Welcome to The Seldom Thing (named for an Irish saying, “The Seldom Thing is Wonderful”- which reminds us to value what is rare in life)!
Our recently renovated spacious single-family home with 5 bedrooms/4 full baths provides stunning unobstructed ocean views with many updates throughout to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable. Updates include a remodeled kitchen with newer appliances, smart TVs, living room sofas and dining set, and bed frames/mattresses. Linens and bath towels are also included in your stay.
Look for dolphins, birds, shrimp boats, surfers, and beautiful sunrises from the home's three unobstructed ocean view decks, enjoy gorgeous sunsets on the two Sound-side decks, or relax and BBQ on the huge ground level deck. Located on the island with a quiet, peaceful stretch of the beach with deeded access less than 100 ft away, the home also offers a semi-private pier located a short walk to the Sound directly behind the house and is perfect for launching paddle boards, small watercrafts, or kayaks. Complimentary two single kayaks with carry carts, beach chairs and toys, and gear.
The home also provides a convenient elevator at all levels perfect for multi-generational families, or those looking for an easier way to bring in luggage and groceries.
We are located approximately 2.5 miles to either Surf City and Topsail Beach restaurants and activities.

Adjacent is the recently renovated kitchen with full-size stove and fridge, microwave and toaster oven, blender, coffeemaker, dishwasher, generous cabinets and counter area. The level also features a full covered deck with captain's chairs/tables for unobstructed ocean views.

The home sleeps up to 14 guests in five bedrooms.
Each bedroom has a full deck with three of the largest bedrooms having generous views of the ocean or the Sound. The home features high-speed internet and each bedroom has a smart TV preloaded with access to Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, and other popular channels.
OUTDOOR AREA
Outside the home, enjoy a spacious 36-foot ground level deck featuring an enclosed hot/cold shower, with comfortable deck furniture and lighting that offers a great place to enjoy an evening meal, sunset, or another quiet outdoor space for reading and relaxing. There is also a gas grill and a picnic table and captain's chairs out on the deck.
The home offers a driveway and carport accommodating 4-5 cars.

The cottage was perfect for a family gathering! Spacious, well-equipped. We enjoyed the porches as well as the grill area. The views were beautiful of the ocean, and the sound view from top bedroom was spectacular 😊

Owner was great to work with, communication was easy, and he was very responsive. House had everything we needed for a fantastic stay, including lots of chairs, umbrellas, boogie boards, beach toys. As others have said, it is right across the street from a beautiful beach, and the kitchen is well stocked with everything you need for a terrific week. Thank you, Kevin! We hope to be back.

The house was amazing with great views and easy beach access. The elevator made loading and unloading a breeze! Rooms were spacious, house was well stocked with everything you need. The road is a bit busy at times but it did not impact our vacation. The host is very responsive and awesome to work with. Would recommend this house without a doubt and we will be returning next year!

We had a wonderful week! House was beautiful and conveniently located across from the private beach with awesome views. Owner checked on us a few times and very easy to work with. Sad it’s over!! Definitely recommend it!

We had a wonderful stay at the home with our family. The views of the beach and the sound are as advertised. We had an opportunity to take the kayaks out one morning, and the launch was VERY close by. The owner was responsive and helped us with any questions we had. This is definitely bookmarked for 2025!

Completely clean, gorgeous, and comfy home. Location was amazing with views of ocean from three levels of balconies. Watched the sun rise most mornings. Just as great is the proximity (short walk) to the sound. Sweet little dock. Watched sunsets most nights from rear balconies. A short drive (3 miles or so) into town for great food without even crossing the bridge. For us the best part of this house was all of the amenities. The owner went above and beyond to make this stay personalized, comfortable, and simple. Communication incredibly easy. Beach days were made simple with chairs, umbrellas, and toys provided. We had a blast exploring the sound with the kayaks and gear provided. We used the outdoor shower daily and my large family enjoyed meals all together both inside and out. Cannot say enough good things about The Seldom Thing and hope to return soon.

We were on the island for my daughter's wedding, Kevin's place was the perfect place to stay - plenty of room, great beds, clean and comfortable and most of all the location cannot be beat! Although you're across the street from the beach, there are no houses in your view so watching the ocean with your morning coffee couldn't be better.

Nice house, amenities very good (great beach chairs and umbrellas) plenty of deck space. Only negative is that area main road very narrow and busy at times. Also vegetation on north side of house needs to be cut back some at the road, difficult to pull out as you can’t see oncoming traffic.

My family had a wonderful week in Surf City staying at the Seldom Thing! This included 3 couples, 2 babies and a dog! We saw beautiful sunsets from the back deck and beautiful sunrises from the front deck! The house is very well stocked, the kitchen had everything we needed, the beds were comfortable and even the towels were soft! And we got lucky with perfect weather so we could enjoy the beach and the ocean everyday!

Been coming to Topsail for over 30 years with the family. We tried this house for the first time this year after the other one was sold. Everyone liked the house and the location. Beach was not crowded at all. Easy walk to the beach access point. Only thing I will do next time is bring my own pans and knives. Highly recommend!!

