If you are looking for a cabin in the North Carolina mountains, this is your place. It’s close to the downtown area and on a private lake. It has everything you need for a relaxing retreat. We arrived at peak leaf changing season and checked in with no problems. A special treat was the twinkle lights around the porch. Poo poori was a nice touch in the bathrooms; fireplace was awesome for us Floridians. The kitchen was well stocked with dishes, pots and pans and even spices. It has a very nice walkway down to the dock of the lake. My husband counted 50 steps. The beds were comfortable and one bathroom had a jacuzzi tub. We enjoyed sitting out on the covered porch overlooking the lake. The location was awesome.

This is a perfect house in a perfect location. The owner has provided everything you could need, from area guide books and walking sticks, to cuddly furniture and a big-screen TV with cable for chilly nights, to bottled herbs for cooking. We had a hard time getting ourselves off the beautiful deck after coffee in the morning - the hummingbirds provided a great show at the feeders, and view of the woods down to the lake was lovely. The photos don't do it justice.

Our family (including dog) thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this property. Mary Ann is a fantastic host, and was super responsive to the one minor issue that occurred when we were there. The pictures don't do the home justice, as it is actually more spacious than it appears. We stayed for 5 full weeks and the use of the lake for fishing and kayaking was an added bonus for our teenage daughters. Look forward to staying again sometime!

Lovely house. Excellent location close to Highway 64. This was appreciated as many Highland rentals can be remote. We enjoyed having our dog with us. The deck was great to hang out on and had a gate so we didn't have to worry about our dog wandering off. There is a quiet road next to the property and we were able to walk our dog on a one mile loop on days when we did not take her with us. The house was fully stocked with everything we needed. The owner was accessible when we had questions. We would definitely stay here again.

We are repeat guests at this home. We love the layout of the home, location, covered back porch, fireplace and lake view. It was cold while we were there and enjoyed having a fire going in the fireplace. The owner is very communicative and this has become our go to spot in Highlands. It stays pretty booked, plan ahead to reserve your dates.

It is amazing property close to the city center , very clean , well equipped, great communication with the owner , amazing from all prospective. Will highly recommend!

Location was excellent! Cabin was exactly as described and has everything you need. Host was wonderful to work with and very accommodating. We had a hiccup with checking in but Mary Ann was fast to respond and find a resolution. The property has a lot of space for kids to explore, including the dock and beautiful view of the water. Our family of four and dog had the best time and we would come back to the cabin again. Thank you for a wonderful stay!!

The house was nice and clean, and the porch and lake are lovely. Only things that might cause problems: the steps to the loft are steep, an older person might have trouble, and the driveway is also steep but we got in and out fine. The owners were very responsive when we called.

We stayed here for a wedding in the Highlands. The kitchen was great, I found all the cooking utensils and containers I needed for every meal. The porch enclosure was great for pets and the pond was very pretty in the fall. If you stay for several days or have a lot of people, you may want to consider taking your trash, recyclables throughout your stay versus waiting till the end. It is really close and not a big deal, just didn’t think about taking it throughout. Overall, we had a great time and would definitely stay again!

This was our third stay at this property this year. We love the location, airy bright house and fabulous deck. The kitchen is well-equipped and the house is very clean. Perfect for a relaxing few days. The location is close to town and the setting on the lake is very peaceful. Will look forward to returning! The host, Mary Ann, is easy to communicate with and responds quickly. Highly recommend this property.

This property was one of the best we have ever rented! It was beautiful and very well stocked with everything we could want - the kitchen was amazing, the dock and lake were wonderful, and the porch was delightful. I only wish we had booked it for longer!

My wife and I plus two small dogs just returned from a weeks stay at Mary Ann’s Highlands home. It was a great stay. We found the home to be very nice, a well stocked kitchen, comfy accommodations and cool mountain air. The location in Highlands provides for easy access to all the area has to offer. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a high country getaway.

