds both very comfortable, bathrooms not only very functional but beautiful. Lots of space to unpack - closet and drawer space. Great outdoor area too and wait until you see the stars at night. The road is as described and slow going but it’s still only about five minutes from main road where you are very close to restaurants and bars and of course the National Park. Stay here, you won’t regret it!

The house and views are top notch & very close to Terlingua Ghost town (1.9 miles), about 15 mins to Big Bend or Lajitas. Just be prepared for dirt road - you get excellent directions. I wouldn’t stay anywherelse but Terlingua Sky!

The house is secluded (no nearby neighbors) on a hillside with an excellent view of the multiple mountain ranges. Sunset glow on the mountains is amazing. Nice front porch with a table for dining outside. House is elevated above Terlingua and Study Butte. Furniture was relaxing and functional. Plenty of cooking supplies and good appliances. Wifi was good. Bed was comfy. I will likely rent this house again in the future. Communications with Janet were great. She was quick to reply to emails. A few minor issues: shower/bathtub drain is slow, no instructions on how to use gas heater (I figured it out). Access note: dirt road to house requires decent vehicle clearance (not for Porsches, Corvettes, McLarens, GT350/500s)...I bottomed out my Porsche 911 multiple times and had to remove small boulders from the road. My Audi S5 would've been fine. Shortest and smoothest route is 1.9 mi of dirt road. Most cars will do fine, just not low-clearance sports cars.

Dark Skies & Privacy!
Exactly what we were looking for. This property is off the grid, so there are solar panels & rain containers, along with a generator. The photos don't do this place justice. Very nice & comfy. We had issues with the kitchen lights turning off with the a/c running, but that's to be expected. (We cooked by lanterns). Beds were comfy & lots of room to set up our telescopes & cameras to view the stars. Would definitely stay here again.

A solar system that works well! The A/C worked very well, surprisingly! Well appointed kitchen, without a dishwasher, but its solar. Bathroom doors are not solid, more like a fence. Overall though, a good experience, better than most in the desert.

This home on the mountain was just perfect. The place was nicely set up and fit our needs. It is remote, but so quiet and relaxing to watch the sun rise and set. It was hot already, but the low humidity helped. Great place to unwind after exploring the area for the day.

We enjoyed the seclusion of the property as well as its proximity to Terlingua Ghost Town and central location between Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park. The unit is very comfortable for 2 couples or a family. Be aware that water in this desert environment is more limited than what you are accustomed to. Also, the views from the house are fantastic, but I recommend first arriving during daylight hours.

Great Big Bend Jumping Off Place
Terlingua Sky was everything we hoped for. We stayed five nights. We ate several meals including all breakfasts in as well as sampling the local restaurants. It was very close to both Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park so we spent very little time getting to the areas we wanted to see. I would recommend it without reservation.

We had a wonderful time staying at Terilingua Sky. The house was very clean and modern. It made for a comfortable stay with all the appliances we needed, as well as electricity and running water. It was located in a great spot, only about a 20 minute drive from the entrance to Big Bend National Park. We had a really great time and would stay here again in the future.

Perfect place to enjoy Big Bend
We stayed at this house on the hill overlooking Terlingua for our vacation to BBNP and loved it. The house was comfortable, well equipped, clean, and had great views at sunrise, sunset, and the hours in between. We would definitely stay there again if we ever come back to the area. It is somewhat remote from the town up a dirt road, but that adds to the ambiance of being in Texas.

Pleasantly surprised!
During the heat of August, this was a comfortable cabin to come back to after exploring Big Bend NP. We had no problems with the water, air conditioning, electricity or any of the kitchen or laundry facilities. The night sky was amazing as was the mountain views to the east. Our Subaru Outback had no problems with the 2 mile gravel road and it was really easy to find. Memorable stay!

This home is clean, safe, offers AMAZING views of the park and sunrises as well as being completely off the grid. A/C was WONDERFUL in summer. Water was available for EVERY need. The road in is not too bad at all. The driveway itself right up by the house might be a little tough for low clearance vehicles but otherwise the the road in should not preclude someone from staying. We hope to be lucky enough to stay here again! STAY HERE Y’ALL!!!!

Terlingua Sky doesn't disappoint!
Beside the nice amenities, the commitment to conservation in this environment is simply excellent. We had no issues with the solar-powered generator, conserved water every chance we could (submariner showers, camping-like dish washing). The property itself provides stunning views and a welcome respite after hiking Big Bend trails. Close to Terlingua Ghost town for eating out or groceries, but far enough away to provide complete silence, dark skies, unobstructed sunrise views, capture of bird songs on my Cornell app. I suggest arriving during daylight, so as not to miss the turn to the house. There is a good grill and small firepit as well as outdoor furniture, modern appliances so a nice evening spent one time at the house. I loved every minute of my stay and will try to book again.
