Grace Gifford was born in Dublin in March 1888.
In 1915 Grace began a courtship with Joseph Plunkett and they planned to marry. Unknown to Grace, Joseph was a founder of the Irish Volunteers who were planning a rebellion in Dublin seeking independence for Ireland.

The leaders were condemned to death by firing squad. When Joseph learned that his execution was scheduled to take place, he sought permission to be married. On the 3rd May 1916 at 6.00pm Grace Gifford entered Kilmainham Gaol. With a priest and two witnesses present she married Joseph. One can visit the chapel in Kilmainham Gaol where they were wed. This was a lovely place to stay. It was much bigger than I expected and had everything we needed. Comfortable beds and nice shower. Washer and dryer. If you are coming from Canada, bring an adapter for the electrical outlets. The hosts were very helpful with a mix-up that we had. A note the minifridge does not have a freezer section. The location is far from downtown, but there are lots of great sights (museums, parks) within walking distance. Grocery store and pharmacy are close. Bus stops are very close, and the red line train stop that goes to downtown is within walking distance. We tried walking home from downtown one night when taxis were not available and made it most of the way, feeling quite safe, until we found a taxi (this is not typical, it was just a busy Dublin night). We also left at 2:30am to bus to the airport and the walking and waiting was safe (we saw a fox on the sidewalk!), and the bus was prompt.

The apartment was fine except 2 adults are not comfortable on the sofa bed. That’s where my husband slept and we are not big people. Two smaller kids would be fine. In the bedroom there is a double bed and a single bed. Linens were clean. Kitchen was well equipped. The bus ride to the city center takes 15 to 19 minutes depending on the time of day. It’s a straight shot to the Temple Bar area. We also walked from City center to the National museums and gallery. So the bus is ok but can be quite busy during commute time. The Inchicore District is quaint and I wish we had spent more time there. We did go to the Brewery and pizza place, Rascals. Great beer and pizza, friendly atmosphere. Tessco (grocery store) is close by and it has a variety of premade food. A saving Grace after a long day of sightseeing. All in all we were comfortable in this apartment. Rory picked us up from the airport which was a Godsend. If you come in via the airport I would ask to have Rory pick you up…

We had a great time staying in Dublin. They location of the cottage was nice and it was close to a bus stop to take you into the city center or the train to travel throughout Ireland. You can stay out and there are several nice pubs and groceries to supply your needs. Property was very nice and had everything you needed. We had a few things come up and the owners were quick to get us what we requested. Great stay!

What a wonderful week! The hosts were gracious and great communicators. We arrived in Dublin Airport and were met in arrivals by Rory, what a pleasant individual that made us feel so welcome in Ireland. The Gifford cottage was exactly perfect for two people. It us located within a short walk to the Luas Redline. This took us straight to downtown everyday and to Hueston station for our train trip to the Cliffs of Mohr. I could go on and on, just a perfect stay in a perfect way.

A small apartment in Dublin that was perfect for my wife and I. We drove from Shannon and the directions given were precise and easy to follow. The apartment was just like the pictures and was well equipped. We met Valerie, who provided excellent sight-seeing information as well as suggestions for day trips. Bus and tram in Dublin was close by and easy to use. Would recommend this apartment for couples or small families. We will book this again on our next trip to Dublin.
