About this villa rental
This gorgeous 3-story almond-wood house is surrounded by tropical beauty, in the midst of a what seems like a nature park. Monkeys, coati-mundis, anteaters and many other species daily visit the 2-acre property, while toucans and parrots glide by overhead. All this, yet only 300M/ yards from one of the loveliest sand beaches in Montezuma! The outstanding architectural design offers two stories of living space and an observation deck on the third level. The observation deck is the place to enjoy your morning coffee as you watch the tropical animals and birds in the surrounding jungle canopy. The house sleeps 4-6 adults quite comfortably, with three bedrooms and three bathrooms. There is an outside shower for rinsing off after the beach as well as an inside shower with hot water. Each floor has an open area to sit and enjoy the tropical trees and flowers. You'll feel the stress melt away as you listen to the peaceful sound of the stream that runs by the house.

Amazing!
We absolutely loved this place. We traveled here with our three children (14,12, and 7). The property is lovely. There is a beach within walking distance, Donna and Tito are wonderful hosts, and it's not too far from Montezuma. We would absolutely recommend this to others.

Perfect Jungle House
Beautiful property overflowing with flowers & animals. We saw more animals at Casa Montezuma than any other location we stayed in Costa Rica. A true jungle house experience! Donna is a gem & welcomed us like old friends. Can’t wait to go back!

Stay in the jungle
We loved it here. All the common areas are outdoors and we saw as much wildlife from the porches here as anywhere else in Costa Rica. Donna and Tito were always available if we had an questions. A beach with very few people is only 400 meters away. It is a couple kilometers down a dirt road outside of Montezuma, but the road was not too bad. Great experience!

This property is beautiful and unique! We stayed for 6 days in mid-March and loved it. We were looking for a place off the beaten path, where we could enjoy tranquility and seeing lots of animals. Casa Montezuma was perfect for that! The amount of animals that came to visit the house was incredible: coati mundis, tons of capuchin monkeys, howler monkeys, agoutis, variegated squirrels, iguanas, lizards, white-throated magpie-jays, hummingbirds, butterflies… Howler monkeys were “howling” (it sounds more as if there was a dinosaur in the area) several times a day. It was amazing to wake up to the sounds of nature (be ready to wake up very early… like 4:00am with the song of the chacalala and a bit later the howler monkeys). You will get used to go to bed early and wake up early… But it’s so worth it! It’s the best time to see animals and the temperature is cooler. If you are a nature lover, this is the place for you!The house is airy and open. Bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchen are all screened, though, so animals cannot get inside. We barely so any mosquitoes, as it was the dry season. I was actually surprised by the lack of bugs. Most of the structure is made of almond wood, which is strong and beautiful. The three levels are fun to hang out different times of the day and observe animals. The house is very clean and has everything you need (including beach towels and beach blankets). The beach is just a few minutes walking down the road (a very quiet road). We mostly had the beach all to ourselves. Going to places nearby, like restaurants, supermarkets or interesting spots, is easy by taxi (there is also a local bus that runs several times a day). Your hosts, Tito and Donna, will lend you a cell phone with a list of taxi drivers. Luis was our driver for most of our outings… but he was more of a tourist guide! He gave us plenty of information about the area, he stopped on the way to cut some sugar cane or get cashew nut fruit from the trees. He also recommended the best local restaurants. Our trip wouldn’t have been the same without Luis’ guidance. Donna and Tito were great hosts! Very flexible and accommodating. They also gave us recommendations and were available any time we had questions. They were never intrusive, though. Thank you, Donna and Tito for providing a wonderful stay. Your house is a jewel and we are already missing it!

Jungle paradise!
This home is amazing! We loved the open air living areas and observation deck. So much fun to see monkeys and other wildlife up close! We loved floating in the tide pools at the beach that is within walking distance, we also really enjoyed a walk to Playa Grande from Montezuma! The hosts have paid great attention to detail, they’ve including everything needed to make our stay comfortable, beach blankets, beach bag, yoga mats, games, kitchen supplies, bikes, books, etc. The hosts were a wealth of information and super helpful and friendly. Such an amazingly peaceful location, The landscaping is pristine, I loved hearing the sounds of the waves and jungle while we slept. Thank you for an awesome stay!! Highly recommend!

