Old style plantation house. Very spacious. The decks are great for hanging out. Direct water access with all kinds of water toys available. The koi pond and downstairs is beautiful. The only things that weren’t ideal were that the locks and door handles are old, so you have to make sure you turn the knob back to ensure it’s closed. Not ideal for a 1 year old who was able to push through all the doors, and there were red ants on the koi railings, poles, and some areas downstairs which bit a few of us. But overall amazing. We will be back.

There's alot of positives about this house. Great location, big kitchen. Plenty of bathrooms. Kayaks and paddle board, right on the pond. Downstairs bedrooms were very damp and musty. House could use a good cleaning.

If you read all the reviews, you will have an unferstanding of what you are getting yourself into. We enjoyed the house, the property and the location. At night, the coqui frogs can sound loud. We only heard 2 but we have been on properties were there are 100's. The trucks across the street can be lound also. But ear plugs can fix both of them. The scenery and access to the pond outweighs the noise. We kayaked every day and swam right off the back porch. The house was warm when we entered but quickly cooled off once windows were opened. We didnt use the down stairs rooms but the did smell musty, but that would probably disappear once windows were open. Both down stairs rooms have air conditioning. In conclusion, you are not paying for a high class resort, you are paying for the location and access to the pond and ocean, and because of that i felt it was worth it and would return. Check in/out procedures could have been better, as we didnt receive instructions and had to ask minutes before our arrival.

A wonderful place for our family to get together! Large kitchen, beautiful furniture, great places around the house to hang out. AC kept everyone comfortable. A dip in "Ice Pond" and the use of the kayaks and stand-up paddle board was fun. Loved feeding the large Kois and Turtle. Mahalo for allowing us to stay in your home. Ohana

Old home but comfortable. Main floor had three bathrooms which was nice. Bottom floor not usable to us because the door jams are so low you crack your head on them. The laundry downstairs was usable and welcome. The outside bathroom in my opinion is not doable at night. It would be usable when it’s daylight.

We loved our time here. We enjoyed the ice pond and kayaking and paddle boarding. We walked to coconut island everyday and enjoyed the nature around us. The air conditioner was a huge help to keep us cool at night. Would def stay there again.

House was great. Location was amazing. Right on the bay. We were able to enjoy the fish birds and turtles. The toys in the boathouse were great and accommodated my family. Beds were comfy and water was hot. We throughly enjoyed our time here.

Richard’s property is Amazing and Beautiful! Great Family house and close to literally everything. Food truck lot next door and many fantastic restaurants close by some even in walking distance! It sits right on a koi/honu pond and the ice pond is literally your back yard! Nice big lanai and great pulehu set up downstairs, We enjoyed the convenience of the paddle boards and kayaks. I absolutely love the older plantation style houses but this house also has a modern feel to it. This Hale Will definitely be our top booking every time we come back to Hilo!!!

This is our third time staying here and we enjoy it so much thank you Richard for letting us stay in your home!! It’s closer to restaurants the nice paddling board in ice ponds it’s awesome. We will be coming back again!!

Enjoyed our stay at this very unique home on the water. We where close to alot that the Hilo side had to offer. We enjoyed breakfast on the back porch, being close to the water, and with in walking distance to restaurants. The KOI pond was awesome and we enjoyed watching them. The home did have a musty smell on arrival but candles that where left helped.

This Hilo house had everything we needed and was located close to stores and restaurants. The paddleboards and kayaks were a hit with the kids! It rained a lot while we were there and sitting on the covered back deck was magical. Lots of birds and geckos, and a super short walk to a beautiful park too. The Owner was really easy to work with. We loved being in Hilo. Great trip!

This unique home is a 1933 cottage built over a stone fishpond right on the water in Hilo. That’s both the good news and the bad; it’s a unique and lovely place, but if you’re expecting modern luxury, this isn’t this place for you. The location is also both good and bad; it’s located on the Ice Pond with a gate from the back yard into Kuhio Kalanianaole Park, but it’s also directly across the street from Suisan Warehouse, and the big trucks start rolling in around 5 AM. You’ll need to decide for yourself the the beautiful bird-filled waterfront backyard outweighs the street noise from the front. We loved it.

