Our Captain Cook stay was pure bliss! Tucked away from the hustle & bustle, this spacious haven offered 3 separate living areas – perfect for a group getaway. The open kitchen was a chef's dream, & local dining options (15 min drive) were fantastic. Snorkeling at Two Step Beach was the icing on the cake!

Our family had an amazing stay at this house on the Big Island. Our party consisted of my husband and myself, our two teenage boys (15 and 16) and my husband's parents who are in their late 60's. The house was in perfect condition when we arrived. We loved cooking breakfast in the outdoor kitchen area and sharing a rainy afternoon spread out across the expansive porch facing the beautiful ocean. There was plenty of space for all of us to spread out or meet together. We drove (and walked) to the beach that was just down the hill from the house. I would like to note that the beach that is closest is a rockier beach, but that's what most of this area of the Big Island is. My boys and I loved exploring the rocky shores. There were several little "nooks" that some locals showed us to hang out in. All of it, including the house, was really breathtaking. Communication with the owner/manager was really easy and they were very responsive. I would definitely recommend this property to anyone. Mahalo for an incredible stay!

We will definitely book this home again in the future! The house has amazing Hawaiian vibes with an open air kitchen, views to die for, and separate bedroom pods for privacy.

Absolutely beautiful view, loved the outdoor feeling, the geckos, the garden, the sunsets. Outdoor kitchen was fabulous—made cooking magical. Comfortable beds. Worked out great for the five of us. A great place to relax away from the touristy area downtown.

My teen and tween decided this was “the best rental we’ve ever stayed in.” We loved the outdoor kitchen/dining with the indoor bedrooms. View and location are amazing. You could stay with a larger group and still have privacy due to the layout. Clean, had everything we needed. And we had fun counting lizards.

Property is beautiful - just as described. Directions were perfect, ease of check in and communication were great.
Only two downsides - the check in/checkout times of 4:00pm and 10:00a are a little bit of a stretch for those parties (like us) staying just one night. We knew ahead of time and accepted the guidelines, but it’s such a beautiful property, you want to enjoy for as long as possible.
The main downside was excavation work being done by a large Caterpillar just 50 feet away. We arrived at around 5:00p, and the noise was constant until 6:00p. We couldn’t enjoy the sound of the ocean and birdsong over the Cat. Someone was there on the lot working until 7:00p, and they returned at 10:00a the next morning, just as we were leaving. Not that the owners can help that, but I would want to know if there was a construction project starting that would be ongoing every day during a stay.
But for that, have full confidence that you’ll love the home and set up - plenty of plates, cookware, amenities, etc. Will hopefully stay again, once the next door project is complete!

What a fantastic property. The sunset views were breathtaking every night. The neighborhood is quiet and beautiful. We spent every waking hour outside, cooking, eating, lounging around the lanai. It was an easy walk down to the local park (Manini Beach) and a harder uphill walk home but not long. Also, no grocery stores or restaurants in easy walking but since we cooked all our own meals that wasn’t a problem. We loved this place!

Our family had a wonderful stay in this crazy amazing home. The property is beautiful, and spacious. The view of the Captain Cook monument and bay is stunning. Palea the cat is cool she shows up couple times a day to be friendly and get a snack. Kids loved her. The house is BIG. You are an overlooking one of the best snorkeling reefs. Laundry was nice and the bathrooms- just wow! Thanks Gus for your hospitality. We hope to return here in the future.

This home is unlike any other place I have stayed. It is exactly as described but I just couldn’t picture it. The winding scenic drive getting there was beautiful in itself but once we swung open the bamboo gates and stepped inside, the view (times perfectly at sunset) was breathtaking. The home had everything we needed and nice quality. The linens and towels were nice and the beds were very comfortable. It’s a first to have an outdoor kitchen like that and we loved it. There is an outdoor daybed that I would’ve loved to have taken home! Gus was easily accessible and answered all our questions. I was a little nervous about the reviews mentioning bugs, but being from Louisiana, it was nothing. Would most definitely stay here again.