We just spent a glorious month and a half at Casa Montezuma. The house is beautiful, well-equipped, and gets visits from all kinds of creatures -- coatis, agoutis, monkeys, hummingbirds, butterflies, tiger herons, you name it. Although there are a few other houses around, it feels very private and is very quiet. It's a short walk to the beach (recommend bringing water shoes as there are some rocks) and a 10-minute taxi ride to town. Best of all was Tito and Donna's hospitality. You could't ask for kinder, more responsive hosts. We got to know Tito well and miss him already! We highly recommend this property if you're looking for a quiet place to relax and enjoy nature.

We had a wonderful time in Casa Montezuma. Tito was such a great host and helpful with everything. The people in the area are all very welcoming , open and extremely friendly. The house is one of a kind, with its open living spaces and the unique architecture. It has nice rooms and is equipped with everything we needed. The kids loved playing around the house all day long and feeling Chuletta the pig. We went to the beautiful beach everyday and often had it for ourselves. It was incredible to see, how the beach looked different everyday, because of the tides.Being so close to nature and especially to the monkeys, was an incredible experience. Laying in the hammock, watching the monkeys in the trees, is my new favorite thing to do.We stayed to weeks without a car. We sometimes took a taxi to get groceries and to get around, or walked. We also went to the Calala Lodge for a pool day and did a made up treasure hunt on the Cabuya Island with the kids. For me personally, it was a challenge with the open spaces and bugs. I wasn't aware, that the house is that open and that I need to go outside to get to the bathrooms, which I was scared of at nights. When we arrived, the rainy season started early and so we had a lot of bugs and quite few mosquitos. Still, I would highly recommend staying in Casa Montezuma, when you want to be close to the nature. I miss all these jungle sounds and the ocean.Ask Tito for the best spot to swim at low tide. He can also give you the number of a very nice neighbour who makes wonderful pizza and bread, if you want a break from cooking.

Absolutely Delightful!
Wonderful time! The house is absolutely as advertised. Both the owner, Donna, and on site manager, Tito, were exceedingly helpful in every way possible. We enjoyed so many days of sightseeing and exploring but also enjoyed simply staying at the house. I must say, we enjoyed the beach every single day! Our go to Taxi driver, Tony, took great care of us taking us to excellent local restaurants and even a day in Santa Teresa.
Unfortunately due to the unforeseen COVID-19 virus we felt we should return to the States. So much to our sorrow, after seven weeks there we left a week early. Donna and Tito could not have been more supportive and offered to let us stay in the house for an indefinite stay if we had needed. It was a hard decision to leave early. Without our even asking, Donna refunded us our unused days. If our travels bring us back to this area of Costa Rica we would definitely choose this property again! Thank you Donna and Tito for everything. In these difficult times we wish all the best for Donna, Tito, Tony, and all of the other wonderful people we met.

This is the perfect house to experience it all. The beach and the wildlife. Everything you need is in the house and the owners are very friendly and extremely helpful in all your Costa Rica needs and questions . We will be back as soon as we can. Wonderful place. Incredible architecture. We could not have asked for anything better .

A Wonderful Costa Rica Experience
This was our second time staying at Casa Montezuma in two years. In 2017 our family of 5 stayed over Christmas and had such an amazing experience that we decided to return this year. The property, unfortunately, was not available over Christmas, so we booked two weeks in early December. Two weeks earlier actually made a bit of a difference in terms of bugs (which were virtually non-existent our first time) and the amount of wildlife. The capuchin monkeys were less plentiful and there were not as many birds to enjoy. Still an amazing experience however and the weather was amazing. One thing to be prepared for is that you will likely get up very early (howler monkeys start at about 5:00 am!) and be ready for bed by about 8:00 pm.
Tito obviously knew we were pretty familiar with the house and area this time and left us pretty much to ourselves, but was always available for help if necessary. You really can't go wrong with this place as long as you know what you are getting into with this area of Costa Rica. We love it but for sure do your research regarding the area. The house is very much as described in the listing and the many very positive reviews.
The one minor disappointment we had was that the barbecue was not available for use as it had rusted out. We used this almost daily our first time and we really missed it. Being able to cook outside is much nicer in the heat and humidity. The kitchen is reasonably well set up, but I was stuck making most meals in the frying pan.

Off the beaten path retreat
We had a wonderful stay at Casa Montezuma with our two children ages 6 and 8. The house is perfect for nature lovers and kitchen is fabulous for anyone who enjoys cooking. Short walk to Playa Cedros and not far to Cabo Blanco, waterfalls, swimming holes, and lovely places to dine. Highly recommend! Tito and Donna were super helpful with directions and orienting to the accommodations. Our kids fell in love the Chuleta the Pig and we never tired of the beautiful bird sounds and the rainforest views.

