Über diese Ferienunterkunft
A beautiful house in the Basque Country
Neues, freistehendes Haus im traditionellen baskischen Stil mit Blick auf das Dorf Etxalar, ein gut erhaltenes, malerisches, typisch baskisches Dorf. Eingebettet in 12.000 m2 Land.

We had a wonderful stay in this rural Basque house. It was clean, spacious and well equipt. Amazing views across to Etxalar. The garden was a little over grown. We enjoyed the short steep walk into town to the bars and shops. Access to the property by car was a little challenging and not for the nervious driver. We would throughly recommend this property.

Fantastic House
We loved our holiday and the house was amazing, in a fantastic location.
Beki and family were really, really helpful and we really hope to visit again in the future.

This self built house is absolutely stunning. We had a great stay for 6 nights in this big house on the hill and we were lucky with the weather too. There are many possible daytrips in the neighborhood (San Sebastian, Hendaye, Hondaribbia, St-Jean de luz, Pamplona , Passai de donibane) and Etxalar itself is a little beautiful town as well, so we could have stay longer than 6 nights but we had to move on to our next stop . The morning and evening view from the terrace is relaxing. Host Beki is a very nice person and was very helpful, she helped with diner reservation and we may use her parking badge for the busy coast town Hendaye. If you book this house, you won't regret it and will have beautiful memories for many years.

In a little known corner of the Bask country, perfectly located between San Sebastien and Biaritz. Wonderful house, gorgeous panorama, with its own source. The host, Beki was extremely helpful and had everything just like as it is promised on the web. Deep in the countryside a perfect place to relax and enjoy the mountains or the sea. Would highly recommend the house to anyone who likes to relax a bit out of the usual tourist places.

We have stayed in Etxalar for 1 week during our summer holidays
The house is wonderful. We very much enjoyed hiking visiting the beach and making city trips.

Spanish countryside at its best.
The only thing that could have been better was the weather, but in May it can be a challenge almost anywhere. However, we still managed to do some hiking, spent time in the wonderful town of Etxalar, enjoyed the local restaurant/bar/bakery, enjoyed the local people very much, as well as the farm / countryside life, taking in the wonderful drives to St.Jean de Luz in France, San Sebastian, etc.. It was a wonderful stay and Beki was a 'peach' and most helpful.

We had wonderful holidays in his nice house. We liked the big and cosy house, with everything in you need. The terrace, the water for playing and the surrounding were lovely! The balcony is so nice to play and to sit!
We also liked the bells ringing from the pony, coming up every day.
We liked walking down to the village on the path to get baguettes.
Beki was a really nice host who cared about us in a good way.
The house is in the mountains and you have to drive carefully sometimes-for us is wasnt a problem.
Thanks a lot for the great holidays in the mountains near the sea!!!!

Easy access to San Sebastián, Biarritz etc but tucked away in the heart of Basque with just fantastic views. BBQs and Spotify streaming are a must for our family. Just the job as no neighbours to worry about. To be fair Beki is a kind of neighbour and was always on hand to help. The drive to the property is an experience but you cant get views without going up a bit. The only niggle was with being 63 the 46 bed was cosy.Would definitely go back.

Lovely house in a beautiful setting
The house is beautiful, very comfortable and well-furnished with plenty of space and with lovely views of the surrounding hills and Etxalar down in the valley. We particularly enjoyed sitting on the balcony looking at the views, admiring the birds of prey circling overhead, soothed by the sound of bells and the scent of honeysuckle. We also had fun exploring the book collection - some quirky choices, others, like the guidebooks, very useful. The road to the house twists and turns and we definitely needed Beki to show us the way when we first arrived. We soon discovered that it was surprisingly quick to walk down to Etxalar to the local shop, the bar and the wonderful Basque restaurant. It is a great area for hikes from the door - including over the border into France and Beki helped us out with suggestions of places to visit. A fabulous base for exploring this part of the Pyrenees.

