The Sunset Cabin at the Painted Hills Cottages was very well stocked and the beds were very comfortable. The deck was amazing for watching the incredible sunsets. We had a couple of maintenance issues that were not able to be taken care of but the owner graciously gave us a delicious quiche for our patience. One of the main obstacles was not having cell phone service. We enjoyed our stay very much and would recommend it to others.

Found a few spider webs and some places weren’t cleaned properly. We found lipstick on a few glasses but we didn’t mind washing it off ourselves. They equipped us with everything we needed and we forgot a few things but they had us covered! Super spacious super fun and we had such a blast! Definitely coming back! The home owner was also the sweetest person and checking on us multiple times!

The house matches the area—they’re both very vibrant! LOVE the beds and bedding. These are the most comfortable beds we’ve ever slept in at a rental!

Great place for large family with lots of kids
Cheerful house, full of character, very clean. It was well stocked with nice toiletries, a multitude of fluffy towels, and all the cooking supplies one could possibly want to cook for a large family. Ideal location to explore local parks. Tons to do.

We loved every part of it, is was so beautiful and really enjoyed the outdoor sitting area
This property is perfect for a family or a group of people getting together to relax and enjoy the nature. We enjoyed every part of it from meeting the owner Barbara, to just sitting and drinking coffee looking at the beauty that surrounded us.

Comfortable, roomy cabin near the breathtakingly beautiful painted hills
We had lots of comings and goings during our week-long stay, but at some points we had 6 people and 3 dogs who were all able to be happy and comfortable in this sweet cabin. The kitchen is fully stocked and the beds all good quality. Barbara was very helpful in suggesting good hikes in the area. We had a wonderful time and will definitely return!

Winter In Mitchell
Winter is a great time to visit Mitchell and the Painted Hills. We had a great time. Mitchell has good food and beer, and the Painted Hills are awesome and we largely had them to ourselves. The cottage was comfortable and ideal for our visit.

beautiful property in a magical place
We had a wonderful long weekend at the sunset cabin. The house was spacious and comfortable with lots of different areas both inside and out to hang out in. Even though it was in the upper 90s outside, the house stayed cool throughout the day even without running the A/C (though the presence of A/C was appreciated). We loved all the little artistic touches all around the property and enjoyed chatting with Barbara. She gave us excellent suggestions for things to see, places to swim and places to eat. We would love to come stay here again sometime in the near future.

A True Gem
The perfect getaway if your looking to relax and enjoy the beauty the Painted Hills and Jon Day Fossil beds. Barbara the owner was such a joy to meet. We got the pleasure of meeting her the second day we were there and the last day, although she is there everyday working the grounds but still provides a lot of privacy for her guests. She is an amazing woman who has done so much with her life and if your lucky you will get the chance to meet her. I suffer for from anxiety and get extremely homesick, but this place felt like home and I really didn’t want to leave! I miss it already! Everything was perfect from the layout of the house, cleanliness, and beautiful panoramic views. The town of Mitchell is a small western town and everyone one there is extremely personable. We will definitely be back!

Really enjoyed our stay at the Sunset Cottage. Nothing fancy but it was quiet, had a dash of the artistic and was a pleasant surprise in a small remote town.

Loved it
This property was fantastic. It was the perfect get away for our family Thanksgiving! The kitchen was stocked with everything we needed to cook a Thanksgiving dinner. The kids loved the bunks and the little details did not go unnoticed- a stuffed animal and book on each bed. They were thrilled! Thank you! Eastern Oregon is beautiful and this place was perfect.

Perfect spot for a getaway
My friends and I visited for a weekend and everyone enjoyed the cottage so much. We set up our game night downstairs and went out to Blue Basin for a quick hike. We cooked all our meals at the cottage as well. The kitchen was stalked with utensils plenty of plates and bowls, spices, microwave, toaster, teas and coffee. We were also pleasantly surprised about have extra blankets. It got chilly downstairs and everyone was able to have a cozy blanket while we were down there. Bathrooms were clean, shampoo, conditioner and soap were in all the bathrooms. Overall, very impressed with our stay and are looking forward to going back. Thank you!

Colorful Painted Hills Retreat
The property can sleep a large amount of people. We had just our family of four. Plenty of room. The location is very peaceful and the flowers everywhere very beautiful.
Twice we had deer just walk by the front window. We said hello and they stopped to have a look at us.
A great location for exploring the Painted Hills and all the other units of the John Day Fossil Beds.
Mitchell is a very small growing ghost town and the people are so friendly.
We had just a wonderful time.

Wonderful, peaceful
This bright house, cheerful house was remodeled recently: It is comfortable and pleasant: lots of outdoor space to sit and chat with guests (we were in a large group); you can enjoy the view down into the small town of Mitchell from the crows nest overlook. The rooms are pretty, the beds are comfortable. The house is clean and the furnishings are simple yet cheerful. Very enjoyable. The land ladies (a mother/daughter team) were helpful and made our stay a happy one.