Such a cool open air experience in Hawaii, so much room for 6 adults to spread out and relax. Spectacular view of K-bay and sunsets. Gus & Maggie are A++.

We stayed at this property for 7 nights. It was the absolutely most perfect place for us. It was amazing. Between the flowering tropical plants, the open kitchen and the deck that runs the entire length of the home, the amazing weather and gorgeous views, we didn't want to leave. Gus was great. Attentive, and offered suggestions when we asked. There is a covered parking area for your vehicle. The house was very well equipped. The beds were comfortable. The kitchen was well stocked, too. We didn't have problems with bugs. We kept the lights low at night in the open areas. We kept the house open and the breeze did an excellent job of keeping the indoor spaces quite comfortable. My husband and I spent most of the mornings sipping our coffee and watching the kayaks and some swimmers! heading across the bay towards the Captain Cook monument. The area was very quiet, which was perfect for us. Our kids loved Paele, the house cat. She was very friendly, and showed up for pets and the occasional snack. Be sure to read the handbook for the home. It contained lots of useful info about stores, restaurants and beaches. We enjoyed Manini Beach. The caretaker there was very friendly and told us about the area and the community gardens. It was a great place to watch the sunset. We are so glad that we stayed at this property. It exceeded all of our expectations.

We had an incredible vacation at this amazing home. Really, one of a kind and words cannot describe the experience. We are very outdoors-y people and LOVED the emersion in nature that this home offers. The open air was incredible and the view from the deck was surreal. We loved all of the quirks, including the bugs and geckos that became part of our vacation experience. And Pa'ele the kitty was so sweet and so much fun (with evening entertainment of her wild kitty hunting excursions). We also loved the local beach (Manini beach) which is about at 10-15 minute walk from the house down the roads and driveways through the beautiful scenery. We like to be in the water snorkeling and Manini did not disappoint (even saw an octopus twice while snorkeling). The local beach hosts were incredible and helped to keep the beach quiet and peaceful as part of the Hawaii culture. You can also relax on the grass--not your typical sand beach, which isn't our thing anyways. But if you are a lay in the sand beach person, this beach may not be your thing. If you are looking for an air conditioned resort with all of the amenities of a pampered vacation, this is not the place for you. But if you are looking for a one of a kind Hawaii experience with nature, this place is out of this world. We love the Honaunau-Napoopoo area of the big island-- much better than the north Kona area and other resort areas of the island. Gus was an amazing host- we will def come back when we visit Hawaii!

Our family fell in love with this property. The open air kitchen was perfect for family dinners. We did have to get some citronella candles to keep mosquitoes away but that’s fairly expected up in the trees on an open lanai. What we loved best was the open feel with just enough quality touches without feeling so fancy you couldn’t relax. Even our teenagers asked to come back to this house some day.
Check in was easy , communication was great via email. We had the late flight in so it was nice to be able to just flop onto a clean bed when we hit the house. Pantry storage was a little tight for our Costco run but almost everything went into the fridge to avoid bugs.
The views were spectacular. The Murphy bed in the living room gave us the third room with a bathroom we needed for our teenage son. Easy drive to anything you want to do. Definitely follow the directions from the property owner email to make it an easy find.
This made for a relaxing, beautiful, homey vacation!

We stayed at three locations on the island during our trip and this is the one my kids didn't want to leave. Amazing view, quiet, clean, well stocked.
The cat that comes with the property was a fun surprise.

We had a great stay at this property. Kitchen was well stocked and house was clean. Gus, our host, was very helpful. We enjoyed having the 🐈⬛ visit us. Beds were comfy and washroom facilities were well appointed.
Just a couple of things to note:
- because of the outdoor nature of the property there were a lot of mosquitos and bugs on day 1. Surprisingly not too bad on day 2. In spite of bug spray, we got bit a lot!
- again, this is an open concept house with stairs leading up from the yard, straight into the deck. We were never concerned about security, but something to keep in mind.