Thank you Donna and Tito!!
Casa Montezuma is perfectly situated on the Nicoya Peninsula, halfway between the towns of Montezuma and Cabuya, our playgrounds during our stay. We visited Montezuma to ride horses on the beach, jump off waterfalls, fish for yellow fin tuna, and learn to surf. Cabuya was perfect for a hike or bike, or just to relax with dinner, music and dancing.
Back at the house, we could not have asked for a more relaxing atmosphere. The grounds and house are just as described, the perfect retreat for a family or small group. Tito, our host, who lives next door, offered help as needed but privacy otherwise. A friendly pig (Chuleta) and bikes for transport were much appreciated “extras”. And there is no need to book an animal tour at Casa Montezuma as the animals come to see you!
For seven glorious days the sounds of the forest drowned out any worries from home. Here it’s only “pura vida”. We can’t wait to return.

Absolutely spectacular villa: a beautiful peaceful and wildlife-filled retreat
I've stayed at a lot of rental homes. I've stayed in many incredible rental homes. This one is a gem beyond all gems. Had we stayed anywhere else, our visit to Montezuma would have paled in comparison to the enjoyment we got out of our trip last week. The villa is spectacular. It is roomy, it has fabulous outdoor space on all 3 levels, and the 3rd story observation deck is a birder's paradise. We got up before sunrise every morning to head up to the observation deck and watch the birds flit across the property: acaris, trogons, motmots, parrots, a heron building a stick nest in a tree just off the deck. Unbelievable! There were also several troops of howler monkeys in the trees around the property and several white-face capuchins that made an appearance from time to time. The adjacent stream attracted mammals such as agoutis to roam though the yard throughout the day.
We were shocked given the diversity of wildlife on the property that we had no bugs. None. All the windows are screened, but bugs were a non-existent problem even eating dinner and having drinks on the decks. The bedrooms were spacious, comfortable, and stocked with both ceiling fans and powerful floor fans to make nighttime sleeping very pleasant. The kitchen was fully stocked with any dishware or supplies could have possibly needed, there was a great supply of books and area guides that were incredibly useful, and the bathrooms and showers were extremely clean and well maintained.
Tito was the perfect host. He was very responsive and provided great information even before our traveling to Costa Rica began, he made arrangements to meet us to help us navigate to the home, gave a detailed tour of the property and home, and then made himself available at any time for questions or assistance. I had a problem with my Costa Rican cell phone plan that I purchased during our stay, and Tito was even gracious enough to add money to recharge my cell plan so that I could continue my cell service. We loved the time we got to spend with him and wished we could have stayed longer.
We joked about not wanting to leave a review at all as we want to keep others away -- we want this place for ourselves! If I win the lottery, consider Casa Montezuma off the market. I don't think another rental home could ever top this one. It was a trip of a lifetime -- the place, the people, the memories, and this amazing villa.

Perfect Montezuma Retreat
We absolutely loved Casa Montezuma. It was the perfect location for our stay in Southern Nicoya. Tito met us as soon as we arrived in town and was a fantastic host who was always available and helpful.
The house itself was beautifully designed - the photos don’t do it justice! We often felt like we were living in a treehouse with the indoor/ outdoor spaces being such a great feature, especially with abundance of wildlife to see. The thoughtful design allowed for good air flow during the night and protected you from the sun during the day.
The house had everything as detailed (except a working BBQ - the only one available was a small charcoal grill). The kitchen was great to work in. You had to be conscientious of waste of leaving food out or it would attract animals. Had a very nice camping-like feel.
We were travelling with our 2 1/2 year old daughter and 4 month old son. Our daughter loved walking around the property and meeting the many wild animals who casually stroll through. She also enjoyed giving Chuleta (“the pig”) some daily snacks.
The Montezuma area also has so much to offer. We enjoyed eating at the Sodas in town and did the waterfall hike and also drove to Santa Teresa for some sunset swims (although, as a note, the drive is rough and fun and leaving Montezuma certainly wasn’t necessary).
One thing our kids loved (and a trick to avoid the heat during the day) was spending some time at the pool at the nearby Calala Beach Lodge. If you buy some drinks or food, you can have access to their pool.
We recommend this to anyone! The place was a total highlight of our trip!

Your outpost in paradise
We saw monkeys, coati mundis, and blue morphos butterflies - in our first hour! By day three the monkey count neared 100z the observation deck is amazing. Tito took great care of us. This is rustic - you are in a tropical jungle area - and it’s an experience you will never forget.