From the very beginning, we were very pleased with this property and especially with the host. He was very informative and answered any question we had. He even sent us reminders during the week about the trash pick-up. While on vacation, families can forget this detail. I even sent the host about a particular frying pan in the kitchen and he answered where he had purchased it right away.
The beds were very comfortable and the kitchen was fully stocked. The house was extremely clean and the decks on the front of the house gave us an awesome view of the ocean. We highly recommend this rental property to any interested family.

The Seldom Thing, and the owner, were both very welcoming.
The owner thought of every little thoughtful touch they could to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable.
This included a dozen fresh locally made donuts.
My family stayed at The Seldom Thing to attend a funeral in the area. This property was a perfect choice. We were able to enjoy the sights and sounds of being oceanfront on Topsail, NC, and the house was large enough for our family to stay in one place.
The rooms are larger than they appeared in the VRBO photos.
We loved the new living room furniture, so much so that I am researching to see where I can buy the exact same set for my house.
The flooring (NO carpet-yeah) is great! Just what the Doctor ordered for our allergies.
The kitchen was well-stocked with everything we needed.
The owner kept an open line of communication with us and was promptly responded to every question we had.
It was tough to drive away but we look forward to going back again soon.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here! We visit Topsail Island regularly, and this rental is by far the most accommodating of all the ones we’ve stayed in. It was clean, spacious, and the views of the ocean and sound are unmatched, you get the best of both worlds. The owner made sure to check in and have an open line of communication, which I appreciate so much! Our family will definitely stay here again!

This house was a great spot for a family vacation. We had 6 adults, 5 kids. Right across the street from the beach, decks on every floor, lots of beach toys/chairs. Even 2 kayaks, although we didn't try them. We highly recommend this house.

My family and I, party of 8, very much enjoyed our stay at The Seldom Thing. Very spacious, great views, the beds were very comfortable, and we had quick and easy access to the beach!
Kevin, the owner, was very responsive and helpful when we had questions. He had a dozen delicious donuts ready for us at the local donut shop the day after our arrival.
He was also very accommodating when we had a mixup of our departure day and allowed us to stay another day! I would highly recommend this house for a relaxing getaway!

Our family has a tradition of spending Thanksgiving at the beach. The Seldom Thing was a perfect choice! The kitchen was well appointed and we had everything needed to prepare and serve Thanksgiving dinner. Views were terrific and beach access easy. With 4 floors, the elevator was a wonderful touch. My family which included 12 people ranging in age from 78 years old to 6 months had a fantastic stay at "The Seldom Thing". Kevin gave very clear instructions on checking in, using the elevator, house rules and amenities, local sites and was always quick to answer questions.
The rooms are all bigger than they appeared in the actual photos listed on the VRBO website. Also there is new living room furniture and the flooring was all carpet free which is heavenly to a person likes me who dislikes carpet and all the dust mites and allergens you just can't get out of carpet, regardless of how many times it is vacuumed.
Everything worked as expected in the house. The elevator was very nice and really allowed my elderly disabled mother to enjoy the vacation. It was reliable and we didn't have a single problem with it. The kitchen had everything we could ever need for our stay. The house even had a starter supply of paper towels, toilet paper, laundry detergent, dishwasher detergent, trash bags, hand soap and dish soap which was nice so we didn't have to shop until the day after our arrival for those very necessary items.
There wasn't anything that wasn't great about this house and the location. I hope to stay there again.

My extended family and 8-month old thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Seldom Thing. Kevin was such a considerate and responsive host, answering any question we had and making sure that we had everything that we needed for our stay. The kitchen was the best-stocked kitchen we have ever had in a rental and was perfect for our evening meals. There were also plenty of chairs for us to take to the beach which was so nice! We will definitely be back and recommending The Seldom Thing to our other family members.

Great location with easy access to the beach and intercoastal water. Neighbors all very friendly. I could not think of an amenity that this kitchen and house did not have. Plenty of personal space with bedrooms and bathrooms and balconies. Enough beach and outdoor equipment for all to enjoy. The communication with the owner, Kevin, was great. Checking in and out was easy. Would highly recommend this property!

This is an amazing home , so close to the beach , with amazing views of the ocean. We enjoyed lounging on the porches just relaxing. Was fun to walk the dogs to the bay side. Plenty of places to eat and shop. But we also just had an enjoyable time hanging at the house, playing board games with our adult children and their significant others. Will definitely go back. Kevin was very easy to work with and we thank him for everything!

Great Home for Large Family
This home is spacious and great for large families! The kitchen is well stocked. Kevin was very responsive to messages and took care of a low battery smoke alarm in record time! The beach is an easy walk from the house and our grandkids loved the boogey boards. We had a fantastic week 😊

Surf City Beach House
It is a large house that accommodated all eight of us very comfortably. There are plenty of bathrooms and lots of chairs for the dining table and an extra high table next to the window that the two grandchildren enjoyed. It is a beachfront property, so it was easy to access the beach. One oddity was that the master bedroom on the 4th floor has no closets, no place to store clothes, and no hooks on which to hang clothes. We enjoyed our stay thoroughly.
