Reviewer Comments: My wife and I go to sugar mountain every year for my birthday which resides in January. Three of the main features that we look for and filtered through VRBO were: hot tub, pet friendly, and ski and ski out. Those three were the only requirements that we were looking for, and of the utmost importance. So my VRBO search landed us on the sugar shack. The price I thought was fair, so we booked it. Upon arrival on Monday January 9th, the first thing we did after unloading the car was head straight for the hot tub after a long ride to North Carolina. We noticed that the water was 49° in the hot tub. So I turned on the Jets and the heater and after a couple hours notice the water was not any warmer. I called the after hours maintenance line to discuss the issue and the young lady said she sent an email a week ago letting me know that the water did not work on the hot tub. I checked my email and she actually sent two days prior to our arrival, not 7 days. I explained to her that I was highly dissatisfied and she basically acted like it was a "tough luck" type of situation. Two days prior to our arrival there was no way we could have done anything about it regardless. Mind you my wife and I have worked again disappointed. So we then start checking the cleanliness of the house. We took multiple pictures of many areas that were not clean, blankets that had food stains on them, dried up spaghetti sauce or chili, the carpet in the master bedroom was disgusting with pet urine, shower head and master bathroom was full of mildew or mold. The ONLY shower upstairs. The heater on the back porch did not work, was not a ski in/ski out location or did not have designated walkthrough to slopes. I work in the construction industries and deal with the general consumer on a daily basis. The customer service that I received from the management company was subpar to say the least and ZERO effort in "Making the situation RIGHT for me the customer. Our expectations for cleanliness and quality of furnishing were not very high going into a pet friendly short-rerm rental. We were pleasantly surprises. It was actually one of the cleanest units we have stayed in the area, and we have stayed in many. Only complaint, mattress in master bedroom is way past needing replaced.

My friends and I loved staying at this place this past weekend! The size of the home, proximity to town and great hiking, and the hot tub were great for our group.

Wonderful stay in this lovely cabin on sugar mountain. Home was super comfortable and well-stocked with towels and dishes and everything we needed..

We had a great time relaxing at the Sugar Shack and exploring the area. The stairs in the house are steep. So just be careful walking up and down. Well equipped kitchen, plenty of seating and relaxing hot tub. Overall great stay and would recommend.

While I’d recommend the house (if they address the safety issue), I would not recommend the rental company. Upon check in the woman outlined a gazillion ways that the company would charge us more money and then when asked if we could have a late checkout, she confirmed it wasn’t a back to back rental. Then added that if we stayed past the checkout time it would cost $100. They are very obviously not customer service focused and only there for maximized profit.

We were told a couple of hours prior to check in that our hot tub wasn’t going to be usable during our stay. The hot tub is the reason we booked this property so finding out right before check in and not being given any other options was pretty disappointing. It was also very obvious no one had been up to the unit in days due to not seeing any foot prints in the snow leading to the hot tub and fresh snow laying on top of the cover. The driveway was icy and we had no warning before entering, and had to salt the driveway ourselves. Once we entered the cabin we noticed there was hardly any silverware or glasses and didn’t realize they were all in the dishwasher still until the second morning we were there. The only things provided are dishwasher tablets, garbage bags and salt and pepper in the kitchen, if you want to wash dishes bring your own dish soap. If you want to cook, bring your own oil. The home was clean, but was lacking in servers areas as detailed above. We are mostly upset about not being able to use the hot tub, and hardly being compensated for the issue.

Please note, however, that the driveway is extremely steep. It was a bit challenging getting up with all wheel drive. As such we only could have one vehicle parked there and the rest down at the resort parking. It took almost the full 3 days for the cabin to warm up but thankfully they have space heaters throughout. The one thing we wished they had is the keyless lock entry like a prior cabin we rented. Of the two sets of keys we received, only one worked. Overall we were extremely happy with our experience at sugar shack cabin.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time at the property, which had gracious spaces for us to enjoy. We had a surprising amount of winter weather during our stay, which made it actually impossible to get up the driveway, even with 4x4. We were able to as a compromise get off the main road so as not to interrupt traffic but we otherwise were not able to park close until our checkout day when it had warmed up. We also noticed the heat took quite a long time to bring the property to a comfortable temperature, with the cold outside the house heating took until the next day to reach a comfortable indoor temperature, and for a while was even getting slightly colder as temperatures dropped outside! For those staying in the rooms they were able to get by that evening with personal heaters placed in each bedroom but the unfortunate ones on the pullout couch had little options until the house warmed. Once the house heated we had a wonderful time enjoying the amenities (hot tub, porch fire table, etc.), And watching the snow after a day of skiing. We will definitely recommend this location to others.

