About this house rental
New to VRBO and HomeAway, this spacious lakeside home in South Hero is perfect for a relaxing family vacation or multi-generational family reunion.
Located in South Hero, Vermont (30 minutes from Burlington) our family-friendly lake house features five bedrooms, three floors of living space, and is situated on 300 feet of lake front. Recently renovated, it has a lovely modern kitchen and pantry. A set of steps takes you from the back lawn down to the lake where you can fish and swim. During most of the summer, the dock is set up. You can spend the entire week just exploring the Islands. But it's an easy drive to Burlington, Shelburne Farms or Stowe. It is also one of the best places in Vermont to bike as the roads are quiet and relatively flat. Whether you come in the spring, summer or fall, you will love the lake house. We are conveniently located 5 minutes from the Plattsburgh-Grand Isle ferry.
The Lake House features three floors of living space. There is plenty of room to spread out and kick back. The first floor has an open living plan with hardwood floors and ceiling fans. A wide kitchen adjoins the dining room and living room. (The dining room table seats six and the kitchen table seats four.) A bathroom on the first floor with a shower makes post-beach rinse off's a breeze. A first floor bedroom offers a no-stairs option for older guests.
The winners of the bedroom lottery will love the large Master bedroom on the second floor. With panoramic lake views, it features a sitting area and a private limestone bathroom with a huge walk-in shower. Wake up to the most beautiful view of the lake imaginable.
Two additional bedrooms, a full bathroom and a laundry room complete the second floor. Each bedroom is quiet and cozy.
The third floor is where the kids usually hang out. As a "bunk room" with three twins, one full and one queen, it is open, airy and bright. A game area with Legos, board games and books keeps everyone busy.
Cook dinner on the gas grill on the deck while your family plays badminton or a game of catch on the lawn. Picnic tables, Adirondack chairs and lounge chairs are there for your use. Relax around a summer evening bonfire and toast some 'smores.
Electronic Amenities: Big Screen Television with cable, DVD Player, and hookups for an IPod or computer, WiFi Internet.
Distances:
Burlington - 23 miles (30 minutes)
Plattsburgh, NY - 9 miles via the ferry (about 35 minutes)
Montreal - 122 km (about 1.5 hours)
Check In: Please arrive no earlier than 4 pm as we need time to clean and prepare the house.
Check-Out: Please plan to depart no latter than 11 am.
Events: Due to insurance requirements, no parties or events are permitted.
Linens/Towels: Towels, pillows, linens and comforters are provided.
Dogs: Allowed only with advance permission. We may be able to accommodate your pet, but will need to discuss it when you book your vacation.
Boats: The dock does not have a boat launch. But don't worry. There are plenty of places around the Islands where you can launch your power boat or sailboat. To the north, North Hero Marina rents canoes, kayaks, pontoon boats and a 15-foot fishing boat. Hero's Welcome General Store also rents non-motorized vessels. To the south, Apple Island Marina rents row boats, power boats, pontoon boats, kayaks, and canoes. Boat launches maintained by Vermont's Department of Fish & Wildlife can be found at Keeler Bay, Allen Point in South Hero, Sand Bar in Milton, Vantines in Grand Isle and Stephensen's Point in North Hero.
Biking: Because of the flat roads and gorgeous scenery, many bike tours come through the area, including VBT, Discovery Bicycle Tours, Backroads and Bike Vermont. The Lake House is within close proximity to the Lake Champlain Bikeway, a 363-mile principal route around the entire Lake and along the Richelieu River to Chambly, Québec. You can also take the Bike Ferry across “the Cut” ( just 200 feet) which takes you on a 14-mile recreational trail called the Island Line Trail. If you would like to rent bikes for a few days, bike rentals for kids and adults are available at the Allenholm Farm.
