Cottage 18 was great a little tired and in need of a refurb and a bigger bed but otherwise very good, great access. Pool and Spa facilities very good used every day. Breakfast excellent.
The room were were initially offered in the Coach House, cramped, noisy, access difficult, small bed

The location looks great and you would think the hotel is stunning inside. As the hotel has an AA sign outside you would feel that it would be a lovely hotel…
However, I would say if there were such thing as catfish hotels then this would be top.
AVOID THIS HOTEL!! Go stay at Aldwark Manor Estate instead!!!
Outside looked great but the rooms looked as though they should be in a Greene King pub.
This hotel should not be a 4 star as our room felt like we were staying in a hostel. I would of rated this 2* at most…
As we paid £188 for one night we thought it surely would have somewhat clean rooms, however our room look as if it had been used.
The toilet roll was used, we had a quarter left
The hand towel in bathroom had stains on it.
The carpet in the rooms looked awful and the furniture seemed like they were taken from a care home.
As we were so disappointed we felt the need to stay somewhere else and managed to find another hotel for a fraction of the price and stunning rooms.
I would have requested a refund for this hotel however I know how hard it is to do that and felt that they needed the money to help them redo the whole interior of their hotel.
Please if you stay here read this review and think twice if you want to stay in a nice hotel as this does not tick that box.

The location was brilliant and only £2 each to get in to York by bus
The Fat Abbot was always busy and nice food, needs a bit more choice on the menu
The spa was nice and the massages were spot on
The staff were very friendly
The room we were in, was very noisy due to it being above reception
The bed was far too small
The decor could do with a bit of a tidy up
The breakfast was always lukewarm, shame as like a cooked breakfast

Good location for park and ride into York. The reception staff were very pleasant.
This was our third stay and will be our last. Room was okay but very dated. Net curtains in room were filthy and falling apart. Breakfast was poor compared to last time. 30 minutes after breakfast started and most of the fruit juices were empty, no bacon left, 1 dried up sausage and a rubber fried egg. Breakfast staff didn’t seem to want to be there. Previous visits staff were lovely at breakfast and so much choice for food at breakfast.Very different to when this hotel won Four in a Bed which is such a shame. We only stayed for 1 night and had paid for 2.

Great spa facilities clean room nice breakfast .
Room small too hot I thought over priced personally food in pub nice but again quite expensive awful wifi had to reconnect every 10 mins ( no I don’t want to give my business email so you give me details away ) most annoying thing big car park with no cctv made me feel my vehicle was vulnerable . Could be alot better sorry .

I have stayed at this hotel a few times now and will continue to come back as its one of my favourites. Its a beautiful hotel in a lovely location away from the main hustle of the city of York but still close enough to travel too in a fairly short time. The room was spacious and clean. Fan and iron available in the wardrobe. Quality soaps and shower gel etc in the room. Staff were friendly as always. Had an evening meal in the Fat abbot and went down very well. The food there is exceptional and I can be quite fussy with what I eat. Breakfast the following morning was as good as it usually is. Cant beat a fresh cup of proper coffee in the morning with a good English breakfast with quality ingredients not skimping on catering sausages etc. Cant wait to return to this hotel in the future.

The bed was comfortable
The bathroom was poor, couldn't drain water from the bath or the sink, there was a wedding on the right I stayed which I wasn't told about, I had to carry my own luggage up 2 flights of stairs, the spa - steam room didn't work on the Sunday, on the Saturday I got kicked out wasn't told it closed at 7pm. The massage I had was awful she really hurt me and the facial brought me out in spots. Won't ever stay here again. Oh and the light in my room didn't work either

Great rooms staff and food. Breakfast superb.
Not a lot.

The Cloisters spa facilities were really nice, we enjoyed two visits there during our stay.
The adjoining Pub The Fat Abbot was a lovely location for a relaxing drink with nice outdoor seating for the lovely weather we had. The Manager and his team were all very friendly attentive & welcoming. Sunday lunch was really good and plentiful. The staff in the main hotel were all very pleasant and helpful.
Unfortunately the bed in our room was quite uncomfortable and suffered from 'roll together '. Luckily we were moved to another room as the curtain rail fell down in our original room! The second bed was more comfortable. The breakfast buffet was nice enough but lacking in variety. Overall the property is showing its age and could probably benefit from some tlc.

Fabulous. Lovely place to stay
The tv on the wall you had to sit at table to watch tv. Couldn’t watch in bed

Facilities, breakfast & friendliness
I didn't need room changing every day but would have liked milk daily.

