Reviewer Comments: We booked a two week stay in Whalehead Beach through Carolina Shores Vacation Rentals in July. This was an older home and we knew from the rental pictures that we were not expecting a modern and updated home. However, we did expect a clean and well taken care of home, which was not the case. When we arrived, we found cobwebs all over the dining room chandelier, filthy screens, broken or missing chairs in the porch room and pool area, dark light bulbs, a ruined volleyball net, and a pool deck and lawn that were not well taken care of. Furthermore, there were also small items that bothered us such as limited (and cheap) deck chairs with no tables, and no toilet paper or soap in the bathrooms. And the dated two section couch in the living room was in horrible condition, with stains and tears throughout the couch. We called the rental company right away to get some of these items fixed, and it took almost a week, having to call three times to get some of these items taken care of, and what we got was the bare minimum. I get it that everyone is short staffed, but we expected more and were very disappointed in the upkeep of the house as well as the service levels. I wonder if the owners know the level of focus their house is getting.

The house was very clean when we got there. There are a few small things some might quibble with: ice makers don’t work, kitchen lacked some things like dish towels and a rack for drying dishes, we had to ask for a broom, and the hot tub cover is broken, but the pool is nice, the linens were on the beds when we got there, and it’s soooo close to the beach! It’s not fancy but it was a good place for us. Only big concern is that when it rained hard some of the doors leaked water in and made for squishy carpets.

None of the refrigerators had ice makers, there were spider webs inside and outside, the pool area furniture was dirty, and the one dresser in our master bedroom was broken. We were told that the house would be updated with the new ownership, but many of these issues were reported before.

The carpet and floors were so dirty I wasn't comfortable in bare feet at all. Deck is really worn and I had to remove a splinter from one guest who walked out there in bare feet. I was nervous walking on the outside stairs as they are really worn. Couches are stained and uncomfortable. Kitchen was pretty good. Back yard is a pit, don't expect to use the volleyball net as its all broken. Pool is nice. Location is great, quick walk to beach. Quiet street. House needs some serious TLC.

We booked this place for a family beach trip with my 3 adult children, husband, toddler, mother-in-law and dog. The pros- the number of bedrooms and bathrooms was great for a large number of people. The pool was really nice and great for adults and the toddler. Outdoor shower was great to rinse off sand and warm water meant the toddler tolerated it. Short walk to the beach and beach was wide and new ramp meant fewer stairs. Cons- the carpet desperately needs to be replaced. The carpet in the entry was wet when we arrived and reminded wet the entire time even though we dried off before going inside. It smelled like bad BO in the stair well going to the top floor, likely due to the carpet. Many dressers were missing handles making them unusable. Such an easy fix, bit really characterized the place. It needs a lot of TLC and a deep clean.

The walk to the beach was less than 5 minutes, super close to the walking path that accommodated our wagon which pulled all of our beach necessities. The house was very tidy and well cared for. The hot tub and pool were well maintained and the “pool boys” were awesome in attending to the cleaning. Working with Carolina Shores staff couldn’t have been easier as they were very responsive prior to booking our stay and during our entire stay at this property. I cannot say enough good things and am looking forward to booking our visit for next year!

Great lots of room and everything we needed

When we arrived to the home there was a for sale sign out front. Didn’t think much of it until we walked in. It’s definitely not the nicest house in the neighborhood but it got the job done for our group. THE LOCATION WAS AMAZING! Full stop. 500 ft from the water and an easy street to walk up and down on. Certain things were annoying though. The dish washer never really fully cleaned or the fridge that failed to make ice. But the big negative was the last day as we were leaving, a weird smell was coming from the lower floor and it smelt horrific. It was most likely the septic tank because the shower and bath clogged constantly on the first floor and I guess it just gave up on the last day. So the for sale sign makes sense because this place needs and deserves some TLC.

