Close But Far....

If you are looking to get away and off the beaten path, a bit, you will be hard pressed to find a better spot so close to the bay and 2 steps while staying among mango orchards. Great atmosphere and great host.

Kai (Charles) was an extremely friendly and accommodating host. Very knowledgeable of the area. Was cool staying near all the mango trees! Thanks Kai!

Great little cottage for a Big Island stay. Very comfortable bed, wonderful open-air veranda. Kitchen is a little bit long in the tooth, but well equipped. Would stay there again on future trips.

This little cabin is just perfect. We’re re-booking immediately. Shhhh, or everyone will know…

This small cottage had a great screen porch and a view of the ocean in the distance. It was very convenient to City of Refuge and Painted Church. It was not fancy but charming and nice in an old school way. Cozy and good for a couple.

Overall a bit conflicted about our stay. Absolutely loved the area, the beauty, tranquility and setting. The place is definitely cool with unlimited potential. The interior needs a bit of tightening up. A few things need to be replaced or worked on, screws tightened, kitchen floorboards replaced, sealant applied, etc…. I think it would’ve been helpful to get a better idea beforehand of a few things. I would have liked to know what was jumping on the roof and scratching around outside. Made it a bit difficult to sleep initially. The host is super nice and accommodating. Absolutely stunning setting!

This property is in a gorgeous location, with incredible sunset views. Tucked away in a very peaceful and safe location of Captain Cook… close but far indeed. Kai is a phenomenal host and a great human and we look forward to the next time we come to the Big Island and can Cool Da Heels.

We LOVE this cabin--it's privacy, cleanliness, location. Can't wait to return!

This was our second time staying at Cool Da Heels and was just as lovely as our previous stay. Immaculate, cozy, tastefully decorated and peaceful, it provided an ideal home base location to explore the southern part of Hawaii Island as well as Volcanoes National Park. It's only 30 minutes to the restaurants and shops of Kona and the beautiful southern beaches of the Kohala coast. While the bathroom is remodeled with an open shower, the kitchen is a bit dated, but fully functional and well appointed. There's no AC but the trade winds and a ceiling fan are sufficient. The owner is responsive yet unobtrusive and checkin/checkout was a breeze.
I wouldn't hesitate to stay again.

For those wanting a more authentic, calm & beautiful place to base your big island stay, this cottage is highly recommended. Good location- like the title says, “close but far”- close enough to Kona for dining/shopping, etc, but feels far away from the crowds. Very quiet & private. Loved waking to birds singing & frolicking in the fountain. Sunsets from the screened lanai were amazing .
We had everything we needed for a 10 night stay. Wonderful host, too!

The property was wonderful - view of the ocean and the sunsets, bird bath with tons of birds taking advantage, and everything we needed to be comfortable. Host was easy to reach and ready to help. We spent most of our time on the lanai. Great way to visit the Big Island!

Everything about this place was great! Far enough away from the city but close enough if you need anything. Very quiet all day long and Kai was great. He came down, introduced himself and gave us a farm tour! The Mangoes were the best I've ever eaten. Will definitely stay again when we visit Kona. Thank you Kai!

Perfect house close enough to enjoy the city but far enough away to enjoy nature.
This was the perfect getaway spot for my husband and me! You can hear the waves crashing in the bay which made sleeping amazing. You can drive 5 minutes down the road to snorkel or relax at the bay or take a quick 20 min drive into Kona. The host is superb! He took time out of his day to come down and personally greet us (even in the pouring rain) and make sure we had everything we needed. If you are looking for something away from the hustle and bustle but close enough to enjoy THIS is the place!

Hawaiian Paradise!
This is THE place to stay if you're coming to the Island to immerse yourself in the Paradise that is Hawaii! Idyllic setting with fragrant orchids, exceptional mangoes, fresh tangelos and bananas, delicate birdsong to serenade you the day through, the sound of surf in Kealakekua Bay, the brilliant stars in the unpolluted night sky, and sunsets that you'll remember for years.
A well-equipped, beautifully constructed cottage with everything you'll need to prepare food at-home, or to store your goodies from some of the great eateries close by.
One of the most comfortable beds we've slept in, along with luxurious easy chairs and sofa, all surrounded by a well-curated and eclectic Polynesian decor. Just beautiful!
Sooo many good places to eat! Stop at ChoiceMart for local and nation (world!) wide products. Da Bomb Grindz will Wow! your tastebuds. Try out Big Jake's BBQ (best I've ever had - really), The Coffee Shack, Shaka Tacos, farm stands all through Napoopoo, Painted Church, Middle Keei, Mamalahoa Hwy.
Close by is Two-Step and Manini Beach for some of the best snorkeling on the Island. Watch the surfers at Ke'ei Beach from your lanai. Walk the 1871 Trail at Honaunau National Historic Park. All within a 10 minute drive.
Such a great location!
Kaimalu is a responsive, gracious, welcoming host to his small farm.
Let the cool island breezes lull you to sleep at night and wake you to your new day in this Eden.