Pros: Location - Driving within 10 minutes to downtown, hikes and waterfalls Responsiveness - Had hiccup with check in process and also a minor rodent problem. Owner communicated right away with me and also gave me a slight refund for my troubles. Kitchen - has every cooking item you need and two sinks! Cons: Walkability - for my family, we like to walk around without getting in the car, the road in front of the house was slightly too busy to do that with a stroller. Cleanliness/Property - Minor rodent issue, master shower pools while you are taking a shower, some lights work infrequently, my husband had to clean off the grill

This was our first stay at this property and it was even better than the photos. Quiet location on a small private lake, close to town and the house was so clean and comfortable. The large porch off the dining room has a beautiful wooden table and additional chairs that aren’t in the photo. The house has a smart TV and the wifi connection was good. We had a great getaway and have booked two more visits there. Mary Ann was incredibly communicative with a small check in glitch that occurred. We loved it!

We were extremely pleased with this lovely spacious lakefront cabin that was both close to town as well as mountain trails and falls. The owner was very welcoming and accommodating, and the cabin was plenty big for our party of eight. With all amenities, this certainly felt like a home away from home.

We had a lovely vacation at Highland Hills. Lots of room, would be perfect for large family. Large fireplace in living room that makes for a cozy experience. Loved how close we were to town but still felt secluded. It was cold and snowy/rainy most of our trip so we didn’t get to enjoy the awesome deck or the kayaks in the lake. Highly recommend and would stay again!

We have visited the Highlands on day trips from Lake Junaluska, but never stayed overnight before. This cabin was perfectly situated, giving us a short drive to town and our outings to all of the sites and shopping in town. Even though we stayed before Christmas, we enjoyed the dock on the beautiful lake. (We even looked at the stars on a couple of nights.) The cabin itself was perfect for us. Before confirming our booking, Mary Ann wanted to make sure we were aware of the open balcony on the second floor. ( It was fine for our family - very spacious and our family normally wakes us about the same time.) We had PLENTY of space with bedrooms, bathrooms, eating and "living space". The fireplace was perfect, too. Mary Ann has put everything about the property in very detailed instructions. (If you follow those, you will have the best stay!) The ONLY PROBLEM was we didn't plan a longer trip! This place is definitely a winner!

Our family of 4 enjoyed our stay at the cabin. The location to Main Street is a short drive. The lake is lovely and it’s a quiet area. We brought pizza back from Mountain Fresh Grocery after getting groceries at Bryson’s on our arrival night and cooked all other meals at the cabin. It was a most welcome change of scenery from our 4 walls at home since March. We especially enjoyed the Christmas lights and store windows at night. Thank you for allowing us to visit, Mary Ann!

Clear communication with owner for the ultra clean cabin with access to small lake and 5 min from Highlands by car. Little tough to negotiate tight, steep driveway but accessible. Owner provides emailed and printed property and local information. A wonderful stay!

We had a wonderful weekend in Highlands with our grandson at Marianne's house. Both floors of the house were spacious and well-decorated. The kitchen was equipped with everything we needed. Loved the cathedral ceiling in the living room, and my grandson was crazy about the loft. The lake view was what drew us to the house in the first place, and we loved taking out the John-boat for a cruise around the lake to Half-Mile Farm, where we have stayed before. There is even a swing on the lower level of the house. The porch and deck are wonderful, and there is even a swing on the lower level. Lots of lake equipment in the basement room that we were able to use. Marianne's husband came by while we were at the house, and was a very friendly and gracious host. We would love to rent the house again next summer. A few minor things to keep in mind: some (like our disabled daughter, the elderly, etc.) might not be able to easily navigate all the steps to the lake and back. The stairs to the loft are very steep, and not wide. Pulling in and out of the driveway is a little complicated. Last, it might not be the best house for 4 couples if people didn't want to share bathrooms. There is one bathroom downstairs that is connected to one bedroom, but not the other. But the house was just perfect for our little family group, and we hope to be back in 2021 with more family members! Great experience all the way around.

We really enjoyed our stay at this beautiful home. The kitchen was well equipped, the living room was spacious with lots of channels for the young adults and I especially enjoyed the outdoor deck on quite mornings. It was a short drive to downtown Highlands and nearby attractions, too. As the other reviewers mentioned, the lock box was a bit of a challenge, but we had help getting in. The upstairs loft is entirely open, so don't put late sleepers up there. Other than that, it was a great house!

This rental has everything you might need and we truly enjoyed our stay here. Ideal location 4 hikes and a quaint large, private pond for easy access down the steps! Will consider another stay in the Fall time!