Great stay
Stayed here with my wife, 1 year old son and my parents. Great house and views with plenty of space and well equipped. Beki was a great host.
Beautiful part of the world and all so green, could have mistaken the scenery for Switzerland. We had day trips to Biarritz, St Jean De Luz, San Sebastian, Bilbao and Pampolma, all within 1.5 hours.

The house is very nice, clean and has a typical Basque style, but without being old-fashioned. We stayed a week with our 3 teenagers, who loved the house and area as well. Although they missed a bit a Wifi connection in the beginning, we did not even had time to sit inside. Beautifull walks and expedition can be initiated from this central place: cities, beach, mountains are all within a range of maximum 45 minutes! Beki helped us out in getting around and is a lovely and committed person. We definitely will advise this house to others as it is good value for money as well! Thanks for the great week in Spain - even with some cloudy days...

A house to be enjoyed in a beautiful setting
A distinctive chalet-style house which is quirkily and lovingly decorated (and filled with interesting books). The downstairs is open plan with a lovely large terrace so it's a lovely space to spend time in. The views over the valley and village are beautiful. The house was very clean and well equipped. Beki and family could not do enough for us and were available for tips/questions or just a chat. Accessible to French and Spanish towns and beaches which we enjoyed visiting. To be recommended.

Off the beaten path treasure
What a wonderful time we had in September of 2015 staying in this charming Basque village and delightful home! A GPS was most helpful in finding this quaint, out of the way little village of less than a thousand people. The house is handsome, comfortable, and very well furnished. It has an eclectic collection of books, board games and music and lots of comfortable seating. The upstairs balconies look out over hills with cows and sheep and other farm houses and are the perfect place to read, visit, or nap. Each morning we walked to the village bakery where we enjoyed an assortment of fresh breads and pastries and a chance to visit with the friendly owner. There is a small grocery store in the village where one is able to purchase fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, cheese and eggs, and other supplies. There is an old church in the village with a dekightful if slightly out of tune bell that rings throughout the day.
One day we packed a picnic lunch and hiked to France. Another day we drove to France and enjoyed the beach and a delicious crepe lunch. Because the house is so comfortable and charming, it was tempting to never leave, but there are many interesting things to do in the area, either on foot or by car.
Host Beki is a bright, warm, non-intrusive woman who lives in an apartment on the grounds. She was most helpful in suggesting outings and providing tips for interesting options in the area. We thoroughly enjoyed our 5 day stay and would love to return!

Wonderful house
Really nice house, very friendly owners and located at the border of the nice village of Extalar in a beautiful area with eagles etc. We stayed for 5 nights in July 2015 and it was very relaxing. Would love to keep this quiet place a secret, but that would be selfish. Highly recommended. Huib, the Netherlands

Extalar Paradise
We loved everything about this vacation - the location, the house, the town, the weather, the activities, and our host! Once you find the town of Extalar (a feat in itself), everything is as described and rated by others. Although you can drive right up to the house, we loved taking the 45 minute leisurely walk to and from the village of 829 (and counting) people. Four of us shared the accommodation for a full week. With open doors and windows (screens not needed except for the occasional fly or mosquito), we could hear the distant cow bells as well as the trickle of the mountain stream empty into the fountain in the yard. Many hikes are available in the area as well as day trips by car. We weren't as adventurous of some of the previous guests who hiked to France for lunch, but we did make a short car trip to Hendaye to shop at the local open-air market. Be prepared to switch from Spanish to French quickly, but most of the locals know enough English to be able to communicate. Days usually consisted of a leisurely breakfast followed by a hike or car trip, lunch out, and dinner at home where we could watch the changing landscape of the approaching evening. Our host, Beki who lives in the garage apt. on the property, was a delight. Never hovering, but always available with tips, suggestions, maps, and answers to our many questions. We weren't ready to leave and are now counting the days until we can return.