Nice property in a beautiful garden with a very helpful and warm host
We had a great time at casa montezuma, exactly what we wanted: a bit of jungle and wildlife, close to the beach and not far away from restaurants and shops. Tito was amazing, always available for any of our questioms. And the kids loved Chuleta, the pig of the owner.

The house itself was perfect, everything about it was done in detail. The surroundings are almost in the jungle yet close to civilization. We could not have been more pleased. We loved it.

Would go back in a second. Relaxing, comfortable, beautiful beach, and assistance from kind man.
Beautiful property on the edge of the jungle with lots of coatis, white face and howler monkeys and acoutis. Rustic, very private charm with everything we needed. Tito was always available but never intrusive. He helped us with taxis so no car needed.

Perfect peaceful getaway
We adored Casa Montezuma! Its location was perfectly secluded, and in the middle of a wildlife corridor where an astonishing array of animals paraded past us on the porches every day, all day. I could have just spent all day lounging and watching the creatures. We enjoyed its proximity to the lovely Los Cedros beach as well. The house is comfy and well-equipped, and makes you feel like you are in nature at all times due to its design which brings the outdoors inside. A cell phone was provided by the owners to arrange local taxis to get into Montezuma or Cabuya. There was really no need to rent a car to explore the area, which reduced travel stress and saved money. The owner Tito was next door, and provided great information, conversation and friendship. What a lovely guy! We'd return in a heartbeat. Miss it already.

A one of a kind property!
Our family of five loved our stay at Casa Montezuma! We loved this unique hide away in the jungle - the rooms were comfortable, clean and provided everything we required. We really enjoyed spending time in one of the many outdoor living areas watching all of the wildlife. The property is secluded and beautiful but also close to gorgeous beaches, delicious restaurants and all the conveniences of town. Tito was very accommodating and made us feel right at home. We would certainly recommend this property to anyone visiting the area.

Tropical Dream Come True!
Imagine yourself living in a beautiful wooden tree-like house, surrounded by lush jungle with the sounds of birds and howler monkeys… and all the privacy and peace you want for an incredible vacation adventure! And yet, you are also very close to a fantastic beach as well as the road with a bus system for getting to close by towns for re-supply and/or dinners out. This place is beyond words because you need the sounds, views, jungle feel and appearance of animals to appreciate the real deal, though the photos do give you an accurate idea. Truly – the actual experience is so much more sensory rich and we plan to return soon!
We stayed here for two weeks during our winter break. It was everything a romantic vacation could be… bird and monkey watching in the mornings with coffee at the upstairs table. We walked up the road for a morning workout and took in the gorgeous views of the coastline. Beach time during the day and then back to the spacious yard and house for afternoon cocktails and dinner prep with fresh fish we bought at the local market. We occasionally went out to dinner with the ease of a bus or cab pick up. Donna was an absolute treasure in every way for information, guidance and logistics!
Although we were only two people, this house could easily hold three couples or a large family. The unique arrangement of the home with multiple bathrooms, deck space and the yard allows for privacy and room to hang out. Walking down the side road to Los Cedros beach is easy, biking to Cabuya is a fun trip and access to Montezuma via bus is just the right distance for dinner out but then coming back to your own very special Costa Rican paradise at Casa Montezuma.
We were thrilled with our time at Casa Montezuma and give it a 5 star rating in every way! We won’t be able to get to Costa Rica this winter but our plans are to be back at Casa Montezuma for winter break 2014/15!

Casa Montezuma is a great place to stay
I really enjoyed my stay at Casa Montezuma. The house itself was clean, well maintained and comfortable, and the kitchen had all the things you need to cook if you don't feel like going to town for a meal. The house is a beautiful wooden building surrounded by trees full of birds and monkeys. While sitting on the patio we also saw agoutis, bats, and raccoons. A cool breeze blew from the ocean, making morning and evening temperatures comfortable. And speaking of the beach, Playa de Los Cedros beach is a short walk away. I saw herons and pelicans perching on the rocks there. The friendly owners, Donna and Tito lived close by and were able to answer all of our questions. They often checked in with us to make sure we were comfortable, but were never intrusive. I would recommend Casa Montezuma to anyone. It is particularly well- suited to families and groups of friends.

