About this house rental
As soon as you step through the 100 plus year old oak double doors, you know this is not just another rental. On the outside, it has changed very little since Pruitt's Grocery was built as a family-owned neighborhood corner store in 1920. It was the last one operating in the NW Quadrant just before Mr. Pruitt died in 2015. Inside, it has been beautifully renovated, and is now our home. We have taken great care and love to furnish it with midcentury modern decor and luxury accommodations. We researched Consumer Reports, U.S. News & World Reports, and other "Best Reviewed" sites for every major purchase and have provided everything we have needed, and most everything we have wanted, to make it beautiful and comfortable. We took care to highlight the history and surroundings of Beaufort, and to include crafts from local artisans and merchandise from local shops.
LOCATION & THINGS TO DO:
Our home is in the Historic District a few blocks from the beautiful Beaufort Waterfront with lovely sunrises and sunsets, alfresco dining, and unique stores. MCRD Parris Island is 9 miles/15 minutes from our home. We are 45 minutes from Hilton Head, 1 hour from Savannah, and less than 1.5 hours from Charleston.
Hunting Island Beach, South Carolina’s single most popular state park, is about 20 minutes away. A pristine white, sandy beach, marsh and maritime forest, a saltwater lagoon and ocean inlet hosting a vast array of land and marine wildlife are all part of the park’s natural allure. The historic Hunting Island Lighthouse was built in 1859 and rebuilt in 1875 after it was destroyed during the Civil War. A unique feature of the lighthouse is that it was constructed of interchangeable cast-iron sections so it could be dismantled should it ever need to be moved. We provide a complimentary pass to Hunting Island State Park, along with beach chairs, towels, and a beach cart, should you want to take advantage. The pass includes free admission to the lighthouse.
At 5 miles, the Sands at Port Royal is the closest beach with lovely views of the Beaufort River and the estuaries. In the evening, you likely will catch a stunning sunset with the shrimp boats coming in while dining at Fishcamp or Shellring Ale Works.
AMENITIES FOR PETS & CHILDREN
We are pet friendly with a fenced in yard, and also provide some dog amenities so you won't have to pack so much - beds, food and water bowls, one large crate, and blankets, a Coolaroo Steel-Framed Elevated Dog Bed and a few toys, and furniture covers in case your dog wants to join you on the couch.
We provide a high chair and dishes, cups and utensils for toddlers and small children. We also have an indoor tent and indoor and outdoor games for children of all ages, including an adjustable putter should your child want to join you on the green. (Let me know if you would like to have our manager leave out the high chair and pack 'n play.)

This is an amazing house that has a fantastic fenced in backyard for your furry family members. It is decorated beautifully and every possible kitchen accessory you could think of is provided. We loved that it was walking distance to town. The host was great with communication and super friendly. If we are ever back in the area we would absolutely love to stay here again.

We loved the Pruitt Grocery House! The cottage is even better than the pictures show. There is a very nice landscaped garden area with a fire pit on the side. The owners are very friendly and easy to communicate with!

This place was not only beautiful but had everything we needed and more for our vacation. The kitchen was so well appointed that we enjoyed several meals there rather than going out! The fenced in yard was wonderful for the dog on our trip as well. The location was walkable to the waterfront and all the wonderful shops. We were looking for a low key vacation to spend time with friends and this was exactly it!

