We kwamen hier aan met zeer veel verwachtingen (na het lezen van de reviews), maar waren een beetje teleurgesteld.
Positief: mooi zicht, tussen jungle en strand, prachtige omgeving. Hostel is mooi van uitzicht. Hangmatten. Omgeving. Gezellige sfeer, uiteraard afhankelijk van de gasten.
Personeel is ongeïnteresseerd (of komt in elk geval zo over) en geeft geen of beperkte info over tours (ook na dit te vragen, zeer beperkte onduidelijke info), het lijkt alsof het teveel moeite is gevraagd hierop te antwoorden. Keuken vol etensresten, ijskast is walgelijk (vis en vol open borden met eten), gasten hebben dit zelf uiteindelijk opgeruimd. Ze rekenen 10% extra als je met kaart betaalt (zou al minder een probleem zijn als al bovenstaande wel in orde was). Het is echt de combinatie van dit alles dat het verblijf een beetje tegen deed vallen. Veel potentieel, maar lijkt alsof personeel alles wat laat hangen. Er is weinig tot niets in de buurt voor te eten of drinken, daarom erg jammer dat de keuken zo ranzig is, nodigt niet uit om te koken. Basic is zeker oké, maar toch belangrijk dat het gewoon proper is.

I really had a wonderful time at the pelican house hostel. The staff (owners and volunteers) are amazing! They help you with everything, organize tours and transport and are always up for a lovely conversation. The atmosphere at the hostel is super laid-back and familiar. The hostel has a kitchen and fridge for cooking meals and enough spaces to hang out. Despite the humidity, the sheets and pillows are dry and smell fresh. There is daily housekeeping to keep everything clean. The location is absolutely amazing (just look at the pictures). It really is a small paradise and I think my Chocó experience may have been the best during my 8 months of traveling.
The only small remarks I have would be that my mattress was a bit old and worn through, so little uncomfortable. It might be time to change them. There are only a few toilets for quite a lot of people, although overall they were clean enough and this of course depends on the guests. The fridge was a bit dirty, but that is also mostly due to the guests.

Great location straight on the beach.
Nice filling breakfast with fresh fruit, eggs, sweet potato pancakes and corn bread.

They are always cleaning, which is necessary given the location.
Great tour options (whales, baby turtle release, frog walk) and they try their best to communicate with the agencies and get you into a tour, which is great since the whale tours are often cancelled last minute.
Unbearably hot at night. Even though they are open, there is no air circulation in the dorms, as there is very little wind, so they are stuffy and stinky. Lots of sweaty human bodies and clothes trapped in an airless room.
Also it caused me to get a lung infection later because all the air and allergens stagnated in the room.
A single fan to aerate and cool the rooms would go a long way.
People are smoking inside, right next to the kitchen area, which is unhygienic, and next to reception. There's plenty of outdoor space so I don't understand why there can't be a seperate smoking area.
Kitchen equipment is pretty old. Fridge was full of uncovered fish and meat so it was really unhygienic.

Very lovely place in the middle of nowhere in El Valle. Restaurants close by and 20 min from El Valle centre. Very safe little town. We had the private room with seaview and it was fantastic. Owner is also very friendly and helpful and we did some very cool tours!

The location is super close to the beach (just like all the hostels in el Valle).
It felt like almost all the employees and guests already stayed here for a long time and they passively excluded the other guests from their group. The dorms were super small and didn’t have fans. And to go to the bathrooms and toilets you have to get 1 or 2 floors down. They do not have lunch or dinner and the nearest supermarket is a 25 min walk, the hostel never mentioned this. Bar closes super early.
Furthermore, everybody bitches about Utria hostel while that place is sooooo much better

Best place to stay in El Valle!
I really loved the vibe of Daniela and Emanuel, they are always happy to help and they really care for your well-beeing and safety.
It's a beautiful wooden house, with a well equiped kitchen and a lot of nice chill areas with hammocks etc.

