Casa Abuelo Loco (“Crazy Grandfather’s House”) is the ultimate Big Bend vacation rental for families and groups of up to six guests. Named after the crazy grandfather that built it in 2024 to share with his wife, kids, and grandkids.

Designed by hosts that have managed vacation rentals in Terlingua since 2008, this house has virtually everything guests have requested in a Big Bend vacation home.

With 2035 square feet of interior space, a 660 square foot elevated deck, and 1000 square feet of patio space, you and your group will have ample space to relax and hang out.

Game Room: The game room features a pool table, darts, games, and puzzles. The pool table also converts to a table for games, puzzles, or extra dining space. It is open to the kitchen and living room for easy social interaction with your family or friends.

Full Kitchen: The spacious kitchen is fully stocked with modern appliances and kitchenwares. Large fridge and freezer, glass top stove, electric oven with air fry and convection options, dishwasher, microwave, coffee maker, toaster, slow cooker, blender, pots and pans, bakeware, and much more. There is also counter height bar seating for six.

Dining Room: The dining room is open to the living room and kitchen for easy socialization. Seating for eight at the table.

Living Room: The large living room has a sofa sectional and smart TV, a reading area with two comfortable chairs, and an office workspace with a large desk and two office chairs. All looking out onto the elevated deck and the Chisos Mountains.

Bedrooms: The master suite features a king size bed, Chisos Mountain views, a private bathroom with a large shower, and a closet that opens to the bathroom. The second bedroom features a king bed. The third bedroom has two extra long twin beds (the same length as king size beds). All three rooms have their own smart TV, dressers, nightstands, ceiling fans, and table lamps. All bed linens are provided.

Bathrooms: Both bathrooms have custom tiled showers, vanities, mirrors, flushing toilets, hot and cold water, ample bath linens, soap, shampoo, and conditioner.

Laundry Room: The laundry room has a large washer and dryer and a large wash basin.

Deck: The 660 sf deck is mostly covered but also has open-sky sections for star gazing. There is a dining table and chairs, plus Adirondack chairs. It opens to the living room with no steps and is elevated about eight feet above the desert floor. Breathtaking views of the Chisos Mountains.

Patio Space: The 1000 sf patio features a 15’x7’ swim spa with jetted hot tub seating and current for swimming. There is also outdoor seating, a propane grill, a smokeless, wood-burning fire pit, and outdoor games.

Dark Sky Friendly: The deck and patio have red-tinted outdoor lighting to preserve our dark skies and maximize your star gazing. The parking area and main entry are sheltered from view and are well lit by motion activated flood lights that shut off automatically. There are also downward facing lights that can be turned on as needed. We ask that guests close the blinds at night to prevent indoor light from shining out the large windows.

Abuelo Loco himself: A fun statue of the home’s namesake, Abuelo Loco, stands ready to welcome all guests as they arrive at the property. He’s always smiling and ready for photos.

Central AC and Heat: The home has central AC, heat, and ceiling fans.

Energy friendly and sound insulated design. Built with foam and steel structural insulated panels, the exterior walls are insulated with 5.5” of foam for energy efficiency. The interior walls are insulated with 3.5” or 5.5” of foam for sound damping privacy between the rooms.

Guest Access:
Private and secure access is provided with a key code that opens the entry door and patio door. No need to schedule your arrival time or meet with the hosts to obtain a key.

The Neighborhood:
Located on Townsend Bluff (the name of the bluff and the private road) on the eastern edge of the historic 248 Mining District (cinnabar mining). Historic mining ruins are nearby, but all private and some occupied. The private road that accesses Abuelo Loco is shared by local residents that value their privacy and respect yours. You are welcome to walk a quarter mile up the road to the top of Townsend Bluff, overlooking Terlingua Creek. Do not approach the edge of the bluff the ground is unstable. The road takes you past two private homes. However, please do not continue down the road to the old mining settlement. Restored mining ruins there are privately owned, and the area is NOT open to the public. Just down the hill, on FM 170, is the business operations center for Big Bend Vacation Rentals, the company that manages the property.

Other Things to Note:
Please respect our local "dark sky" initiatives to reduce light pollution and preserve our world class star gazing. Please conserve water, but not to the point of inconvenience or discomfort. If you have questions, concerns, or problems during your stay, please contact us. We will be eager to assist you.

Interaction with Guests:
The hosts, Daryl & Janet Eby of Big Bend Vacation Rentals, and their staff, all live in the area. We manage dozens of private vacation homes. We usually do not meet our guests in person. However, we are always available if needed. The best way to reach us while here is to text or call Daryl's cell. His number is provided to all guests.
