The beautiful surroundings entirely made our stay! There are deer trails through the forest for daily walks as well as a quiet country road. The view from the deck is lovely - not another home in sight! We enjoyed a crackling fire in the fireplace on one cold foggy day which I’ll always remember. The interior does leave a bit to be desired/upgraded as far as decor goes, but the beds were comfortable and we found everything we needed in the kitchen. We loved our stay~

Very cozy and homey house. Almost like a fairy tale driving among the trees on a twisty country road to arrive at a house on a hill looking out over a sea of green forest (before foliage) and mountains in the distance. The owner, Mr. Gilpin was more than gracious to us, having to continue to change our booking dates due to COVID-19 in the past year. The house itself is warm and inviting with a wide deck to watch the sun go down, comedy couches and a large dining room for family meals. The downstairs is delightfully cool and has a wonderful almost earthen smell that takes me back to my grandparents houses and my own home in the northeast kingdom growing up. The only suggestions I have would be shades on living room windows to keep sun out in the hottest part of the day, maybe more fans, and a screen on the sliding door out to the deck. My husband wanted to leave a contribution to thank Mr. Gilpin and purchased a 24 inch flat screen TV in the upstairs bedroom on the desk. It is compatible to play station 4 or other gaming systems and will thrill any teens. Thank you again for such a wonderful stay!!

Great for families with kids. Lots of room to spread out. Toys and games for all ages. Close to biking trails, beautiful lakes for swimming and kayaking.. and of course near the famous Bread and Puppet Theater, the Museum of Everyday Things and the Highland Center for the Arts.

This is a spacious and comfortable home that is well-stocked. The location is great in fall, and there are a number of fun and interesting activities nearby (Bread and Puppet in the summer is a must!).

Pros- good size deck - property is secluded Cons- property description is not accurate. Makes me also question validity of a few reviews. Initially had a party of 11 to celebrate our 60th birthdays. Due to the pandemic it ended up only being a party at six due to the travel restrictions. Went downstairs to check out the bedrooms only to find it to be so musty we couldn’t sleep down there. Back upstairs to realize the oven door wouldn’t open and the bedroom on this floor smelled. Come to find out that bedroom is right next to the garage which had a lot of garbage in it. Further upstairs to check out the other beds to find it appeared the pull out sofa was broken or at the least looked broken. There were no instructions on how to run the TV. The furniture in the TV room was quite dated. The pond entrance was not marked. We walked a half mile down the road looking for the pond and found a path on the way back to the house. It’s quite a distance from the house - approx 1/4 mile. The dock is half underwater. The pond is murky and has leeches in it. Certainly not something we were going to swim in; although the homeowner assured me he and his family swim in it. He also assured me his son and his friends left the property the day we arrived - there was no complaint about the musty smell -he thought possibly my friends and I are sensitive.. We were so sensitive, we left a day early. Still had a good time because we’re good friends - it wouldn’t matter where we stayed. Shameful representation.

The house and property were great. The house is clean and well stocked. There is plenty of space in the house. The property allows for a number of things: hiking, swimming in the pond, building a fire in the firepit, and sitting on the deck looking out at the mountains (and sunset!). It was a quiet and at the end of a road, so I don't think I saw anyone the whole time. It is worth the short drive to both go and hike the Willoughby Mountain trail and grab pizza and drinks at Parker Pie.

Three families had a great long weekend at the house. Visited Hill Farmstead, skied Jay and Burke, and got in some snowshoeing and cross country skiing. We enjoyed the privacy and the remote location. Host was very nice to deal with.

Good calm place to stay

We had an awesome New Year's stay at the Gilpin's house! We were a group of ten (in our 30s) and it was perfect for us. The basement has one room with 3 singles and another with a queen or king, first floor has a bedroom with a queen/double, and the second floor has a large open room with a queen/double and another room with a king. There's a bathroom on each floor (tub and separate shower on first floor and tub/shower on the second floor). The kitchen was very well-stocked with cooking utensils, pots/pans, large coffee maker, multiple french presses, etc. and with basic cooking ingredients (including a well-stocked and extremely well-organized spice drawer). The layout of the first floor is great for hanging out, as the kitchen/dining area is totally open and that connects to the den/living room area with a fireplace. Very cozy spot! We also enjoyed some awesome sledding down the hill in front of the house. The house is about 20 mins from the Craftsbury Outdoor Center and also about 20 mins from Parker Pie, and not far from Hill Farmstead either, although we didn't have time to make it to the latter 2. We were lucky to get 6+ inches of snow (following some sleet/freezing rain) while we were there, but it did make the drive to/from the house a little challenging. Fortunately, we followed the town plow down White Road on our way in, and we called Rob to have the driveway plowed. Ultimately we were fine (even in a Corolla with summer tires) but it's definitely important to have good tires, and 4/AWD are even better! Overall, a great house for a larger group! We hope we can spend New Year's here again!

This property fit our Biathlon Team very well. Only issue we had was could not get up the drive on arrival. Gave Rob a call and snowplow was there within an hour. Recommend when winter driving in this area, definitely snow tires and AWD highly encouraged. Great views in the am. We will be booking this property again for our Team when racing / training at Craftsbury Outdoor Center. Tim Hurley Chelsea Biathlon Club

Pleasant property. Very beautiful surroundings. Little harder to get to than we assumed. It was very rainy and the roads aren’t well lit. The house was very big. We were to travel with 5 couples, but some, cancelled. There are enough beds, but not arranged for couples. More for parents with children. We had a few minor issues, not very well cleaned and a bit out dated, but Rob was very responsive. All in all Vermont is beautiful. We had a terrific time.

This is a beautiful house in a beautiful setting, a great place to get away for some peace and quiet. We were there for a three-generation, ten-person reunion, and had a great weekend. Pros: A nice house, with lots of space for common meals and relaxing, with wonderful outdoor spaces (a great deck as well as a private pond just down the hill). Beautiful views of rolling hills and woods. No other houses in sight. Cons: Two bedrooms are in the basement, which means they get less light. They also smelled a bit musty until we got them aired out. The three bedrooms upstairs (main floor and second floor) are great.

Property was as described. Owner/property manager was very responsive. We had a great time.

We really enjoyed our stay at this house - I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 because the two downstairs bedrooms were very musty and damp and that is where the second king size bed is. Other than that the house worked very well and we appreciated the well stocked kitchen.

We attended a wedding in Hardwick. Rob’s place worked out great. It was very roomy and had all the needed amenities. Luckily, on our last night, the skies cleared and we had amazing views of the stars and constellations. Thanks Rob.

Snowy driveway was a challenge but the owner was responsive to our request for more plowing. Basement bedrooms were not as comfortable as the 3 upper level ones. Beautiful location with incredible sunsets.

It was a bit tough to get there on a snowy January night but we made it and settled in fine. There were some bug issues and (ladybugs!) and the internet wasn't working when we were there but Rob was super helpful and offered discount, which we appreciated. Otherwise the kitchen was well stocked and the house worked out well for our group.

This was a nice rental for people attending a local wedding.

Wonderful views in a peaceful, rural setting. Loved the fire pit and the deck. Thank you for a kitchen well stocked with spices, utensils, etc. This is a great house to experience the true peace and quiet of northern Vermont! The only frustration (and a blessing, too!) was the wifi connection did not provide any internet connection. Also, a caution about finding the house via GPS: DO NOT TRY TO ACCESS WHITE ROAD FROM ROCKING ROCK ROAD. Access is from Shadow Lake Road (sometimes called Mud Island Road).