Definitely the highlight of my stay in Colombia, this spot is an island of peace with great and caring staff & volunteers. Also a great spot to learn surfing with lessons and boards available for rent, also many organized tours which are lead by local guides (knowing some Spanish helps).

Friendly welcome, nice location on the beach and surfing. Breakfast costs 10’000 COP and is fine. Nice view from the rooms.
The rooms are open, no AC nor ventilation so nights are very warm. Expect animals in your room. Mattress is very uncomfortable and smells weird. During our 5 night stay, no cleaning of the rooms or fresh towels were offered. Sometimes you got the feeling that you annoyed the staff when you had questions, only volunteers were nice. Kitchen for common use, especially the fridge, was dirty. The restaurants around all serve the same food and supermarkets are very rare. We were informed that after 10:30pm we should not make any noise, nevertheless, the party is going on in the main house. Also, no one warned us that you needed to have cash with you, ATM is a 20min drive away and did not work. Finally, the Hotel was aware that our flight got cancelled but did not inform us.

relaxed hostel right on the beach. staff is very friendly and can tell you anything about what to do and where to go. a lot of surfing going on; they arrange lessons and rent boards.
hostel is built out of wood, so you can hear anything and feel when someone is walking the stairs, but wasnt very disturbing since its quiet during the night.

The kindness of the owners (Daniela and Emanuelle) as well as the front desk guy (Santiago). Location was perfect right in front of the sea and next to restaurants and bars.
They are tight with rules oriented to asure peoples sleep hours and rest.
Not a must; however it would be nice to have wifi al least to make the web checkin since celluar network is intermitent.

Nice place, nice location right in front of the beach, nice and friendly staff, diversity of people getting there. Very organized to have people comfortable, relaxed and safe. They offer an excellent service, good recommendations about activities and guidance for tours and surf.

Such a great hostel. Daniela was so kind and welcoming, she really made an already excellent hostel all the better. Location couldn't be better, right on the beach & town is only a short walk away. Coffee is available at all times and the kitchen is big and fully equipped. Comfy beds with mosquito nets. The cutest, friendliest pets. Couldn't recommend this place more.

If Paradise existed it would probably look like this! Thé place Is simple Yet so cosy! Excellent music, good Book sélection, games... Extremly well located on thé almejal beach, perfect spot to catch a sunset. The kittchen Is funcional, coffee Is provided, they have a brand new fridge. Thé quiet hours are respectéd wich Is awsome when you're there for thé nature. Daniela and Emmanuel are interesting people and Susanna Is thé sweetest, Always anticipating guests needs. This place definetly has a personality and i'm thinking about Moving there permanently!

The Pelican House offers a very friendly environment while staying in "El Almejal" beach. The staff will help you with whatever you require specially booking all the wild life outdoors activities and sightseeings. Daniela, the host, makes sure that you will have a pleasant time and gives advice on what to do and at what times. There is plenty that the beach offers so plan to stay more than a couple of nights. Some days, if you are lucky enough, you will enjoy whale watching at the beach right in front of the hostel. Remember, it's the wettest place on earth, but you will definitely find activities to do even while it's raining like it's the end of the world 😊

Decent place on the overall that has great potential but needs some improvement and it surely will become a great hostel.
The cats in the kitchen stealing food. (More plastic food boxes would be nice)
There is no space in the dorms to leave your stuff, no plug next to the bed (some hooks on the beds for hanging stuff and shelves could offer a bit more comfort).
The kitchen needs serious improvement (it needs more utensils, a decent cleaning every day and kitchen towels that are washed daily.
There are only 2 toilets/showers(in 1) which are in the common area.
You must cross a small river (up to your knees) to access the hostel. A simple small wooden bridge/pathway could offer a solution here.
The recommendations on tours are very biased. I feel like the different options could be offered in a more neutral way.

The Pelican is the best hostel to stay in El Valle. Jungle, beach, ocean, whales jumping every day, what more can you ask for?? The hostel is very clean and you feel at home right away. Stayed for two weeks and still didn't want to leave. Ofhorse I'll be back!!