My husband & I came to Beaufort to do some exploring and get some much needed rest and relaxation. We considered several places to stay, but when we saw Pruitt's Grocery, we knew this was going to be our home base for our week-long trip. It was a perfect oasis.
The property description is spot on. The beautiful historic home was luxuriously appointed and had everything we needed and so much more! The welcome binder was extremely helpful, thorough and interesting and our host, Kathy, was attentive, responsive, and gave us numerous excellent recommendations for restaurants, music venues, sightseeing, shops, and nearby places to visit. We even received a gift card to Lowcountry Cider where we had breakfast one morning - best blueberry scone and biscuit we have ever had! We also enjoyed sitting at the bar at Plums and our favorite restaurant was Old Bull Tavern.
Most days we made the short walk into town enjoying seeing all the beautiful homes and visiting the historical cemetery. We also took day trips to some other islands and Kathy again provided great recommendations, especially Hunting Island and lunch at Fish Camp.
We spent every evening having pre-dinner cocktails on the front porch listening to music on the karaoke machine we named "Steve'. And we really enjoyed cooking dinner a few nights in the gourmet kitchen, outdoor grill and fire pit. Also, don't miss watching sunsets on the waterfront! Pruitt's Grocery surpassed all our expectations and we hope to return soon!

This is a beautifully maintained place, a new renovation that couldn't be more comfortable and well appointed, and in a wonderful in-town neighborhood. We could walk to everything. The owners respond immediately to any questions or concerns. Highly, highly recommend! PS Forgot to mention our dog just LOVED the fenced in yard!

We loved everything about this house. The communications with the owners was easy and quick and when we arrived we were so impressed with the cleanliness and aesthetic. Such a cute spot! We loved the large and fenced in back yard, great for our two dogs. It was walkable to Bay Street and all of the downtown fun - an easy five-ish blocks. We loved sitting on the front porch also and watching the locals pass by. The house also has an incredible history and in fact a local stopped us to share that he had visited the Pruitt's grocery store as a child and into adulthood and has such fond memories. The house easily accommodated our family of four. The kitchen was well stocked with every possibly cooking device and utensil we could need. The furnishings and beds were very comfortable and overall it is a quant, clean and charming property - one of the best VRBOs we have ever stayed in and we have traveled a lot! I highly recommend.

This VRBO quickly became our favorite short term rental of all time! My husband and I had the privilege of staying for a week.
We arrived at Kathy's place very late on a Friday night after a long day of travel. My immediate thought upon arrival was to get into bed ASAP and rest. However, once we turned on all the lights and toured the home we couldn't stop checking all the fun rooms out! We love games and there was an entire room!
As everyone else mentioned, this home is equipped better than most people's homes! Not only does it have everything you could need or want to cook...Kathy has provided the quality of items (knives, cookware, utensils) most regular chefs only dream of using!
If you are a coffee drinker, you will LOVE the brewing options and all the restful areas to enjoy your java while reading!
The beds were comfortable, the entire home was pristine, the decor was delightful! Most of all the host is extremely accessible and thoughtful. Everything is labeled and organized and Kathy even put together an invaluable binder of local restaurant, shopping, and suggestions of things to do!
We took day trips to Savannah, Tybee Island, Charleston, Hunting Island (Kathy even provides a park pass!), tours of Penn Center on St. Helena Island and much more creating incredibly memories!! ENJOY!

The owners have done an amazing job of creating a comfortable environment for guests. The kitchen had everything one could possibly need for meal prep and dining. Bed and bathrooms were comfortable and well appointed. Outside seating areas were perfect for having a glass of wine with friends. This Beaufort home was the best we've ever stayed in during our many visits to the historic town. The owners have really thought of everything to make the home both beautiful and comfortable for the whole family including our canine companion. The kitchen is well stocked with gourmet cookware and though it is a cottage, it felt plenty large for the 4 of us. The yard is lovely and peaceful. And we love that there are so many personal touches from the local area throughout the house. Our hostess, Kathy was so helpful with recommendations on restaurants and things to see and do that we found some new gems on this trip. This is true southern hospitality at its finest. We will definitley be back for another stay!