The staff were very friendly and the pool fantastic.
Ate at the Fat Abbot and the meal was ruined because of the number of flies in the dining room. Spent the meal trying to keep the flies from landing on the food. Spent a lovely afternoon in spa but the jacuzzi was not working. The main issue that spoilt our stay was the room had very bright lamps outside directed into the room. If we opened the bathroom, again same problem huge light pollution and could not sleep. The curtains also did not keep the light out fully. Would recommend a blind behind the curtains, and recommend the lights outside be angled lower. Felt as if we were in a concentration camp - they were so bright. The light to the front door of the part we were staying in, would recommend this be changed to a sensor light - only lighting on motion - this was on all night. We had two enjoyable days in York but were absolutely shattered because of the lack of sleep. The room was very warm but we couldnt open the windows due to road and pub noise. Light still came around and through the curtains because the lighting from both sides kept us awake. had to request a fan but this couldnt be supplied until the second night.

the spa was lovely and lots of equipment in the gym
was looking a bit tried in places in the room and hotel. was very suprised there wasn't a fridge in the room. The boiler providing the hot water to the room broke and on complaining at reception we were given a refund.

the spa was great we really enjoyed it! room was massive and very comfortable
we paid for dinner bed and breakfast, but dinner was £25 to spend in the fat abbot pub next door! £25 was just enough for a starter and cheaper main so it’s not really half board

The breakfast was good, a good selection available.
Bathrooms were clean, shower was hot.
It was nice to have doors opening to outside the room, this would be better if there was some lighting along the pathway outside the building as it was pitch dark at night it would be nice if the bushes were trimmed a little to allow a bit of a view across the fields.
Breakfast room - The space to self serve was a bit limited, trying to hold a plate, take off and hold a lid to the hot breakfast items while also trying to put a food item on your plate wasn’t easy.
We had booked 3 rooms, the curtain tops were thick with dust and cobwebs in each. Similar was seen around the hotel.
Hotel decor in rooms was dated and needed repair.
Food at the restaurant was overpriced for what it was, service was poor at busy times.
Despite the restaurant being empty at 12 we were turned away because we hadn’t booked for lunch.
General signage around the hotel could be improved.

Bed was comfy, large room with a bath and very clean. Rare find but there was decaff, peppermint and chamomile tea in the room!
Lovely view from our end room as 2 windows overlooking fields. Great location.
Reception staff were lovely and helpful.
Spa was clean and plenty to do, treatment list prices were reasonable and we will return to have a treatment or 2.
Breakfast was buffet and plenty of choice.
Food in the fat abbot was tasty.
Staff seemed to forget about us in the fat Abbott, we had to ask multiple times for certain things. Menu is reduced in a Sunday but website doesn't mention this.

beautiful setting, comfortable room and excellent staff and food
not easy to find when driving! some clear directions would help
5.0
The room was comfortable and clean. All the facilities were as described and in working order. The breakfast was exceptional, best we have had in years. Lovely warm welcome from a team of young ones, very friendly. We will definitely be booking again
Just one thing to point out, the bath robe, towel and slippers are only included in the superior rooms. There is a charge. Best to take your own or be forewarned.
2.5
Room was up two flights of stairs, the second of which was narrow and particularly steep. We struggled to get a suitcase up the second flight but many older or less able people would have found it impossible. We were not asked if the location would be a problem merely that the room was up two flights of stairs.
On arriving at the room we found that the hot water was no more than a trickle from the tap and that there was a gap around the window which could not be sealed.
2.0
The spa facilities were lovely though very out of sync with the rest of the hotel. I've also never been to a spa hotel which charges you for towels.
The surroundings and outside spaces were well kept too.
The hotel and room are dated and old fashioned. On the surface the room looked clean enough but on looking closer, there were holes in the bath panel, cobwebs in the corners and at the windows and it just felt dark and unwelcoming. At breakfast there were dirty marks on the walls.
3.5
The Spa facilities were really good, the staff were helpful, one gentleman in particular that was on in the evening of our first night's stay went above and beyond to make our evening pleasurable, Couldn't have been more helpful.
We were booked in for two nights bed and breakfast. On the second morning our party were split onto two separate tables on either side of the restaurant. With just a little bit more thought we could easily have been accommodated and seated together. The bar was poorly stocked, they ran out of coke and lemonade, which are really the basics.
1.5
Breakfast great
Hotel staff all lovely
I had 2 main issues.
1) the bed was extremely uncomfortable and I had great problems trying to sleep. On my last night I did not sleep whatsoever and was just waiting for breakfast at 7am
2)The spa refused to do my booked treatment as they said I had had a body treatment the previous 2 days. They offered to do my nails instead. If I had wanted my nails done then I would have booked nails.I have stayed here numerous times in the past and always for 4 days and I book a body treatment for each day.Never during all my previous visits was I refused a body treatment .Apparently, according to the Spa lady who spoke with me, it is recommended not to have 3 body treatments in a row.She was not able to clarify who this recommendation came from. This must be some new policy the Spa have. They allowed me to book several body treatments with no problem but then changed their minds when I arrived .If this was the new policy then they should have informed me prior to my visit or at least on my first treatment day and at least then I could have gone into york for the day.Disappointed is an understatement.

Some lovely areas but also some very dated / badly designed areas. Breakfast was great and small bar near reception was lovely . Spa facilities were generally great.
. Rooms were very dated aNd disappointing, the fat Bishop pub was terrible.
Spa itself is very dated and aromatherapy room just smelt damp . We did enjoy the other steam room, sauna and salt room though.
Hot tub broke on the Saturday so we didn't get proper use of it over the course of our stay

Swimming pool and Spa and good breakfast