Perfect Adventure
My wife and I just returned from spending two weeks in the Basque Country with another couple, the last week based in this lovely house. The house is located on one of the high hills surrounding Extalar and, so has beautiful views of the village below and its’ surrounding landscapes. The views are ever and continually changing as the sun travels through its’ arc. Clouds pass by, morning fog fills the valley, hiding the village below then clears, revealing the sun warmed tile roofs below. We often had rainbows.
The road takes you to the village in just a few minutes where, in the morning there is a great bakery for croissants, breads and other delectables. And the baker and his family are a delight to talk to. There is a small grocery and several places for a coffee and light snack. There is a walking trail to the town as well which doesn’t take much more time than a drive.
We hiked a number of beautiful trails around the hills surrounding the village as well as those we drove a bit to get to. Hendaye and St. Jean de Luz in France as well as San Sebastian and Hondarribia in Spain, all with great markets, are 30-40 minutes away.
The house is beautiful, interesting and comfortable. Everything was very clean and in top working order. Beki was always easily available and very helpful in planning trips, hikes, markets, etc.. We enjoyed pulling chairs out on the patio and just soaking up the sun and breeze while taking in the amazing vistas. Slept like so many babies. Would love to go again.

Beautiful views
Spent a week at the house and the house felt like part of the holiday experience not just somewhere to stay. Lovely views from the terraces, amazing to wake up to in the morning. Inside of house well kept with lots of space and has all you would need. Kitchen well equipped. Boys loved the outside shower and had it checked out in less than 5 minutes of arriving! Handy walk into the town which was good and within easy reach of supermarkets in Hendaye etc. Useful tips from Beki on where to go, places we wouldn't have found on our own. Loved San Sebastián and got the train there from Hendaye which was much better than driving in. Great base for exploring this gorgeous region and Beki was great to have on hand for any questions and for tips. Would definitely recommend this house.

Indeed a beautiful house in the basque region
The location of the house was outstanding, in a way remote but still within easy walking distance to the next little town which was very pretty and and absolute pleasure to walk to. The house itself was beautiful, build in the local style and been only about 10 years old in a good condition. The kitchen was well equipped and cooking a meal was easy, seating area with plenty of plates, cutlery and glasses was provided. Washrooms where clean and in a very good working condition. The bedrooms where also very nicely designed with lots of windows and a very nice rustic charm to it, unfortunately we all (family of 4) found the beds rather uncomfortable as they where rather soft and springy. We also did found that the blankets, pillows and towels provided where all of a rather musty smell which made sleeping a bit less enjoyable, maybe it was due to the recent moist weather in the region. Yes, it was a beautiful house in an amazing location and I can absolutly recommend staying in this nice house, but I do would like to offer a few suggestions to make a stay more enjoyable. It did felt that the upkeep of the house has been neglected a bit as the landscaping was heavily overgrown and in terms of lounging or just hanging out in the house the seating possibilities where rather limited as the living room had no couch/sofa and the outside area had also no seating or dining area.

A magical place
I'm not sure how to describe this house and this part of the world...it was simply magical. We spent 2 weeks this summer - alternating between Spain and France whether on foot or a short ride by car. And every afternoon, we'd return to our farmhouse and breathe easy. Many days, we'd simply walk down to the village (7 min walk past sheep and horses), see how many kids were playing in the river, buy a baguette, some sheep cheese, a bottle of nice rosado, and return to sit on a balcony, on the patio, or in the kitchen area. Beki, Kyra and their father (who built the house) have done a wonderful job of having everything there you might need yet having it all be authentically Basque - which the family is. Things to do - hike to France, enjoy the outdoor shower (in addition to indoors of course), shop produce markets in France, see the Guggenheim in Bilbao or the Navarra Museum in Pamplona, buy Lorpen socks in Etxalar, taste peppers in Espelette and Irougeluy wine in France, hike up to the cima of Askua for the vista from the Pyrenees to the Cote Basque, see the witches/smugglers caves, try to learn Euskara, visit petit Bayonne, San Sebastian, Hondarribia (take the boat from Hendaye), and the list goes on and on.
The house is very comfortable. The library is fascinating. There is no wifi but it is available in the village - we found we preferred to be without. Comfortable beds, hot showers with great water pressure, fully equipped kitchen (we cooked almost every night and had all breakfasts chez nous), maps and ideas for exploring, washing machine and dishwasher. There was nothing else that we needed.
We would have stayed a month; there was so much more to see, to do, and to simply savor.
Concerning the VRBO review tips/guidelines - listing was absolutely accurate, photos too. Property impeccable, owner very helpful including allowing us to follow her to our first local market in St Jean de Luz. Would I recommend this spot to family and friends - unequivocally.