This is a very cool house. Amazing views. Spend hours playing cards, enjoying cocktails on the porch. Downside is that it is a little buggy as others have mentioned. Once the sun went down, it was almost unbearable to be on the porch. Bugs, roaches. Again, all expected as it is outside and Hawaii, but something to take into consideration.
It is also not as private as the pictures may indicate. There is surrounds homes and a home being built across the driveway.
Would still very much recommend. Pictures do not do the view justice.

This property was so unbelievably amazing and tranquil that we didn't want to leave! Seriously. Personally loved the outdoor living space, finding ourselves just relaxing and taking in the beautiful view. Sunsets, moonsets, tropical breeze, native birds (no roosters!) and the sounds of ocean created a complete zen state of mind. Mahalo for sharing your slice of paradise, Gus!

My wife and I along with our 4 kids had an incredible time at this location. The room situation was perfect for us to divide up into pairs. Our daughters took one room off to the side, our boys took the murphy bed and pull out couch in the middle gathering area and my wife and I took the master bedroom that was also situated off to the side. The rooms were great because they all had their own bathrooms and were basically like mini suites. The best part was all of the outside space. A balcony connected all of the rooms and had plenty of sitting space (couches, stools, lounge chairs and tables) for our enjoyment. The other part we enjoyed was that the kitchen is outside, but covered and safe from the elements. It was great waking up and sitting at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee to enjoy the outside atmosphere. We also saw whales in the bay from our balcony the first and second evening!
The location was perfect in that it was only a short walk down to the water and kayak rentals were also close by (both guided and do it yourself) in order to explore the bay below. A beautiful stretch of sand beach is also nearby and is probably a well kept secret with the locals ( a must visit).
We would definitely return again.
Also, a big thank you to Gus for all of his help getting us the items we needed and being a real cool dude!

Our family of 6 loved everything about this rental. Gus is a hard-working, friendly host. The view from the Lanai is unbelievable. The rental is located in a quiet neighborhood and its close proximity to Captain Cook make it an ideal location for people wanting to snorkel in the area. We hope to go back someday!

We spent a week in December at this unique property, and really loved it. The views and privacy are amazing, and the owner was nearby whenever we need him (which was not often). The layout of this place is unique with most of the common areas outdoor under a large deck that connects the three master bedrooms. Pictures are accurate. To love this place you will need to be comfortable with lots of geckos, some bugs, etc. If you leave the lights on outdoors at night you may attract a lot of harmless tiny gnats, which we quickly learned to avoid. All part of being outdoors in this wonderful part of Hawaii. I'd call it luxury plus funkiness. Everything worked great and the place was well stocked - great dishes, appliances, some spices and basic food prep stuff, snorkel gear, beach towels. There is also an outdoor cat that spends time on the deck, and was a real pleasure. We look forward to returning.

Clean, well-maintained, recently remodeled 3-bedroom (the center bedroom doubles as the living room) home overlooking Kealakekua Bay. Wonderful view, lanai, furnishings, comfortable bed.
Gus was a great host--helpful, communicative, friendly.
I was a little unsure about a one-week stay in a place without A/C, but the fans along with the Makai and Mauka breezes kept everyone comfortable.
I was also unsure about a place with an outdoor kitchen, but that worked out great also after we put a floor fan on us to repel any insects.
You need to be comfortable with geckos and little lava lizards inside and out in Hawaii--they're cute, harmless, and help keep the insects in check. They'll also clean up food bits left out in the kitchens, so you learn to clean up after each meal :-)
Only downside to consider is access to this house is up a steep drive--it is walkable down to the bay, but takes a strong hiker to get back up. I ended up driving down to swim/snorkel at Manini each time.
It is quiet and there is the breathtaking view. We would rent this wonderful place again.

Great place to stay! Comfortable accommodations and stunning views! Gus, the property manager, was accommodating and attentive when we had questions. Also, house kitty was a fun plus! I would definitely stay here again.

