This is the second time we stayed at this property. The first time was I 2020.
The location is ideal. Publix is within walking distance and Sombrero Beach is about 1.5 miles. There is a nice walking/ bike path the entire way. Many restaurants and activities are close by. Irie Island Eats is one of our favorites. Keys Fisheries is another favorite. The Turtle Hospital is a must see.
The property was clean. The 4 bedrooms and 3 full bathrooms were perfect for our family of 7 adults and 1 baby. The kitchen has enough dishes, glasses, cutlery, etc. there is a coffee maker, toaster, and basic cook ware. Although the grill was clean and functional, we did not locate any grill tools. The dishwasher was not working, and we were compensated for the inconvenience. ( A new dishwasher was to arrive on the day we checked out.) The washer and dryer are full size. The property was stocked with plenty of beach towels and bath towels.
We used the balcony/porch a lot. We also used the swimming pool daily. We paid to have it heated for the week. ( This costs about $250, once taxes are added.) There are several lounge chairs and a table and chairs by the pool. The balcony functions as a roof over the pavers next to the pool, which gives some welcome shade.
We found the neighbors to be friendly.

Nice place, but the neighbor next door kept trying to boss us around and there isn't anywhere to park a trailer with a boat on it except in front of the house blocking all the carports. Great location to publix and the main road. Fishing off the dock proved worthless, but the manatees were cool.

The pool was great to come back to after long days on the boat.

'Cheap' Cabana
Nice property and nice view of the canal leading to the Ocean.
However, the floors throughout the house were absolutely disgusting. We consumed our own 2 boxes of Swiffer pads which barely made a dent. My friends daughter, who is still crawling, was left with her shins and the tops of her feet CONSTANTLY black throughout our stay. There were sightings (x3) as well of cockroaches in the kitchen surrounding the food we purchased.
I emailed multiple times to the Vacasa support team. After 5 days, (while still staying in the house) I finally got through to someone on the phone who shrugged me off and couldn't wait to get the local staff here to 'prep' for the next guests.
I will use VRBO but WILL ABSOLUTELY NOT if it routes me through Vacasa.

Worst vacation experience
We have been to Marathon multiple times (through VRBO) and really enjoy the area but I will never stay at a Vacasa managed home again. Worst customer service I’ve ever experienced in any industry. The location of the home was much further from Sombrero Beach than portrayed in both the listing AND verbally confirmed to me before booking. There were all kinds of maintenance issues including living cockroaches inside, which I was told was typical of the area. Again, I’ve stayed in this area multiple times and never had this issue. Not to mention this was the most barebones vacation rental I’ve ever stayed in. The 24/7 Vacasa line simply “enters a ticket” for every issue and tells you that they can’t do or guarantee anything, only the property manager can. When I finally did get the property manager’s phone number (clearly to her dismay because she just kept telling me “property managers don’t speak directly to guests”) she ended up passing me off to a General Manager who I’m supposed to be getting a contact number for. But that didn’t happen and she has since blocked my phone number. I hope many people read this review before booking. I unfortunately did not read all the reviews before I did. And ended up paying a lot of money for a house that wasn’t in the location I wanted and had cockroaches!!!

Sombrero Beach
First thing-- LOCATION. When booking on VRBO the listing is shown a lot closer to the beach/ocean. It is actually located just a few units down from the Publix grocery store. This made for a 35 minute boat ride from the house to open water. Upon arrival we found several large dead roaches and water bugs in the unit, not uncommon in the keys with the heavy rain fall earlier in the week. Property was listed to sleep 10 guest. We had a total of 9 including a 3 year old that slept in the king bed with us. No where near enough blankets/bedding to sleep everyone comfortably. The blankets that are provided are very thin. This unit is as bare bones as it gets. Raid cans left on patio floor fully accessible to a child. My brother thought he had left his passport on the dresser when we left. I emailed the host and they wanted a $25 finders fee before searching. It would have been in plain sight and the cleaning crew would have found it during the check out cleaning. (this was included in our correspondence with host) They wanted us to agree to the fee before even attempting to ask the cleaning company if the found it. We will return to Marathon yearly but we will be doing our due diligence before booking!

Great place
House is walking distance to grocery store and other restaurants. Pool and dock were perfect. Would stay there again.