Beautiful oasis
My sister and I stayed here for 4 nights. After a very dusty, dry drive, we arrived and felt as if we had entered an oasis. The grounds are so beautiful, with flowering trees and plants everywhere. The house is amazing, llwith lots of open air space. Very spacious, 3 floors, several bathrooms and 3 bedrooms. All with wonderful views. The kitchen is fully stocked with anything you need to prepare your meals. The town has 2 great markets to stock up with food. I am gluten intolerant and was able to find plenty, even rice pastas! Also, everywhere you look, there is a little personal touch that makes you smile. While we were there, we were visited by white faced monkees on several occasions, the coatamundi and the agoudi walk around the yard, and the parrots fly through, amongst so many others. You hear the howler monkees in the distance, and if you are lucky, they will come near and you can spot them also. It was really very enchanting. You can walk to the end of the road and hit the ocean and watch the surfers. Donna was so accomadating. She gave us a lift into town a couple of times, gave us bikes to use and was a wealth of information. We were able to walk to or from town, it is about a 1/2 hour walk. Great food in Montezuma, try the mint ice tea drink at the sushi place! The town is very friendly also, with a great beach and hiking areas. There is a river nearby that we spotted the pink spoonbill on several occasions. We fell in love with that place and with Donna, and feel as if we have made a new lifelong friend. I am counting down until I can return, and to definitely make this part of our stay again in Costa Rica. Thank you Donna.

Wonderful stay
If you're looking for a resort with air conditioned rooms this is not the place for you. We loved the open air spaces. It felt like a lovely wood tree house in the jungle with all of the necessities of home. Tito and Donna were helpful with all arrangements and super friendly (while also being respectful of our privacy). My kids commented on it being the best VRBO we've stayed at, and we've stayed at quite a few over the years. We got a thunderstorm pretty much every night, which had an extra spectacular effect in the open air house. Overall a great week there.

casa montezuma
This is a beautiful house in a gorgeous setting, with unexcelled service. The house is solidly built with fine detailing, especially the wood materials. It is clearly an architect designed house. There are 2 "living rooms," which are open terraces on the first and second floors. There is an observation station on the 3rd floor. All of these spaces bring the immediate tropical landscaping and the just removed jungle right to you. It's beautiful and it's peaceful.
You spend much of your time awaiting the animal visitors, when you aren't luxuriating in the vegetation. We never failed to get excited about the howler monkey sound show. The coatimundi came onto our terrace every morning. The agouti were wandering about off and on all day. The big treat was the capuchin monkeys, and their arrival was always heralded by some thrashing of jungle branches. The birds were exotic to us. The flowers a special treat.
It is peaceful back from the beach and road, but 3-4 minutes walk to the beach. You are away from the noise and kid/backpacking scene of Montezuma and other tourist towns. Cabuya is a small town with good food and easy access to that day's fish from the fishermen who caught them.
Donna added a great deal to our stay. She is an American transplant and she and her husband Tito know everyone and everything about them. They are interesting and intelligent people, and Donna helped us in little and bigger things. She made all the arrangements for a car rental when I asked, down to details of delivery, costs, timing; and this had nothing to do with our house rental. We were left to our privacy and quiet, but she and Tito live on the property, and she was readily available for requests and questions. She even provided us with a loaner cell phone. There were no disappointments here.
We want to return. We want to stay longer, maybe very much longer.

Pura vida means pure life!
We arrived at Casa Montezuma and were instantly surrounded by what the Ticos call Pura Vida. It means PURE LIFE and it was just that. The house is nothing short of amazing, with beautiful and charming architecture, location and landscape... but it's the surrounding life that makes you feel at home (Heaven on Mother Earth) We were able to cook and barbecue, and walk to the beach in the moonlight. We saw Monkeys, Humming Birds and Agoutis everyday. It was like staying in a national park... as every day we say new animals. If you are visiting Costa Rica to see National Parks, you should stay here. We saw more wildlife from our observation deck over morning coffee than we did in any of the parks we visited.
We had the most authentic experience from a local perspective. Much better than a hotel.
We rode the on premise bikes to get fresh caught fish, delicious bread, pastries and coffee, and to the national park. Aside from all of this things that we did or saw on our honeymoon, we felt an overall sense of peace that was unlike anywhere else we stayed during our month in Costa Rica. The property is safe, serene, and perfectly designed for the tropical climate (plus it's in a blue zone where people typically live to be over 100.... likely due to the purest and best tasting tap water ever!)
It is close enough to wonderful adventures like Tortuga Island, but away from the hustle and noise of hotel/hostel living. Casa Montezuma was hands down our favorite place we stayed during our month long honeymoon in Costa Rica. We had the best time even without a car..! (And we only used one of the three gorgeous bedrooms) We are looking forward to our next visit as soon as possible. Our only word of advice... Enjoy!