Michael and Gus have a singular experience with this extraordinarily scenic house. It is perfect for two-three couples who need privacy (3 separate pods conveyed by the porch) but also a desire to share a common area with powerful, dramatic view. The outdoor kitchen is awesome and makes you want to stay home, save money and cook up your favorite dish. We cancelled two dinners in town because the best vista we encountered on the island was literally this property’s expansive back porch. Michael and Gus are fabulous hosts who are just the right amount of attentive. Book this soon because if you wait till next year you will be competing with my family because we are coming back for sure - LOL.

We loved this place! We stayed for 10 nights and wished I could have stayed longer. The back deck is awesome. The open air kitchen leading onto it is fun. Great view of K Bay and amazing sunsets every night.
Captain Cook has everything we needed after our initial Costco stop. I would give a shout out to Shaka Tacoz, Teshima, Kei'ei, and Blackrock pizza.
The thing that I didn't realize prior to going is that it took 10-15 minutes to get into town along a winding road. It was totally worth it for the feeling of solitude you get when sitting on the deck enjoying the view and then HI weather.
We enjoy snorkeling a lot and this property is well situated. Mostly we went to 2 step which is a 10-15 minute drive along a lightly used back road. Being so close made it easy to get there bright and early while parking is easy and it is less crowded. We walked 10-15 minutes down Mannini beach a couple of times and it was very nice. Lastly we rented a Kayak from Ehu and Kai just south of Mannini a had a lovely morning snorkeling by the Captain Cook monument.
Be aware that there is a lot of open air living space here. There were unfortunately some flies and mosquitos. Once we figured out how to avoid them they troubled us very little. (fans, citronella, frequent trash longer changes, etc.)
I hope to return in the future! Gus and Maggie were excellent and responsive hosts and the property is stunning.

Beautiful vistas from an expansive veranda. Plenty of space and privacy for 5 adults. Very comfortable beautiful house, and well provided in kitchen, bathroom, laundry & in general. Tricky to find and not much info about what to do/ where to go locally.

The house is one of a kind with open air views from the entire length of the house including kitchen and master bath. It’s incredibly beautiful. You can see Captain Cook’s Monument from the house.
The house is well appointed with everything you’ll need for a comfortable stay including beach gear and bug zappers. I can’t recommend this unique beauty enough.

This property was perfect for our fam of four. Plenty of comfortable space to laze about and gecko watch. The house is all about the view, which never gets old. There are quite a few bugs in the outside space (of course!) and as the sun is going down it can get quite hot (again, of course--it's August!) but that's outdoor living in August in Hawaii. There are outside shades that can be drawn while cooking and eating which significantly cuts down on the glaring sun. The shower in the master bath is tremendous, the property grounds are gorgeous. The house is a two minute drive to the bay and beach and snorkeling gear is provided. We loved Pele the kitty, and Gus was super nice as well! ;) We would love to return in the future.

Amazing views
We had a wonderful week at this house, lived on the deck the whole time watching the sunsets over Kealakekua Bay, absolutely beautiful. The house is lovely and has an outdoor kitchen, very comfortable. Gus was a great host, so friendly and knowledgeable about the island. We wouldn’t hesitate to stay here on our next trip to the big island. Aloha 🌺

Beautiful view and home
We really enjoyed our stay in this house. The view of the bay is perfect. The home is very private and away from the tourist traffic/noise. However, it was close enough to make a quick drive to anything. We snorkeled in several places around the island but most enjoyed the snorkeling in the bay (by Captain Cook monument). We would absolutely stay here again.

Amazing, Private View
The location of this house is perfect! Far enough away to feel private but very close to tons of sights and restaurants. It was the perfect base for exploring the island for a week!

Most amazing stay—truly special
I cannot say enough about how amazing this location is for families or friends. We saw whales, dolphins, horses, fireworks, stunning sunsets and so much more while we cooking and eating. All the pictures actually don’t do the view justice. Moreover, it is sufficiently close (ie within a couple hours) to many things but also isolated enough (you feel away from it all). Please read about the history of this amazing bay before or while you are there—it all adds to the experience. Snorkeling is great in several places around the bay not just by the monument. We have already told several others about it and would even consider coming back when we visit again. My kids said to tell everyone the cat was a fun companion for the week.