Perfect vacation!
We had a great visit! The house was wonderful! We had a party of 9 and never felt cramped. The bedrooms were spacious and we loved that there were king sized beds in the 3 rooms and twin beds in the 4th room. The house was very clean and had everything we needed in the kitchen. We did have an issue with one of the bedroom television remotes, but the manager and cable company were prompt and fixed the problem. The pool was fabulous after a day of fishing or just hanging out during the day. The grill was great to cook out. The property management came and replaced the tank of gas while we were there. The house is super convenient to Publix, we even walked there for a few items! The beach is about 2 miles down the road but was not too bad to hop in the car and drive for the day. There are rinse off stations and a park for the kids at the beach. The water is beautiful! We ate some great food as well. A great place to relax and really enjoy a vacation. The house does have a bait freezer on the pool deck. That was a huge help! Two suggestions would be to have a light put on the fish cleaning table and of course an outdoor ice machine. Those would only make the stay even more perfect for the fishermen! We enjoyed the manatees that came for a visit every afternoon! The house and our vacation was perfect!

Worst property management company. 0 Stars
Upon arrival in Marathon, Sombrero Beach we arrived at 3:10PM when check in was at 4PM. We called the number for Megan whose number was on a sign on the front lawn. After a 30 minute phone call we were told we couldn’t even park on the property until after 4PM due to Covid-19 protocols and the cleaning staff... keep in mind there is no mask mandate or anything in the area and the property was vacant with no cleaning crew in sight. So after driving over 6 hours with a boat on a hitch we had to go sit in the Publix parking lot to not be on the property grounds, talk about unaccommodating. We entered the property at 4:01PM and first thing in the morning already noticed many things that weren’t to the guaranteed standards under the amenities. The light in the car port never worked which led to us having a pitch black downstairs area with no security.. when did they finally come to fix it?? On the second to last night of our stay even though was promised on multiple occasions someone was coming and no one showing up. But don’t forget all the nails we found on the floors by our car tires. The other major issue was the TV provider was horrible. After complaining, only 1 of the 2 TV’s was fixed which led to two of our guests having no TV service their whole week long stay. Also the A/C and water pressure never reached the front master bedroom. From now on, I will check to see if Vacasa is the property management company before I book any vacation. Lack of response, lack of communication and honestly lack of professionalism. Check the company or book direct. Do not recommend this unit.

2021 Marathon trip
House was great for 3 couples- pool was awesome. Zero mechanical issues, great neighbors, super close to supermarket etc. Boat dock is perfect and protected. Will stay again/great trip!

We just returned from a fantastic 10 nights at Canalside Cabana. We were a group of 8 (three 40-something couples and two 20-year-olds). We had a fabulous trip and really enjoyed the house. We spent a lot of time just relaxing by the pool and enjoying the local area. We would absolutely return to this house in the future. Any negatives about this house were very minor, I share them only because what is minor to us may be a vacation-killer to others.Local Area:Marathon was a great destination for us. We weren’t looking for nightclubs or beach parties, we were just looking for some time away from the craziness of home to enjoy some sunshine and relax. Sombrero Beach down the road was great. If you go all the way to the end, the water is less grassy. The house is very close walking distance to some stores, including groceries and liquor. Sombrero Beach Road is a little busy, so watch little ones, but not so busy that traffic was a big problem. Neighbors were mostly vacationers like us there to enjoy a quiet relaxing time. Previous review complained about neighbors in the blue house calling the police, but that didn’t happen with us even though they weren’t exactly friendly. We did respect quiet times.Interior of House:The number of bedrooms and bathrooms was great for a party of 8. Not sure that it would be very comfortable for more than 8 unless there were very small children involved. The house was very clean (spotless even) and did not show signs of age or lack of maintenance. Washer and dryer worked great, as did the dishwasher. No bugs! We have rented houses in warmer climates that had ants or other bugs and this house had none. Not a one.The beds are firm. If this will ruin your vacation sleep, either consider buying a mattress topper or look elsewhere. There also weren’t enough pillows so we went to Kmart and bought some cheap ones. Money well spent. The living room comfortably seated seven. We brought in one of the patio chairs for additional seating.Cooking:The kitchen had everything we needed for cooking breakfasts, reheating leftovers, and making drinks. We did not cook dinners due to the non-functioning BBQ (see below). The propane BBQ didn’t work. The burners need to be replaced. We didn’t bother to call and just ate our dinners out instead. (Oh darn, no cooking on vacation!)As with almost every rental house we’ve stayed in, the knives are very dull. If you plan to get your gourmet on, you may want to consider finding a way to bring a decent knife.Exterior of House/Other Amenities:The pool was a good size (though slightly smaller than it appears in pictures), well maintained, and nicely heated. The bicycles at the house are not in good repair. We luckily didn’t really need them, but if this is important to you consider other options. There is no ladder from the canal to the dock, so I’m not sure how one would kayak or paddle board the canals. You would not be able to get back up on to the dock. We were not so inclined, so not a big issue for us, but may be for others. The Management Company:We emailed Vacasa in advance of our trip to determine how many beach chairs were available for our beach days and we were told there were six chairs. When we arrived, there was one. We wound up buying chairs at Home Depot and giving them to our neighbors before leaving (somewhere around $36 per chair, ordered online and curbside pickup…money well spent). During our stay they did have to send out a repairman for the dishwasher - a panel had come off before we arrived that didn’t affect how it worked - and Vacasa was great about texting me to set up a good day and time. The repairman was nice and in an...