Tranquil Stay
We had a wonderful experience at this property. The host is very gracious and helpful. The cottage is comfortable and situated on a tranquil rural property. Excellent atmosphere.

Loved the artistry and layout of this little cabin. It was a great place to spend the day hanging out taking a walk and reading or as a place to head out for a driving adventure to other locations - for snorkeling, hiking (volcanoes), and such. The two of us loved our time here and look forward to returning some day. Thank-you to the host!

Perfect getaway
This little cottage on the hillside was only minutes from a few beaches but was also very secluded and quiet. You hear nothing but the sounds of nature 24/7. They mean it when they say it's close...but far. They made sure the property had drawers and cabinets filled with everything you'll need during your stay. They also have plenty of extra beach gear and extra fans for those nights that are just a little too humid. 5 stars!!

This is my second stay at This lovely property. I recommend this for those who enjoy nature, a simple lifestyle and The Spirit of Aloha. Mahalo to Charles, Kai and family.

Wonderful property in a great location
Cool Da Heels is an accurate description. Located in coffee country away from the hustle and bustle of Kailua Kona, it’s still close enough for dinner in town. The unit is just up the road from beautiful and peaceful Manini beach park on historic Kealakekua bay and just 10 minutes away from Pu’uhonoa O Honaunau (place of refuge) and excellent snorkeling at “Two Step” next door.
We found the unit itself to be comfortable, immaculately clean, and insect free. The shower and bathroom were great and the bed and linens provided a great night’s sleep. While the living area is cozy, most of our time was spent on the screened-in lanai overlooking the grounds, the water fountain, and the ocean in the distance. There’s plenty of beach gear provided, and there’s a washer outside the unit and clothesline for drying. The kitchen is a bit dated but well-appointed and functional. There’s also a charcoal grill.
The unit is remarkably quiet and peaceful. Except for an occasional car on the road we rarely heard or saw another person. The checkin/checkout was smooth and easy. We met the owner as we were leaving and he couldn’t have been nicer. We very much enjoyed our stay, wished we had stayed longer, and hope to return on our next visit to the Big Island. Highly recommended!

Rustic Tropical Elegant Paradise
This little house was a perfect place to unwind and experience Hawai'i for the first time. Beautiful views out of every window, surrounded by birds, flowers, and an abundance of tropical greenery. Great location away from the busy tourist areas and very close to best snorkeling on the island.
Highly recommended for the traveler seeking a more authentic and relaxing experience.

Wonderful Place to Stay and to Get Out
Although the cottage is a little worn, it was very comfortable. We especially enjoyed the large yard with so many fruit trees and blossoming plants and a fountain that attracted a wide variety of birds. The cottage is within a few miles of some of our favorite attractions - especially the amazing snorkeling and heritage park on Kealakekua Bay, the Painted Church, the Peace Garden and so much more!

Charming Stay
This was a very pleasant and charming stay at the guesthouse. We had a little confusion in the check-in process, as we could not communicate with Charles, and were not expecting the duck, Donald. But it all cleared up and we even miss Donald. We enjoyed the big spacious bed and getting up each morning to the sun, ocean views and beautiful breezes. Also eating out on the Lanai and sitting out there for an afternoon coffee while watching the birds and feeling the peace of the area, was such a treat. Thank you!

Checked all the boxes
We were excited to return to Hawaii and we wanted a welcoming, safe, and beautiful space to stay. We were not disappointed. The property is lovely and the house is set up nicely with very usable and comfortable spaces. The landscaping is gorgeous and birds flock to the various water features. Great location near the water and excellent snorkeling spots.

Thank you for sharing your paradise
The owner has put heart and soul into this property, an orchard, orchids and bird life that love their bath creates a slice of Hawaii that we love.
The small house with a screened lanai that faces the ocean was a great place to hang out, dry out our gear and experience a thunder, lightning and rain storm.

Sunsets and snorkeling
My wife and I had a great time staying here for our first visit to the Big Island. There are some nicer beaches on the north side of Kona which are a bit of a drive from here, but the quiet solitude of this location was awesome. Watching birds in the water feature and the sunsets was a serene end of each day. Close by is Two Steps which has great snorkeling.

So relaxing
This place is gorgeous and quiet, except for all the birds enjoying their baths right in right of the screened lanai! Charles has carefully decorated the home with humorous and beautiful art. Communication was easy and fast through app messaging. Donald the duck was constantly about and friendly; the hissing sound he makes is how he quacks we think! We’d definitely stay again.

Excellent getaway
We traveled around the big island and this was the best place we stayed. It's in a great location. We went kayaking with dolphins half a mile down the street. Also the hut is adorable and the orchid garden is incredible. We should've stayed longer!

Peaceful and surrounded by beauty.
This property was perfect for our honeymoon! Quiet and tucked into tropical lush gardens. Awakened by the birds at sunrise, and quiet all night. House, bed, kitchen work well, and the front screened porch overlooking bird fountain delighted all day. Sunsets over Pacific! Easy access to snorkeling and to grocery store. Highly recommended.
