The Roaches: Roaches (or Roches) is a wind-carved outcrop of gritstone rocks straddling the parishes of Leekfrith and Heathylee in the Peak District National Park about 4 miles north of Leek, Staffordshire.
The name Roaches has evolved recently from 'Roches' as the area used to be known only 100 years (or less) ago. 'Roches' is the french word for rocks.
The Roaches are particularly popular with climbers because of the diversity of the climbing routes there. Also there are many miles of paths to satisfy the most seasoned rambler.
The Roaches area includes Hen Cloud, so named because with a little imagination it looks like a roosting hen and Ramshaw Rocks which includes the weird rock formation called the Winking Man.
For many years, from the 1930s to the early 2000s, Wallabies roamed the Roaches. Some say they are still out there. They had been released from a private zoo. 3 Yaks were also released at the same time but they died out in the 1950's.
Bakewell Market Town: Bakewell in Derbyshire and the Peak District , is a beautiful, small, market town situated on the River Wye which is crossed by a 13th century 5 arched bridge still open to traffic. The famous Bakewell pudding was invented accidentally at the Hotel, when a cook misinterpreted instructions and poured egg mixture over the jam instead of mixing it in the pastry and what should have been a tart was now a pudding. Bakewell puddings can be bought at several shops in the town centre.
There are lots of unique shops, cafes and restaurants to visit and Market day every Monday and farmers market on Saturdays once per month.
The Manifold Valley and Trail: Great for Cylcing/Walking/Climbing
The Manifold Trail is a multi-user route along the Manifold valley following the former Leek and Manifold Light Railway. This trail is an easy route and is suitable for children and the elderly. The Tissington trails has been open since the 1930s when the railway closed, and is probably the earliest case of a disused railway line being converted to a walkers and cyclists route.
Waterhouses official car park is just off the main Ashbourne to Leek road, the A523. Here you will find cycle hire and toilets.
En-route high up in the cliff you can see Thor's cave. Worth a climb up for views of the valley. Further on is Wetton Mill where toilets and refreshments are available. There is another cave to explore above the cafe.
The cottage has working smoke Alarms and CO Carbon Monoxide alarms too for your safety.

Inaccurate listing
The reason for the ratings on this property is due to the inaccurate listing on VRBO. The accommodation is described as being a 5382 sq ft farmhouse and was actually less than half this. Our booking was based on the information provided and we were therefore sadly disappointed. I hope this error in the listing is rectified by the hosts who were friendly and responsive and might be unaware of the issue. We did not bring it to their attention as clearly there was nothing they would have been able to do and we had no alternative accommodation. Living in the US we stay at VRBO-listed properties twice a year but also use the site when we travel to see relatives in the UK. If the size of the property is not a major requirement then this cottage would be a good choice for a vacation in a beautiful location.

We had a lovely 5 day break with fabulous walks nearby and great pubs.
The house was very comfortable, clean and met all our needs. It was peaceful and quiet with good sitting out areas in the garden. The owners were really helpful and knowledgeable on walks in the area, good pubs to visit and day out trips to houses and gardens.

Brilliant property. Lots of space for 6 adults.
Only problem was the spongy mattress in downstairs bedroom and the bed was on casters and moved in the night!

We had a lovely stay at Ford Wetley Cottage. The cottage was very clean and well equipped. Louise and Adrian were great hosts. Thanks again to them for all their hospitality including the kind welcome pack. It's a great location for exploring the Peak District. We had good weather and did walks along Rudyard Lake and Dovedale, amongst others. During our stay my 88 year old mum came for a one night visit. The downstairs bedroom with ensuite was perfect for her. She made good use of the garden and driveway for her walks/exercise. Our 3 year old daughter loved playing with toys and puzzles from the big basket in the living room. Would highly recommend this cottage. We hope to back soon. Mark, Pilar, Shirely and Bella

Rented the cottage with my fiancé and our dog. The cottage was amazing. So good for anyone wanting a break in the countryside. The log fire and welcome basket were great. Louise was really helpful and on hand to answer any questions. Would recommend hiring the hot tub, such an easy process and just added to the stay further. Cottage was spotless, can’t wait to come back and stay again!