We had a great visit, had everything we needed and more. Great location!!!

Entertainment center, wood burning indoor fireplace and hammock were in the listing but have been removed from property. Very musty pet odor on bottom floor. Would not have stayed if we had to sleep on the bottom floor. Cigarette butts were all around outside even though the listing says no smoking. The only heater that worked properly was the space heater in master bedroom. The toilet flapper in master bathroom was broken so the toilet ran constantly. The flood lights at the entrance steps were not working so we had to use phones to see at night and also lighting in hot tub area was not working. You can tell the place had been cleaned, but the property was showing it's age and needed maintenance inside and out. I would not stay again in the condition it is currently in.

This was a nice place and had all the comforts of home. It a quiet mountain town with other houses in the area, but not right on top of one another. I would definitely go back.

The bottles were there, but there was barely and in them and they were watered down and that’s all it looked like was water. I bought some while there. One of the brackets on the stairs broke as one of my friends was attempting to go downstairs.. I went to Lowe’s and bought/ replaced it. The carpet runners on the steps were NOT attached and made the stairs kind of dangerous. Bed was comfy in the room I was in ( bottom right side) The driveway is very steep!! I’m glad we had decent weather, I would not have been able to get up or down in the snow/ ice! I’d stay again when the weather is good.

The cabin is equipped with propane wall heaters AND built in electric Mitsubishi mini split units. I was told that the propane heater wasn't working but I don't think they knew that the other heat source wasn't working either. When I talked to the very nice lady about having no heat, a gentleman in the background was practically yelling at her to tell me that I just "needed to use the remote" to get the heat to work. He totally disregarded the fact that I was telling her it wasn't working. There was a repair man that came by the next day to fix the propane wall heater and he checked the Mitsubishi unit about found that it had been damaged by squirrels or something. I feel like they need to have someone check their properties more often to make sure everything is in working order. And I especially feel like the customer shouldn't be disregarded when making a complaint.

We really enjoyed our stay. The cabin has parking for 4-5 vehicles when parked strategically. The warning about 4wd in the winter should be heeded. There are about 20 steps to get to the upstairs living area. The interior staircase has carpet strips that are not attached to the floor. We removed them during our stay and replaced them at checkout, because my daughter in law fell down the steps when the carpet slipped. There are two bedrooms and one bathroom with a washer and dryer downstairs. There’s an outside entrance to the downstairs that has about 3 steps. The hot tub is also on the downstairs porch. The hot tub kept me skiing all 5 days we were there and is located under the upstairs decking making it sheltered from rain and snow. The upstairs has a master bedroom with a bathroom and an open kitchen and living space. The sofa had a tear in the back of the cushion, but was comfortable. There’s everything you’ll need to cook including a toaster and a regular brew coffee maker. The interior of the house does not have a wood burning fireplace as it has been removed. This was a disappointment for us. There’s a gas grill on the deck right under the camera. We really enjoyed our stay and had we been skiing at Sugar we could have possibly walked to the slopes. We could hear the snow blowers at night while we were outside, but not inside. If we decided to ski Sugar in the future we would definitely consider this cabin.

This house was great for my family and I. Hot tub, separate bedrooms for the kids, and plenty of room to relax. It is close to everything around Sugar and Banner Elk. Would rent again!

House was nicer than the pics showed and the location is top notch. Not sure if it was the rental company or the home owners that had the driveway cleared but we were so thankful. It is a pretty steep driveway but even with the recent snow it was cleared for us to pull up it. THANK YOU!! Hot tub was very nice and our kids loved it and the Hot water in the house was resort quality. Overall our stay was wonderful and was exactly what we needed. If we get the chance to stay here again we will for sure.

The cabin was very cozy and had tons to do without even leaving the property. If you do travel in the winter when there is snow on the ground, AWD is a must. We traveled in our brand new Honda Pilot and even with snow chains on the tires, could only get about 20 feet up the very steep driveway. The maintenance guys came by the 2nd day of our stay and shoveled the driveway for us and put rock salt down to help melt the snow and ice in the driveway which helped our parking situation, and they were a very friendly couple of guys who seemed to genuinely care for the quality of our stay. Would definately book this property again without hesitation. The pictures of the property are deceptive, but in the best of ways. As my wife stated, "it is way cuter than the pictures". So much carachter in a cozy cabin on the mountain!

The property was exactly what we needed. Great location, top of the mountain! The driveway is difficult in the snow, there is room to fit a car at the bottom, parallel if necessary. The hot tub worked great to get rid of all the aches from snowboarding all day. The kids loved playin around on the property! So quiet up there! Snow makes it so much better!!!