Sandy Beaches and State Parks: There are four state parks in the Islands along Rt 2: Sandbar, Grand Isle, Knight Point and North Hero. You can find sandy beaches, places to picnic, walking/hiking trails and boat rentals. If you are looking for a terrific beach, the Sand Bar State Park has a good one. The smooth, sandy lake bottom remains shallow well out from shore, making this an ideal swimming spot for children. That, and the uninterrupted length of sandy beach, very high quality water in this section of the lake, and well-kept facilities combine to make Sand Bar the most visited day park in the state. Day passes are available.
Fishing: Around the Lake Champlain Islands you will find Lake Trout, Landlocked Atlantic Salmon, Yellow Perch, Northern Pike, Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Panfish, Bowfin, Carp, Longnose Gar, White Perch, Yellow Perch, Walleye, Northern Pike, Chain Pickerel, Bullhead, Panfish and Black Crappie. Lake Champlain Anglers maintains a website with over 60 pages about fishing in Lake Champlain. You might also like to visit the the Ed Weed Fish Culture Station and visitor center. It is the newest and largest of the five fish culture stations owned and operated by the state of Vermont. It is only 1.3 miles from our house.
Weddings: Vermont is one of the top wedding destinations in the world. The beautiful, pastoral Champlain Islands is one of the best places to tie the knot. The Grand Isle Lake House, one of the most popular wedding venues in the state, is just seven miles from our house.
Great Food: Rich soils and a year round temperature moderated by Lake Champlain contribute to the high quality of the Islands agriculture. You will eat very well here in the Islands! Our favorite restaurants are The North Hero House, The Blue Paddle and Shore Acres. Don't miss the Champlain Islands Farmers Markets -- May through September at the St. Rose of Lima Church. Snow Farm Winery, Vermont’s first commercial grape vineyard, is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for tours and tastings, but locals know that it’s best experienced in concert with live music outdoors on Thursday evenings. Weather permitting, Snow Farm brings in popular local acts to complement the sunset. The Islands are also perfect for pick-your-own outings. You can pick your own berries at Pomykala Farm in Grand Isle and pick your own apples at the local orchards. (We have three apple trees and one pear tree at the Lake House and you are welcome to eat as much as you like!)
Visit Farms: Right across the road, a lovely herd of cows graze and moo. You can also see farm animals at the Allenholm Farm where Fergie, the Scotch Highland Cow lives with some sheep, rabbits, goats, miniature horses and donkeys.
Fossils: If you look carefully, you can find small fossils embedded in the rocks on the beach at our house. (You are more than welcome to bring the fossil rocks home with you.) If you like fossils, the fossilized corals that make up the Chazy Reef on Isle La Motte are definitely worth a visit. Paleontologists believe the reef was formed almost half a billion years ago, when Lake Champlain was part of the shallow Iapetus Ocean. At the Goodsell Ridge Fossil Preserve, a well-marked path leads through the field to swirled skeletal remains of cephalopods and stromotoporoids. “Discovery Areas” are numbered and identified.
Motorcycle Touring: Come for a week and explore Vermont on your motorcycles. U.S Route 2 runs through the lake Champlain Islands on scenic, well maintained roads. The 40 - 50 miles between Alburg and Burlington's offers world-class class scenery with the Green mountains on one side and the Adirondacks on the other. Or ride north to St. Anne's Shine or south to Stowe. If you take the ferry, you can hop over to New York.
For questions, please email. I am happy to tell you more about the Lake House and look forward to hearing from you.