Lovely house in the Basque Region
We just spent three lovely days at this beautiful house in the Basque region. Nestled on top of this hill, overlooking the picturesque village of Etxalar. This house was ideally situated for enjoying the village, or hiking in the mountains or driving to nearby French and Spanish villages. We could go on beautiful hikes directly out the front door through rolling hills, passing by sheep, cows and wild horses. We drove into the beautiful village of St. Jean de Luz to buy extraordinary cheese and pastries. We ate at this Michelin three star rated restaurant only 30 minutes away. You can walk into the village from the house and have a glass of wine at the local bar. But don't expect to speak English, because the signs and the people speak Basque.
The house is a beautiful two story house full of art and objects collected from all over. I came across a book of jokes from 1897, signed by the previous owner in 1897. There is a beautiful garden out the kitchen door full of flowers and herbs. The sun streams in through the doors and windows. You can hear the spring fountain, the sheep and cow bells, and the sounds of the village bells ringing. You can sit on the porch and soak in the sun and watch the sheep roam the hilly countryside. It is a very beautiful place.
I would recommend that you rent a small car, because the roads are very narrow as you approach the house, often leaving room for only one direction. Getting to the house involves a lot of twists and turns but Beki, the owner's sister, is very helpful in taking you to the house and providing helpful suggestions of where to visit and day trips.
I would unreservedly recommend this house for a get away. You can experience the peace of the Basque region and culture and also the nearby villages. The city of San Sebastian is a short 30 minute drive away. The only disappointing thing was not having more time to experience the lifestyle here and the villages nearby. I think the thing I will remember and hold dear the most is the sheep, donkeys, cows and wild horses we would come upon on our walks in the hillside.

Have just returned from 5 weeks travelling in Spain. During my stay I rented 6 different homes/villas/apartments for various times. Without doubt our time in Etxalar was our favourite accommodation for a ream of reasons.
First off the location of this glorious home in the mountains overlooking the village of Etxalar. The House is beautiful, a piece of art to live in. It was clean, spacious, countless nooks and patios to sit and breath it all in and the decoration of the home......just lovely with origional art and bright clean colous.
Secondly, Beki, our host. Thanks so very much Beki for making our stay such a wonderful experience. Your enthuasim for the country, the nearby village, the people and culture of Spain, and your daily interaction with us truly contributed tremendously to our stay...not just in Etxalar but also in our perspective of Spain in general.
I would highly recommend this property for anybody travelling to Spain who wants a taste of the wonderful Basque country.....a haven for sleeping and enjoying wonderful meals at the end of a long day of wandering or simply to come, unpack and enjoy the wonderful vistas, quiet and beauty of this place in the mountains outside the village.