All the blankets on the beds were so dusty we could not use them. Carpets have seen better days stains everywhere. Screens were broken, on all levels. Couch on lower level was torn apart a lot of the leather was off the cushion and back of couch. Main level couch and love seat were stained and ripped up. We put a bed sheet to cover them. House was big enough for out group. Pictures were deceiving, back yard was a dump said there was a volleyball net nothing but garbage and overgrown weeds. Cigarette butts everywhere, driveway and screened porch. Definitely need to be cleaned more. Don't think I will stay here again or recommend it to anyone.

For the most part the photos were very accurate and the family had a great time. We were a little disappointed by the very dirty AC vents and the water damage in the basement. Also the pool table was a disaster. We made the most of all the other great amenities and would consider this rental again next year.

Reviewer Comments: The house was not clean when we arrived, not vacuumed, the kitchen was not cleaned. There were dead bugs all over the walls from the many past tenants killing bugs.. Items were broken upon arrival, like the pool table, the patio seat cushions, the grill cover.. there were cockroaches in the house (not all over but where theres one..) and the pool area had a wasp nest.. day before leaving a piece of wood from the top porch fell off and hit my mothers car breaking the windshield.. not all the tvs could be on at once, something about the cable box. The pool was great. the beach is perfect and about a 3 min walk to the sand.. there were bikes, and a grill and a basketball hoop all things that helped us to overlook the other items. simple maintenance and a good cleaning service and the house would be 5 stars.

It is a true 3 min walk to the beach, the beach access doesnt have many stairs so my 90 year old grandparents were able to make it out there twice. Pet friendly is a SUPER PLUS as my pups love love love the beach. This house had everything for the kitchen and great updated sink and counters. Only thing is the kitchen utensils were a bit worn out, and the baking sheets and cutting boards also have seen their day. Great Fiestaware plates made up for all of that though. the carpet was great at hiding the sand, but a bit worn in places. We had a small bout with plumbing but who can prevent the previous tenants from flushing paper towels... not anyone's fault, was fixed rather quickly. Overall i would stay there again in a heart beat. thank you!

It needs some tlc of any type. When we arrived the inside was not clean. We had to clean before we could do anything and that could be because it was not rented the week before. The grass was not cut so we could not use the volleyball at all. It did not get cut until Thursday. The totes from the people who stayed there from 2 weeks prior of their linen was still there. They were left opened and soaked therefore it smelled. Any type of update would help this property. The back door along side has no spring on the door and it slammed the back of the one of the guest back leg it was a little kid and he could not move fast enough, it cut his leg up pretty good . It just appeared that owner does not want to take care of the property. Customers have a lot of choices with different homes to rent why not make this property more desirable so everyone will want to rent this property. I understand it costs a lot of money to take care of a property of this size. Again the property took care of the immediate need

This year we were all very disappointed with the condition of the rental property. I would not recommend staying here until maintenance are completed on the property. The picture used for this property does not show the rotting wood and all the chipped paint throughout the entire property. The deck needs to be resurfaced it. It is splintering and has nails poking through. The furniture and carpets are dirty and stained. The patio furniture cushions are torn and worn. The pool was not cleaned the week we were there. The refrigerator on the first floor is rusted and dirty. The dryer does not work properly; takes three times to dry one small load. The diswasher racks do not stay on tracks and are difficult to manuver. The property is laid out horribly. Three bedrooms on the second floor share one bathroom. The interactive map show the on suite master bath is shared. It is not. The second floor on suite master had a leak and the faucet needed to be replaced. The vacuum cleaner smoked when it was plugged in. The overall condition of the property is very poor.

The house we stayed in last year included the linens in the price of the rental. The house has a shag carpet throughout. I would have preferred tile because we had no way of knowing if the carpet was clean. Bring your own pillows. Some of the pillows were dirty with a blood spot. There were no protective coverings on the pillows. The upholstery on the furniture in the den needed to be cleaned. We could not use the gas grill on the property so we bought a small charcoal grill. The outside needs alot of maintenance. The pool is very nice and we enjoyed using it every day. The beach is close and was beautiful. The kitchen was well stocked.