Perfect Cottage Stay
The Sunset Cottage was a perfect home base for our three days in the John Day Fossil Monument area. The accommodations were bright, cheery, clean, whimsical... They fit our party of 3 adults and 2 kids just right. We were also grateful for the dozen fresh eggs and some pantry items that saved the day when we discovered how meagerly stocked the grocery and general store in Mitchell was. (You would think with all the ranching in the area you could find a great steak in the cold case, but you'd be wrong.) Definitely plan to bring some provisions if you'll be in the area long. As a bonus, if you cook at the cottage, you'll get a chance to really enjoy the amenities that are provided. Mirabelle plums ripe and plentiful just outside your door, outdoor seating with a great view...I could go on. Worth noting: there is only A/C in one of the bedrooms on the main floor. But despite 90+ days we had cool nights, so opening windows was sufficient. Thanks Barbara and Aruna! We'd love to stay again!

outstanding and wonderful - or in german - ausgezeichnet!
Great rental. Loved it. We chose this rental because of the view overlooking the town, and a nice outside deck, which looks west and is great for sunsets. House is also near the John Day Fossil Beds, especially the Painted Hills, 10 mi away. The house has many nice personal touches - artwork and decorations - that make it special - plus an art studio next door. The house was very clean, almost spotless. Furnishing are nice - nothing fancy, but comfortable. Basic kitchen, laundry room, 3 small bedrooms, but beds are comfortable. There were only two of us and our dog, so we stayed in the upstairs only, as the downstairs is set up for large groups. Two upstairs bathrooms, one with a nice modern shower. No cable tv, just a dvd and tv for watching movies, which was fine by us. The house is loaded with charm. At first sight, we wondered if we made the right choice. Obviously we totally enjoyed the place. If you're looking for fancy and modern accommodations, this may not work for you. One of the highlights was meeting the manager Barbara. A wonderful woman who has put her heart and soul into this house and her other rentals. Mitchell is a small town, but locals are friendly and like to chat. Only a few restaurants and small grocery store, so renters should shop for major groceries in Prineville if staying for several days. The John Day Fossil Beds are amazing, and being close to them can't be beat. Would definitely stay again. In fact, looking forward to it!

Beautiful view, comfortable beds, nestled in one of the most beautiful parts of Oregon
We enjoyed our stay. The bathrooms were stocked with organic natural products, the kitchen had all the appliances, condiments, etc one could want, and the beds were incredibly comfortable. My kids enjoyed the box of toys and we all loved watching sunset and meteor showers from the deck. Great place to explore the John Day fossil beds and incredibly close to the Painted Hills.

Good Family Time in the Painted Hills!
My sister and I treated our parents to a Father's Day weekend in Mitchell. The Sunset Cottage was a perfect base for our Painted Hills mini vacation. Mitchell is a very small town and the cottage was easy to find. The wood stove was perfect to take the chill off during our first rainy day there. The sun came out for our second day and we thoroughly enjoyed sitting on the back deck with wine and music. We came prepared with plenty of food as we knew that grocery stores were limited in the area, however, we did make daily trips to the small store in Mitchell and appreciated the friendliness of everyone we encountered.
We would not hesitate to return to the Sunset Cottage in the future.

A great family vacation
Our Paint Hills vacation was wonderful. The area is beautiful and full of places to explore. We wish could have had more time to visit all the interesting hikes and sights. Photographs do not do the Painted Hills justice, must be seen to fully appreciate.
Our vacation rental in Mitchell was as advertised and more. The beds were very comfortable, the kitchen nicely equipped. The fresh eggs were delicious. Our family was very comfortable there. Thank you so much for the hospitality. The neighbors too, were kind and friendly to us. We highly recommend Painted Hills Vacation Rentals. We hope to stay there again.

Wonderful time
Great time, very cozy, quaint, colorful cottage. Barbara and her daughter were so responsive, even had farm fresh eggs for us in the fridge. The gardens and houses are so cute. The Painted Hills and Smith Rock are absolutely beautiful! We also drove to Cathedral Rock and did the loop. The kids loved it. The only tip would be to maybe have blackout curtains as it gets very bright (and beautiful) in the am.

Adorable Cottage, Perfect Location
If you want to visit the Painted Hills/John Day Fossil Beds, I highly recommend the Painted Hills Vacation Rentals (http://paintedhillsvacation.com/). There are 3 rentals in the quaint town of Mitchell, OR. We chose the Sunset Cottage. Upon our arrival, we were greeted by deer and turkeys in the front yard. The area is teeming with wildlife. It's clear that the owner's take great pride in these units. There were books, board games, and a DVD library. We felt right at home during our visit. Mitchell is a very small town, population 126. There is one gas station and the hours are somewhat irregular, so make sure you plan accordingly. Everyone we met was extremely friendly and helpful. It was a wonderful getaway and we can't wait to return.

A place to go back to again and again
This is a wonderful place to stay, the cottage has been recently updated and contains all the amenities you would want. There was ample room for all of us. Barbara is very friendly and helpful. We loved the area, lots of great sightseeing, wildlife, and hiking. The Painted Hills are spectacular and the scenic drives wonderful. One note, restaurants are open only on certain days. Plan ahead and bring groceries for dinners if you like to eat later than 6:00. Larger grocery stores are 45 minutes away. We will definitely be going back to see more of this lovely area and look forward to another stay at Sunset Cottage.

Excellent Place to stay and relax
Lovely cottage, recently updated with all the amenities necessary for a comfortable stay. Beds were great! The scenery around Mitchell is breathtaking and the hiking is abundant. We saw lots of wildlife and found many things to do. Restaurants in Mitchell close early so it's best to plan ahead and get groceries so you can cook your own dinners at least. There is a smoker and BBQ available along with great kitchen supplies. We will definitely be going back.