Basque Country town
If you are looking for a "get away from it all" location, this is for you. The town of Extalar is only 30 minutes from the western Spainish coastline to towns such as San Sebastian on good quality highways. If the travelling doesn't bother you and you want to have access to the more touristy spots while staying in a very non-touristy area, then this town is for you. Our host, Becky was delightful and very informative. This part of the Basque country consists of beautiful hillsides, lovely walks in nearby national parks (everything is a windy road drive to get to which seems normal for this part of the world). Restaurant selection is minimal in the town and the surrounding towns, however, again, if you are willing to do the drive there are nice restaurants 30-60 minutes away. Ensure you telephone to check if restaurants are open as we were disappointed on 2 or 3 occasions where we arrived to closed restaurants. Suggested day trip is the Cog Railway in France in the town of Sare. Other activities in the region which were worth a visit included a visit to historic timber boat museum (great tour, very personalised) and the cider museum. If you want a busy hub then go elsewhere, if you want peace and quiet with lovely views and self-catering opportunities, then definitely this is a good location. The house itself is just as advertised and the photos were accurate. A bit chilly for those of us not used to European cooler climates so bring an extra jacket if you are from the southern hemisphere! Thanks again Becky, it was lovely having the opportunity to meet with you and gain some local insights.

We Loved This Place!
My husband and I and our daughter and son-in-law just returned from a few lovely days staying at this wonderful place. It is even better than advertised. The views were georgeous, the amenities of the house excellent, and we could have spent a couple months there! Our landlords were helpful ahead of time and during our stay. The house is up a winding lane which you definitely have to be lead to the first time (as one earlier reviewer had said, it's not on the GPS!), but that's part of the point. You're absolutely out in the mountainous countryside yet able to view tiny Extalar below you in the valley. The town has the basics (restaurant, bar, store), but the area, although remote, is actually quite close to French towns and others around. We enjoyed not only the house and relaxing on the large porch and terraces, but also cooking there with wonderful produce procured at a village market on the French side as suggested by our hostess. It made a good base from which to explore Biarritz, and San Sebastian, and Bilbao, but also to follow the smaller roads among the Basque villages of which Extalar is one. Mist on the mountains in the morning! If one were a hiker, I imagine the area would be heaven. We are so glad we chose this house, and others who do will not be disappointed. Our stay here was the highlight of our Spain trip, where we also spent several days in Barcelona and Madrid. Basque history is fascinating, and staying here helped us to learn more about it.

Beauty in Basque Country
Imagine waking up in a beautiful house to the view from your balcony in the photo above. This house provides the best of both worlds: a modern, well-appointed house surrounded by unspoiled, verdant hills and farmland, with more sheep than people. At night, you overlook the twinkling lights of the village of picturesque Etxalar.
Etxalar, a charming village, is hardly a metropolis, but it is close to so many places you'll want to visit: we took day trips to Bilbao, San Sebastian, Biarritz and the French Basque Country, Hondaribbia, and explored the whole northern coast.
We often made lunch the big meal of the day and then came back to the house and feasted on cheese, bread, and the wonderful produce so easily available at dinnertime. We wanted not only to explore the area, but take advantage of the beautiful house, built and maintained with so much pride by the Beguiristain family. Beki, our host, was more than willing to help with directions, sightseeing suggestions, and restaurant ideas.
All three of us loved our stay in Etxalar.

We enjoyed 5 wonderful days in Basque Contry. The house is gorgeous, with rustic furniture and decorations, truthful to the pictures on the website. Very clean and quiet. The view from the balcony is absolutely fabulous.
Our host Beki was very kind and helpful, offering a lot of information regarding the area.
The road to the house (which cannot be found with the GPS!) is very narrow, through the woods, but this was part of the fun.
The village is very picturesque and the restaurant at the Venta hotel very good and cheap.
You can take "Le Petit Train de La Rhune" ,(one of the 3 cogwheel trains in France) and enjoy a splendid panoramic view of the Pyrenees and the Basque Country.
Jean de Luz, San Sebastian and Hondaribia are the gems of the area.
Our vacation ended too soon, but who knows, maybe one day we'll return. Meanwhile we recommended this place to all our friends.

Great walks, friendly villagers and a wonderful restaurant in town, this was a wonderful experience for my family. We hope to return one day!
