Mediocre hotel pretending to be a monastery
Well, as we knew very well, Sakishoin is not a typical hotel, it is a monastery playing hotel, or a hotel playing monastery, whichever you prefer. The room was large and contained a bathroom and toilet. Everything is clean, no complaints. The location is just great, very close to the old cemetery and mausoleum.
Well, the staff don't speak even minimal English, but they are friendly and try to help even if they can't. The food (breakfast and dinner) is terrible. I knew perfectly well that there were vegetarians in the monastery. But vegetarian food can and should be delicious. Especially if it costs like dinner at the best restaurant. But I'm sorry to say that the food was inedible. None of the guests liked it, not only us. Then they began to collect money for a strange ritual. You can offer anything, including rituals, prayers, and so on, but if you just go one by one to the guests during dinner and collect money, it sounds and looks bad. All in all, this inn is very expensive and definitely not worth the money spent.

Loved it!
Loved our stay at Sekishoin. The dinner and breakfast were so YUM and very filling. Location is perfect, within walking distance of everything. Very cool experience!

Very good
Very clean. Lovely experience. Very remote traditional vibe. The onsen was also good. Surprisingly comfortable sleep despite being on the floor (tatami I think?). Very spacious rooms and a cute little balcony where you can enjoy their zen gardens in the morning with a coffee.
Not the biggest fan of the traditional Buddhist meals.

Peaceful stay with wonderful food
We felt very fortunate to be able to stay at Sekishoin. The food was splendid and everyone we encountered was kind and welcoming. You, one of the monks, was especially helpful when I asked to honor my father during morning prayers. We wish we could had stayed longer.
Nothing. We had read reviews before we came and didn’t expect the Four Seasons. This is an active temple and we were pleased to have the opportunity to stay there.

Very pleasant, I lovedthe food and the tasty rice. My visiting gusts from the US were happy.
Great food. Friendly (staff), and when guests made mistakes they were patient.
Accurate comment in Japanese by an older monk about the impatience and youth of the guests during the morning service, but perhaps these comments could be made out of earshot.

View on the zen garden and cozy kotatsu, an absolute dream!
It was my first time doing a shukubo and it was absolutely wonderful. Our japanese-style room was exceptional: we had a cozy kotatsu, a private spacious bathroom with toilet and bathtub, a wonderful view and direct access to the zen garden and a more private area for the futon (super fluffy and comfortable). There were even nice samue and a warm cozy haori!! We had both dinner and breakfast included and it was the famous shojin ryouri, the buddhist vegetarian cuisine. It was the first time trying it and it was AMAZING! We could also assist to the morning prayer and take a nice bath in the sentou, the public bathtubs. Everything was absolutely amazing and the monks were extremely kind. I absolutely reccomand!
To me everything was exceptional, but it is important to keep in mind that the check-in, dinner, breakfast and prayer times, as well as the sentou opening and closing times are extremely fixed: once you missed those you won't be able to get your room or your dinner anymore. So it is important to carefully respect the temple's rules in order not to have any issue.