Air Conditioning took long to cool down every day
The house is beautiful and the beds very comfortable. The only problem was the AC was not cooling down fast enough. We had to leave it in ON during the day time so that the house will feel cool at night. It may need to be changed.

Greatest Place for Perfect Vacation!
This property has EVERYTHING needed for a dream vacation! The entire home was immaculate and furnished with high end coastal decor. Every bedroom had its own TV, along with a larger TV in the mail living space. So great to have full sized washer and dryer.
The private pool was a true oasis after a day on the boat. We were able to keep our paddle boards right there by our private dock, and the canals were truly great for paddling. We appreciated having a fish cleaning station at the end of the dock as well as a bait freezer out back. We were able to have all of our fishing, diving, and paddle board equipment stored without encroaching on our living area. An extra bonus was the ample parking for our vehicles and boat trailer. Truly lovely property and we definitely hope to return!

Great house
We were a group of 8. The house was very clean and well stocked!
It will take you about 15-20 min to get from house to ocean via boat as you have to navigate canal. Just an FYI.

Family vacation
We found this property to be everything we expected and more. The location is very convenient. Publix is about 0.3 mile. Sombrero beach is 1.54 miles. There is a paved walk/bike trail to both. We enjoyed having the pool heated, which we requested ahead. We found plenty of towels in the bathrooms. We found the kitchen well stocked with the necessities. This was a very nice property for our family of 7 adults.

Lovely house but dishonest owner
This is a lovely property in a great area. However, the owner is dishonest. Arrived to find no loungers by the pool..only a table and chairs. Contacted travel agency to raise the issue as all photographs of this property showed loungers. The owner told the travel agency that there were loungers and they we were lying! No visit from management company to address the issue after MANY telephone calls. I do not expect to rent a house, with a pool for a substantial amount of money and have to lay on concrete! Really spoiled our time here and to be called a liar was the icing on the cake!

Pleasant stay - However they need to update some information on the property.
Although we had a wonderful stay at the property, we were shocked to find it located differently than what was shown on the map on the listing. The map on the listing had it showing that we were staying at a place directly across from Sombrero Beach Park which is why we booked it. Additionally, if you are a boater there were a few issues I had with the dock. The hose they have at the property is connected to the house and gets to only about 20% of the dock, so if you plan to wash or rinse the boat you will need an additional hose. Also, there are no cleats to tie up your boat or dock lights. Lastly, when we reviewed the images of the property we saw the pool had an umbrella for shade. The umbrella would have made an amazing addition to the enjoying the pool under the hot Florida sun. However, the umbrella was broken and had been for some time as told by the maintenance man. Vacasa the property manager were great throughout the whole process and no complaint on their service - only praises. They did however say that they would not be replacing the umbrella during our stay or repairing as it was too expensive to replace. The inside of the house was beautiful. The beds were very comfortable and the kitchen had everything you would need. They do need to update the mapping and one of the images to truly reflect the location. Our property was located a mile away from where we thought we would have been staying.