Another great year! Love the house and location, plan to be back again next year.

This is our third year staying here, and it was another wonderful visit. The location and waterfront are great, and the on-island amenities meet our needs. Our host responded quickly to our questions, as usual!

Fairly clean. Property outside could use care.
Great accommodations for eight people.
Had a huge 24 hour rain. Cellar flooded. Owner did not redo d to texts.

Overall good stay. Bedding needs updating. Some deep cleaning needed. Grill was not working which was disappointing. Clearing the growth obstructing the lake view would have been great.

We had a great visit again this year. The island was not heavily impacted by all of the rain, just a 2 1/2' water rise that is not a problem with this home. We are looking forward to next year's visit!

Property was beautiful. We had a lovely time and everyone enjoyed the house!

Our family comes together once a year for vacation and we have been to Lake Champlain four times. This was our first time in this house. The biking is outstanding. This house offers rides in all directions and a quiet road for walking or jogging. We also made frequent use of the lake access. The back deck is a great spot to hang out and take in the sunsets. The kitchen provided everything we needed to make the special meals we like to make on vacation. Everyone agreed that this was a perfect place to enjoy all our vacation activities.

South Hero Lake House
What a beautiful property! We were there mostly to sleep because of family obligations over the weekend. There were supposed to be 13 of us and it ended up being just 3. The house is definitely going to be a place we go back to with the entire family.....it will easily accommodate all of us and I can see many memories being made in the future.

We loved this home.
This was a wonderful house on the lake. Great location and the listing was very accurate. There was a croquet set in the shed and we had a blast playing on the huge lawn.
The sunsets were gorgeous and coffee on the large back deck looking out on the lake was so relaxing.
The owner added some personal touches that made us feel welcome and I would highly recommend this home to anyone looking to enjoy Vermont.

Great property, great location! Hope to be back!

Great for lots of people!
Wonderful for large groups. Only downside is difficult access to the water and having no visual of our "beach " from the house or deck...didn't affect the teens at all but a little boring for slightly handicapped grandfather! However, would definitely rent again.

We had a wonderful week. Plenty of beds. Only problem was access to the water. Very rocky and dangerous. We had a boat but nowhere to safely dock .

Beautiful home and location ... BUT
We love South Hero and the location of this house is perfect! The grounds of the home are absolutely beautiful, spacious, private and well maintained. The house itself is pretty and spacious. However, the house itself is in serious need of some upkeep (needs to be painted, broken furniture removed, needs new mattresses - ugh our backs, appliances don't work well). But my real issue is with the unresponsiveness of the property manager, Evan. We arrived on Saturday at 4 pm and very quickly noticed the refrigerator was not cold enough, even on the coldest setting. I reached out to Evan early Sunday morning and he called me back late in the day on Sunday, was apologetic and said he would come Monday morning to take a look. On Monday morning, Evan did come. He entered the house without even knocking and he shined a flashlight at the fridge (looking at nothing in particular) and said he would call a repair person but the fridge might need replacing. Next, I heard from him on Monday late in the day and he said that a repair person had "ordered a part" and I should unplug the fridge for 20 minutes and see if that helps. It didn't help. The repair person never came all week, Evan stopped responding to my emails and we had a lot of spoiled food. I even sent an email asking Evan to supply me with his office phone # so I could speak to a manager but he ignored that request too. Not worth the $ we spent to stay here.

Would Love to See More!
This property is large and comfortable and has everything you need in terms of kitchen and linens. I wish the property owner with do some pruning of trees and shrubs so the entire, incredible view could be seen from the house and lawn (only from the dock is the full mountain and sunset panorama visible...and it is breathtaking). Investment in pruning would increase the value of this property significantly. Renters who are interested in canoeing or kayaking should know that the water on this side of the island is VERY rough/windy/choppy. Our group loved the swimming and spent time in the wonderful, refreshing water every day, but we struggled to enjoy our kayaks.

Great location for a multi-generational group. Beautiful setting!

Great location and perfect for multi- family
We were a group of three families and dog. Kids slept on the third floor which made the trip very pleasant for the adults!
Great location, didn’t have an issue with sheets or beds like another reviewer but we also got the good bedroom. Note: the master is amazing and the other bedrooms were adequate.
There is a dock with a ladder (too shallow at the end for jumping) and a rock beach. Highly recommend water shoes for all people as the rocks are slippery and jagged. This appears to be due to the rock formation of the shores of the lake. There is a rock beach entry to the water as well - helpful for the dog and launching our kayak, but I’m glad we didn’t have a toddler on the beach.
House is set up well. Deck is fantastic. Plenty of seating inside as well.
Highly recommend bringing bikes as the bike causeway is beautiful and only 8 miles from the house. The ferry to Plattsburgh is a mile or so north - made it easy to visit auasable chasm - much faster and cheaper than the Burlington ferry.
House is not air conditioned but has lots of fans and temps dropped most nights so everyone was comfortable. Although the master has windows on three sides so I think we got the best room again!
Only suggestion to the owner: maybe put the felt pads on the bottom of the dining room chairs, really loud on the floors - see place is so great that this is my suggestion!