Wonderful break
Lovely cottage in a picturesque setting was extremely well equipped and very comfortable. The hosts Louise and Adrian are very friendly and helpful but not intrusive. There is so much to do in the area with good walks and lovely villages to visit that the holiday was both exhausting and relaxing. A change of scene was much needed and will need to visit again as we didn’t get to see half of what the area has to offer. Beautiful starry night skies.

Fantastically clean cottage
This cottage was better than the description. Really clean and sanitised by the owner with an anti viral long term spray that made us feel reassured during our stay. There was a big supply of sanitisers and cleaners in the kitchen and a bottle of hand sanitiser for our use.
The facilities were lovely, pretty bedrooms, each with their own bathroom which made social distancing very easy. There were Molton Brown toiletries in the bathrooms for an added touch of luxury. The lounge was spacious with plenty of seating and large coffee table and there was a big table in the kitchen which would seat 7, but with extra folding chairs if required. We catered for ourselves all week and the kitchen utensils etc were sufficient for a big Sunday roast with crumble for pudding and a birthday celebration mid-week. A mixing bowl would have been useful, but I am sure that if we had asked the owner, she would have provided it immediately!
Really friendly owners who live on site, but were not at all intrusive. We were able to hire a hot tub, which added to the enjoyment. The barbecue was provided, with more than enough charcoal. The log burner had logs for a couple of evenings, but more logs were available. Even the matches and newspapers were provided.
We took our Newfoundland dog who was also made very welcome and was able to run freely in the enclosed garden. There are a lot of sheep in the fields nearby which meant keeping her on a lead, but we were able to find plenty of sheep free walks as well. Very quiet country lanes to walk around with very few cars.
A wonderfully peaceful week full of walks, reading, board games and good food. Just what we wanted.

Absolutely stunning
Had the most amazing few days here, cottage is absolutely bliss. Like a dream when u are there out in the country in this little palace with all of the home comforts needed. Took my family with me, a group of 7 mixes from ages 1-15. It’s only a short drive from Alton towers and there are lots of beautiful walks to be tried, however weather wasn’t on our side. Louise and Adrian were absolutely fantastic hosts. Could not do enough for us, would Defo recommend for a family break and will definitely be returning! Thank you so much!

Beautiful and peaceful cottage
We had a great weekend at the cottage. It was a perfect place to meet up with family and for walking. We were lucky to have snow and went on some lovely walks straight from the door. The cottage is full of character and is beautifully furnished with a welcoming feel. Louise and Adrian were very friendly and helpful but also respected our privacy. We have already recommended the cottage to friends and would definitely return in the future.

A beautiful and remote winter-wonderland getaway
We were blessed with snow on the day we arrived, which set the scene for an idyllic four day stay over New Year. The cottage was home from home, with all amenities on hand, and tastefully dressed like something out of Good Homes magazine. It was beautifully presented with a seasonal, festive feel: a traditional Christmas tree with crooning music and a burning log fire on our arrival. We spent our holiday roaming the North Staffordshire countryside and it was always a pleasure to return to the cottage. Louise and Adrian were excellent hosts, and the dogs and ponies were an extra bonus for the children. Thank you for a lovely holiday!

Quiet and comfortable, ideal for extended families and anyone wanting quiet countryside.
Six adults and one infant, a surprise birthday celebration and Ford Wesley Cottage was ideal. We had plenty of room, a log burner to keep us warm and some beautiful and exceptionally quiet countryside to explore. Louise and Adrian are excellent and helpful hosts and we all enjoyed our stay.

Great stay, lovely cottage, friendly owners. Very well stocked kitchen.
Lots to do in the locality (driving distance for most), cafes, bars, restaurants, with extensive info in the cottage (menus, phone numbers etc.). We had no mobile signal in the cottage but the wifi was ideal.
