Shadow Mountain Ranch is a beautiful place to stay and my family & I love it. So beautiful, peaceful, and animals that roam all around the property. We can hardly wait to stay again. Thank you to the owner & staff, they are very friendly and helpful.

The Manzanita Cottage at Shadow Mountain Ranch was a great get-a-way and we enjoyed our stay.

Beautiful view of meadow and deer. The interior was cozy and perfect for us three, easily another adult could of been added. We've been traveling to Julian for twenty years to visit several family members. This is our new go to when there's no room at our families homes.

We initially rented the Manzanita property but there was a heating issue so the property manager offered to rent one of their other cottages. We chose the Enchanted Cottage. It served our purposes, though it was disappointing because it does not have a kitchen like the other property. I had to ask to adjust the price as the Enchanted Cottage is cheaper. However, we were pleased with it. There is a very comfortable king bed and plenty of hot water for bathing. The location is convenient to have some privacy from downtown Julian but still close enough to go to the shops there. When we walked into the property, it smelled like natural gas. The heat was on and the windows were open. I could not find a CO detector. I messaged the manager and she said the smell should go away, the heater had just been restarted after a week. She reassured me that the fire marshall had recently cleared the property. She did not mention anything about a detector. We let the place air out and the smell got a little better but lingered. On the second night of our stay, the smell suddenly got worse despite us not touching the thermostat. There is an electric heater available as well, so we would not have been too cold if we turned it off. Either we did not feel safe breathing the air, and cut our trip short. It was a shame because otherwise, we enjoyed the accommodations.

Will probably come back.

This is something we will do again. Great place to get away from everything and everyone. Beautiful scenery, and quiet.

We enjoy staying here for a short after Christmas vacation. This is a warm, comfortable, quiet retreat after a crisp invigorating day outdoors.

We have been coming to Shadow Mountain Ranch for decades. Always great to come back for a visit.

It was far bigger and better than we expected, very comfortable, we loved the dining room area with such a magnificent view, the cozy living room with the fire place was wonderful. Very clean, with everything you might need to have a great and relaxing time. We had a beautiful christmas eve and morning and enjoyed every minute of our stay, We will definetly be back and recommend!

Simple life, quiet Ana secluded location

We were planning on crafting in the Manzanita as part of the Art Retreat. We planned on preparing our own meals there. We were glad that the basics where available. for prep. Cutting boards and knives. It worked out well for us. Not big meals prepared. I do believe pots and pans there. Lots of plates, utensils and cups. Seemed to have a mosquito issue that had never been there before. Could not spend much time outdoors. Beautiful location for walks and sitting, but could not because we had not defense against them. We had a few people who had walking difficulties. They did fine around the cottage. Mobility was limited. There are areas that are concerning for even those with no issues had to be careful. We had a hail storm the first night that was enjoyable to watch from inside! The deer in the morning were a beautiful sight. Once sat done by the pond most of the afternoon one day. So quiet at night!

Property was exactly what we expected. Nothing fancy but certainly met all of our needs. Very close to Julian.

The cabin was wonderful - clean, comfortable, private. It had a real rustic country feel but totally modern and efficient on the inside. Being able to see deer graze along the property in the early morning was a real treat. I would definitely come back again.

Wonderful place to stay. Check in was very easy. Lots of space

This property seems like it was a very charming church retreat center once upon a time. Most of the property is aging without upkeep, but that is balanced with the reasonable rates for overnight stays. We saw dear and wild turkeys on the property, and love the location and peace of the space. We stayed off season when it was pretty warm, but still had lots to do in the area, being situated between Wynola and Julian. This was our second stay over the last few years and we enjoyed both occasions.

In its better days, this ranch was probably spectacular. Today, it is a bit run down and in need of maintenance. Our unit was comfortable but needed more kitchen ware- knives, bowels, kitchen towels. It needs a woman’s touch to make it much better. Overall we had a comfortable stay and a good experience seeing the Julian area

We loved our stay, we especially enjoyed the deer cruising by our cabin in the morning and evening!

I imagine the ranch must have been very quaint 25 years ago, it would be a dream project for a young couple/ family with lots of energy and money to renovate the units and landscape. Very serene.

Overall the property was comfortable, although not exactly as pictured in the online ad. We would have liked an area close by that we could walk. We would have spent more time outside had there been a place to do so. There were ants. There should have been information on type of coffee pot so we would have known we could bring our coffee pods. The screen filter for coffee was difficult to clean out between cups. Paper filters would have been most helpful!

We and our traveling companions prefer to relax and prepare simple meals on site. The unit had nice large refrigerator and stove. However, was lacking a couple of basics that most would expect to be present such as a few more cooking pans, utensils, enough silverware, and basic salt and pepper.

It's rustic! But that's exactly what we wanted and needed.

If you are city folk like me and need to go out and get a dose of nature this is the perfect place !! Me and the rest of my group loved the cottage it was perfect and had all the nature we needed and a close drive to town. I definitely recommend it was beautiful!