It was a perfect storm. We had planned on a special weekend for our 15th and Mothers Day. The house exceeded all of our expectation and more. Great location, weather, great property and just what the doctor ordered. Kathy was great in making sure we were comfortable and up-to-date on the latest goings on. An absolutely fantastic host. We were lucky enough to spend a week at this extraordinary property, which was a perfect perch for our first trip Beaufort. The house was gorgeous, stylish and comfy at the same time (not an easy feat to pull off), restored with deep respect for the building's fascinating history while being loaded with every modern comfort and convenience. The love and care shown and the attention to detail is extraordinary, and we have NEVER EVER had a more well equipped kitchen at a home rental! Or teenage son the chef (who can be a bit of a food snob) was over the moon with the vast array of cool touches, like multiple fancy coffee machines, an old school pop corn maker, egg cooker, m&m dispenser, beautiful serving dishes, and every sort of pot, pan, utensil one could ever imagine wanting. We loved being within walking distance to everything and appreciated living in a real local neighborhood rather than staying in a more touristy area. Kathy is a wonderful, warm, and attentive hostess, responding to every question and request for help immediately and with grace and good humor. And she had the best insider recommendation for everything from restaurants to seafood stores to cafes to golf cart rentals, you name it! On a dog-related note - pet friendly rentals often can be kind of blah or run down - this one was the exact opposite and we appreciated the welcoming touches like the cute elevated dog bed and food and water bowls! We truly did not want to leave after our week there, and would go back in a heartbeat as we feel like we only scratched the surface of Beaufort and this charming home! Big thumbs (and paws!) up to everything about Pruitt's Grocery!

Kathy has gone above and beyond in her hospitality at this lovely home. From the amazing artwork, interior design, fully stocked and then some kitchen, luxury baths and bedding, gorgeous yard and cozy charming front porch. You really feel the care and warmth that was put into their home. We used the park pass to Hunting Island 4 times, read through the tour books and watched The Big Chill, all provided thoughtfully. If you are looking to stay in a home in Beaufort you will not find better than this!

The house was even more lovely in person. The yard was roomy and inviting - great bench swings on which to welcome the day. The dogs loved exploring every corner of the yard and taking advantage of the dog bed and raised water bowl provided. The kitchen had everything one could possibly need. Conveniently located near all the area has to offer. The hosts were friendly and took extra care to check on us as Hurricane Ian approached. We didn’t need the whole house generator but it was nice to know it was there. Highly recommend this lovely home for your next trip.

We are building a home in Port Royal so have stayed in many properties throughout the area over the past year. This by far is the most well appointed property. We cooked a couple of nights and had every utensil, pot and pan available to us. Our 14 month old granddaughter was with us part of the time and was enchanted with the kids tent, the high chair and toddler utensils were a nice touch too! Kathy has gone to extreme measures to be sure guests have info about the area, history, points of interest, access to Hunting Island and tips for shopping and restaurants. We can’t say enough wonderful things about staying at Pruitt House. Completely remodeled but some of the original pieces that were part of the General Store have been left intact . The home is decorated lovely with many unique touches such as local art. We appreciated every room and the history behind them. Our hosts could not have been anymore accommodating for our stay. We brought our infant granddaughter, Kathy went above and beyond to make sure Olivia had everything she could possibly need (port-a-crib, high chair……..). We loved the privacy of the back yard, the hanging swings, outdoor dining area & seating area. The parking pass for Hunting Island was also appreciated, we put that to good use! We highly recommend staying at the Pruitt House, it’s so close to downtown with many wonderful restaurants & shops. We can’t wait for our next trip to Beaufort! Thank you Kathy for making our family vacation perfect!

Kathy's property was the perfect place for a weekend girls getaway. It was clean, exactly as listed, and beautifully decorated! We were able to use the Hunting Island pass to visit the beach with no problem. Kathy was also so helpful in giving us recommendations for local restaurants and bars all weekend. Sometimes we must pat our own backs for making good choices. This property was the best accommodation I’ve ever chosen or stayed in. So thoughtfully appointed with every modern convenience considered for the traveler. The host was an excellent communicator who made great recommendations for us visiting a new city. Centrally located close to town - everything was within walking distance if you did not want to use your car. I can’t say enough great things about Pruitt Grocery House but I’ll say the most important thing - thank you for peaceful, relaxing and worry free week!
