Food excellent. Room comfy. Friendly staff

Fabulous, cosy Hotel. Clean, comfortable and dog friendly. The staff here are so friendly, helpful and genuinely can't do enough for you. Had the best nights sleep-the bed was so very comfortable. The breakfast and the food in the bar is delicious, plentyful, well presented and a great choice of menu. Our only criticism is there are no outdoor bins to dispose of used doggy bags. We will definately be going back though.

Very rowdy bar. At midnight had a drunk person banging on doors for ages in the hotel.

Great stay. Good location to walk the Old Man of Coniston and visit the Ruskin Museum and village. Parking on site. Lots of choice for breakfast options. Breakfast is available for a short window. Excellent choice of ales on the bar and friendly staff. Would stay again.

The Sun is a fine hotel. Our room was comfortable if a bit small. The bonus was windows on two sides which meant more light and ventilation. The breakfast was good, but not outstanding. Overall the is a fine value for the price and I would use them again.

Charming hotel, with a lot of history, with its links to Donald Campbell and Bluebird. Room was cosy and comfy, and staff were so lovely. Really amazing location, with geat views and a fantastic beer terrace. Food was excellent. Could not fault it. Will definitely be staying again.

It is a local hotel with pub atmosphere and clearly popular in the village. However our stay was good.

Very welcoming staff, friendly, polite, helpful, couldn’t be nicer & the food was great! Bar, was well stocked, comfortable with the outside areas looking very welcoming, great for a summer stay. The room was nicely decorated, but a small double means a small double, the bed felt tiny. If you are booking in get a larger room.

Stayed at the Sun solo for a couple of nights. Great location in terms of access to the mountains and close to shops/pubs. Very welcoming staff, clean and comfortable bedroom with great views. Breakfast was strong - plenty of options, full english was delicious. Pub within the hotel was great - roaring open fire to heat up after being out on the mountains, loads of local ales. historic hotel, always feel relaxed when i stay here. The staff are warm, friendly and always prepared to give you their time. the lounge is just so relaxing!

The hotel has leaks in various places mainly over the bar. Bedroom was uncomfortably cold.

Very pleasant hotel in a great location with a great atmospheric bar and very helpful staff

Very pleasant. The bar was well stocked. The staff were all very amicable. The only downside was that there w was no wifi in our room.

We took our 13 year old dog with us and were unsure how he would cope with the stairs as we were on the second floor. As it turned out he was fine and I have to say, the staff were so welcoming and friendly, it was a pleasure to stay at the Sun and would definitely go back in the future. Everything was clean and tidy with a good level of accessories in the room.

This hotel needs a complete facelift, the decor is very shabby, needs to be redecorated throughout. lots of noise from the plumbing/heating systems.

Superb area, very quiet and relaxing atmosphere

This is the second occasion we have stayed at The Sun, we love it! It is aging and a little rough around the edges, but it’s character runs deep, it’s atmosphere is just lovely and homely. If you like your hotels with character and charm, this is the place for you, if you are after standard, or uniform, or sterile, this is not your place. Really convenient and delicious breakfast, will be staying again for sure!

We really enjoyed our stay here and the staff were so friendly! I would definitely come back and recommend to friends. The rooms and hallways could do with being painted and I would have liked for the bedroom doors to have something in addition to the latch lock, perhaps a door chain.

It was a comfortable place. On arrival it took a while to check in due staff busy serving pub customers. Our room (6) was right at top and it takes a bit to negotiate the stairs with luggage and poor knees!! But as the one and only staff pointed out that the view is excellent. Couldn’t fault the breakfast or the service. Hotel is not too keen you eating your own food outside in the garden!! Be warned!! Shower good but the toilet filling tank was faulty and I was woken up by the noise of continuous water flaw, I did find temporary solution and hotel said they know about it and are dealing with it. It is steep walk up from the little shopping ares so be aware!!

Excellent stay and hospitality

We stayed he a couple of years ago and it was a totally different experience, this time although the staff were friendly and helpful, the room was very disappointing! The shower was very difficult to use and the toilet wouldn’t always flush properly but the most disappointing thing was the actual cleanliness of the room, it obviously hadn’t been cleaned properly for some time, cobwebs everywhere and the blinds were thick with dust!

Basic but characterful hotel, room very warm in winter with good views. A little old-fashioned but in many respects charmingly so. Excellent breakfast in the more modern conservatory extension. A lot of steps although that was a trade-off with the views from the room. Good at the price since much in Coniston is quite expensive. Shame the restaurant wasn't operational in the evening on this visit, but as the staff pointed out, it's only a short walk to Coniston's centre where there is plenty of choice. Reasonable amount of parking on site.

fixtures & fittings a bit dated and worn plus a lick of fresh paint would be good but overall a good clean, comfortable place to stay in an excellent location Staff hospitable and very friendly very good breakfast

Nice bar

We were lucky to get a booking here at late notice. The staff were very helpful and welcoming, and really knowledgeable about the area for local walks, dining etc. There is a quiet little pub attached to the hotel serving great beers. Breakfast was excellent, currently they are not serving other meals due to staff shortages but there are plenty of other places to eat in a short walking distance. There may be other places which are more ‘fancy’ - and more expensive - but for us it was perfect. So many small businesses like these have struggled post-COVID, the Sun Hotel has done a great job and we would recommend it to anyone.

Lovely pub and rooms which are very comfortable and clean. Excellent ales, really well kept. Great staff and owners. Best place in the area.

Where do we start? We checked in and then left about 4pm to go and surprise our friends camping by the lake. The keys are large and bulky so left them with reception. We came back at 10.45 but all was in darkness ( it's a pub as well) . We pushed the front door and it opened and went inside the pub but part of it was sectioned off via a couple doors that were all locjed. That was great as our keys were on the other side of the locked doors! We pressed the button in reception but no one came we then called the telephone number on the website and we could hear it ringing but no reply. So there we are in a hotel with nobody available and we had no keys to our room. This was now around 11.15pm we realised we could access the lounge area so we left down on the two settees and tried to get to sleep. That's how we spent the night in a hotel charging £100 for the privilege. The owner turned up at around 7.30am and we immediately asked for our room key and explained the situation. He asked how we got into the pub without the front door key - we explained the front door was open. This is dangerous as anyone could have got in and broken into any of the bedrooms and some where occupied, it also meant anything could have been stolen. The manager then suggested we should have gone to his house which was around 40m away- how did we know where he lived we had only been there for one night. No apology and certainly no goodwill. It's the first time we have slept on a sofa 50ft from our room!