Nice location & size for multi family vacation
3 families had plenty of room to spread out. Awesome ‘kid’ room. Very nice master. Other two rooms were tight. Beds & sheets need updating throughout. Nice Fire pit, dock, big yard & deck to play/relax. Kitchen had lots of odds & ends but could use some organizing or replacement of most needed pots/pans. House could use a thorough cleaning. Close to lots to do in the area but nice quiet location w/ farm stand across the street & winery down the road.

Summer reunion locale to get away from it all and enjoy the lake
Waterfront is ideal for swimming, kayaking, and windsurfing. Location is peaceful and with the city of Burlington and the mountains all nearby.

A few issues which we solved- overall nice stay and a good time had by all.
Great property- Lake was beautiful and we even had a cat the kids loved. Close to all activities we wanted to do or within driving distance. Loved the area and Vermont.

Great house, property, and overall area!
We were thoroughly impressed with the house and property. The sunsets every night are amazing and the deck and yard are great for just hanging out and relaxing. I would highly recommend this property if you have a couple families and kiddos as the 3rd story is great to let the kids have their own space. The dock is great to access the water and tie off a raft to float around on. South Hero is a great little area as well.

Great location nice house
Spent the weekend here with family. House is good for a large group. Location is great. close to Burlington and ferries to New York with a beautiful view of the lake. House could probably have been cleaned a little better.

We had a wonderful family vacation at this beautiful home and location. Amazing views, tons of amenities, would definitely stay again! Very friendly and helpful owner and caretakers.

Definitely one of the finer rental properties in South Hero and Grand Isle.
Great for families and extended families. Master bedroom and bath are unusually nice, and the large third floor room is terrific for kids and teenagers.

Great place, perfect for families!
Great spot with fantastic views. Deck is great for relaxing and the backyard has great space for kids to play whiffle ball, etc. The dock is a short walk down from the backyard. We had kids ranging in age from 3 to 14 and they had a blast jumping off the dock, and fishing from it as well. We had kayaks with us as well and spent some time out in the lake on them. The house was clean and well equipped. Would recommend grabbing provisions in Burlington area. There are a number of stores on the island that can provide for daily necessities, though. Location is great, a number of state parks around for beaches. We jumped the car ferry over to Plattsburgh for a day, and spent a night in Burlington, too. The third floor is perfect spot to leave the kids, a lot of beds and plenty of space. For couples, the master bedroom (awesome), 1st floor bed and one of the second floor bedrooms are best. There is a small bedroom on the second floor that has a single bed. Gran Isle is beautiful. Would definitely rent here again and highly recommend. Peaceful, relaxing plenty of space.

Great family venue!
The house was beautiful - clean, large and well stocked. The setting is lovely and we watched the sunset and enjoyed great campfires. Sleeping arrangements worked well for our family, kitchen and outdoor grill provided great spaces for meals. We were all very satisfied.

589 W Shore Rd, S Hero Island, Vt
The house was great! Location was excellent and all accommodations were as stated, roomy, comfortable and clean. Only 2 VERY MINOR complaints. The TV was difficult to operate but the picture was excellent. Also the oak tree in the center of the yard blocks the view of the sunset from the deck. Trimming a few branches would make a significant difference. (However it probably helps prevent erosion, keeping the house from sliding into the lake so what can you do?)
Overall I would highly recommend this place to anyone, and if we vacation at Lake Champlain next year, would try to rent this house again.