Property owner was very quick to respond to all inquiries and questions. The rooms in the basement has insects but they are open to the pond area so to be expected. Laundry facilities are nice

We got in late and check-in was simple and as described. Upon climbing into bed we noticed dirty sheets and sand in the bed, so we changed all the bedding. I'm pretty glad we noticed this because the following morning after I woke up I seen the dirty panties hanging from the headboard. That day my (young) kids also found a weed vape pen in the couch. There were dead geckos in the doors (not fresh by any means, poor guys had been there a while and is now becoming one with the house). While clearing the house at check-out we found a %3#!$ ring under a bed, not the decorated bed either. Thankfully we did not need the two separated rooms on the ground level because surely they are not inhabitable. Other reviews mention the mustiness and I agree. I tried giving the owner the benefit of the doubt on all this, Initially I reached out to him the first morning there regarding the dirty bed just wanting to give him a heads-up. As an owner I would absolutely want to know if my renters were welcomed with dirty beds.. He did not respond, however his property manager randomly showed up and stood outside arguing with us, claiming the house was available for 3 days and the windows must have blown dust in. We showed him photos, and even the dead geckos in the door. He walked around and also took photos. The owner finally reached out to me days later, and when I responded with everything else that had came up along with photos I never got a response back. This is clearly a party house and not a family house. It is unfortunate, because the house itself really does offer some charm. The pond was beautiful, the critters such a fun touch. Overall we did make sure to enjoy our time there. The fish come when called and were so much fun to watch, same with the turtle. We also spotted crabs along the rocks. That was definitely the main highlight of the house. Beautiful view from the deck. As other reviews have mentioned the noise from the restaurant parking lot next door can get a bit much, I agree. The food is delicious though.

Stayed here with family after flying back home from out of town. We are from Hilo so it was nice to get back home and be so close to all the things we wanted to do/experience. Located super close to Keaukaha General Store (good snacks, local products, and a great Coffee Shop) as well as local eats like Millies, Coconut Grill, Ponds etc. The picture don't really do it justice, its bigger than it seems in the photos and our family had a great time. The manager/caretaker Remie stopped by to check on us too and was a great guy. Hoping to stay again next time we are in town. Mahalo Richard!

Very beautiful home and so much space to accommodate a large family. Host was very responsive and easy to communicate with. I would recommend this home to a large family because it is very spacious and close to so many amenitites.

Reviews have been accurate. We found the location very convenient. Having the house right on Ice Pond was a huge draw as we had lots of kids. Also nice was having a park right next door. We were in Hilo for a family reunion and having the back deck available for cousins to drop in and “talk story” was also very nice. The house was a disappointment. It was not clean and the oven/stovetop was not installed correctly and had to be fixed while we were there. We also had light bulbs that were out and a toilet that had to be fixed several times. The basement bedrooms were moist and musty. We did appreciate the extra fans and AC units. We were also there during road construction closure and traffic at times was busy. It was also noisy due to being next to the airport and main road.

We enjoyed our stay and plan on coming again. They loved paddle boarding and kayaking, taking a dip in the cold brackish water. My little grandson enjoyed feeding the fishes and turtle in the koi pond. I needed a nice place to relax for my birthday. It was beautiful. With 5 bedrooms everyone had their own space to chill. I loved the outside deck where I could take pictures of my family enjoying themselves and watch birds. The kitchen provided everything we needed as my chefs prepared my bday brunch. It was, relaxing, enjoyable and very rejuvenating for me (the birthday celebrant). I have a health condition and my daughter, her family, my other grandkids and their family wanted to take me somewhere I can relax and they still can enjoy too. I love watching the kids and their kids enjoying, we all had a great weekend. I know I loved it 🥰! Thank You 😊

Koi fish swimming on the pond below the house was a really good treat for a vacation. On occasions, spotting a turtle is a delight. Location is much appreciated despite the construction happening.

Everything about this house is quirky - its location, its layout, its amenities. It is located in the "industrial" region of Hilo near the airport and away from most other houses, about 2 miles to downtown. Its backyard has access to Hilo Bay and there are 2 kayaks and and a water-logged paddleboard available to use. We paddled to Coconut Island and jumped off the cement tower a few times. The interior of the house caught us off guard. On initial viewing, you get the impression of an old run-down house. However, on closer inspection, bathrooms, toilets, the kitchen, and appliances are all quite new and very clean. The bedrooms downstairs, however, are rather musty. The kitchen is odd. There is a brand new industrial grade gas stove, but the burners don't seem to be calibrated correctly, no matter how low we set it, flames licked the sides of the pots. The sink also seems to be industrial. It's massive. Oddly, there is an eye-wash station right next to it; the kind of safety device you'd see in a chemistry lab. Despite and because all of the above, the house was perfectly suitable for our two families. Mom and daughter, stayed in one upstairs bedroom and father and son stayed in another. That family shared a bathroom attached to one of the rooms. The other family (mom, dad, daughter) stayed in the another upstairs bedroom and used the bathroom attached to it.

The house reminded me of fond childhood memories! I love being around water and this was perfect! The keiki enjoyed feeding the fish and they even provided fish food! I LOVED the fact that there is a private entrance to the water! We spent all day swimming, enjoying each other's company, and making new memories! Property manager was easy to get in touch with and very friendly. Would definitely stay here again!
